    Levar Burton taught an entire generation to read and pilot the Enterprise. Plus Roots is pretty damn important.

      It is a bit slow to start as it sets up the universe… still full of great writing and jokes but by the end you WILL curse the people that cancelled it. You almost HAVE to watch it as it is THEE pop culture example of a show cancelled too soon. It is only 14 episodes… come on… do it.

    Reading Rainbow was a show on PBS in the 1980s and '90s that included the host, LeVar Burton, going on wacky adventures intercut with celebrities reading children's books as the pictures came on the screen.

    Firefly is excellent, but it had one season that was thankfully and brilliantly tied up by a movie that has to be one of the most overlooked sci-fi gems of its day. Possibly some of Whedons best work ever.

    I'm sure your Patrons have mentioned this by now, but Levar Burton starred in Roots, a very culturally significant mini series based on slavery in America. His name was Kunta Kinte, and there's a pretty harrowing scene where he is forced to change his name to Toby. Loving these reactions! 😊✌️

    This episode was the creator’s commentary on the popular documentary-style show that were becoming a hit at the time. Apparently they were faster and easier to shoot for the reasons Abed mentioned. This show had a history of working long hours to get everything it wanted. Shows like modern family crew and actors didn’t have to work these long hours. They shot this episode much faster then their other episodes too 😅

    You guys missed Pierce overdosed on a bench at the end of last episode. Thought it was a soft ending lmao. Also, when Jeff beats up Pierce, there is a quick shot of Annie being the only one helping Pierce back inside. Evidence of why she’s his favorite.

    Among the other iconic roles mentioned in Star Trek and Roots he was a household name for kids watching reading rainbow almost in the same sphere as a Mr Rogers. The song is probably one of the iconic and recognizable themes in television history

    I am always curious about how people will react to Levar Burton. In the US, you can generally have one of three entry points to knowing who he is. Outside of the US, it doesn't seem he has as much status.
    1- Roots, if you were alive in the 70s, it played on tv all the time.
    2- Reading Rainbow - a program that basically raised a lot of kids on public television sparking their interest in reading.
    3- Star Trek: TNG - the one with the most global appeal and I'm always curious as to if people in other countries will know.
    I've learned from other reactions that if you don't know him from the first one, the Kunta Kinte joke does not play well lol.

    • @notoriouslybratty
      @notoriouslybratty 26 дней назад +1

      @@Missy-24 it pops off at episode 6 with Our Mrs. Reynolds and is pretty much banger after banger afterwards. BUT it really helps to have watched the first five for all world building and establishing of who each character is. Episode 6 is where they play more with all the characters and relationships they established. If you don’t like episode 6… then yeah it isn’t for you (which is okay, not everything is for everyone) - I recommend if you try it again or they react to it start at episode 6. That is the episode to gauge if this is the show for you or not.
