I can't get the cretacolour charcoal stick from amazong and can't seem to find anywhere else!

Thank you so much for your step by step advice. Just started again after reaching 46 years old. Not drawn since childhood, so I found the guide very helpful.
The electric erasers are a priceless tool to use for graphite, pastels, and charcoal work. I will often create a finer tip by holding it at an angle on a piece of paper while running it. This sharpens the tip which helps create even finer lines for whiskers, hair, and such. I also use various makeup brushes for a variety of techniques and details. I love fine detail work and being creative by resourcing unusual or unique items to help achieve a desired effect. A kneaded eraser is also a must for any artist pursuing drawing, charcoal, or soft pastel painting.

Try Tihoo or Artme ( both the same) electric eraser, I have used the Derwent one before but I find it too hard to use. The Artme types also come with 2.3mm like the mono eraser so you can get really fine details, it works really well with graphite and I think it would work even better with charcoal. I have never worked with charcoal but this video has inspired me to try so thank you!

I use blending stumps the same way with graphite powder, once it's loaded it's perfect for shading and blocking.
Also Carlie Renee uses erasers in very unique ways like cutting them to the shapes she needs, the cutoffs can still be used as well.

I use a tenwin eraser I ordered from aliexpress. Love this one better than the derwent. Two reasons I like this one better, it comes with two different nibs. One big one like the derwent and one small just like the tombow eraser. So you can switch between the two. The other reason, it just lays better in my small hands 😊. And I am to lazy to switch so I bought an extra one 😊. Tihoo is a good alternative as wel. Keep up the good work, really enjoy you're vids and arts and it made me curious to try out charcoal on canvas! I too do love the charcoal dirt on my hands and I also like to smudge it with my fingers 😬. Greetings from the other side of the pond 🇳🇱

you need to try AFmat electric eraser its the only one i found that grips the eraser and you can get it in 2 sizes small round and big round and its rechargable as well and affortable. highly recommended.

I am not sure if you know , but after watching Jono Dry, he was using a battery operated earsers, yah, I know... you got one too, but did you know they come in different sizes? giggle, I was so blown away !! It comes in a smaller size, a 2.3 mm and a 5mm hope this helps hugs from Canada

Hi Brilliant drawing and loved the a great advice thanks for sharing. I love charcoal. I have a question about the cretacolor charcoal stick def want to buy one. Jacksons have one but it it has a differeny number on the stick than one in your link and is much cheaper. Maybe its smaller one? Do you know if its the same thing? Thanks for any help. 😊

Your work is amazing, i like to work with charchole, because it's so versitile and tactile, fur on the onther hand ,is a frightening idea. I want to draw a silverback gorilla, head only, what colour paper? And could i do with charcole on a canvas? Please help me , i need a project , i just need to start ❤

Great helpful video, I also don't like using the indentation tool as you can see the indents from the side in certain light, for the whiskers you could try white charcoal pencils and white charcoal sticks
I used to use white pastels but I found that sometimes they can give the whiskers a bit of a blue tinge, and tended to fade a little bit when I sprayed the piece with fixative.

I don't I just clip it straight to the board, I have tried stretching it with water once but I just can't seem to get it right and it still buckles a bit. I find that just clipping it tightly works fine as long as the backboard you are working on is sturdy

Hi Daniel, I love this video! Do you find that the fixative changes the look of the charcoal painting? Does it darken the white areas? Do you ever just frame with glass cover and not use fixative?
Hi, no I don’t think fixative has an effect on the look of the piece. if you use white pastel for the highlights it does darken that but as I just use the bare paper for the lightest parts the fixative has no effect on it. I always fix the charcoals even if they go behind glass just to add an extra layer of protection to the surface

I have the Afmat electric eraser. The great thing about it is that it's USB rechargeable. If I remember correctly, the Derwent is AA or AAA battery operated? I had one a long time ago but I was sick of replacing the battery, so I got a rechargeable one. Now I don't know if Derwent has upgraded to a rechargeable one, this was many years ago I had it, but I highly recommend the Afmat brand. No difference in quality, but it WAS cheaper and it's so much more convenient to just place it on a charger for a little bit if the battery dies. And let me tell you..... it lasts a while before that happens. It also has two sizes of erasers, they come with a bunch of refills, and are probably the exact same size as the Derwent so you wouldn't have to worry about buying all new eraser nibs if you decide to switch. Anyway, I hope you give it a try one day! I learned a lot about charcoal tools, I haven't tried the sticks, or powders yet, and I really want to. I'm glad I found your videos. I love watching other artists and getting tips on improving my own work!

You can use rechargable AA or AAA batteries on that sharpener.I always choose devices that use AA or AAA, They perform better from any point of view and they also last longer. I hate any device,that I neither can't replace or put the battery I like to use it.
I am working on saving up for the paper you suggested. I am brand new to all of this and I adore your videos. I want to learn more about charcoal and how to manipulate it across the paper. My problem is. Until I get that paper I have a standard sketch pad "Bachmore 9x12 68lb" and I am having the worst time erasing the charcoal for the effect you achieve. And my sister gave me a "Castle arts" bundle of graphite and charcoal.
I guess my question is. Is it the paper causing me issue or the charcoal?
I have watched your technique over and over and it just does not lift like yours does to get the beautiful dimension.
Oh but I do have a mono eraser. But it doesn't work either. Unless I indent the paper first.
Any ideas?

It’s probably a mix of the charcoal and the paper. If you use the harder compressed charcoal it doesn’t erase very easily and if you press too hard on the paper it won’t erase easily either. The paper should be okay for sketching and practicing, I use the heavy duty paper because I sell my work and want it to be on the best quality materials possible.

Can you tell us how you store your work? Because charcoal and big, is for me a problem. Also I have new fixatief, a new brand. Not used it yet.
I usually either roll them up and store them in cardboard tubes or frame them as soon as possible so they are safe in the frame

Can you tell me what the difference is between Conte Pierre Noir and Fusion. Charcoal. I assume Piere Noir aren't charcoal, which might be a shame as thats what I already have.....

Which is better? The tombow or the battery operated eraser ? TIA.
In terms of pulling the charcoal from the surface the battery operated one but I couldn’t create these charcoal drawings without either of these tools, they are both needed for different things.

So where do you get your reference photos from?
I asked the same question about a month ago. you can find links to his references in the comments...the video was a tiger painting with acrylic the background to the painting was blue if that helps. 👍

Do you have many charcoal pet drawings on your patreon?
I don't really have many pet tutorials on my patreon as most of the pet portraits I do are commissions, I do have a plan to do a charcoal video of my dog Charlie for Patreon though so that will be up there next year. The techniques I use for my lion and tiger pieces are exactly the same as the pet portraits though so the skills from all of my videos are transferable :)

Pan pastel application takes longer and it doesn’t remove from the paper as well as charcoal 😁
