I have the same number 1 and 2. I was born in 1971 and liked mccartney before i really knew of the beatles. I remember liking the song pipes of peace. I bought no more lonely nights. his first album i owned was press to play. I then discovered the beatles through borrowing cassettes from the library.
Grand Funk's red album was so innovating at the time it came out in 1969,the driving fuzzed out bass lines that jumped out in your face was just awesome especially to a learning bass player that I was at the time, that's why this album of theirs stands out the most to me, and of course Mel is one of my altime favorite bassist who is very much underrated. 😎👍
Nice list Larry. I am fan enough of yours to seen quite a few coming and it's good of you to put some extra time/effort to those bands/artists which people might not know much about. Here is my Top 25. I think I originally got down 96 different choices to 25. As you say.. It's not easy when you love bands and artists for different reasons and in different ways. Some are very nostalgic. Some I listen to much right now. Some might have a huge catalog others a small strong catalog. Some a great songwriters others are simply excellent musicians. How do you compare Frank Zappa to AC/DC? Neil Young to Grand Funk Railroad? The Beach Boys to Jimi Hendrix Experience? You just have to go with your heart! My Top 25: 25. Uriah Heep 24. Curtis Mayfield 23. The Dixie Dregs 22. The Band 21. Genesis 20. Black Sabbath 19. Steely Dan 18. Simon & Garfunkel 17. Led Zeppelin 16. Diana Ross 15. The Doors 14. Mike Oldfield 13. The Temptations 12. Thin Lizzy 11. Kansas 10. Wishbone Ash 9. The Rolling Stones 8. Michael Jackson 7. Judas Priest 6. Jethro Tull 5. Van Halen 4. Aerosmith 3. Blue Öyster Cult 2. Queen 1. Deep Purple
Notes to my list for each choice: 25. Uriah Heep A big and uneven catalog. Great and good stuff all over but just too uneven in quality from the start to really reach the top for me. 24. Curtis Mayfield Soul man who started great with The Impressions and made a successful transfer as a soloartist. Very easily enjoyable tunes that could be just that or have deeper meanings to them. A very original voice. When listening to soul/rn'b I find many sort of sound similar. Curtis stands out. 23. The Dixie Dregs Short and sweet catalog. The name sounds like they could be similar to Lyrnyrd Skynyrd or The Allman Brothers but is something different. I love how complex and serious the playing is while so fun and often fast. Can be beautiful at times too. 22. The Band I searched for Bob Dylan and found The Band. His backing band quite early on that made a name for themselves. Just so different compared to anything of the time and still are. 21. Genesis Peter Gabriel or Phil Collins? I say both. I think most there records contain some really good songs! 20. Black Sabbath I like most their albums regardless of singer or line-up. Some a great and others good. 19. Steely Dan Just such a perfect catalog. I am not a huge jazz-guy but can appreciate aspects of it. Steely Dan brings it in a great package. 18. Simon & Garfunkel Could almost gone with just Paul Simon and that was a hard part about making the list. To stay to with something specific.. Not bring in all different side projects. I would have loved many more albums from these two but I am happy with what we got. 17. Led Zeppelin A band I used to rank higher. Love them but should I rank something I don't really listen to very much before others I listen to all of the time? 16. Diana Ross The only female singer on my list and my favorite. I think her voice really has something unique and smooth. Could make any half-decent song sound better! 15. The Doors To me. Americans maybe first real rock band and still one of the best! 14. Mike Oldfield Many albums and varied styles. Somebody who went wherever he wanted and while I am not a huge fan of everything. There are plenty of good stuff. 13. The Temptations Motown had many acts. Quite many groups with several different singers. None more diverse and fun as The Temptations. Today maybe more a brand than a band but I'd still love to seem them live. So many great singers and strong songs over the years. 12. Thin Lizzy While I love rock and roll I can sort of understand others who don't. I think Thin Lizzy is a great way to start a journey from pop or current music into rock. It's simple, diverse, great lyrics and a great singer. Just more accessible than many other of the bands out there. I feel. 11. Kansas American prog rock. Doesn't sound like the british heroes King Crimson, Genesis, Yes and those but found a great sound of their own. 10. Wishbone Ash The foundation of my love for twin-guitar. Other bands become more successful but they are still out there and have a sound a really love. 9. The Rolling Stones I remember a guy in my class having Rolling Stones as his favorites. I never really cared much for the actual guy but checked out Rolling Stones because of it. With the years their music has grown and grown on me. I can appreciate anything for any era. I feel their later day is very underrated. While the albums often have some mediocre material (even the best of them!) .. There is still much to like. 8. Michael Jackson Just very nostalgic and probably my main gate into soul and rn'b music. I even think his earliest records before Off the Wall is quite good. 7. Judas Priest My favorite metal band. I love their sound and overall catalog. I like that they went into different eras but always still sounded like them. 6. Jethro Tull I love the energy, vibes and rhythms of this band. Just went their own way and Ian Andersson would bring most frontmen to absolute shame. Flute? Guitar? Dancing? Witty? Singer of advanced lyrics? Standing on one leg? 5. Van Halen There is an energy and attitude in american rock bands I love... The Doors, Grand Funk Railroad, Ted Nugent, Aerosmith and even Kiss that I really like. That combined with their sound just make me wanna go back in time and forget today! 4. Aerosmith Love classic Aerosmith. Really like their "come back". Not a huge fan of their later day. 3. Blue Öyster Cult Just so diverse songs. One trouble I find with other rock bands is that many songs sound sort of similar. Blue Öyster Cult had so influences and created something really unique. I also agree with Larry. Buck Dharma is a real favorite guitar player. 2. Queen I love how they went from a almost Black Sabbath heavy band to something completely different. Also wanting to explore and put the song first (okay, maybe not so much on Hot Space). 1. Deep Purple Man I miss Jon Lord (even though Don Airey is awesome). I like that they go their own way and make their own sound no matter who is in the band. The tree of Deep Purple leads to Gillan, Rainbow, Steve Morse Band, Captain Beyond, The Dixie Dregs, Warhorse, Whitesnake, Blackmore's Night, Trapeze, Black Country Communion and just keeps growing. In the end I go back to Deep Purple.

Larry,I don't listen to anything Glen listens to and somewhere along the line we lost him,the poor lost soul,he's now anti Beatles!,so very sad,we will pray for you Glen and Larry of course for me Paul and the Beatles are my number one and two, there's Paul and the Beatles and then there's everyone else,Glen oh Glen, what went wrong! Bob
lol………Bob….I am not anti Beatles….they are the greatest band of all time...I just don’t play their albums and made the decision that they shouldn’t make my list of favourites if I am not playing them..
It’s funny as time marches on who you end up liking who you never listened to much before. I’ve been listening to a lot of Elvis and have really found some amazing performances especially from his 69-73 tours. I would never have put him in a 25 list a year ago but I think he would make my top twenty. And the same for Aretha Franklin. She would make my top 10 at least and I’m a die hard 60’s-80’s classic rock guy

How you feel about the Beatles is how I feel about Iron Maiden!
