Hey everyone.. Found the issue with the trimming. The left wing had a warp in it.. This was the cause of the extreme trimming and stall tendencies. I'm and idiot for not thinking about that sooner, but I've NEVER had a warped wing on an Eflite product. I'm working with HH on a solution. Thanks Will
Could you explain what a warped wing is? Where it mounts to the fuselage? The wing itself? was it twisted? I'd really like to know because I needed the exact same amount of trim, 42 clicks.
I am glad HH is working on this issue for you. Fantastic video and even showing your pilot error is awesome. We all make mistakes and manning up to them shows character. This is why I love watching your videos.
Sorry about your new plane issues. I don't ever buy a plane without watching your videos first. I appreciate your honesty and how you build things because it always seems that you come up with a better way to put things together and make it work.
Well Will at this point now we know you had a warped wing. I'm glad HH is going to take care of that for you. I know you had the surfaces centered, and 42 clicks of trim is crazy...you should never need anywhere near that much. That kind of off camber situation in the wing due to trim, and the warp...that is going to cause a weird stall characteristic. That said as we discussed, quick and deep cross control inputs at slow speed can get you into trouble with a heavier plane. I can't wait to see you fly one with the wings straight. Awesome airplane. My favorite Timber to date by a good bit. I still haven't had a chance to experiment with the tire pressure much. Looking forward to messing with that. Funny thing, I'm doing the opposite...putting the ST wheels on my SWS. Lol. Great vid brother!
Thanks Adam. Appreciate all the help you've given me on this project.. It will get sorted out and I'm really looking forward to many more flights with this ST.. Lots of content for the channel.. :-)
Hi SteffenRC, another great teaching VID Sir! I haven’t maidened my ST yet.. but this VID will REALLY help me. Several of our club members had similar wing install issues.. I’ve also learned to try to stay under 5000mAh for 6S. Handles better from what everyone says.
Thanks Rick.. I flew mine on a 3300 6s. weighed around 500g. Pretty far forward. If you friends have trimming issues, check to see if one of the wings is warped at the tip. Looking at mine with a critical eye, it appears thats the issue. Sure wish I would've caught that sooner. Have fun with yours, its a great plane...
Glad you painted those prop tips! IMHO Looks so much better that way and wished it came that way from the factory. I would think that for the landing gear bolts/nuts, just getting the threads into the nylon such that there is NO pinching of the plastic to the metal landing gear rods would be the way to go. I think putting a couple of pieces of clear/strong Gorilla tape on the mating surface of the elevator to the plastic holder should help ensure those two parts don't come apart (I'll never that it apart unless I need to repair it). As to the crash and repair, I would think Foam-Tac or E6000 would be a great way to repair this beast. I just received mine, haven't built it yet but looking forward to getting her in to the air. Thanks for your video! Sure hope HH helps you out with the wing issue and please be sure to report back what you found out. Thanks sir!
Thanks for watching.. You'll love yours.. Yes, the landing bolts and nylon lock nut don't require full tightening.. I just tighten when the bolts shows itself on the nut. I used E6000 for the repair.. My go to for this type. Thanks again for the support. - Will
Great overall review on this plane! Seems that this version is a more robust design. It’s good to hear Horizon Hobby is helping you out with the wing issue. Sorry about the crash. It happens to all of us at times, but it’s always a bummer every time . Anyway, great video!
Good video, the first I’ve watched expressing some degree of caution in buying this plane. Others have said it’s the “IPhone of RC planes”, others only have rave reviews and no negatives. I have a Super Timber sitting in a box in the garage, and will approach it with more caution because of this video. Subscription added, thanks.
Thanks Michael.. This plane is a keeper for sure, but it ain't perfect. I think I've found some issue with every plane I've owned.. This wing issue is being resolved by HH.. I'm really looking forward to the new tires and wings so I can have some fun and make more content for the channel.. You'll enjoy yours... Just don't do any tight rudder turns..😬
I ordered one and it will be here soon but I am going to fly it like it costs a million bucks. I like to maiden my planes on a calm day under as little pressure as possible. I have dirt napped so many planes and helicopters by just not taking my time to insure everything is 100% ready to fly. Don't be hesitant to land it and check everything again if you have to make big trim corrections or if you just feel something isn't right because chances are something is wrong. Some planes are almost perfect out of the box and require little to no trim and others are problematic. It is better to call it a day and discharge some lipo's than to try and fly a plane that is giving you a hard time. I wish you luck Sir.
As I mentioned this was my 2nd maiden after the first one required a mess of trim. This one was no different. It turns out the wing I had issues installing is also warped at the tip. Which explained the excessive trimming. Just noticed it today... Its a great plane and I'm sure you'll really have fun with yours. I'm waiting on some parts and mine should be ready for great flights and more videos... Thanks Will
I couldn't get my wings to latch either. I trimmed the end of the wind spar a Lil on each end, fits and latches perfectly now. Did the something to my gear and prop. Nice job fixing it.
Seems like someone said that Horizon moved the main gear forward to help prevent nose-overs. That puts the wheels further ahead of the CG which makes a plane harder to land without bouncing. I think I would let some air out of the tires. Hard tires seem to bounce worse than soft ones. I’ve never been a fan of the Timber, and I’m going to pass on this one as well. The only high-winged plane I have is the FMS Cub. I guess I’m a low-winger guy. The painted prop tips looked great.
I heard that too. I think the bouncy tires were the real issue for me. I deflated them, but I was concerned they were so low, I'd have rolling issues. I'll try those foam wheels and see what I can do. This plane checks all the boxes for me. I love my TT 1.5m, but this has a few more bells and whistles that I can appreciate.
I think you are right on track concerning the gear placement. A forward rake to the landing gear always makes it more difficult to do a "wheel landing." That is why their big FW 190 was so easy to bounce on landings. That is an accurate scale feature for the 190 - but it is an issue. Will - I have watched you fly quite a bit - and I know you are going to be doing a bunch of touch n goes with this. Good for you - go for it. I believe I have heard that pilots flying a full size plane with this type of behavior try to gain a skill set of touching down as gently as possible - then pushing forward on the stick - to try and get rid of lift - and to make it stick on the runway. Sounds good in theory anyway. Good luck with your renewed Super Duper Timber.
@@jollyroger2226 I have found that I make better wheel landings if I level off right above the runway and lift my thumb off the stick. It’s hard to know exactly when to push the stick forward, so I don’t.
@@txkflier I am glad that works for you. It is hard to get the timing right, but I think I do a similar thing when I try to ease off - and come up with slightly less up elevator at the time the wheels make contact. I don't really have much of a push forward - the way a full size pilot would be doing. But it is interesting and fun for me to try to get smooth landings with whatever type of plane I am flying. Bye the way, I have tried to make a few good 'three point' landings now and then. Most end up pretty ugly! I have a plane or two that lend themselves to three points a little better - and trying to three point on grass has been some easier than asphalt. Will - I forgot to mention before that I am sorry for the problem you had. I guess you twisted it's tail just a bit too hard. Ha.
low wings do fly better in the air. my great planes cherokee 40 flies like its on rails. but my favorite high wing is my eflite j3 cub 25 balsa plane. i wish they still made it. its a great flyer. i really like balsa planes better than foam.
I know you said the wing has a warp in it, but at 25:00 I can see the right flap is deflected above the wing surface. That asymmetric flap would definitely cause a right rolling movement.
@@CaptVII no doubt I screwed up on that rudder turn. This plane isn’t like my lighter TT 1.5 which can handle that move without issue. Now, the warped wing didn’t help. But that stall was on me.
@@SteffenRC I was referring to the abnormally large aileron trim required to fly straight. The wing may be warped, but that flap asymmetry would definitely cause a Right rolling motion. And yes, you completely caused that cross control stall and crash. 😂 Thanks for sharing, so we can all learn from it!
I had the exact same thing happen to me on the second battery. I made a few light touch and go landings then I landed and went over to pick it up and the plastic that the landing gear attaches to was seperated from the body. After further inspection, anywhere there is a part glued and there's yellow paint it is not stuck together well. The paint separated from the foam. I removed the entire piece and used epoxy to glue it back on after stripping all the yellow paint away. also 4 of the slats clips seperated when i tried to remove them so they also got epoxy. Luckily there was no damage and no foam came off during removal. This plane needs a few improvements before I could recommend it. I had 42 clicks of right aileron to trim it out and all mechanical setting were level as per the manual. The bouncing while landing problem was solved when I turned off AS3X before landing. Try it.
That is just disgusting bad quality, gluing on a painted surface. I bought the Turbo Timber and sent it straight back, out of the box a defective servo, just not acceptable. Member at my RC club lost his motor because bad motormount gluing. I have a few Eflite planes but have switched to the FMS brand, way better quality for the price.
thank you for the review. I love mine, not yet sure what I am going to do with the tires. I hate all that bounce. will let out more air then try a different tire Thanks, Mike
I just tried the Eflite SWS TT 2m wheels. Less bounce and possible to do a landing on the mains.. With the bouncy wheels, I figured out how to do a good 3 pointer and that works pretty well.
I was into 6ch helis for a few years before I gave planes a go. I made a battery mount mod on my 1st plane (Umx timber evo). I was hesitant to do the same to my 2nd plane (eflite valiant)… crashed the nose heavy valiant due to the same type of stall you encountered. Lesson learned… don’t be afraid to modify something new for better CG and landings. Heli setup and builds definitely helped me out with planes. Don’t use trim on a Heli and adjust linkages on your planes so they require the least amount of trim possible, mine seem to fly better that way but maybe it’s just the placebo effect. So Question? If you use a lot of trim on a plane are you also reducing the servo travel in that direction? Or losing some servo travel at full input? Downside to learning on helis is I just can’t seem to make myself bank and yank, I mix in a lot of rudder and counteract with opposite aileron to hold my turn. And yep that leads to that type of stall if you don’t pull out and throttle up. I reduced rudder rates to 90% to compensate for my ways. I hear this plane is very capable of aerobatics, it may be the next one for me.
Ryan, Thanks for the story about you path to RC Planes.. I've taught a fair number of pilots and find that those that come from an RC hobby, catch on pretty quick.. So, the trim on a plane should be minimal.. The control surfaces should be pretty much neutral, but sometimes the elevator may be more do to several factors. But the Ailerons should be fairly centered. If not, the plane is out of whack, (which my warped wing was a big issue). Also too much trim will reduce the throw in that direction. I have several planes that will tolerate an aggressive flat turn. This one will handle that better once I get the warped wing sorted out. But not like my lighter high wing planes.
OUCH!! I did the same think in my fms ranger a few weeks ago I was pushing it around and messing around and being stupid coming out of a loop hit the ground head-on. amazing the nothing happen to the nose at all just the wing strut broke off and couldn't find the piece that the strut clicks into the fuse to hold it in. Any suggestions on how to fix that without buying a new fuselage?? stupid things we all do.
Hey, I just so happen to have a Ranger 1220. Busted fuselage in my trashcan. I can send you those plastic parts. Shoot me an email with your address. Willsteffen@gmail.com
I ripped of my gear just like this however it was an uneventful slightly nose down landing in a soccer field... Ripped off just like this... Prop wasn't even touched... Also had a warped wing! But the few flights I had I loved it.
This is a heavy plane, recovery from a stall isn't instant like many lighter planes I've flown. I was doing a tight flat rudder turn, (left rudder and opposite ail). As it turns out there is a significant warp in the left wing, which is why the trimming was a challenge and the stall tendency.. I shouldn't have tried a tight flat turn with this plane. Its not a 1.5M Turbo Timber... Thanks for watching and commenting.
From that height there was no catching that one. Could hear the power come up but the wing didn't catch till it was too late. The only mistake was likely too much up elevator 😊
if you pause the video there was right aileron input most of the way to the ground, which actually makes it worse, as it keeps the left wing stalled. More height and airspeed was needed for a recovery at that point, and a chunk of right rudder.
I was doing a tight flat turn. Too much rudder. Counter rudder would have helped, maybe... Or, another 10'... This plane isn't like a 1.5M timber and I was tossing it around like it was. The other issue which I discovered after, is the Left wing is warped up.. Hence the massive amount of left rudder. Which also doesn't help stall characteristics.. Oh well.. She'll be up again soon enough.. Thanks for watching. Will
Nope, actually in the middle of the CG.. I misjudged the stall characteristics on a tight flat turn. This isn't a 1.5M Turbo Timber.. Also, the left wing was warped (didn't know it at the time). but thats why I had trimming issues. Also, that can introduce a stall, especially in the move I was performing..
I appreciate you being humble and your honesty. I have stalled a few planes as well and crash them. Your RUclips helps the Hobby because things do happen, and we have to analyze why. When we fly these planes, things do happen.
She probably right. Every time a plane shows up, she rolls her eyes and asked “So, where you gonna put that one?” I probably need to cull the hanger a bit. 😀
Mine has the same problem of needing a ton of left aileron trim. Looking at the the undersides of the wing from the rear, I can see that the left wing has a higher angle of attach than the right, causing the plane to want to roll to the right unless you put in a ton of very unacceptable left trim. Mine has at least a half an inch of trim. Either the wings are warped or the fuselage wing mounts were molded improperly. I am very disappointed in this expensive airplane.
Jim, I'd recommend you take some pictures and send a note to HH. They can be very helpful on resolving issues. I spend a fair amount with HH and have their Elite Membership which pays for itself very quickly. (lots of benefits). I really like this plane (NOW) after issues were resolved. Good luck....
Horizon listened to their customers complaints about nose over on the previous Timbers, hard to be mad at them for listening. They made a change in hopes of resolving it. Did that induce a bouncing issue? Whether it did or not, I don't think it is really of much consequence. The gambling man in me is betting future Timbers will have gear more similar in placement to it's predecessors. I would also not be suprised to see options for aftermarket gear with a more consevative placement. I do like those squishy tires though, sure would like to try them on a different application.
@SteffenRC too late for that, Horizon actually had them in stock so they are on order already. I think you should keep them and try them on the Ole TT 1.5. I am guessing they are beneficial but raked gear+ springy tires is just too much. Should have been one or the other.
No doubt.. I'll say the new wings make a BIG difference. The warped wing really created a stall that took a bit of time to recover. The new straight wings will recover quicker and/or just not stall.. So, all good..
My first maiden was without the slats. Actually I could tell a difference in slow flight. But today I found the issue. The left wing had a warp. Which makes sense on why it was hard to trim.
Yesterday after the crash, I was kinda bummed out about it.. Bruised Ego too.... But today, I'm totally ok with it and you are right.. Now I can fly her like I STOLe her.. (See what I did there...). Thanks buddy, appreciate the comments.. - Will
Having a lot of ailerons trim is actually just awful… It means as you well know different speeds are affected differently the plane will never fly properly. Sounds like a lemon from horizon I wonder how many others are flying with too much trim

Were you watching the same video as me? I have over 50 planes and I can't imagine any of them surviving that CRASH. Planes are not built to hit the ground, if they are they're toys for children.
Brother, I slammed a brand new e-flight P47 1.2m into an embankment before ever even lifting off the ground. The elevator just didn’t have enough throw to lift, or safe was limiting my throw. Not sure which. But it SUCKED. Repaired and it flies now, but still. Not fun.

If I didn't already have the twin timber I would probably get this one. Like you said, it checks a lot of boxes. Good build and review.
I believe its going to be a great plane once we sort out the wing warp issue...
Hello Steffen, did HH swap out the warped wing? Thank you, Anthony
Yes they did.. It really helps to be an HH Elite member.. You get outstanding customer support. (Pays for itself very quickly....)
😢tough beat, I had a similar one with my timber X but slower
What camera where you shooting with?
I'm using a GoPro 8 on a hatcam mount.
I screwed up in a few areas.. Thought it would perform like a 1.5M Turbo Timber, but the stall took a LONG time to recover.. (Too long..)😂
Did you ever check the lateral balance?..my evolution needed about an ounce and a half in the right wing tip..but that fixed my aileron trim issues.
The left wing has a significant warp in it.. Noticed it in pictures after the crash.
Its a wonderful plane. Really like it. Flies slow or fast. Easy of crazy... Travels in the truck with ease.. Whats not to like.?
There was still a good amount of height as well as power to get out of that stall. If you countered ailerons to the right it would've helped.
Surprised you didn’t buy the FMS super cub
That was a thought, but this Super Timber with the easy removable wings was too cool.. I'm working on FMS to send me a 1.7 Super Cub..😎
Hate to see that happen I know you will have it right on next remaiden I interested in this plane too😊
Yep.. Me too Frank.. But it happens. Its a great plane. I just need to get the wing sorted out.
@@SteffenRC 👍👍
Very strange crash. It looks like there was some time to recover. Good luck with it.
Will
Damn I did the same thing yesterday crashed really hard waiting on new wing and landing gear 😭
Yep.. Kinda a pain. But she's a great plane..
Do you think it may have been tail
heavy..?
I would also read take off slats
Nope, actually in the middle of the CG.. I misjudged the stall characteristics on a tight flat turn. This isn't a 1.5M Turbo Timber.. Also, the left wing was warped (didn't know it at the time). but thats why I had trimming issues. Also, that can introduce a stall, especially in the move I was performing..
Slats work fine.. Flew it with and without. The trimming was still and issue..
I appreciate you being humble and your honesty. I have stalled a few planes as well and crash them. Your RUclips helps the Hobby because things do happen, and we have to analyze why. When we fly these planes, things do happen.
My wife thinks I have too many airplanes. She wants me to fly more risky manoeuvres like your doing. Lol
Hey I got a super timber and I did the same damn thing broke the same way
Horizon listened to their customers complaints about nose over on the previous Timbers, hard to be mad at them for listening.
Thanks Chris. We chatted about this last week.. If the foam tires I'm going to try work out, you might have a chance you test these out..😎
@SteffenRC too late for that, Horizon actually had them in stock so they are on order already. I think you should keep them and try them on the Ole TT 1.5. I am guessing they are beneficial but raked gear+ springy tires is just too much. Should have been one or the other.
Did same thing to my gear and prop as well. Mis text on the last comment. Lol
It’s a hand full, I feel for you, fly high & stay away from the trees.
No doubt.. I'll say the new wings make a BIG difference. The warped wing really created a stall that took a bit of time to recover. The new straight wings will recover quicker and/or just not stall.. So, all good..
Don’t use the 5000 battery. It makes the plane really heavy and tip over.
I only fly 6s 4000, flys great.
The gap between the left slat and the left wing is not the same as the gap between the right slat and the right wing. This why you have to over trim
I had the same issue without slats too...
Pump is a pile of do do. Use Dubrow light 4.5 or 5 inches.
Its a bit tricky, but I got mine sorted out. I actually used the Eflite SWS TT tires for a while, then went back to the balloons..😂
If you don’t air up your tires as hard it won’t bounce as much.
Probably gonna try that option too.. Don't want them too low as to bottom out though.. I'm sure there is a sweet spot... Thanks
@@SteffenRC yep my pa-18 super cub has the same tires and when you find that sweet spot landings became buttered. 👍👍👍🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Throw those slats away. Can't really feel a difference and they could be your trim issue
My first maiden was without the slats. Actually I could tell a difference in slow flight. But today I found the issue. The left wing had a warp. Which makes sense on why it was hard to trim.
I stay with my Omp bighorn
I've heard thats a great plane.. Its on the list.. (the list is too long.....)
Maybe slats is problem
Turns out the wing was warped.. Like an idiot I didn't think of that.. I've never had an Eflite plane with a warp in it.. Ugggggg
To bad you crashed it but now you don't have to baby it at least :)
Yep. I heard of others with trimming issues on this plane. Horizon took care of me, so I can't complain too much.. Fun plane now.....
You need a new camera. Really bad focus.
Keith, I film at 4K and post at 1080p. You might want to check that you are viewing at High Resolution since out of the 19k views and countless comments, nobody has said anything about the poor video quality.
I do not like those wheels. I hate those squishy wheels they’re gonna pop.
when the tire becomes OUT OF ROUND you have TOO much air....silly
I agree. But that what you get when you have VERY thin inflatable wheels/innertubes... I don't inflate mine very much..
Yup that was a stupid move
You got that right.. Hard lesson to learn....
HH makes junk. when will they ever learn that the gear assembly they use just never cuts it. they need to look at all the rest out there.
I don't think I share your opinion of HH.. I've had many, many products from them that have been outstanding. Some not as great, but nothing I'd consider junk.. But, I get it.. My Chevy buddies say my F150 is junk.. ( I disagree...).😎
Not fun.
Yep.. kinda a bummer when that stuff happens...
