In 2015, aged 47 an English businessman gave up everything and travelled Asia to find true happiness. Now a Buddhist Monk, living a simple life in Thailand, India and Sri Lanka, he shares the continuing story.

Phra Dan (Bhante Dhammarakkhita, Bhikkhu) is a Theravada Buddhist Monk who lived in India from 2020, Thailand and now Sri Lanka. Born in Sussex, England in 1967. Educated by French Catholic Monks. A successful businessman in Estate Agency and Financial Services during the 1980's and 90's. Married, now divorced with 3 adult sons. 2000 marked change and travel including South Africa returning to the UK in 2003 to continue different work and business activities until 2012. Gradually materialistic values turned to renunciation, simplicity and meditation, living nomadically in an old Ford Transit van full time for 3 years. Van life and meditation led to Buddhism and a Thai Forest Tradition, Theravada Buddhist Monastery in the UK. During 2015 travelling the Buddhist Holy Sites of India, deep faith reinforced desire for Ordination. In 2020 after 5 years of intensive meditation practice between Thai Forest Monasteries in Thailand and England he was Ordained in India where he lived for 3 years until returning to Thailand in 2023 and now Sri Lanka.

On the question posed about their discovery of Buddhism through helping others that are suffering in war. My soft spot is animals. I hate to see any animal suffer. In fact I often overdrafted my bank account in donating, I dont say that to show off but to say that sometimes the suffering of others can be so overwhelming that it makes me feel isolated. Hopeless. So I have to be careful around animal causes because I get swept up. Some people seem to be more sensitive than others so it may be something to look at. Also it could be others in the group feel so helpless against the amount of suffering that it is not a subject they can add to. But here is the takeaway for you. Your miracle has already happened. You found a path that leads to your very own truth. So many want that but never seem to find the door. Be glad, be happy my friend.

I did something in samadhi. :) but there is a mischievous green colour being very powerful. Fangs from lower jaw. It is a masculine being. He likes to destroy everything in his path. He escaped the prison from heavens. 😆

It’s interesting that some people think the monk’s way of life is an unsustainable economy when mainstream economics create so much waste and exploitation and Buddhists have sustained the simple monastic way of life for centuries.

Thank you Bhante, I had a bit of a revelation. Many years ago I had this teacher that never told me what to do. I asked him why dont you just tell me what to do I wont make so many mistakes. What he said has served me to this day. He said If I tell you what to do Im talking at you. Once I do that all my ideas and thoughts are projected onto you. So Im no longer talking to you Im talking AT YOU.. However if I share my experience, my hope with you you might one day take those thoughts your own. That is your path not mine and why it has to come from within. However I realized that if I argue I am actually projecting my thoughts onto that person. So it seems both produce the same result.I think we need to just share not tell.

The person who mentioned speaking to Buddhists, I'm assuming they mean in FB groups or Buddhism websites with public groups, yes, if you behave like a human I there you are told that this is not a help group or, they will shame you for not behaving like a Monastic. It's so intellectual and cold that an AI program really would appear no different. I was,silenced too and associate with not one Buddhist yet we keep hearing about finding the right company as it almost everything according to the Buddha, Kalyanamitta ... it's curious because we are to do the work ourselves but still connect with others but it doesn't actually work today. The four fold assembly works in a Monastery or when Monastics are included. Its no wonder American Buddhism was created ... big issue so I am a sole practitioner and listen to you and other Forest Tradition Monastics. 🙏 Also, Ajahn Achalo recently said over 93% of Forest Monastics use money now so you are rare and as always I thank you for your channel your teachings and patience, your Sila and Dana, your commitment and humbleness Bhante many blessings 🙏🙏🙏
Yes, was refering to online groups. There are areas where you can introduce yourself in some of these groups, often people will tell their life story. All I've done is mention my path to get here and I've been deleted and warned never to mention a war. So maybe those are just not the right spaces for me. I feel similarly to you, I really appreciate Bhante here and there are many other sources to learn as an individual too. I think that is the right path for me at this time.
Me too Im kinda of a loner. Im still learning and really dont read much and I just listen to Bhante. For myself there is not much point in moving around and Ive been around long enough to know Bhante is the real deal. So need need to search, for myself I mean. In the western religions it seems more about bearing fruit. It says if you do these things you will bear fruit richly. That fruit can mean anything but they say your practise should show fruit.When I first started learning I was told your practise will take care of you but you now need to go out and be of help to others. It appears ( Im really not sure yet) but it appears as if Buddhism is much more self focused? Take care of yourself first? Anyway the similarities of religions give me faith that these steps are divinely inspired.

I'm a lone practitioner, have been through some communities and groups and got dissatisfied. Now I only rely on the discourses as my teacher, and the bhikkhus I watch on youtube as my spiritual friends. The Buddha is my only teacher. There's a discourse that said if you cannot find anyone equal or better then just wander alone like a rhino.

I know that isn't my intention but I understand the need to remove a comment that can spark debate. I will just continue my work in helping and not mention who I'm helping. ❤🙏🏻

Good day to you, Bhante. I was wondering if in all the time you have spent living the monastic life and even the years before then, living in your Transit, if you have ever had to use discipline to keep yourself on the path? Have there ever been times when you felt that you had taken this road as far as you could and that you were contemplated putting aside meditation or even monasticism and if so how much "will" did it take to stay the course as it were?

A recovered alcoholic is addicted to not consuming alcohol and a recovering alcoholic is learning to be addicted to neither. Apologising for "hurting" their false pride isn't helpful perhaps 🙏 Addiction and war , as all things, exist and always will as the tools that help us navigate from ego to self to all. Thanks. I was wondering, when you go seeking alms in the morning (Pindepata?) do you actually approach people's doors or stay on the main road/path? And do you ever get any hostile reactions from the public? Or do you have a section of people that contribute, while those less interested simply choose not to contribute and stay at home? Thanks.

I ask this because I want to start sleeping on the floor; however, I do not know what to use, perhaps a rolling mattress might suffice? False pride is a good subject. One of the 7 deadlys.Catholic . I have suffered from false pride. False pride deals more with lying. For example, I own Microsoft. It is a lie but Im building a persona that people admire. But it is not true and that is actually along the lines of false pride. Trying to be something Im not. But more and more Im starting to see myself as ignorant. A lack of skill. Sometimes I see it and sometimes I dont until I look in the rearview mirror. Than Im like what was I thinking? What a dummy!
