Can't wait to listen to this when I get back from work! I can listen to Sabbath and people talking about them(especially Chris and pete) all day! Shout out to all Sabbath fans watching this!🤘💯
Pete please get Chris to admit that he now likes Forbidden. He had a staunch dislike of it before the remix, however I don’t believe for a minute that he still feels the same way😀
Great show as always Pete and Chris. You never fail to come up with new tidbits that even I wasn't aware of. I was shocked to hear the consideration of Coverdale and Jon Olivia as singers of the band. That blew the top of my head clear off. Imagine the firepower that could've been unleashed but that would also mean missing the epic classics yet to come for Coverdale and Olivia. I was at the Seventh Star Tour in '86. Having the olds I remember sporadic things so reached in the tour vault for dates and locations. I was at the Detroit Cobo Arena portion of the tour. That was March 22, 1986. I was in college then. My jaw dropped discovering that Hughes first night with the band was the previous night in Cleveland's Public Hall so I was at night #2 of the Hughes schedule. WASP was the back up band. Last Command Tour for them I believe. They had paper-mache headless heads of band members impaled on poles (Barber Poles. Mind is sketchy on that) much like Vlad the Impaler style. Chris Holmes was wearing a Detroit Lions helmet in parts of the set. Hughes was in and out with his lyrics. Often lost in voice as the band played on. You noticed the botch on the Seventh Star material and I vividly remember a frozen Hughes voiceless during various parts of War Pigs. I still had a good time even though the audience was clearly shocked and not as energetic as it should've been. I wish Sabbath came to a working partnership with Ray Gillen. He had the 'it factor' something that Tony Martin lacked.
Awesome show guys - glad to see the Sabbath Stones continuing in 2025! Of all of the short-lived guys, I agree that Ray Gillen would have been AMAZING! Really too bad that they couldn't convince him to stick around.
Great show Pete and Chris. Thank you Chris for the great overview and time line with all the singers. I was never really sure on the Ray Gillan and Tony Martin situation until now. Thanks guys. Cheers
Hi guys. I saw the 7th star tour. When they got down 2 Atlanta Ray Gillen was the SINGER he was AWESOME. The show was a 7 .But it was the drummer who blew me away Eric Singer. I knew he was gonna be 1 ,2 watch. I was right. The stage set was awesome!!!🤘🤘
13:07 As I recall, back in 1980, Sabbath were getting "long in the tooth" as the old expression goes, and when a bunch of us high schoolers heard that Ronnie James Dio (the singer of rainbow) was going to be the new Black Sabbath singer, it felt like it was going to be a welcome shot in the arm for the band. If you've ever noticed; Sabbath's albums sold less and less as the 70's went on, according to the Billboard charts. Sometimes I think Sabbath should have stopped in '75 ala Deep Purple and "come taste the band." Great conclusion. Great show.
just listened again to dave walker singing juniors eyes with sabbath, quite good, gives it a more bluesy, fusion feel,a bit like sabbath meets jimmy dewar from robin trowers band.though i dont think the line up would have survived long,if ozzy hadnt come back
Jeff Fenholt was also the lead singer on a wonderful 80's hard rock album by a band called Joshua, called 'Surrender'. It is up on RUclips, lyrics are only vaguely Christian (its not proseltyzing).
There were 2 other hopefuls after Donato: Joe Cerisano from Silver Condr, (who was offered the gig by Don Arden & passed on it) & Kal Swan from Lion/Bad Moon Rising....
A few blanks filled: Nicky Moore from Samson was absolutely considered after Dio in 1982, but his huge girth made him a non-starter. And there ARE recordings of Dave Donatto with Sabbath on RUclips, easy to find. The most interesting rumors not discussed by you guys were the possible reunion with Dio in 1988 for what became the Headless Cross project. This was even reported in Circus magazine, so it was not just underground.
There's a demo of Dave Donato singing a song called No Way Out which later became The Shining on the Eternal Idol. You can also find demos of Jeff Fenholt doing demos for (apparently) The Geezer Butler Band on youtube too. What do you guys think about David Coverdale being in Sabbath, apparently Iommi asked him after Dio left before he met up with Gillan, I think his voice would have been perfect for singing the song Black Sabbath.
I completely agree about Doogie. I always thought he would have been great with Sabbath. He is on record saying he always wanted to work with Iommi. Would have been amazing.
Post Born Again, Sabbath were slated by the music press over here in the UK. One publication got two pictures, one of Sabbath minus a vocalist and another of Tom Jones and joined them together claiming Tom Jones was to be the new vocalist. Obviously it was meant as a joke but the music press is cruel over here. I have been into Sabbath since 1971 and such happenings like this cut deep I have to say.
The majority of people ( I know ) that have witnessed all iterations of Black Sabbath Live. Say that Tony Martin pulled off all era's best in a live setting. Of course this was when he was on. It is said at times he had issues live. It is written in some periodicals in the past that The Cross Purposes live shows were recorded when martin was sick with ( if memory serves ) either bronchitis or pneumonia. As a Sabbath fan from the beginning I love every era. My introduction to the band was "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" which I purchased at 17 yrs of age. Needless to say I bought all the preceding albums shortly thereafter. Fave era, the Osbourne years. Second Place it is tied between Dio and Martin, with a slight not to the Dio era because of the consistency of the lineups. If Iommi had the same lineup throughout the Martin era they may have toppled the Dio era (IMO...I know I am on a short list ) eventually. As for Ian Gillan and Glenn Hughes, for stand alone albums I frickin' love them! Slight nod to "Seventh Star" because as much as I love Ian, I'm more of a Hughes guy. Also, production is worse on "Born Again" as we all know. Great show guys, appreciate your efforts as always, Metal Head Joe🤘
Shout out to the Kerrang! April Fool's Day edition with the big exclusive article on Tom Jones joining Sabbath, complete with blueprints for a stonehenge-inspired stage set.
One of my many books (I forget which one) mentions that Iommi was interested in one more shot with Ray Gillen and made some calls, only to find out that Ray was dying. This would have had to have somewhere between "Dehumanizer" and "Cross Purposes" since Ray died in Dec. '93.
Great show guys! a couple of guys who i think would have been great in sabbath (and still have the chance to be, because they are still killing it) would be: John Bush Robert Lowe Ronnie Romero Joey Tempest Ray Alder what do you think?
I know this may be cliche but Rob Halford in Sabbath for an album and tour would be awesome. Mind you that would `ve been more exciting a few years back.
Gillan’s ‘82 album Magic was full of hints about a Purple reunion and basically alienated his current band. But then he joins Sabbath. He’s an odd duck.
Come on, guys. It's pretty well-known that the one song with Donato entitled "No Way Out" and later reworked into "The Shining" has surfaced. Sabbath had Bob Ezrin on board to produce around that time, so the Donato period was more than just the Kerrang photo shoot. It fell apart due to arguments over money between Iommi and Geezer.

Jeff Fenholdt helped form the band the way HE made it sound. The David Donato Kerrange interview was enough to get him fired from the band. Glenn Hughes did an interview where he stated that he was actually punched in the eye and had a fractured orbital bone and broken nose. Blood was running down his throat and was caking around his vocal chords. Plus his coke issues probably "might" have had something to do with that as well.
ex savoy brown guy dave walker briefly around never say die album, some never say die demos on youtube with walker, dont think they would have lasted long with walker, they needed a dio to create anything on par with classic ozzy sabbath
Jørn Lande would have been a perfect fit. Another missed uppertunity unfortunatly… Ronnie James Dio was the best singer in B.S hands down. R.I.P Maestro ✝️
Steve Grimmett in the band would have made me a very happy Sabbath fan. He had an awesome voice, he could do heavier gritty type of vocals but he could still sing melodically quite well on top of that. Wasted opportunity to say the least.
I give Fenholt more credit than you guys do. Geoff Nicholls and Fenholt (RIP both of them) were very instrumental in the genesis of the songs that would become "Seventh Star". There is plenty of debate as to whether "Star Of India" (as it was originally to be called) was a Sabbath album or an Iommi one, but Fenholt certainly made it past the audition stage. Geezer snapped him up after he split from Iommi for one of his early solo projects that died on the vine.
This is a timely show. I’m a fan of the first 4 Sabbath albums, but I wasn’t into the way the music was going & I lost interest. I did hear the 6th album. It was ok, but not really my thing. After that, I heard a song here & there, but I didn’t hear any Sabbath albums. I heard a few songs with Dio in Sabbath. My reaction then was, who is this guy (I had not heard Rainbow)? This doesn’t sound like Sabbath. As Pete said, I wasn’t happy, not interested. I’ve been hearing you guys always going on about all those Sabbath albums I didn’t hear, enough to get me curious. I bought a box of all the albums. I’m currently going through it. I’m up to Headless Cross, TYR is next. With those albums fresh in my mind, I can actually understand what you guys are talking about (at least up to Headless Cross). My general reaction to the 80s Sabbath… if I was to rank the 80s albums, I’d put Heaven & Hell, & Born Again, at the top, 7th Star at the bottom. The music is ok. I don’t strongly like any of it. For me Sabbath is those 1st 4 albums, with the next 2 albums being ok. The rest, I haven’t heard anything that really impresses me.
So based on on vocal ability, pitch & range et al, Ozzy is probably the 5th best vocalist to ever front Black Sabbath. I'd go: -RJD -Glenn Hughes -Tony Martin -Ray Gillen -Ozzy -Ian Gillan(voice was shot by then & Born Again is SO poorly produced)
Latest Sabbath-related news....this in from Classic Rock / Louder on January 2nd, 2025.......""""It's adrenaline-filled and balls-to-the-wall": Tony Iommi and Glenn Hughes have recorded a song with Robbie Williams - Former Take That star Robbie Williams has confirmed the unlikely collaboration"""".
I have no interest whatsoever in seeing a sabbath reunion at this point. That would just be sad and hard to watch. Ozzy can’t do it and that ship has sailed. They did the final tour and it lived up to my expectations. But it is time to move on. That would be great if there were a remix of Born again. To me it is almost unlistenable. It is a travesty what happened with the production. I had demos I bought in the 80’s from local bands at shows that have better sound quality than that. One of my regrets is not seeing sabbbath with Tony Martin. I just wasn’t interested at that time and had left Sabbath behind. Years later I listened to eternal idol and headless cross and really enjoyed those. Tyr also, cross purposes I was never a huge fan of. Can't wait to listen to this when I get back from work!
I can listen to Sabbath and people talking about them(especially Chris and pete) all day!
Shout out to all Sabbath fans watching this!🤘💯
The KING 🤴 returns !!! 👍💯
I can listen to. King 🤴 and Pete talk about my top 5 ( at worst) favorite group allllll day. Thanks guys. Love it 👍💯
Correction. Ok. My favorite **** 👍
Alo is great !@@garyjoyce2160
Thanks Pete & Chris! Always informative boys!
King Alo is back 🎉🎉. Cross purposes is amazing and Forbidden 2024 sounds like a brand new album.
I've said this was overdue, so hell yeah the King and Pete talking Sabbath! 🤘🏼
Great conversation, I learned a lot. Could listen to you guys talk Sabbath for hours.
It's a shame Ian Gillan never made a second album with Sabbath. He sounds great on 'Born Again'!
Born Again definitely needs a remix. That was a hated album for so many years but was discovered as a hidden gem
I never had the love for it that everybody else on the podcasts seem to have. But a remix could go a long way in changing my opinion on this album.
Pete please get Chris to admit that he now likes Forbidden. He had a staunch dislike of it before the remix, however I don’t believe for a minute that he still feels the same way😀
So glad to see this segment back! Happy new year to you guys!
Hell ya, glad this segment is finally back!
Great seeing you two guys together

This wait has been far too long. THANK YOU, gents.
Always a great video with Chris.😃👍🤘
There is one song from the Donato "era" called "No Way Out", which is an early version of "The Shining". It is on YT.
Yes ! One of my favorite SOT shows is back !
Great show! Great topic! Always love seeing you guys together...Have a safe trip Chris
Great show Pete and Chris. Thank you Chris for the great overview and time line with all the singers. I was never really sure on the Ray Gillan and Tony Martin situation until now. Thanks guys. Cheers
Made my day!
Great series - love it!
Great Show!!
The King is Back!!
Great to see Chris again
ive been waiting this time so long🎉
Great show guys! Man I'd love to see a Never Say Die deluxe release with Dave Walker vocals on a bonus disc.
That would be amazing!!
I was excited when Dio was announced as the singer.
Juniors Eyes with Dave Walker is amazing
13:07 As I recall, back in 1980, Sabbath were getting "long in the tooth" as the old expression goes, and when a bunch of us high schoolers heard that Ronnie James Dio (the singer of rainbow) was going to be the new Black Sabbath singer, it felt like it was going to be a welcome shot in the arm for the band. Great show.
Need more Alo in 2025 ! Good show Peter and Chris 👍
I missed the Tony Martin box so I'm glad to hear they'd be released separately.
🌠U GUYS ROCK ...GOOD SHOW ..AS USUAL
Ray Gillen not only did Eternal Idol in 1987, but also sang on the second Phenomena album that same year, along with Glenn Hughes.
Great show fellas!!!!!
Yesssssss !..! !..!
The King is back
Please. Next ...Born Again deluxe edition! Great show guys
This was the show I missed the most. You had me worried there 🍺🤘
just listened again to dave walker singing juniors eyes with sabbath, quite good, gives it a more bluesy, fusion feel,a bit like sabbath meets jimmy dewar from robin trowers band.though i dont think the line up would have survived long,if ozzy hadnt come back

I read a article where Tony iommi once said he was trying to get steve Marriott to join sabbath at one time

I bought hat Blu-ray of Live Evil, haven't heard it yet. I too haven't heard great things about it, but it's what I collect.
The remixes from the Martin era are pretty good..Shedds new light on those albums.
I agree wholeheartedly with Chris: Ray Gilen sounded immense with Sabbath. he is the 'lost' Sabs singer. He could truly cover the Ozzy and Dio eras.
There is a pretty good sabbath King biscuit flower hour concert from the 1983 show with Gillian
Disturbing the Priest is amazing.
Probably the most sinister Black Sabbath song all together.. 😎🤘
I completely agree about Doogie. I always thought he would have been great with Sabbath. He is on record saying he always wanted to work with Iommi. Would have been amazing.
You mentioned Paul Rodgers. After The Firm, he definitely had a strong enough voice for it.
Didn't know about the Jon Oliva story...man that would have been crazy to witness
Kal Swann was also considered as a Sabbath singer by Tony and Geezer in 1985.
"The guy with all the scribbly tattoos on his face"
That is why he is the King. 👑🤘🏼
Has there been any talk of reissuing the Iommi solo record with the different singers? Surprised they would reissue Fused before that one.
I bought the two reissues, they sound great. Not so crazy about the album you refer to, although the Ian Astbury track is killer.
Post Born Again, Sabbath were slated by the music press over here in the UK. Obviously it was meant as a joke but the music press is cruel over here. I have been into Sabbath since 1971 and such happenings like this cut deep I have to say.
Yep, I remember the Tom Jones thing in Kerrang, I think. Was going to mention that as well.
My favorite Sabbath is with Dio hands down.
The majority of people ( I know ) that have witnessed all iterations of Black Sabbath Live. Say that Tony Martin pulled off all era's best in a live setting. Of course this was when he was on. How about the Aptil Fools Kerrang magazine edition that had a mock article of a collaboration of Sabbath and Tom Jones. It was setup by Ozzy
Shout out to the Kerrang! April Fool's Day edition with the big exclusive article on Tom Jones joining Sabbath, complete with blueprints for a stonehenge-inspired stage set.
Pete, Joe Lynn Turner is great and would have been a nice addition to Sabbath
One of my many books (I forget which one) mentions that Iommi was interested in one more shot with Ray Gillen and made some calls, only to find out that Ray was dying. This would have had to have somewhere between "Dehumanizer" and "Cross Purposes" since Ray died in Dec. '93.
I gotta check out The Shinning with Ray Gillen (I assume it's out there? Is it great?)
Yep, the reissue of Eternal Idol has a bonus disc of all the recordings with Ray.
Great show guys! a couple of guys who i think would have been great in sabbath (and still have the chance to be, because they are still killing it) would be:
John Bush
Robert Lowe
Ronnie Romero
Joey Tempest
Ray Alder
what do you think?
I could picture Rob Lowe (Solitude Aeturnus/Candlemass) fronting a doomed out Black Sabbath.. 🤔🤗
I know this may be cliche but Rob Halford in Sabbath for an album and tour would be awesome. Mind you that would `ve been more exciting a few years back.
How about ranking all vocalists for sabbath ?
See? you don't need any real news, just talk Sabbath and we'll all watch. Thanks! 🍺🤘
Gillan’s ‘82 album Magic was full of hints about a Purple reunion and basically alienated his current band. But then he joins Sabbath. He’s an odd duck.
Excellent NWA sweatshirt too. Long live the National Wrestling Alliance!!
PC .
Jorn would have been a good fit.
Born Again remix this year? Surely so, it’s a long time coming…
PETE hope you read this i have a black sabbath cd called the unknown voices and rarities it has a demo with david donato called no way out ( the shining ) two jeff fenholt demos star of india and dark side of love glenn hughes doing war pigs live an ozzy song scary dreams dave walker doing junior eyes and rjd bad blood live and three uncredited demos raising hell the next time # 2 and caught in the middle im pretty certain their rjd songs on the back of the cd it says that its limited to 300 copies i ordered it from some sight on the computer cant remember name of the sight i know it wasn't ebay or amazon wish i could remember for you
Where’s your short about Nevermore returning with new lineup? And Zetro leaving Exodus again?
It's a shame they didn't make a few more records with Dio in the 80s.
I think Whitfield Crane would make a great candidate for a Sabbath vocalist! Voice still in great shape and he can handle a crowd. Plus UKJ recorded great covers of Sweet Leaf and NIB!
Plus Joey Belladona could give it a good go too, would have made a great signing for Sabbath as I guess he would have been out of Anthrax when the Dio reunion came about!
Agree with you on sabbath split
I am under the impression Sharon who i despise saved Heavy Metal promoting Ozzy .
Ian Gillan
ex savoy brown guy dave walker briefly around never say die album, some never say die demos on youtube with walker, dont think they would have lasted long with walker, they needed a dio to create anything on par with classic ozzy sabbath
Jørn Lande would have been a perfect fit.
Another missed uppertunity unfortunatly…
Ronnie James Dio was the best singer in B.S hands down.
R.I.P Maestro ✝️
Messiah Marcolin of Candlemass could have been a great frontman for Sabs.
I think Robert Lowe would fit great. Not sure how he would sound doing the ozzy era,buf you know he would slay the Dio,Martain sfuff
I thought sHeavy was Canadian?
Dave Walker singing in Sabbath is almost like Paul Rodgers joining Sabbath, odd at least!
Steve Grimmett in the band would have made me a very happy Sabbath fan. He had an awesome voice, he could do heavier gritty type of vocals but he could still sing melodically quite well on top of that. Wasted opportunity to say the least.
If He’ll is real, Born again is one its master pieces.
David Byron or John Lawton would have fit perfectly for Sabbath.
Black Sabbath with Dave Donato ruclips.net/video/Bs-Zs2bgJGM/видео.html
Born Again is the last great Black Sabbath album, imho.
You don't like 'Dehumanizer'? 🤔
Kenny Stewart from Dirty Tricks would of been great
Even kinda looks like Ozzy
Oliva would have been amazing!
I give Fenholt more credit than you guys do. Geoff Nicholls and Fenholt (RIP both of them) were very instrumental in the genesis of the songs that would become "Seventh Star". Does black Sabbath have the record for the most line up changes? Or interim changes 😂
So based on on vocal ability, pitch & range et al, Ozzy is probably the 5th best vocalist to ever front Black Sabbath. I'd go:
-RJD
-Glenn Hughes
-Tony Martin
-Ray Gillen
-Ozzy
-Ian Gillan(voice was shot by then & Born Again is SO poorly produced)
We need Rich Catino to complete the “Trio of Doom.”
