      I don’t care how awful your childhood was: your actions are still your own, and you should be punished accordingly. I say this as someone who was disowned by her father for a facial deformity while I watched him try to drunkenly kidnap my two siblings. The next few days my siblings and I spent at our school was beyond stressful; and out of stress, I snapped and attacked a bully. I was still punished accordingly because I hurt her, even though I did it to protect someone else and the school staff knew how stressed out and scared my family was.
      Our father was never punished for this or any of the crap he did after: he’s still free to this day, even after beating and robbing my grandpa for a measly WiFi box.
      My father grew up with a father who’d beat his mother, him, and his two siblings. He still deserves to be in jail for what he did to my mom, grandpa, and my siblings. I also say this as someone whose mother was sexually abused by her own grandpa as a child: and you don’t see her doing any of the crap my father did.
      I get that childhood trauma effects people greatly, but your actions are still your own despite your reasons and if you hurt someone, you deserve a punishment. The only exceptions are when you have to in order to defend yourself or someone else.

      as a former heavy drinker, i think its because when you get used to being fairly plastered on a daily basis you dont really notice it,
      not as a matter of simply alcohol tolerance but because you get used to that state of mind because thats the state your ususally in, so you dont realize that its screwing with your cognitive ability's and motor skills because thats just how you are from your perspective. and because of that like you said, you might not even be aware that you are drunk untill you pass out because from your perspective, you basically wake up that way, you have a few bottles on the nightstand and when you wake up youve already mixed a drink before youve started the coffee
      The way i put it is you dont realize how much alcohol slows you down untill you knock it off for a bit, now in my defense i never drove while i was drinking because i had enough of an idea that my perspective was off to understand it was a bad idea, but i can without a doubt see how it could happen. As a kid, I recall having the first mindset, that "all I have to my name is my suffering, and by god, I'm going to share it with the world," and HONESTLY BELIEVED that this was a noble thing. Fortunately, my desire for friends caused me to finally work on improving my character traits after one too many people told me that I "suck," which made me angry (but by that point, I was too tired of being lonely that I was too desperate to remain stubborn), so, fortunately, I adapted the second mindset, and want to help people. Unfortunately, there was still a lot of bugs to sort out, as I recall being a young adult and wanted to become president in order to use my authority to punish the "haves" and help only the "victims," which is nothing short of dictatorship and abuse, so was still every bit as self-righteous as when I was a kid. I'm still reminded that I need to be nicer to people even with all this (conscious) hard work, but, despite this, I still hope I'd made much improvement since then.
      Does having good intentions to be a good person count as being the same thing? I don't have any plans to stop working on my own character improvement. I think being a good person generally just means _trying_ to be a good person. I read something once that said something like "If you worry whether or not you are actually a good person, you are. The truly bad ones never worry about that." And going from a mindset of passing your pain on to others all the way to the other end of preventing the pain of others is an incredible journey, and certainly took a lot more effort than most have to expend. You did a great thing, so don't beat yourself up over what you did or thought before - use it as a tool to see how far you've come. I live in Korea........Love Motels are a common thing here. They are actually pretty normal. Many of them are very nice and CLEAN, and just like a normal hotel. For the most part, younger couples who aren't married yet live with their parents, so they go to love motels. The nicer motels aren't necessarily dirty places for hookers (though there are places like that lol). A lot of travelers use them because they are cheap and have bathtubs!! Most apartments here do not have bathtubs. Some love motels have those sex mirrors, but others are just like normal hotel rooms with sound proofing and they like leave condoms in your room haha. Many smaller apartments here (that students or young workers live in) aren't soundproof either... so that's another reason to check into a love motel with your significant other! I really like them and I used to think they would be nasty too! They are just cheaper hotel rooms really! Sounds weird... but they aren't that bad. Part of life here and a great place to stay on a weekend trip to another city!!

    Back when these murders happened, the Korean police had a very militarist attitude. It was to the point where people even protested against them and they got beaten up badly. The police had a very bad attitude in some places so it shouldn't be a surprise even if the local police got bribed and kept things on the down low for these criminals.
    About that road blocks in Seoul that Simon was wondering about. This case happened at the same time of Hwaseong murders case. It was a heinous serial killings that happend from late 80s to mid 90s in Hwaseong near Seoul. Police got a very bad repute bc of that case. Also, bc the serial killer couldn't be captured all police force was driven to that case. The police however, blamed/framed an innocent man for the crime who spent 20 years in jail and only got a retrial to clear his name amidst this pandemic last year.

    • @SY-ok2dq
      @SY-ok2dq 2 года назад +2

      I think the road blocks might have also had to do with an era of authoritarian, military rule, and concerns such as student and pro-democracy demonstrations and popular uprisings against the government, as well as concerns of North Korean spies etc. infiltrating South Korea.
      Curfews were also in place during that decade and prior to that.

A gang like this who had done the very same crimes including kidnapping a girl and her friend, raping and starving the girl and forcing her to help kill her friend. She survived by doing what they told her. I thought it was pure fiction from a dark mind, but I should have known better. Motels in Korea are generally used by people to have sex. Most people live with their family until they get married. They are usually quite cheap and comfortable. Except for very high end luxury vehicles foreign cars are generally not found in Korea. Most upper middle class executives drive high end Korean cars. Chuseok is not really anything to do with Thanksgiving. I think Koreans are taught to explain it as such to make it easier for "foreigners" to understand. People usually eat a large meal with their family.

You had some questions around the Hyundai and why they'd target people with a seemingly not that expensive car but at that time that would have been a very expensive car for people from a poor area. It sounds like these young men were very uneducated and ignorant about the world as a whole, considering Korea's system of chaebols (huge companies led by one family) you would've expected them to target one of such families. The fact that they just went after random people with (to them) fancy cars just goes to show how unaware they were of the world around them.
