O. M. G. I will *never* not be utterly astonished at the power of music. It is amazing how, in just a few notes, a song can instantly transport you back to a specific place and time. I have not heard this song in many, many years but within the first 3 seconds I literally had a flash of my 19-year-old self dancing to this song in one of my old favorite nightclubs.
You need to hear the long, acapella version of this. It was on the movie "Belly", starring DMX. By the way, the lady singing is Caron Wheeler. Also try Soul II Soul's "Keep on Movin" and "Jazzy's Groove".

One of the biggest hits of 89 and led right into the 90’s. This came out right when New Jack Swing took over all of R&B and it wasn’t even Teddy Riley this time. The remixes were even hotter. This song and the album just stayed in heavy rotation. Easily one of the best of that era.
Soul II Soul was a British r&b group that came on the scene in 1988. This single was released in 1989. This group like many others back then made a mark in history. The foundation is so strong that even generations over 30 years later can feel the rhythm. This song is fire even today!

It's the original album version that really launched this as a single. The original is part acapella with a smooth beat, that transitions into the next song, Jazzie's Groove. The lead singer on this track is Caron Wheeler, as many have pointed out. By far my favorite track of hers is I Adore U ( The Flow Jazzy Remix), from the soundtrack to Mo Money. Her other big hit with this group is Keep on Movin. It's the club mix that really does it for me. The Teddy Riley remix is a very close second. It was such a great time to be alive in that era; I dearly miss it!
What you might miss out in terms of their instant popularity is the breath of fresh air that they represented in the music industry. The musical landscape in the US consisted of materialistic acts who sometimes couldn't sing. There were some copy cats out there too. They also didn't have real instruments or musicianship to them. So here comes this entourage, with a visionary that has a look, a brand and a production values along with a sound that is thoroughly and unapologetically African, yet laid back while using real musicians, composition and arrangements that were new to the ears of the general public in popular music. They also straddled different genres of music with their sound. You'll find R&B, Jazz, House elements sprinkled with classical European music. Their tracks felt tight and loose at the same time. Once you listen to them closely, you should see it too. Caron Wheeler's smokey voice was the cherry on top that set them apart from everyone else.
As a watcher... you can tell when a reaction is Heartfelt and Genuine. I really appreciate your reactions... the way you react, enjoy the music translates in a major way. ❤
