Enjoyed this especially since I follow both your channels. In the US it seems people I've talked with over the years shy away from smaller cars because they think they're less safe. They'll use comparisons of say a Chevy Spark getting hit by a Chevy Suburban saying they'd be safer in the SUV. However, there are still many of us that prefer smaller better performing cars. I'm 72 now and drive a 2016 Chevy Spark EV and if it had a larger battery pack of say 32kW and gave me a range of 150 or better on a full charge I'd be set and that is why I have been waiting on an id3 or Cupra Born to come to the states. I'd be happy with the eUP or Seat since they'd be closer to my Spark EV. I drove Corvair Corsas for decades and have been a motorcyclist for 50+ years, maybe they have tainted my view away from bigger vehicles but basically Kyle is right. Outside of the largest cities, there are basically wide open spaces so having bigger vehicles is not a constraint although we know gas mileage is not so good.
Recently drove a rental in the US. Wide roads, generous driveways, nose-in parking and cheap petrol / gas lead to a taste for larger cars it seems. Our rental was one of the smaller cars parking in our hotel each evening.
Americans also don't fit in smaller cars anymore...

Ironically, I live in the USA and have owned 3 Golfs. Not GTIs. However, all of them are diesels (mk1, mk4, mk7). @KyleConnor, I bought my mk4 Golf TDI from Ed Carroll back in 2001. My folks bought my mk1 Rabbit diesel from them in 1981. We've got a bit of a history with them.

Side note - could somebody tell VW that kWh/h is the same as kW (power consumption)? I don't suppose it hurts anything, but it seems pointless and annoying to include the h/h in their displays.

Great discussion, gentlemen. It would be interesting to have a comparison between the ID3 and ID4 dimensions, features and performance in a future video. It was funny to hear how long it takes VW to do a simple software update for the screens, yet they are working on countless modes and displays for the GTI. Let's hope we see that car before 2030 😊
Oh, how I would LOVE to be able to buy the ID.3 here in the US! It would be a nearly *perfect* car for me - seriously. Small and *practical* - I am tall (6'-4" / 193cm) and we had two eGolf, and I owned a Golf - they are wonderful cars!

If we get the electric GTI, thatll be the closest thing to the ID.3 in the States, just more performance based, I suppose. We also have a bunch of sportbacks/coupes here. I'm surprised that we don't get the ID.5, especially since we get the Q8 e-tron sportback.
The difference between the loud people requesting the id3 and the predicted sales numbers reminds me of the introduction of the Porsche Boxter and their SUV model - sorry I forgot that name and I don't care. The 911 fans were screaming that Porsche sold their soul but both Boxter and that suvy model sold in such number it made Porsche again a great brand.
That was surprise. Seeing Kyle on Chris's channel, lots of fun. Only normally catch the occasional one from each but they seem to get on well together. 😁🤩
I really like the collaboration between the two of them it would be very helpful for Kyle to have him around to sometimes translate it also help both of them for getting more subs.

I'm a U.S. VW fanboy who bought a 2018 Golf 1.8 after wanting one since the 1990's. I also have a 2010 Passat which is my main driver. The Golf changed to the 1.4 in 2019 and was cancelled after that.
I do have some unique circumstances that make big vehicles a bad fit for me. I'm very happy with my Golf and with only 13k miles on it, it will be my Daughter's car when she starts driving in two years.

Mind you, watching the various EV channels, SUVs and seven seater vehicles seem very popular in the US market and also probably explains why small hatchbacks aren’t for sale. Plus larger roads could also be the reason why they prefer larger cars because of the space inside. Great episode.
I hope you get to go with Kyle in October and view the ID7 concept car. VW should have sent you an invitation as you have done a lot to promote their cars!
I see many prius c's, mirage's, fit's etc running around a lot more than I used too. The trend is slowly turning around but very few care to notice.
If America didnt have a weight problem perhaps more people would buy smaller cars especially considering a lot less people are having kids nearly eliminating a need for more space more often than not. Honestly true wagons would be more fitting here but one can wish....

Interesting discussion. ID.3 has an over-engineered platform for a small hatch, which means it's a fantastic set of wheels, but with a cheaper interior etc. to offset the cost of the platform. Once it has the rear motor upgrade, and also the GTX treatment as an option, ID.3 will be where it should have always been (assuming further progress on the infotainment system). But at a price.
Was that circus across the road really the HQ for the VW EV Strategy Team? If so, it seems appropriate.

A great collaboration! It's a shame we don't have the id.3 here. However, I like the VW e-Up (and its Seat and Škoda twins) the most. I wish more cars had the bracket on the dashboard to put the phone to "talk" to the car. I dislike the silly tablets that most cars today have. When I was young and going on a car trip, I wanted to leave home and the office behind. I did not need to stare at a screen and remind myself of life outside the car. The silly screens of today look like the car maker nailed them on the dashboard at the last minute. In the e-Up, I could drive without a screen when I want. That's so nice that I probably would NEVER put a phone there. Aloha and Auf Wiedersehen from your subscribers in Hawai'i.
Ottawa Golf Nut here. Mk2 and now mk7.5 base. I feel the same as your wife. This city is my home town, but I'm not aligned with the lifestyle.
Spot on about the US market. Quebec wants small European cars and just can't get them. GTI and Golf were quite popular here but they are nowhere to be seen anymore. A pickup as a daily driver seems so futile and a waste of money for most people but you have it just in case. The oil crisis of the 70s took care of that, but only temporarily.
It's also true that the US roads are sized for enormous cars and there is no penalty from a driving experience. But it may have more to do with historical trends. Leno like to repeat the "Lower, Longer, Meaner"... as a US car slogan and that was certainly true of the cars of the 50s, 60s and 70s where they earned the reputation of LawnYatch on their own. So long before trade US-EU was a thing, cars had a different form factor across both continents. At that time, the big 3 leaned hard on enormous cars and got caught off guard by the oil crisis with nothing small to offer.
Those huges american cars wouldn't fly in Europe. I remember roads in Rome and it's clear why FIATs are as small as they are. Nothing bigger would fit anywhere in the country.
I love the Golf and the hatchback form factor -- I tcied to buy the last remaining e-Golfs in 2020, but the dealers were not being honst with their pricing, and I bought the Mini SE.
If VW bring the ID3 or ID2 to the states, I won't buy it. I'd love the exterior, but I hate the interier -- the touch- everything and the screen sitting on top of the dash (why not have it as part of the center console like the Golf?!) -- the unnecessary futuristic look.
Live in Canada and recently purchased Kona EV. Would have given ID3 a hard look. As it has better charging speed.
On paper, but the charging curve on the ID.3 isn't amazing. You've got a good car either way.

I have family members that insist on AWD. That has kept us from cool small cars like the Volvo C30 or some of the Minis. To be fair, AWD keeps you from having to install chains when they're otherwise required in some of the west coast states. There is no provision in the code for snow tires.

Oh, and I agree that all EVs should have a "nerd" page. Some of us care about what is happening in our cars. I understand that most US drivers consider a vehicle an appliance and no more complex that a toaster. But for some, ignorance is bliss. C'est la vie.

Yes, America equates hot hatch or budget hatch. That’s why the BMW 640i GT didn’t sell. Luxury sport big hatchback is an oxymoron in the US.

The only reason that software should take that long is if it is life-or-safety critical. The ABS control software might reasonably need months or years to write and validate. Simply displaying existing data should be trivial to write and QA. Even if you do have to translate it to a dozen languages and get lawyers to review each of them and the associated translations.
Do you think the older id3, id4 & Id Buzz will ever get access to the revised 4.0 software? Can older Teslas be updated with latest software or are they limited on the updates they can receive?
It's really weird how the car makers come up with these requirements. If you have a gas car, you want a fuel gauge. Sure, a DTE figure has come later and may be useful, but a gauge gives you the information at s glance. And what about your phone, does it display hours left in the battery? No, it shows percentage.
My old Zoe when charging only show percentage of baterry and supposed time left.

The id.2 gti fwd only and around a mini Cooper ev in size isn't going to do MUCH in late 2026 or 2027&without the tax credits to. 👍🏻

I live in rural Oregon and would have bought a VW iD3 the instant it was available. The iD4 doesn't cut it with us. A hatchback is always better. I understand the need for large pickups and own a Nissan truck for hauling stuff and a Range Rover for long trips in comfort. Heck, in Montana the IGA stores have shopping carts as big as an F150, but people there can drive 100 miles or more to get to a supermarket. But I'm from Europe originally and understand just how ignorant Americans are. General education here is awful. Yup, most Americans don't understand EVs at all.
They have vehicles like F-150 and Cybertruck and it's _ID.3_ that would not be safe enough for pedestrians???

As far as the chinese built thing, I think there is a difference needs to be understood, between something being assembled in China, by an American or European company versus one wholly owed by a Chinese company. Either way one is supporting the Chinese government, but in the latter directly and in a more substantial way. Everyone is of course (at least where these sort of freedoms are allowed) to choose according to their own needs and morals, but one should be aware of the issues and nuances in making such a large purchase from a country with a recent human rights record as China.
The VW Taos is basically a repacked Seat Ateca.
The EU countries of Malta, Cyprus and Ireland MUST buy their Tesla cars from the Chinese factory, as that is where the RHD model is exclusively made. No chance to get one from Berlin. (Same applies to UK, Australia, New Zealand etc. But then they are not EU.)
ID.4 is in the USA, but not ID.5 ; I do not get it.
A million euros a page because they analyse all the details and they came up with that UI... wow
They did some surveys years after and most younger costumers said "it looks like the UI of an old peoples phone".
The latest VW software works very well, but it still looks awful

Volkswagen America dictates the models to be available for USA and Canada. In Québec Canada, it is the Golf and the Jetta station wagon that are preferred not the SUV. We are not happy with Volkswagen America’s attitude. The ID3 would sell very well in our province

Sorry, but to ignore the moral level of buying a Chinese car is a very bad thing in my opinion. 1. China supports a deal between North Korea and Russia to supply weapons that Russia wants to conquer Ukraine 2. In China, the government ignores that subcontractors in the auto industry often have inhumane working conditions and Uyghurs are abused as slaves. 3. China is not and has no plans to be a state where human rights are respected 4. China has the same ambitions as Russia to occupy or control neighboring states, which is typical of dictatorial regimes. That's why I'm very surprised by your sentence: "I don't mind at all that the car is made in China" ...
The US market is rigged in favor of bigger cars. Car makers more or less collectively cut off marketing, and then production capacity for smaller cars; the "chicken tax", a protectionist tax on imported light pickups in retaliation for measures by other countries against hormone-fed poultry imports from the US, has been exploited by US manufacturers steering customers to larger trucks; the fuel economy measures are separated by segment in the US rather than applied overall to a manufacturer's range, effectively removing any disincentive against bigger vehicles, an arrangement that was aggravated by the Obama administration; US fuel economy requirements are too weak, a situation aggravated by the Trump administration; and there are restrictions against importing/exporting vehicles between the US, Mexico and Canada despite the fact we're supposed to be a free trade area, so we don't get access to some nice smaller Mexico-only or Canada-only models (e.g. quite a number of Stellantis products they only get in Mexico; some Canada-only trims for certain manufacturers); and US safety regulations don't consider people outside the vehicle, only occupants within it, so danger to pedestrians, cyclists and other motorists isn't considered.
