  • In todays tutorial, we are demonstrating how to setup a enclosure for an Adult Carpet Python. In particular Morelia Spilota Variegata (Darwin Carpet python or Top End python).
    Australian Carpet Pythons are generally semi-arboreal and need more floor space rather than enclosure height. As a general rule, Adult carpet pythons will grow between 6-8 foot long. We recommend that you use a 120x60x60cm (4'x2'x2') enclosure. Enclosures taller than 120cm (4') tall, are hard to heat and typically not suitable.
    Ensure that and heat lights are covered with mesh cages so that the snake doesn't get burnt if it coils around the globe. We always recommend that any heat source should be regulated by a thermostat.
    Ideal substrates for carpet pythons are as follows:
    * Coarse Pine bark,
    * Eucalyptus Mulch,
    * Recycled paper Kitty Litter,
    * Chipsi,
    * Aspen bedding,
    * Critter Crumble.
    All snakes need a hide at least on the hot side and if you have the space, place a hide on the cool side too.
    When using natural logs and branches, ensure that you thoroughly wash them to remove any mites, ants, spiders and ticks. This can be achieved by treating with boiling water and when dried, spray with MacMite.

      DO NOT LIVE FEED - if the snake decides he isn't hungry he will most likely be eaten by the prey - even if the snake does strike, if he mistrikes he will receive claws and teeth to the eyes, face and mouth. There is no benefits.

      Hi Caitlin. Thanks for the feedback. We appreciate your support. A Pygmy or Childrens python would only need around a 90x45x60cm tall enclosure. I would offer them 60cm tall to encourage them to be more active.

    Awesome video. I just took on an 8 year SW Carpet and im re doing his setup as he didnt have the best organisation going on in his enclosure. Hes got one heat lamp at the top, and hes got a daylight lamp thats sit above the mesh at the top of the enclosure. Will this be enough or would i need anything extra for the heat?

    • @CookiesCritters
      @CookiesCritters  2 года назад +1

      Firstly I love morelia imbricata. If you are not supplying night time heat, it will be depending on the ambient temperatures in the room where the enclosure is. I don’t let my Darwin’s drop below 18C and all other species don’t go below 15C. If your room is warmer than that it should be ok.
      The 2 main issues for not having some night heat is Respiratory infections and slower feeding responses.

    Any tips on sealing a malamine enclosure in order to do a bioactive setup? So far i have siliconed all the joins with aquarium safe silicone and am conteplating doing several coats of polyeurethane varnish to assist in making it moisture repellant for as long as possible but maybe someone has a better option

    • @CookiesCritters
      @CookiesCritters  2 года назад +1

      Hi mate. Sorry for the late reply. The trick with melamine is surface preparation. If you don’t sand the melamine, noting will stick to it.
      We used pond sealer paint with great success. It comes in sandstone, blue and black. There is also a clear sealer too.

      @@polnochkoshmary happy to help mate. Make sure u use rough sand paper and remove all the dust first. 2 coats should be sufficient but check the manufacturers specifications. After, make sure you let the enclosure thoroughly dry so that there are no fumes.

    • @CookiesCritters
      @CookiesCritters  2 года назад +1

      4x2x2’ is the bare minimum for an adult rough scaled python. If you have the space I would recommend a 4x2x4’ (120x60x120cm) enclosure.

    Ik this vid was made a few months ago, but I think I'm going to buy a carpet python and I have a more arboreal enclosure, its 4'x3'x1'-6" of course it has enough floor space and everything but would this work? I plan to have the enclosure very full of enrichment and everything, of course, but I want to know if the height would be used with this snake being only semi-arboreal?

    • @CookiesCritters
      @CookiesCritters  2 года назад +1

      Hi mate. that enclosure will be fine for an adult carpet python. Carpet pythons can use the height too. I’ve built 4x4x2’ enclosures for carpets. The biggest consideration is the heating. You need a reason for the snake to use the height. This can be achieved by providing basking lights (with mesh cages) at the top of the enclosure.
