Just reiterating what a lot of people have already said, it’s so incredibly generous for you to share your process like this. I use a similar method but have learn so much from this video!
I’m such a fan ... not only of your obvious talent but of your generosity of spirit in sharing your process in-depth with all of us. This was so great to watch! Thx, Joel!
Watching you work , not only did I learn technique but I’ve also taken in a great sense of discipline , a pure sense of service , and the benefits of physical fitness . You are a great man ! And by the time I learn and start fully painting in charcoal I hope to become like you ! Full of Stoic sense of being mixed with discipline and creativity .if I wasn’t in Ethiopia I would have purchased a print !! But I hope that my honest heartfelt words become your currency.
Beautiful art. I recently purchased Nitram aquarelle watercolor and love using it for the darkest darks in my watercolor paintings. Thank you for the demonstrating how to use charcoal.
I bought an old (2018) Colored Pencil magazine recently and the article about you was intriguing. So happy to have found your videos. You are just the inspiration I need. Thanks
Thank you so much for doing these videos. I've been trying to create what I see in my head with paint and unable to accomplish it. However I don't want to waste my hundreds of canvases, so I'm going to try it your way. I love the outcome you get. Just something about your work is so profound and powerful.
JUST found you on RUclips. I have drawn with graphite on paper all my life. Love your technique and your willingness to share it. As I watched several of your videos and saw the fixative layers, I wondered to myself if it would be possible to add acrylic washes....AND THEN YOU DID! I got so excited and ideas that have been running around in my head, for sooo long, just exploded! I can hardly wait to try them with this "new to me" technique! I am 62, but still get excited to learn something new. Your work is awesome...thank you so much for sharing your instruction and your beautiful work. ❤️
Hi Joel, I hope your family and you are having a wonderful Mother's Day celebration. I am primarily self-taught in graphite and charcoal, and I have always begun with the eyes, too! I get a connection with my subject that way. It is a wonderful blessing to watch your technique and see the results of such beautiful God given talent. Thank you for sharing ❤
real art from the heart and love how you use this medium so much fun to do something in this manner life is short and art is long hope to live long enough to try this method on some subject thank you for sharing your gift !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks God, I've been looking for this kind of tutorial and I found this which is very helpful and detailed as well. For me as a beginner, thanks a lot I've learned so many things here🤍
Please keep this content comin please! Love the charcoal works and that you go for bigger pieces and some nice works. Not many good charcoal, pastel, channels out that are like this imo. 👍 🔥
I loved watching you draw this image (though I draw human portraits!) on canvas! I’ve never experimented with using charcoal, acetone on canvas! Thank you for this instructional video.
Stunning. Absolutely stunning. Have you done any research or investigated the long term “archival” results of using the acetone on gessoed canvas and under the finished varnish coats? Just wondering about the various chemicals reacting destructively (or not) over time that is.
After the first and second layer I spray it with both acetone for effect and then Krylon workable fixative to seal the charcoal. On the third layer I don't use acetone, only Krylon workable fixative.
Such a talent brother! I've always enjoyed your work, even in the quick videos, but this really demonstrated your talent! It was like we watched a stick drawing come to life! You keep drawing and I'll keep awing! 😁👍🏼 ~ JJ Predator X
Actually, question for you. My charcoal rubs off alot as I blend. I get more powder sitting on the canvas than is actually worked in. Would you assume this is because I'm using a cheaper canvas?
On this one I didn't use gesso, but on my more recent pieces I have started applying a couple layers of gesso before drawing. I'm loving the additional texture. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing your process, I love your artwork and techniques. I've done this method but only in drawing class using still-life and never considered it a method to use on my own artwork until I saw your stuff. It's wonderful seeing an artist using a unconventional style and being successful with it. I haven't tried it yet myself recently, but I'm beginning to practice more with drawing because doing my own thing I've become rusty getting proportions correct. I'm wondering, what brand fixative do you use? They all change their formulas or cans so much, I don't want to invest in sprays, they are way too expensive. Thanks so much!
I just found your videos and am really enjoying them...thank you! I do have a question...since I am fairly allergic to chemicals could you use something besides acetone? One other question is why do you use the thinner canvas panels instead of 1 1/2"? I know the price would be better but just wondered if you then have to set it in a frame to sell? Thanks so much for the videos!
I'm not sure. I've only used acetone and water and the acetone created a much better effect and it evaporated much quicker which was nice. I use mostly the thicker canvases, but I have a few of the thinner profile ones hanging around the studio that I'm trying to use up as well. Thanks!
Hi! I’ve been wanting to do charcoal/pastel on canvas for a long time… I was wondering how you prep the canvas? May be similar to how some people would mix their own pastel ground?? do you add Pomus? Or is clear gesso good enough? I’m gonna experiment with some of these options but I was just wondering how you do it :-) thank you!
Hey Brother.... its very cool... you are a genius at art... you have done a great job... your Drawing looks pretty well. Really superb and amazing 👏 👌 😍 👍 🙌.... I have Big Question is that After Finished your drawing "HOW DO YOU SAFE IT WHILE SHOW IT FOR SOME AUDIENCE ?..." what i mean is if someone mesmerized at your work can touch it without any second thought and may damage your work by blending it with thier hands... how do you avoid that!?.. Do you apply any type of oil coating over it after you finish your work to make it like Laminated!?.. I hope you understand my question!.. please clarify my doubt!...
This is amazing! Never did I know that charcoal could be done on canvas. I’m curious though- you sprayed acetone on it after the first layer of charcoal. It appears that the additional charcoal layers have covered the effect of the acetone.
Amazing work. You are extremely talented. I don’t know where you live but I’ve visited Utah a couple times and the wildlife you draw reminds me of Utah. God has surly blessed you with great talent. Is this a side job or can you make enough to support your family and lifestyle. I’ve never pursued my art because I always thought you had to die to make any money, lol.
I lay out the reference image in Photoshop on a proportionally sized artboard with the grid lines. I then use my iPad to show the reference while working and I measure the screen and scale it up to the canvas. Sorry if that's a bit confusing. I've been meaning to do a video explaining it in detail.
Interesting technique. Bet you would enjoy working in pastel as it is a similar process, but can be done in color. Quick question, since there's loose charcoal on the surface, does this need to be framed under glass?
Hi, a fascinating process it’s been great and very interesting, can I ask if you put anything on the canvas before you start.? Or do you go straight onto a bear canvas? My charcoal comes off when I tried the technique, many thanks Sandra from UK
The canvases I buy are stretched and pre primed, but I don't do any additional prep to them. Multiple layers is always necessary to build value. Thanks!
I've only ever drawn on paper so I'm wondering do you use a specific type of canvas? Like linen vs cotton. And do you treat them with gesso like you would for painting or are they raw?
I buy canvas that is stretched and pre primed and I used to draw directly on it without any prep work and it was great. I've recently started applying a couple layers of gesso first and I'm loving the additional texture. Thanks!
This one was just stretched and pre primed canvas. But on my more recent projects I've been adding a couple layers of gesso because I like the added texture. Thanks!
I keep watching the process over and over. What charcoal do you use that makes it so dark or is it the help of the workable fixatives that helps with the darkness?
I use various brands of vine charcoal and powder charcoal, but mostly General's. Using the fixatives to layer the charcoal is how I'm able to darken the values. Hope that helps. Thanks!
Sometimes I draw directly on the stretched and pre primed canvas I buy, and other times I'll apply gesso if I want a little more texture. Either way works. Thanks!
Hey Joel, love your work! Could you share if you scan - or photograph your work in order to print? And is this at the end of the creation, so after the final coating? Thanks, wishing you and your family a great holiday season! Regards, Franklin
This one was just stretched and pre primed canvas. But on my more recent projects I've been adding a couple layers of gesso because I like the added texture. Thanks!
Hi Joel. Just adore this process!! Love the acetone effect . After you do the darks you spray it with workable fixative and then ? I might have missed the next part.. ?? Then white charcoal..then?? So appreciate your sharing this like name others said.. so kind as it's your baby!!! Lol. Thanks sooo much.. jsn Spray varnish at the end
Hi Jan. I apply a layer of charcoal then spray with the workable fixative then apply another layer of charcoal and then fixative again. Usually about three layers of charcoal builds it up enough to get the dark shadows really rich. Then I touch up the highlights with white charcoal (though on my most recent piece I used white acrylic paint and loved the result). Finally a spray a matte finish then brush on a varnish for the final coat. Thanks!
@@JoelPilcherArt Tjanks Joel so much.. you are very giving...I do appreciate that!.I will try to play too with it.. Your art is amazing though!! Thanks so much for replying too... good of you.. Take care.. xx
