      @@dazedconfuzed6 Saw another interview where they took truth posted vs fiction. He has a Bachelors, but I can't remember the full official, it's multi and pre law. He had tested (LSAT) and was ready, so crazy sharp. This after coming out of heroin addiction at 18. Really good interview, wish I had the link.

    Also, their cover of Sound of Silence is PHENOMENAL.

  • @rofire9
    @rofire9 8 лет назад +740

    I honestly think they did outdo the Sound of Silence song because David's vocals make that cover so much more powerful than the original. They were right that it didn't need to be more upbeat or aggressive, but their skill made it so much more emotional to me than the original.

      I agree with you completely

    • @bullo247
      @bullo247 8 лет назад +8

      +rofire9 I get where you're coming from but I'd honestly say it was too powerful for the song. The original is so haunting and empty, similar to the meaning of the song. I think making it more powerful detracted from the implied feel of the song.

    • @rofire9
      @rofire9 8 лет назад +22

      bullo247 You make a good point, but the way I see it, the lyrics convey the emptiness of the song, while the power added by the strings and David denotes the feeling of helplessness and pain that accompanies that emptiness. That's just how I see it. Both versions have strengths and weaknesses. I just prefer Disturbed's version.

    • @faderofficial4379
      @faderofficial4379 8 лет назад

      +rofire9 it's not an emotional song, it's a very prophetic song and a dark one at that. Covers can never ever out do the original, because the original is the way it was meant to be.

    • @rofire9
      @rofire9 8 лет назад +14

      Dark Child In order to have any meaning the song must have an emotional context. Otherwise it is just a bunch of words being sung. It is the emotion that draws attention from the listener and gets the point of the song across. Both songs had that emotional context. The only real difference is that they approached that context differently. The best way to get someone's attention is evoke an emotional response. Both the cover and the original do that. Therefore, in that respect, they are equal. As for prophetic, I would say poetic would be a more accurate description, but I will agree is does have a certain quality about that lend itself well to the prophetic description. One last note - I know you have your opinion and you have no intention of changing yours just as I will never change mine. All I am doing here is explaining my point of view. I am not trying to change your mind. You have a very interesting view of both songs. You also make some very logical and valid points when it comes to discussion. Thank you for sharing your views with me as they have helped me take a closer look at both songs and how I perceive them.

    Your powerful cover of Sound Of Silence opened up a whole new window into that lyric. I am an old hippie who is still in search of the deeper meaning of everything. So in that light, I must say that this brought me to a vast place of understanding. It also prompted me to read the lyrics out loud to myself, and I was reminded what a brilliant writer Paul Simon is. Thanks for giving that song the attention it deserves.

    • @Harv72b
      @Harv72b 8 лет назад +17

      +Kathy Zimmerman The best analysis I've read is that Simon & Garfunkel's recording was a warning of what the world was heading toward: a dark and foreboding performance. Disturbed's cover sounds more accusatory of what we have now become: angrier and more powerful (certainly vocally), while retaining the same haunting tone of the original.
      I would love to hear Paul Simon's opinion of the cover.

      +Kathy Zimmerman I, too, am an old hippie. In our day (for lack of a better word), the original was amazing. I remember being totally stoned and singing along with my 45 record. David's voice is amazing but the fact that we can see his facial expressions make this song so powerful. I can't imagine that Paul Simon and Art Garfunkle would have anything but praise for David Draiman and Disturbed. One hippie to another........

    So, "Fire It Up" is a fun song. That's it, it's that simple, and I love it when I can jam to it in my car. As far as "Sound of Silence" goes, I'd heard my daughter needs back surgery (for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis) that day, and I was listening to it in bed that night, with all the thoughts and images in my head of my 13 year old girl in the hospital, and "Sound of Silence" came on and in the dark of my bedroom, I cried. Then, I slept. And it was amazing.

    I don't know how he gets through the song without breaking down. I heard this on the radio today and several repetitions since. I cant make it through without breaking into tears. The emotion he puts into his performance starts out humble and then envelops you and is absolutely wrenching as his voice soars over the last half of the song.
    The fact that it hit him in the same visceral way is awesome.

    I remember at one point, I used to really not be into Disturbed. I wasn't really into aggressive rock. I've been in a few cover bands, and one or two of them did cover Down with the Sickness. It was actually a very cathartic song to perform.
    A song that sold me on Disturbed was "Prayer". I loved the feel of that song...the vocals especially.... as a singer, vocals are what sell a song for me, and David Draiman struck a home run with me on that one.
    Then I heard their song "Darkness". I remembered "WOW! David Draiman has a beautiful voice...I bet he and Disturbed could smoke a song like 'Dust in the Wind'!" I was cemented. David Draiman had become my favorite singer of the last couple of decades.
    Then I heard their cover of "The Sound of Silence". Any and all doubt was removed from that point forward. The integrity and honor they do this song is beyond any criticism or reproach anyone can level at it. It is one of the most beautiful covers I've ever heard in my life...and DIsturbed have done some bad-ass covers before....but this one....I don't think there are enough superlatives that can be said about it.

    I'll say one thing about pot...I work a very physical job and I could pop pills all day long but I work through the pain come home and have some off my vaporizer and the pain goes away. Tell me, what is more damaging to my body, ingesting pills and chemicals or a bit of a natural substance that also helps me sleep?

    The Sound of Silence.... a song that has been in my soul since it first came out way back when. It's format then fit the times and Simon & Garfunkel couldn't have been outdone. NOW ... Disturbed's version moved me to tears and re-fired my tired rebel heart because the cover is presented in a way that fits the current times. The same issues exist today as then ... but more dark. This cover couldn't be more perfect. I love it ... and I love what it says to my heart. Both versions live side by side in my soul. And David, your vocals ... OMG we need to hear your voice more.

    It's a beautifully done cover and makes you think about the original in a different way. Which is exactly what I'd hope to feel when a band does a cover.
    The first time I heard this with my 4 year old daughter I started singing. Now whenever it comes on she's says to me "Daddy, sing it." It's a wonderful way to introduce her to a band I grew up with as well as one of the classical masterpieces from the 60s at the same time.

    sound of silence, especially the video, feels like a tribute to dead musicians. the band is in some ethereal place, like another dimension, a transitional world, where musicians cross over to the afterlife, and disturbed are watching and narrating, in the graveyard of lost songs, that will never be completed and played, for the living. very touching video. i honestly needed this after the death of so many great rockstars, recently. bowie, dio, lemmy, hanneman and weiland, i will miss you all.

    I have to agree with Jordan: It out did the original. THIS is how this song and it's powerful lyrics was meant to be played. I'm 65 and grew up with Simon & Garfunkel but David and the band hit it right on. The first time I heard I cried openly for it's beauty, honesty and power. WELL DONE! And I bought the album after hearing that song. √√√

    I did not even know who Disturbed was until after hearing this song and doing some research. (Okay maybe I live under a rock-or maybe I am just old) The cover of Sounds of Silence is amazing and so much more moving than the original. It is like it should have been to begin with.

    I'm 52, and have adored the S&G version of Sound of Silence for most of my life. I was pretty leery of listening to Disturbed's cover, but I'm so glad I did! David Draiman needs to sing acoustically more often! His "normal" voice is simply amazing. It's so smooth, hypnotic, and addicting. I'm also grateful they treated the cover with the respect such an iconic song deserves. This is going on my playlist.

    He was right, they didn't and couldn't outdo the original but they did put another spin on a already epic song and made it more epic and heavy in their own way. Absolutely incredible, made me have chills and misty eye's too.
