Luther just ate this song ALIVE. He knew he was gonna wreck shop as soon as he stepped to the mic. If butter was a voice it'd be Luther's voice. Also notice the lack of gimmicks. No backup singers or dancers or band. Just him, the mic, and the curtains. That's hard to do but he does it with such confidence. AMAZING.
He was the most gifted singer to ever grace my ears. I saw him in live in Germany in the early 90's a d saw an incredible show. I love you Luther and may God Bless your beautiful soul!
Remember the late, great Michael Jackson doing a performance on stage while SITTING in a chair? Luther's performance here reminds me of this. They were both so far advanced in what they do, they were actually having fun with their heaven-sent gifts. 🎁.
Background to this performance: Dionne was a very good friend and mentor to Luther. Luther and Dionne had a big falling out and Luther found himself without his best friend. This was a tribute to Dionne and he chose this song because he love hearing Dionne singing. He was apologizing to Dionne with this song. They mended their relationship that night.
This puts this song in an interesting light...as without Warwick's friendship....it left a void, much like going into an empty house...and the part of his performance where he says, "I'm sorry" he very well may have said that to his friend on a sneak tip.
That is beautiful. He sang it from his and we all felt it. I sent it to my husband and I pray he feels it. Lyrics in songs has a meaning every time. RIP Luther
At 73 years old, I only was interested in Luther and Dionne's talents and choice of songs. I will tell you one thing, if Luther sang this love song focusing on mending a relationship with Dionne Warwick, if they had both were separately married...this would seal the deal of their divorces, that's for sure! I'm going to have to dig deeper on Google. his voice was phenomenal no one can compete with this! R I P Luther!
No auto tune needed here, he had perfect pitch and could pick notes out of his head. He sang that song thousands of times so the things that Iook improvised were weII pIanned out ahead of time - he just made it Iook easiIy played. His diction and use of resonance in his head and teeth were exacting. Luther's abiIity to control the air fIow and deliver sound through his entire vocal range was his Iifetime achievement, a man Iike no other singer. He had a velvet tonal quality that made him unique and ability to express himself through audience eye contact in an assertive sexy manner made women swoon and men jeaIous.
I saw an interview with him years ago on Arsenio Hall's show, and he made a comment I've never forgotten. He said that singers could do all the melismas and vocal runs in the world, that's fun acrobatics, but to him the most important thing of all is always the tone. Controlling clear, pure tone. And man, he had it. ❤ My favorite male R&B singer, always and forever.
Dionne Warwick released this song in 1964 and Luther Vandross covered it in 1981. He was a huge fan of Dionne's growing up (as was I) and they became friends. The song was written by Hall David and Burt Bacharach, as was many songs released by Dionne Warwick from 1961 to 1972.
Velvet is the perfect word. He mastered everything. He knew when to pull back, when to push, when to go soft, when to play. Greatest singer our generation will ever see.
Yes indeed! I saw Anita Baker in concert at the Fox in Saint Louis. It was mind-blowing! She sounded like the recordings. My wife and I were in awe!!!!
your smile, head bobbing and all is exactly how I feel when I hear him. listen to the group Change which was the first group I remember him singing with and the record on the album called Searching, . the first time I ever heard that supreme voice. i have been turned out ever since ✌🏾✌🏾✌🏾
Having had the privilege of seeing him perform this live, at Madison Square Garden, in 1987, means so much to me. I was only 15, but the memory of it all.....wow.
Valarie another compassionate Luther song I listened to recently during the xmas Holidays was a song titled "With A Christmas Heart" It will make you cry. It really gives depth to what xmas should be like. Please listen to it... Bernard
You wanna talk talent? You wanna talk grace? You wanna talk Icon? Luther was all of it, and then some. I know its a platitude but they don’t make music like this anymore. We can count our blessings that Luther lived in a time where recordings are possible, because his art will be shared forever
I love Luther! His voice was perfection to me. This is my favorite live performance of Luther's rendition of A House is Not a Home. Dionne Warwick was being honored at the NAACP Image Awards that year and this was Luther's tribute to her.
Luther covered so many songs, but he definitely made them his own, not everyone can do that. Luther has a very special place in my heart. My dad (RIP) sang his music all the time. So much that I often hear my dad's voice along with his.
I have and always will love Luther Vandross. A gift from God. There will never be another. From a day when music was poetry and talent. It's sad that music today has turned into a few second of skipped segments of streamed garbage.
I absolutely agree - Luther’s voice and innate talent were gifts from God - and well as gifts to us. Thank You, God, and thank you, Luther, for giving us so many beautiful love songs. 🙏
Luther Vandross was like a Genie 🧞♂️👳♂️who takes you on his magic carpet for a ride within a story. He creates a delicious moment wether happy or sad you are so gad you participated. Very smooth and mellow in this one, he also has some upbeat songs 🎵 but he still brings you along for the moment. Take care and be well.
A house is not a home Lyrics by Hal David and composer was Bury Bacharach written for Dionne Warrwick who sung it first, I believe. Dionne was one of Luther's favorite singers, and he sung it to her that night.
My best friend worked on his management team and I was fortunate to be backstage for many Luther shows. He was a very sweet man. He was also one of the great artists of all time and it kills me that he has been lost in history (to a certain extent) to the pile of crap that make up the contemporary artists of today. Kanye couldn't carry his Evian bottle !!!!
I so agree. The use of autotune and lip-syncing dancers is too common. So many great singers have been seemingly forgotten. That's why it's so important for the young people to understand what great song writing and singing is really about.
@@VocalSplendorStudios I was fortunate enough to see him in concert twice. The last time was his last performance at what was then called The Universal Amphitheater. I took my then girlfriend, a friend, and my youngest daughter. As usual, he was amazing. As an extra added bonus, Gregory Hines was in the audience and sang There's Nothing Better Than Love with him. It's a beautiful duet that you can find on RUclips. It was incredible. Being older, I have had the pleasure of seeing many of the greats, past and present. Luther was/is one of my favorites. If you get a chance, look Jackie Wilson singing Danny Boy. His voice and range was so amazing. I saw him in concert in my teens headlining a show that had many great artists on the bill. Second billed was Aretha Franklin. As a young musician, I was thrilled to get to meet them both after the show.
I started feeling teary before he even uttered a word....that's how powerful his presence was, never mind his singing. Just like the great Alexander O'Neal, Luther has a natural talent for soothing the soul. I miss his music 😅
By the time Luther gave this performance, we had ALL listened to A House is Not a Home on repeat and knew every rif and ad lib (compared to Dionne's version). Then the majority of us had seen him live with new rifs and ad libs. With this NAACP Image Awards performance, he left us with a bit of all those version PLUS some more. For posterity. RIP Mr. Vandross.
Now this is a man who has totally mastered his craft to the point he's having fun with it. Unreal. I would love for you to analyze Peabo Bryson's, 'Can you stop the rain?' Thanks.

The Great Luther Vandross, could sing anything! So many great hits he made. I remember hearing and seeing on Episode on Sesame Street back in the day. I also heard his voice commercial jingles. He was in very demand as background singer. As I got older, I heard him with this group called, Change. If you listen to two songs titled Searching and The Glow of Love. Bar none, The Best Ever!
Totally agree with you. He is Focused and telling the story and one can feel it right away. Apart from that, of course his technique was amazing and his voice was a bless
One of the few one-name singers you only had to hear first notes and then . . .Luther!!!! Also he changed that arrangement up so you knew he was singing live.
Valarie great program. Yes I also agree about the voice of this man Luther Vandross. We really lost a great one. I had a friend who played drums for Luther many years ago and he said Luther was a perfectionist. He drill the band and background singers over and over. And Luther stood out from the pack of other great male singers, because his breath control techniques were so uniquely pleasant and rather odd.
