Luther sang this song as tribute to Dionne Warwick because she first sang it in the 60's. Luther covered the song and made it his own. Many people don't realize A House Is Not A Home by Luther is a cover song.
@@hallbrawlerspodcast5091 nit sure about that or not, do know Luther has said she was his inspiration which made him want to be a singer, and she has said they spoke everyday (including her talking about recently on JHud show)
Dione Warwick is the original diva. She mentored that whole generation of soul singers. Luther was one of the few (the only one I ever saw) whose singing could bring a tear to her eyes.
A House is Not a Home was originally done by Dionne Warwick (the lady you saw in the video) back in the 60's. Luther cover a few songs from other artists. He did it so well, that people forget about the original versions.
Actually, Luther started out as background singer for many groups & solo artists, including David Bowie. He then joined the group's Chic and Change. Patti Labelle was the one who encouraged him to go out on his own and start a solo career. Luther started Patti Labelle's fan club when he was a young boy. He adored her!
Luther grew up a big fan of singer Dionne Warwick ( pronounced DEE - YAWN). She sang that song first, years ago. And it was a hit Luther, in turn, recorded the version here, back in the early 80s. And it took, was one of his early hits So, on this awards show, he was paying tribute to her. BTW, they did a duet, recorded a few years ago entitled "How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye. ". Check it out
Yes, indeed, Luther and Dionne Warwick are both great artists. His arrangement of this wonderful song is a classic. It shows his versatility and tremendous technique as an artist.
Finally you did a reaction to this beautiful song. Although Dionne first sang & recorded it over 50+ years ago, after Luther sang it She said she could never sing it again.
I saw Luther rehearsing at the NAACP Awards one year. His eyes were closed and the only people in the theater were the workers and the media. Everybody (especially the women,) stopped what they were doing. This man's voice was perfect. When he finished and opened his eyes, he was actually embarrassed. Everybody there was clapping. I am a 100% straight man but I had chills listening to Luther.
If God gave me a singing voice this is the voice I would want. Luther mesmerized the ladies without trying. Ashley your reaction looks like you are in love lol. Five hearts ❤❤❤❤❤
I was 14 yrs old when this NCAA Image Award performance took place and when I say I watched his performance in complete silence and was hypnotized by the pure artistry and control he has with his instrument blew my young aspiring male vocalist mind.
First, I want to say I love your reactions. Keep up the wonderful work and thanks. Mr. Luther Vandross is one of the Greatest of All Time. His music could take you through every emotion possible. His song, Dance With My Father, just shreds me. Always a favorite but ever since my father's passing it is even more special, and it is Mr. Vandross who made it so. You should listen to it and Stop to Love. Would love to see you react to some Marvin Gaye, Jeffery Osborne, George Benson and Gregory Abbot.
I'll always have a place for "Dance With My Father" on my playlist. Luther Vandross can take a great song like "Dance With My Father" and make it miraculous.
Luther performed this for a lifetime achievement presentation for Ms. Dionne Warwick, who was one of Luther's biggest vocal influences along with the likes of Aretha Franklin and Patti Labelle. Respect and RIP to the Ronzoni.
The tribute was to Dionne Warwick who was the original recording artist to the song which she recorded in the 1960s. By the way she is also Whitney Houston's cousin.
For years before his death Luther said he'd wanted to do an entire album of Burt Bacharach/Hal David songs. Sadly, we never got to hear that album. But this beautiful rendition of the Dionne Warwick original is a small taste of what could have been. Before he died Luther did record four songs by Bacharach/David: "Anyone Who Had A Heart (also originally sung by Dionne), "What The World Needs Now", and "Your Secret Love". RIP to the greatest male singer of his generation, Luther Vandross.
Actually Luther was famously asked if he wanted to do an album of Bacharach David songs. No Luther stated he wanted to do an album covering Dionne Warwick. He also said their duet was his favorite...duet he ever did.
Everything that Luther songs automatically goes on the playlist! Mr. Luther Vandross: this brother could sing about anything and make it a masterpiece and a hit record! One of the greatest singers and voices of all-time! Luther was a backup singer for Ms Warwick and someone else but Ms. Warwick told Luther it is time for you to go out and conquer the world with your great voice!
I straight up got the chills seeing this performance. The range and the different textures his voice showcased is just amazing! This is my favorite version of the song.
Dionne Warwick had originally recorded A House Is Not A Home and was an inspiration to Luther in starting his career. He had hoped to sing the song one day and to meet his inspiration, Dionne Warwick! He got the blessing of meeting his idol and became fast and dedicated friends with her! And this was the live dedication to his friend and inspiration. Luther's talent and amazing vocals are truly missed!
Dionne Warwick recorded this song in the 60’s. It was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. He and Dionne are very good friends. He’s like a lil brother to her and Patti LaBelle.
Some of these songs have quite a backstory behind them far beyond what a limited RUclips video can convey. This was the LIVE version of the already classic album version at that point in time. And the album version was a REMAKE or COVER of the original version by Dionne Warwick back in the 60s if I'm not mistaken at the height of her career back then.
Hal Davis and Burt Bacharach wrote many songs most of them sung by Dionne Warwick in the 60's. Luther grew up listening to those songs. When he started singer as a solo artis. He covered all love of this teams' songs and made them his own. Dionne is also Whitney Houston's first cousin.
Luther started out as a background singer for Dionne Warick. She saw early on the gift he had but knew if she kept him in the background she would hold him back. So, she made the difficult decision of firing him and told him that later on he would understand. That's why they kept showing her face. That was like watching one of your kids walking across the college stage of life graduating with full honors. That' why she was crying.
MY GIRL..🎉🌹🙏🏿🌹🙏🏿🌹🙏🏿🌹🙏🏿🌹🙏🏿🌹🙏🏿🌹 THAT WAS A MASTER PIECE 🎉DAY DEAR...😮..MISS WARWICK.WAS CLASSIC.😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢LIKE THE SONG ...IN BETWEEN THE HEART ACHE 🌹🙏🏿 SOME JAZZ ALSO LOVE..WE HAVE TO SET UP OUR OWN LIBRARY OF MUSIC ..SEED BANKS 🎉 THE BUILDING OF A SOVEREIGN INDEPENDENT SPACE... 🧡🔥🔥 I'm looking at Dionne here and all I see is Whitney! She's always looked more like her cuz than her mom, to me. Luther covered her song and definitely made this his one, as always, his own. RIP Luther and Whitney. Tfs!
Dionne Warwick was the first one to perform this song, there’s been a lot of other artists that cover this song, but nobody does it like “ Luther “ 🩵🩵🩵
I have fond memories of the times that I was fortunate enough to see Luther live. He wasn't a dancer, but he always put on a great show. I remember watching this performance on TV. Luther and Dionne had a bit of a falling out. I don't remember the reason, and it didn't last long. This performance was the beginning of them burying the hatchet and rebuilding their friendship.
My wife and I have been married for almost 38yrs. Our love affair began on April 19th, 1984, when I sang a Luther Vandross song, to her. (If Only For One Night)😃😍😜
Still one of the greatest live performances ever televised. Luther always loved Dionne and he took one of her original songs to another level with his recording of it. What a tribute to both of them.
Here's a little background about Luther and Dionne Warwick in case you didn't know. Luther sang as a back up singer for her. She paid attention to his talents and fired him from back up and told him to go shine as a solo artist. He did and the rest is history!! Love your reactions you are so funny especially during the D'angelo reaction!!🤣😂🤣😂
Remember, that was her song originally and he also did a duet with her. How many times must I say goodbye check that one out. She was one of his idols.
The best voice of the 80’s on the news they said he could open the telephone book and he could sing the names and make it sound good 😅 in the 80’s every album hit number 1 in jet magazine !
Such a gorgeous voice. He had diabetes and had been heavier. He lost weight when he got the diagnosis but struggled with it and died of complications of it.
Luther sang this song to Dionne Warwick because she wrote this song and I think sang it too, but Luther OWN this song when he sang it. After that Ms. Warwick said that is Luther Song Now.
Say Luther is concert. I remember the workers saying it was hot in the venue because Luther didn’t like air conditioning. I understand why. He didn’t want anything to hinder those notes. Luther was a perfectionist and his flawless voice definitely shows that.RIP Luther. I’d like to think he and people like Whitney Marvin Aretha Minnie and others are in heaven’s choir. 😢❤️🕊️🕊️🕊️🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
GREAT REACTION !! I love this channel. May I SUGGEST... One of the 70's greatest crooners of all time. Lionel Richie when he was front man for THE COMMODORES #1 JUST TO BE CLOSE TO YOU #2 SWEET LOVE #3 THIS IS YOUR LIFE All 3 P.D.C. I was born in the early 60's so I know that every Funk Band and R and B. Had to have that one front man that could take a slow jam to that level. EVEN PARLIAMENT !!! People overlooked my friend GLENN GOINS as a crooner may he rest in peace.
The fly auntie is Dionne Warwick who originally sang the song. You should react to LOTS of Dionne Warwick songs. Try "Walk on By" by Isaac Hayes/I Cant Sleep at Night by Ghostface Killa.
Amazing performance. I saw him doing this at Motown's salute to Apollo, it was great, but I think this performance was a bit better. My only complaints about Luther was how early we lost him and how so many people since hearing him think they can over sing and do runs a whole song and still sound good. What he was doing was a gift.
One of the best vocalist of all time. There will never be another Luther. #LutherVandross
Only dude that sounded similar to Luther was jahiem imo.
Luther sang this song as tribute to Dionne Warwick because she first sang it in the 60's. Luther covered the song and made it his own. Many people don't realize A House Is Not A Home by Luther is a cover song.
And Luther loved Dionne, she was his favorite singer and said his inspiration. He covered other songs of hers and duet together too.
Original by writer Burt Bacharach and Dusty Springfield. Luther's version is the be all, end all though.
I didn't know that
They also had a little beef going before this
@@hallbrawlerspodcast5091 nit sure about that or not, do know Luther has said she was his inspiration which made him want to be a singer, and she has said they spoke everyday (including her talking about recently on JHud show)
That man sounded better live than recorded.
Dionne is looking at Luther like, "I should have sang it like that!"
They'll never be another singer like Luther Vandross. Was just on another level.
Dione Warwick is the original diva. She mentored that whole generation of soul singers. Luther was one of the few (the only one I ever saw) whose singing could bring a tear to her eyes.
Luther's runs were immaculate
Literally the best live solo performance I have ever seen. The ability to use his voice as a true instrument was incredible.
One of the greatest vocal performances ever!! RIP Luther!
Your smile watching this is like those in the audience. That is what Luther does with his exceptional talent.
A House is Not a Home was originally done by Dionne Warwick (the lady you saw in the video) back in the 60's. Luther cover a few songs from other artists. He did it so well, that people forget about the original versions.
One and only Luther
She introduced Luther Vandross to us and this was her song.

Luther’s voice is effortless. Soothing.
Luther always did a fire cover song on every album. We always looked forward to it.
OMG!!!! I cried! Did anybody else just cry! Like, I been listening to Luther all these years! But THAT was something S P E C I A L !!!!!!

Luther was always there for me when my heart was broken. And this continue to this day. The man is magic.

They were great friends
The smile on Janet Jacckson's face, when they put the camera on her, says it all!
This maybe the greatest male vocal performance-LIVE. Ever!!!!
I agree, I don't know one better. Maybe something from Whitney

Our love affair began on April 19th, 1984, when I sang a Luther Vandross song, to her. (If Only For One Night)😃😍😜
He sung it to her, because she originally sung it back in the 60s. It was her song first.🥰
Dionne sang the ORIGINAL and it was a hit in the late 60s or early 70s written by Burt Bacharach (Say a Little Prayer for You etc...).
Hal David wrote the lyrics and Burt Bacharach composed the music.
Still one of the greatest live performances ever televised. Luther always loved Dionne and he took one of her original songs to another level with his recording of it. What a tribute to both of them.
Hands down one of the greatest live performances ever done, those vocals and those runs were straight crazy, can't nobody do that but Luther.
Shows how GREAT this ICON was, when you have a smile from the hole video, from start to finish!!!!! 😭😭😭 LOL!!!!
Luther was in top form where he did this tribute song!
Luther and Sade are the 2 most untouchable vocalists.
Dionne Warwick recorded A house is not a home when I was a kid and Luther re-recorded it and made it better ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I miss this legend so much. best male singer of all time. I went to hid concert in the Bay Area in the late eighties. Rest In Peace king Luther...

I thought that was Roberta Flack who lovingly fired him so he could go and sing solo? 🤔
Dionne Warwick Recorded it originally. That's why Luther sung it for her

This song was and still is an ode to the sisters from the brothers from the beginning to the end ❤
Such a gorgeous voice. He had diabetes and had been heavier. He lost weight when he got the diagnosis but struggled with it and died of complications of it.
"CHILLS"
Luther sang this song to Dionne Warwick because she wrote this song and I think sang it too, but Luther OWN this song when he sang it. After that Ms. Warwick said that is Luther Song Now.
Dionne actually didn’t write this song. It was a collaboration by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Dionne, I believe, was the first to record it.
another great reaction
Luther…that man. Today autotune, grinding, twerking etc. this was live, no autotune. A true musical talent of rare supply. God bless you Luther.
Dionne was his favorite singer
Listen to Luther, he can teach you what soul is. We miss you
Luther♥️🌹🌇
Luther broke it all the way down, that's some long loving making session, love song right there ya!
Pronounced (DEE-ahn).....This song was originally a hit with Dionne in '64, then fan and later friend Luther made it a hit again in '81...
