- A newly released video sheds new light on the moments leading up to Richard Russell crashing a plane. The footage shows him going through security wearing a T-shirt that says "the sky's no limit." He then boards an empty 70-seater plane and took off. Russell flew the plane around Seattle for an hour while National Guard fighter jets were scrambled in fear. The 2018 incident ended when Russell crashed the plane onto a remote island, killing himself.
He seemed so nonchalant about the whole ordeal, almost like he was at peace and just wanted to go out in style.

Bittersweet really. I don’t know how to really think of it either. I pray God forgives him for taking his own life but a part of me feels happy for him that he went out the way he wanted… I don’t know, such a strange story and guy. I bet he was someone you would have a beer with.

He still deserves full credit for being the only person, who on their first flight without any experience before, chose a large passenger plane, did a looping in it, which is a feat the most experienced pilot wouldn't dare to do, didn't loose control over it and perfectly hit the spot where he wanted to crash.

He certainly practiced at home on a flight simulator. But it's still extremely impressive
You should watch the documentary. He did much more than just a smooth take off. Pushed the limits on that plane. He told atc he was going to do a circle flip....and he did it. Now that's impressive!

As a pilot, he spoke more than anyone else in the entire aviation industry. Ground handlers have it rough, pilots have bad days, flight attendants work when feeling sick but no one can say a damn thing.

For a man who hasn’t flown a plane in his whole life, he was really good at flying the plane in the beginning. He did big upside down loops in the air with the plane. Had he stayed calm and been sane, he would have been better than a stunt show pilot.

As a Ramp Supervisor for an airline with a private pilot license & over 400hrs of flight time I have to say the most impressive thing about this whole situation was how he was able to unhook the towbar which usually takes 2 people on each side of the nose landing gear to detach the towbar in sync and he did it with the breaks released on the aircraft and jumped back in. Idk what he would’ve done had the towbar not detached 😭😭😭
He would be alive because this probably would have led him down a path to mandatory therapy and proper meds to treat his depression.

First offender... Non-violent offense with no damages or injuries and no passenger. Honestly they would make him do 3 months of a 2 year sentence out on good behavior and he'd be on a very long probation mandatory therapy checkins. Not a big deal at all. A really good attorney might have even gotten him less time than that but he would be with a PD from the sound of his situation. He is an illustration of how we collectively turn a blind eye to people like him and fully expect them to check out just not in such a glorious fashion. We expect white males like him to OD quietly at home on fentanyl.

The dude really needed a friend that cared for him and a freaking hug. When they reach the point of wanting to die, these people just need positive reinforcement and they need to feel loved. A broken guy can be put together again with the right people. So if you have someone that no longer wants to live, be there for them, talk with them, show them love, and be persistent.

Even with these things, some people will be depressed. Even without, some people will be happy. I wish he received help but he didn't - or it didn't work for him.

His contract ended resulting in us having to move across country He took a much lower paying job with a company (coincidentally, building aircrafts) he's been wanting to work for for years. Before the move we lived in a luxury apartment with all the amenities close to everything in our city. Now we live in a double wide that needs lots of work because buying was cheaper than renting (we prefer to rent, less responsibility. Im aware that you throw away money renting, but we didnt care) I was really upset when we moved. It's not the life I have been accustomed to for the past 7 years. I really had to dig deep and realize so many ppl would be grateful for the things I have now and if I let it get to me, I was going to continue to be miserable. I didn't want that because we can die any day without notice. Moral of the story, I went from having tons of money to throw away, to living from paycheck to paycheck and I can still live happily as long as I humble myself and allow it to happen ❤

What's crazy is when I was younger and way more depressed I really thought about doing something just like this. I had enough flight experience and access to aircraft as an aircraft detailer to do it too.
I never did it because I told myself I'd eventually meet someone who'd make it all worth it.
I have, and I've also come close to losing them.
I hope everyone finds someone who loves them enough to help.

I have been there and seeing a phycologist for face to face treatment saved my life.
So a lot of things people don’t know, I used to work a Horizon air as an aircraft mechanic and I know the guy who last spoke to Richard right before he did this. First Richard was always asking certain mechanics how to turn on the aircraft not knowing his intentions (start the engines, take off, gear up, etc) most guys just thought he was some airplane nerd or something. Second, aircraft 449QX was brand new and had literally just gotten some issues fixed that day so we were kind mad he didn’t take one of the older Q400s that were getting close to retirement and always breaking down lol

he seemed like one of those people who used humor to hide pain. Let it be known, just because some people can crack jokes , it dosen't mean they dont need love or attention.

You could never tell how broken a person is. You could never that a person is just okay but in fact his lifting the whole world on his shoulder, getting heavier each day, making him get more closer to the ground, and just suddenly snaps and had to let go of it. RIP man.

I just wish I could have hugged him, I've been here before, sometimes I'm still there. His heart was so heavy with the woes of life. I will not praise or glorify his actions they were unsafe and selfish. This is a tragedy, there is no triumph. The only thing to take from this is rhat at least he is out of pain. But I wish right before he stole that plane I would teleport from the future and just hug him right before, I wouldn't stop but I'd hug him and tell him that no matter how broken he felt, my huge and the love of his love ones will work hard to hold him together. This boys death and his misery broke my heart. I wish he was alive to eat the fish juicy peaches of summer, or breathe in the brisk air the oceans coast, or to simply feel the sun radiate his skin till it glowed. I never forget this man, I cry everytime I see his vids, read his story or see his pictures, he just looked like a soul that you'd be Instantly in live with. Rest in peace my richard russel. I love you
As someone who's been battling an inner demon for the past 2 years myself, I empathized with this man. May he rest in peace and I hope his family has healed or is healing.

This is really sad. He was clearly hurting and wanted to end his life, but he didn’t want to hurt anyone else. I wish he had someone to talk to, maybe a friend could have done him good. Seemed like a kind man, RIP.
Rest easy brother, Hope you found some solace before you left us.

RIP Sky King. I was just watching a documentary on him yesterday. I’ve always thought about him occasionally since this happened. I’m just sad he’s dead. Dude seemed like such a chill guy, make everyone laugh, but had his own internal issues.

I’m glad he didn’t do this with anyone on the plane putting anyone at risk, considering it was pretty risky flying the way he did. He didn’t even sound like a bad person. One can only fight to be strong everyday with mental illness but it eventually gets exhausting.
