A Tibetan Buddhist here. My guru used me tell me that if you open a book without looking at the cover and start reading, we will not be able to tell whether you are reading about Buddhism or Hinduism. But most Hindus in India use this similarity not to study Buddhism by justifying that they are the same. One should study Buddhist thought and practice and Vice versa without converting into a “Buddhist” or “Hindu” because every tradition has a unique way of explaining things and it helps us to realize the ultimate. 🙏🙏
I think there's a vast difference in how their followers perceive things. I feel Buddhism is more pure and refined and free from dogma and superstition which a lot of Hindus follow.
You are thinking of Theravada Buddhism or early Buddhism. Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism is full of gods or deities. Gods in Buddhism do no create the universe though. They impact our lives as guides but our karna mainly determines our destiny.

@@joea6234Buddha like Jesus? Really. Please read and talk to someone with some experience. Jesus was a person who claimed to be the Prophetic King's of the Jewish nation. The entire Old Testament is adopted from the Torah. The Jews however rejected his claim and crucified him. Later Jesus's cult escaped Judea and went to Byzantium where they compiled their book. Its no surprise that the first Bible is in Greek. Also the New Testament is a compilation of the teachings of the apostles written down much after Jesus's death. Finally the modern Christian sects are heavily reliant upon the directive agreed upon by the Creed of Nicea. Buddhism on the other hand is the exposition of a non-vedic Indian faith tradition. Sakhyamuni Gautama is the foremost individual in this tradition.
In Buddhism we don't believe in creator or destroyer or GOD...We believe in nature of the universe...! Buddhism is not a religion like any other...its a path towards a good peaceful life....!❤
Funny how Buddha denied the existence of God & himself became a Godman, Bhagwan Buddha. While Buddhists use the Mantra "Om mani Padme hum", they forget that "Om" is a Vedic Mantra sound & Om is the Brahman that you do not believe in.

Buddhism explains concept of existence correctly. According to the Buddhism, Impermanence, Sorrowfulness and no eternal soul/self are 3 marks of existence. Impermanence is a universal truth. "Hinduism" is a western label as it was applied by people entering the Indian sub-continent via the INDUS Valley to denote a philosophy practiced by those residing in the Indus region, whereas the ethos was prevalent all over the sub-continent and in other parts of the world in different shapes and forms. A more accepted name is "Sanatana Dharma" meaning "eternal philosophy" and this name feels more apt because it transcends time, space/geography. A good read is "PERENNIAL PHILOSOPHY" by the British philosopher Aldous Huxley which finds a common thread among all of the religions of the world. The concept of the divine in Sanatana philosophy is like the number 0 manifesting itself as infinite numbers (as positive & negative, creation & destruction - so called "good" and "evil", as things/attributes, and their opposites - matter, anti-matter etc.), and remaining in an unperturbed, non-judgmental equilibrium state (moksha). Like Einstein's equation E = M (divine energy manifesting as all that is - "Yahweh" in Aramaic/Hebrew means "I am" or "I am that which is", and in Sanskrit, "Tat Tvam Asi" means "Thou Art That"). Baruch Spinoza's interpretation of Judaism is similar to Sanatana philosophy. An underlying homogeneous consciousness/energy field manifested as the heterogeneous/diverse cosmos that is observed. making it simultaneously monotheistic and polytheistic. Zero is both NOTHING & EVERYTHING simultaneously, as it encompasses infinity. It's not an absolute/true void or nothingness. By manifesting as infinity it ceases to be a true void and hence acquires the dual properties (manifest (as numbers), unmanifest (as zero) etc.). Like in the poem IF by Rudyard Kipling, the divine transcends the notions of good, evil, pleasure, pain, triumph, disaster, by manifesting as all outcomes and experiencing all of these - experiencing the full gamut of expressions associated with existence. It is both the hunter and the hunted, both the victor and the vanquished, and therefore is able to remain unperturbed, in a non-judgmental state. Both sides of the equation (E = M) are equally valid - one is not lesser than the other and not to be escaped, i.e. everyone and everything is enlightened along all points in time. There is no enlightenment to chase in some future state and there's no permanent escape into some oblivious nothingness (there's always re-emergence). The grass always appears to be greener on the other side. Existing in the Relative, we think of returning to the Absolute, while the Absolute continuously manifests as the Relative. Carl Sagan said "we are a way for the cosmos to know itself".
@@adityanastik8098No, it is not! It is the greatest mess up in Indian history! And of course when the country was reeling in poverty and slavery for several centuries, those who were in an advantageous position in terms of intellectuality, wealth, and power used it to their advantage. Add to it the invaders, and politicians till date. At the time when people were confused bout their karma and role in the society. Shri krishn created the Varna system in which occupations are divided into four groups Brahmans: those who live by begging for food for their stomachs. They are responsible for teaching and maintaining sacred knowledge. They play a crucial role in performing religious rituals, preserving and transmitting knowledge, and providing spiritual guidance to society. Kshatriya: Kshatriyas are the warrior or military caste in Hindu society, traditionally responsible for protecting the country and its people. Their role historically included governing and administering the state, defending the kingdom, and upholding justice and righteousness. Vaishya: In the Varna system, Vaishyas are the third varna, traditionally associated with commerce, agriculture, and trade. Their role includes business, agriculture, and trading goods. They are considered the merchant and artisan class, responsible for economic activities in society. Shudras: In the Varna system, Shudras are the fourth varna, traditionally associated with service and labor. Their role is to serve the other three varnas-Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas-by performing various tasks necessary for society, such as manual labor, agriculture, and other service-oriented work. This is the divine caste system. Krishna states in the Bhagavad-gita that these divisions are based on one's qualities and activities. He does not state that they are based on birth, as in the demoniac caste System. In the divine caste system everyone is encouraged, trained, and facilitated, in whatever occupation best suits their nature. In this way there is full employment in the society. There are no frustrated, unemployed people. Everyone is employed in an occupation which is according to their nature. Thus everyone is encouraged and enthused. The modern day demoniac caste system, which is still going on today in India, is based on one's birth. One is forced into a certain caste by his birth. This exploitative system was introduced by the unqualified sons of those who were actually qualified brahmanas to forcefully make themselves the leaders of the society.A real brahmana is someone who knows the Absolute Truth and freely distributes it to everyone to elevate them also to the position of brahmana. Please clear your confusion about this and in Hinduism we are taught that every person and animals and whoever have lives are one by the same source and energy. That's why we sanatanis are vegetarian amd what about plants? We are taught that if we have to cut a tree we have to ask for forgiveness from that tree and promise that ' I will plant 5 of your same kind' and not to cause harm to any anyone because we are part of this nature and it will make us pay for it.

There are worthless people who follow all kinds of religions. That should not discourage you from practicing Buddhism. As the Buddha said: no ce labhetha nipakaṃ sahāyaṃ, saddhiṃ caraṃ sādhuvihāridhīraṃ. rājāva raṭṭhaṃ vijitaṃ pahāya, eko care mātaṅgaraññeva nāgo. If for company you cannot find a wise and prudent friend who leads a good life, then, like a king who leaves behind a conquered kingdom, or like a lone elephant in the elephant forest, you should go your way alone.

Conscious controlling Matter is life. Conditioned conscious is creaturs. Hinduism is like Science and scientific principles of Vedism Converted into Arts Faculty. Dimensions of Time and Space as discussed in Indian Vedism were converted into persons called Devtas in Hinduism. Brahma Vishnu Mahesh in Vedism are dimensions of Time and Space, relating to Creativity of Mind Vishnu is energy of Universe holding matter together. Mahesh is energy causing electronic motion of electrons resulting in chemical reactions that break down molecules into smaller one's and Brahma Force rejoins these molecules to re create new molecules. Conscious in Vedism is omnipresent. The President of each function of Universe managing these reactions are personal devtas of that dimensions and are like Factory managers In Vedism the Force is worshipped In Hinduism the Managers controlling these forces are worshipped, that's major difference. Buddhism has several core principles, and they are not seen in Hinduism or any other religion : 1. Trilakkana - Three marks of existence 2. Catur ariya sacca - four noble truths 3. Panca-upadana-kanda - five aggregates 4. Paticcasamuppada - dependent origination They are many others, and it is completely different from the teachings in Vedas.
Buddhism may have many core principles but they lag in the creator concept. But hinduism is not a religion because in every part of india there are different types of devotion. Hinduism is divided into three types dwaitha, adwaitha, and also atheists but they respect traditions. Dwaitha means who worship multiple gods, adwaitha means who believes in one superior god. So unlike other religions hinduism give access to pray to different gods because here one god is in different forms
sad that we have to specially mention "no hate towards any other religion" since people automatically jump to the conclusion that we are hindu supremacist
There is literally hatred written all over for Lower caste in popular Hindu Religious books like Valmiki Ramayana and Purana, there is also hatred for Kshatriyas in Vishnupurana where Parshuram eradicate Kshatriyas 21 times, classic example of Racist hatred, Hindu dhram is kinder to only Brahamin caste

I too am not a Buddhist but after learning about Buddhism, I feel I want to follow its teachings but I do not want to label myself as a Buddhist. When people start labelling themselves as Buddhist, Christians, Hindu or Muslims, that is when they start comparing their beliefs and start arguing which lead to animosity. If everybody practice their respective beliefs faithfully and not put a label on themselves, then when they meet each other, they will find that everybody is kind, compassionate and happy. Everybody is the same. No need to quarrel.
My heartiest salutations to respected Buddhist monk. Salvation of the self and welfare of human beings are the key purpose of the Hindu religion as depicted in our Vedas and Upanishads. This idea has been invoked in daily life by Ramkrishna Mission established by Swami Vivekananda where the motto is Atmano Moksharthan Jagat Hitaya Cha.
There are far more similarities between Buddhism and Hinduism than differences. Both are based on the “Dharmic” tradition and culture of India. So the similarities are “Chit” and “ananda” or consciousness and bliss but it differs in the interpretation of “sat” or “satya” or truth. In Buddhism “sat” is made of Anatta Anicca and Dukha or non-self, impermanence and suffering.
In Hinduism, all the gods are cursed by hindus. Hinduism does not respect God/gods. Thanks to Lord Buddha, Vishnu (Sariputta) was able to destroy the curses and so all the gods are now Buddhist. In Buddhism we love and nurture ALL beings including the gods.
Actually every bit of what this Budhhist monk is saying about his religion matches the religion / darsana being practiced by Hindus, Vedanta ! There is absolutely no difference!
mukti is a way of life first you question the "i" then look to the bhartiye darshan then do what is right which is dharma you don't just reject blindly
Hinduism is also way of life. And wasn't Buddha hindu king and then he got enlighten. He is the 10th avatar of lord vishnu as per Hindu believes. So I don't see much difference. Hinduism also talks about Maya and break the illusion n working towards enlightenment. I think Buddhism doesn't believe in atma which may be the difference. I m not sure any Buddhist can confirm .
More nuanced Hindus are also expected to do the same. Advaita philosophy asks one to attain truth Knowledge(Gnyana), through Discipline(Yoga), Meditation(Dhyana). Through the truth we will comprehend the ultimate reality AKA Brahman.
It is surprising to know certain things which were unknown about Biddhisam atleast for me. Really Simple, elaborative and clear description about Buddisam. 🙏

I am born Buddhist... a Bhutanese Buddhist... And here, although outsiders mark it as a religion, we consider it a way of life, a part of our culture and heritage.. Buddhism is deeply rooted in our Nation's past and present.. starting from how the leadership hierarchy is set-up till how each person is raised to think like a Buddhist. (We have a political leader elected by the people, a religious leader elected by the monk and religious body, and a monarchy, these three bodies are the real-life, tangable Triple Gem (Kencho-Sum). My brothers who are Bhutanese Hindus and Bhutanese Christans are also Buddhist by heart, with the way they were raised and the values they were taught as a Bhutanese. Everything we do follows the values and rules of Buddhism and we deeply love and respect our visionary leaders. I think the difference he speaks of is the motivation being a CORE teaching in Buddhism that is incorporated into EVERY practice, Sadhana, or yoga that we do. It’s not to say that Hinduism isn’t a compassionate path - we all know it is. In buddhism however, the distinction is that it is a well known view that there is no true “practice” on the Buddhist path without first establishing the motivation of whatever act, or prayer also benefitting all sentient beings. It’s a subtle difference, but it trains the mind to move beyond self-centered liberations and to completely lose one’s “self” in the liberation of others until the self is no more and compassionate/enlightened service is all that is left. This would explain why there are no enlightened persons, only enlightened activity. Because an enlightened being is just a vessel for enlightened activity, which ultimately aims to serve the whole. This is how I understand it to be based on my learnings as a practitioner.
Sanatan Dharm didn't have cast system but rather it has varn syatem which is according to our profession. Buddha studied Sankhya Philosophy from Kapila Muni, one of Ancient Indian Schools of philosophy which is basically Upanishad's teaching of Sanatan philosophy. Vajrayana came much later when it got heavily influenced by Tantric philosophy of Sanatan philosophy & idol worship which is good in some sense. Initially I used to be against Idol worship, but later understood why it is important, Upnishad philosophy which talks about the oneness of God - the dance of a common vibrating energy among all animate & inanimate being while Vedantic philosophy stresses Idols as personification of Nature forces. It is the same part of one thing, while not everybody could easily understand Upnishad philosophy which is highly philosophical & complex, if common people will not understand the philosophy behind it their mind will become rigid that's why personification of Nature forces becomes necessary. Rituals, some bad & some good comes & go according to the local culture & time because Santana philosophy doesn't destroy the local culture & sentiments of people it accommodates them and reforms it with slow ingress of Upnishad philosophy.
Thank you for this explanation. The whole time while he was talking, I (a Hindu) was thinking to myself, "All of this sounds so familiar. It doesn't sound like a different belief system at all."

Many centuries ago the great scholar Swami Vidyaranya wrote a book called Sarva Darshana Sangraha about the various spiritual philosophies of Bharat, there was no "ism" back then. Both Buddhism and Jainism were considered among the various Indic spiritual paths. Hinduism is largely the indigenous culture of Bharat and at one point that included to a big degree Buddha Dhamma as well.

I'm not religious, but I draw a lot of lessons from Buddhism in living my life (especially when it comes to the bad times). The way I see it, without the doctrine of karma or rebirth/reincarnation, Buddhism is a wonderful secular philosophy that deals with the problems of here and now. With the doctrine of karma and or faith in reincarnation ie: the parts of Buddhism that can't be seen, felt and experienced here and now, it becomes a religion. Thanks for the great video
Reincarnation, I believe, was developed as a counter to Heaven You see many people converting to Islam or Christianity because they are promised a wonderful life of ease & comfort in heaven for eternity! Imagine that the God who created ALL of us, all of this wonderful universe, cares only about religion! Incredible isn't it? These Gods only care about themselves, they don't care about us - all they want to know is do you believe in them & pray only to them? That's it! That is a Putin! A Dictator! Dictators only care about themselves - all they care about is whether you believe & support them, be loyal only to them? If you do, you get the good life! If you don't, you might get tortured, raped or even killed! And we see that these are their Gods! Putin is their God! Fools think all they have to do is believe, sing his praises, be loyal to him and him only and this Putin God will nicely reward them with eternal pleasures of the flesh! Heaven is Fools Gold! And that is the counter to such foolishness! Reincarnation says there is only One World! This one! Thinking if we kiss this butt or that, we will be rewarded with eternal pleasures of the flesh is crazy! It won't work! These people who run after Heaven will end up as Dogs or other lower life forms, like Trees As Dogs they will get the good life - free food, shelter, protection and care - no work, no worries! Lay about all day, every day! Heaven! They will get their Heaven but at what price?

Yes and after hearing the discussion I felt that we have already heard these concepts in Ranveers podcast with different guests , like maya (illusion) , god is within ourselves , manifestation of diety . Soumya deity and fierce diety etc , how is this different from what is already mentioned in the ancient texts of Sanatana dharma?
Whole buddha story is marvelous, he lived like commoner, teached his sermons in layman language pali, even ate meat, his noble truths and eightfold path didnt involve any animal sacrifice or vedic priest. Easily greatest story ever told. Common Indians still are influenced by Light of Asia.
I keep forgetting how utterly unique Buddhism is and i think the only reason it's never caught on elsewhere is because it requires a lot of selfless introspective effort. That's a big sacrifice for people. I truly feel Buddhism would have been much healthier for the world than any other 'religion'... or way of life.
Mahayana Buddhism is based on Advaita Vedanta philosophy of Hinduism. While Mahayana Buddhism teachings center on the idea of the bodhisattva, an enlightened being who seeks to help others attain enlightenment. Advaita Vedanta, on the other hand, emphasizes the non-dual nature of reality, the goal of Advaita Vedanta is to realize one's identity with Brahman through a process of self-inquiry and meditation. I loved the example he gave about a dog dying in the movie. I have always known growing up that Buddhism is about the suffering in the world- how to end it. We used to study how Gautam Buddha left his kingdom in search of solution to suffering and how he found it. But I had never actually understood what the solution was. Now the concept he said was not news to me. We have heard the same concept in many different versions. That begs the question, is that really the solution? If we talk about the final truth, all of us and everyone we know are going to die, humanity is going to end, Solar system will collapse someday and even the Milky Way galaxy will just turn to dust. So what’s the meaning in life, in everything we do, what does anything matter? I kind of feel like Hinduism tries to answer that question, and there’s no one or a correct answer but it kinda tries to give meaning to our lives in the small things, stories and rituals we do. It’s not even a it, it’s us humans we made both Hinduism and Buddhism. So in a way both the religions are people trying to end our own suffering. 🤷♂️ idk

And of course when the country was reeling in poverty and slavery for several centuries, those who were in an advantageous position in terms of intellectuality, wealth, and power used it to their advantage. Add to it the invaders, and politicians till date.
At the time when people were confused bout their karma and role in the society. Shri krishn created the Varna system in which occupations are divided into four groups
Brahmans: those who live by begging for food for their stomachs.

When you're in Bhutan, Buddhism will rarely feel like a religion, but a way of life in Bhutan. Everything we do follows the values and rules of Buddhism and we deeply love and respect our visionary leaders. Hinduism not only talks about peace on earth but also in space and the galaxy. It goes way beyond. Prithvi Shaanti Antariksha Shaanti. How can you forget the shaanti path ?
What about Caste System
@@vinnysing1324meditation was before Buddha's era

Nothing is permanent everyone will die someday so before that day comes earn goodness and positivity in your self .. LONG live HH DALAI LAMA
Vow , very well explained !
Thank you for this explanation. The whole time while he was talking, I (a Hindu) was thinking to myself, "All of this sounds so familiar. It doesn't sound like a different belief system at all."

Both Buddhism and Jainism were considered among the various Indic spiritual paths. These developed from the eastern natives.

Reincarnation, I believe, was developed as a counter to Heaven
You see many people converting to Islam or Christianity because they are promised a wonderful life of ease & comfort in heaven for eternity!
These people who run after Heaven will end up as Dogs or other lower life forms, like Trees
As Dogs they will get the good life - free food, shelter, protection and care - no work, no worries! Lay about all day, every day! Heaven!
They will get their Heaven but at what price?

Mahayana Buddhism is based on Advaita Vedanta philosophy of Hinduism. While Mahayana Buddhism teachings center on the idea of the bodhisattva, an enlightened being who seeks to help others attain enlightenment. Advaita Vedanta, on the other hand, emphasizes the non-dual nature of reality, the goal of Advaita Vedanta is to realize one's identity with Brahman through a process of self-inquiry and meditation.
I am a Vipassana Meditation student, and have also learnt the teaching of Lord Buddha through excerpts of the Tipitaka. Based on what I am able to deduce the observation I have mentioned.
Upanishads also mostly emphasize on Enlightenment, "तत त्वम असि। ", "अप दीपो भव। " and "अहं ब्रह्मासमी। " Convey the same message.
Its vice versa. Advaita has adopted from Buddhism.

🤷♂️ idk
" SARVE BHAVANTU SUKHIN SARVE SANTU NIRAMAYA, SARVE BHADRANI PASHANTU, MAA Kashchid DUKH BHAG BHAVET" It is one of the numerous universal prayers of Hindus.
The Hindu Gods are given attributes and when one keeps faith in that Deity , those attributes are internalized and plays powerfully through the subconscious . Both Buddhism and Hinduism are mind sciences
Dharmic religions are beautiful.
Namaste 🕉🙏🕉🙏::Buddhism the Buddha Dharma also known as Dharmavinaya with roots in Sanatan Dharma the oldest and eternal is an Indian religion or philosophical tradition based on a series of original teachings that are attributed to Gautama Buddha (born Siddhārtha Gautama in the 5th century (BCE meaning Before Common Era), Originating in ancient India as a movement professing śramaṇa , Lord Gautama Siddhartha Buddha a indian prince from Kashtriya Hindu clan,,🕉🙏🕉🙏🕉🙏.
if somebody asks me about the similarity of HINDUISIM and BUDDHISM i'll say we both belong dharma or dhamma which dutiy we are not religious we are dharmic
Unlike the concept of religion, dharma does not relate to a divine revelation or faith, it concerns itself with the questions of human life and the reality possessing it. The concept of transcendence is quite central to the understanding of dharma as opposed to the understanding of religion

I've tried to understand Buddhism via Thich Nhat Hanh, but still left me with unanswered questions. It wasn't until I found Swami Sarvapriyananda who helped me understand the true nature of Consciousness via Advaita Vedanta & logic. I am Vedantist 🙏🙏🙏
Tibattian formats are of Tantra. Even the Tibetan saint who learned it from a tantrik saint from today's Bihar and established it in Tibbet is mentioned in Tibbet history. Its a combination of old Indinigious religion and Tantra, we have similar formats in North east , uttrakhand, Nepal, Bhutan and Himanchal.
That's why yours Buddhism sect is not an original but corrupted.

beautiful wisdom!
Such an articulate monk. Every sentence was full of clarity and wisdom.
Thanks to you both. It would be great if you can cover frameworks such as The Dependant Origination, the Three Marks of Existence, and The Four Noble Truths. The real crux of Buddha's teaching comes out then. Appreciate if you can try some interviews on these lines.
In terms of practice, it is Satipatthana Sutta that systematically captures all these aspects.
The beauty of Buddha's teaching is that it doesn't require the need for an agent/self. It's just those conditioned, selfless phenomenon raising and falling all the time. Essentially that's the nature of reality.
BeerBiceps brother - really appreciate your efforts in bringing out several disciplines under spirituality. Wish you all the best.
I am a Hindu and I always had a Buddha statue with me along with Krishna and Ganesha.
Great .. you should also keep a statue of Adi shankara too..
Buddhism literally says not to idol worship-
@@swagsuga2081 I have been to 10-15 Buddhist monastery and bihar, I haven't seen any single without Buddha idol and people prayed infront of the idol just like Hindus do infront of God.
I don't know where is your reference and what kinda buddhism you are referring to.
@@swagsuga2081 dear brother you known what, despite of being the birth place of Siddharth Gautam , Buddhism could not grown in Bharat coz it's only limited to one darshan called SAMKHYA which is only one among the six darshan ..and also it opposed ved upashana like agnihotra , yagna, yajana etc. That's why it went to the catagory of Nastik vad like it's preceding Jainism and charbak catagory..
But if you want to know what is sanatan Hinduism in real essence, it's only and only ADVAITA starting from lord Narayana or you may say Sadashiv, propagated by Sri Adi Shankaracharya..
Trust me bro, I've spent 3 years to understand the real scriptures which is called prasthanatraya consisting of UPANISHADS, different types of Gitas ( starting from Iswara gita, Shiv gita, yam gita, sri Ram gita, Ashtavakra gita, Avdhoot gita to bhagwat gita and Ribhu gita) and
Finally the BRAHMASUTRA..
Believe me brother,You will found Buddhism sounds great but not even correct upto mark in front of our vaidik sanatan dharm..
@@ranabanik1354Dear brother, many of Hindus think that Buddhism is a part of Hinduism. I don’t know but everything he said is applied to Hinduism as well. In my opinion there is no difference between these two religions. As buddhism is branch of Hinduism may be that’s why.
Exactly what I was thinking, this is exactly ditto what Sanatan Dharm is about, these were rather the similarities than differences.
May be hinduism is a brach of buddhism. Shankracharay and ramanajunacharay spread hinduism after buddhism was at its peak.
@@zarnavanrajsinhchavda6983 Then why are tanatanis so violent and drenched in their egos unlike Buddhists who are peaceful and free from ego.
No, their is a big difference between these two . Buddhism don't belived in creator or God but their are slightly some similarities which are copied or stolen by hinduism.

To be fair, if you consider Buddha as an avatar of Maha Vishnu, it's logical that the core teaching are the same.
