My dying area is about the size of the area you’re using here. I have an old metal cookie sheet (my wife throwing out) with a piece of packing paper taped to it. Thanks for all your help l am new to leather work and retired and fining this enjoyable. Don't text much but wanted to let you know l really find you helpful Thanks again
Hey Chuck, love your “Leather Element” series. I first started working with leather about 1956, while I was in the Boy Scouts. It has been one of my favorite hobbies ever since. I still learn every time I watch you. Great Job. I want to be in the running for the leather. Thank you so much. Chuck Arkon
Thanks Mister you are such a good teacher! ill go with your light brown feibings pro dye, airbrush technique like every question i had just got an answer in this very explanatory video, new follower here!
I started watching these videos because I wanted to get into leatherwork, and I’ve finally bought me a veg tan side to get me started. Thanks for the help Chuck!
I'm about to do my first dye project - a keepsake box for my grandson. Your video was very helpful - thank you- I've been putting off this project because I have no idea what I'm doing. Yet :-D
Hi Chuck, I just started my leather crafting and have found you here. Your tips and tricks are awesome thank you for your help in like beginners like me.
Hey Chuck! Yes your videos are very helpful! I used your knife sheath video set to make my first sheath, and made 50 bucks, and gained a satisfied customer! It was the first leather piece I sold!
I just ordered my tools and a piece of buffalo leather because I love the feel. I know that these videos don't talk about the buffalo... but that's okay. I am learning so many tips and tricks from Chuck. I have watched his videos many times before I started investing in this craft. It would be nice if he has some advice about working with the Buffalo... it's much softer and probably not as easy to see the stitch holes? Thanks Chuck for giving us these videos.
I am new to creating with leather. Your videos have been very helpful and educational. Look forward to seeing more videos to watch and learn from. Thank you
So much energy and enthusiasm! What is the harm of getting dye on skin? I never have my gloves on hand when I need them so I often end up getting a bit dyed myself, is that particularly bad?
Hi Mark, There's no harm in it - your skin will absorb dye very easily so it just saves having to try and scrub dye off your hands by wearing gloves. 👍
Chuck, I really have learned a lot from your videos, I happened to be staining a project this morning while watching this! The steps are clear and easy to understand. Thank you for sharing this with other leather enthusiasts!
Thanks so much for this video. I’m a long haul trucker so my ‘shop’ is literally in the cab of my truck. I always seem to get a splotchy finish with my dye but I tried dip dyeing with the Fiebings pro and it’s perfect. Fast, no big mess and consistent. I just got an order for a dozen pouches and this process was so fun I made another 6 just for kicks and giggles! Thanks for teaching this old dog a new trick.
Chuck you have been one of my biggest inspirations to working with leather. I'm doing projects I never thought I had the abilities to do before. Thanks solely to your informative videos on pattern creation and all of leather element videos. Thank you so much for giving me the guidance and information I needed to take my projects to the next level.
You are soooooooo good! I am getting into leabthercrafting because of you! Your energy and passion is contagious. I am learning like crazy because of you. THANK YOU!!!
I love all your videos. I learn so much even the things I am not really ready to even try to do yet. I save all your videos so I am able to watch once.. then again whenever I want to watch them again.. thank you.
Helpful video! I'd love to see a video demonstrating the use of dyes to change the color of leather that's already been dyed. This could a discussion of the drawbacks and problems with doing this as well as how to make a color change successful. What preparation must be done to the leather beforehand? What happens when changing from a dark color like black to a color like green or red?
Chuck’s videos are clear and easy to understand. I’ve put some of his tips into practice. You guys at Weaver are much appreciated. Have a nice weekend Andrew in Omaha, NE 🙂
Chuck, you are making my life so much easier!!! Thank you for these videos!! I haven't found any other leather company supplying such great tutorials/how to's. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
Hi there, I just now happened to come across this video, I learned a good bit about the different affects of dyeing leather & I've enjoyed watching everyone of these that I can muster up, just wanting to thank you for your awesome helpful information, you just make my day, thank you also for answering my questions, I really appreciate this a whole bunch..
I'm starting leathercraft. I got a "practice side" of leather, a pattern from Corter Leather, and I sat down to cut and dye it today. I'm probably doing everything out of order but I'm figuring it out. I think I'll come here for upgrades to tools etc once I get going. :) I'm so excited to learn how to dye this leather properly so it's not... so ... flat. XD
Thank you so much from an absolute beginner. I am doing leather jewelry (cuffs, embroidered bracelets, earrings) and am learning as I go. It is a wonderful pleasure to see you do these great videos, plus you are giving me so many ideas. And as always, a growing shopping list I need to practice techniques as my craft inventory grows.
I have a question. Not sure if it's something you could make into a video or not. But any insight would be appreciated. I have been wanting to build a suit of armor. I can't figure out how to measure for shoulder spaulders and the breast plate. Any tips or suggestions would be helpful. Thank you again for all you do.
Hi Mark, Do you have an email address that we can reach you at? If you don't want to post it here you're welcome to send us a direct message on either Facebook or Instagram. Thanks!
As a regular DIYer, I really love and appreciate The Leather Element series!! Can you give some pointers on dyeing suede/roughout? I’m dyeing a saddle, and it has a suede seat. I’ve seen other videos on “how-to”, but I fully trust in your expertise, and how you make it easy to understand! I’m using all products/supplies from Weaver Leather (including Pro Dye). Thanks in advance!
Love the video. I agree. The airbrushed design would look awesome on a brief case. One question though. How do you seal the dye so that it doesnt come out? Do u use resolene or an acrylic based finisher? Can resolene be used? New to leather work.
Yes, Resolene can be used to seal the dye. Every top coat is a little bit different, check out the video below to see some options! ruclips.net/video/8HtcBgkeQpg/видео.html
Hey Chuck, another great project and presented very well. I would like to see more about air brushing and some of the special effects that can be produced.
Hi John, The only other way I know of is to paint in dye with a “Fan Brush” and brush from the edge inward so the edge gets the heavier dye and the interior gets less. It’s not a perfect way to go but it looks pretty good and I may thin the dye a bit too so you have a little more control. You’ll see some light brush strokes but with some practice, you can get it pretty even. Good luck with it!
Hi thanks, your tutorial so useful . But may I ask something . I tried to deep dye with black color like you did and then made leather dry almost 12 hours before I made wallet from it. And the result is very good. but after putting my wallet on top of another wallet that is natural vegtan, the black color of the color wallet moves / clings to the natural vegtan color. Any treatment to leather after deep dye?
Hi Krida, Once the black dye has dried we recommend taking a cloth and buffing away any dye residue and then applying a top coat. This will seal in the dye and should keep it from rubbing off. We also recommend using Fiebing's Pro Dye.
All of your videos are very entertaining and very inspirational! Your positive and encouraging attitude has definitely pushed me to take on this hobby!
Hey Chuck, David here, as a new leather crafter your videos have been an enourmous help to me and still look forward to the next video. I really enjoy leather crafting.. You have been a big inspiration because you break things down really good and make it fun with your upbeat personality. Thanks! I just want to add a question. I have a kniife sheath I am working on that is going to have a carving and will need wet forming. Will the wet forming hurt the carving? Thanks
Thank you so much, David! You will lose some of the carving when you wet form. The leather will stretch when you bend and mold the holster so the impression won't be quite as deep. If you haven't yet, check out the video below on the holster we made- I just stamped the barrel of the holster and then when I wet formed it that part wasn't affected too much. Hope this helps! ruclips.net/video/xCaFJcZbKYk/видео.html
Hi Chuck I made that crazy horse belt and it came out awesome. I would like to know how to put a liner on it. It doesn't look like their is enough room to run a stich it on because of the spots. Keep up the great work,
Great video! Very helpful. I was hoping I could get some advice. A friend of mine hunts invasive species. He has given me several python skins he gets from Florida. I was wondering... your demonstration uses regular cow leather. Will that dye work on snakeskin? And which technique would work best? I would think that the only one that could handle the irregularities of the scales would be the dipping. Thanks for your time and the video!
Congrats!! Very deserved!!! I am so thankful for your time and teachings Chuck. I love learning and challenging myself and you encourage us to do so. Thank you Sir! 😊
Good Morning Chuck - thanks for some great video's! I tried my hand at dying leather last night and this morning couldn't believe how beautiful it looked!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS VIDEO ! I'M NEW AT THIS ! AND YOU ARE AWESOME AT EXPLANING , ON WHAT YOU'RE DOING ! THANK YOU VERY MUCH ! AND I WILL CERTENLY KEEP LOOKING FOR MORE OF YOUR VIDEOS !
Love everything you do, thanks chuck.also how about showing..how too sharpen my edge bevlers? I've had trouble with getting them sharp. Thanks for all your hard work.from..Pgh.
Hi Kevin, We actually have a video on sharpening edgers as well as some other tools, we'll link it below for you! ruclips.net/video/phAeANzrP2w/видео.html
Hey Chuck, thanks for teaching the different dye techniques. I found it VERY helpful for the type of work I do. (Mostly small Harley Davidson dash pieces). I am looking for a more consistent application and I am going to try the dip dye technique. VERY INFORMATIVE, Keep them coming!!!!
Thank you Chuck for youre timely effort in prepairing and giveing the explanations. O was needing a finish for saome braided Bracelets that will be receiving wear and tear and Sweat as they will be worn out in the wilderness for a while. As much protection as you can muster up wolud be Great! Aloha!
Love this, but I have questions... In order to get a good 'purple' color on a finished piece, should I use Veg-Tan? And then what about sealing in the dye; is there a product to use AFTER dying leather, to keep it from fading?
I have a question about the work bench in almost every video that chuck is in. I see there is what looks like black rubber matting built into the bench I am trying to actually figure what it is and where would a person find something similar? Thank you for putting out awesome content
Hi Ethan! The black rubber is called a poundo board and Chuck has two of the 12" x 24" laying on his table to make one big cutting area. We'll link them below so you can check them out. Hope that answers your question! www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/item-detail/3461-01/silent-poundo-board/pr_5776
Love the air brush technique! I have never use this, but will be looking for an air brush in the future. I don't mind dye on my hands and fingers, it just shows the ability to create something by hand.
great video. after you dye your project, do you use rtc to finish? looking to try this on veg tan for some projects to eliminate having to buy multiple sides of leather.
Enjoy the videos, great tips n tricks! Question: is it possible to remove a dye and re-dye? I'm looking for info, best I've found us soak in denatured alcohol, let dry, then dye. My project. Was given a simple cheap holster, but its color is too light (kinda natural color). Not sure how it's current color is, but I'd like to make it dark brown
We who need to thank you for every word you said on all your videos 🙏 Thank you for every thing again your channel is the best one I just started to love leather from the first video I watched on this channel I wish you more success and be always number one ☝🏻
Another great video! Thank you for this very informative series chuck, you always have great, well presented content! I have a request for an upcoming video. Top coats. I'd love to see a video on applying them and comparing their strengths and weaknesses (especially their resistance to water/sweat and flexibility). Not much info out there on this and it would be great to have as a reference! Thanks again!
Hey hey Chuck, I’ve been watching you for a couple of years now and have finally decided to jump in. I am a metalsmith and looking to incorporate leather accessories and goodies for my VIP customers. Thank you for your enthusiasm in teaching, your teachings are so easy to follow. Side note, just read your bio on weaver leather, awesome beginning. Once again, thank you for sharing all of your knowledge. 😊
This guy is killin me! I love his personality. It makes watching these videos that much more entertaining!
My god you’re sexy, he and I are both good at tanning in our own special ways;)
You're totally right! I "jump on over" and quote Mr. Chuck Dorset all the time! ❤
He sounds like the gunnery sergeant from Full Metal Jacket
The “good luck with your project” is motivating and it sticks
Bob Ross of Leather. This guy makes me happy!

Bob Ross, Mr Rogers, Bill Nye, and now Chuck Dorsett. Please keep on teaching and inspiring.
Good thing he didn't conclude with 'i hope you dye very soon!' :D love chuck's enthusiasm!

Thanks Chuck, I've seen that video but i'll give it another look.
Love what you do made my first holster pattern and holster last week used your videos to do it thanks John
Thank You for your hard work. Sharing and teaching me and others
Fantastic video series. Help on making home made dyes that are natural such as charcole and oil or cocao powder and oil etc.
Your videos are very helpful. I learn a lot
Thanks for the video i liked it. I love all types of leather but not the bonded one
Hi Chuck
I made that crazy horse belt and it came out awesome.
Thanks so much!

Great video! I consider myself a veteran leatherworker. But I really gain some insight while watching this. Thanks Chuck!
Thank you, Mac! Means a lot!

Love the air brush technique! I have never use this, but will be looking for an air brush in the future. I don't mind dye on my hands and fingers, it just shows the ability to create something by hand.
Nice video! Found this exactly when I needed it.
great video. after you dye your project, do you use rtc to finish? looking to try this on veg tan for some projects to eliminate having to buy multiple sides of leather.
We who need to thank you for every word you said on all your videos 🙏
Thank you for every thing again your channel is the best one
I just started to love leather from the first video I watched on this channel
I wish you more success and be always number one ☝🏻
Thank you so much, Sarah! 🙏
Thank you! We will definitely add this to the list of videos!
Hey Chuck! Was just searching on RUclips on how to die leather. Love your energy, you are very engaging! Great editing too. Congrats on 100K Subs.
Thanks for a wonderful video. Can you advise if same process works for horsehide?
Hey hey Chuck, I’ve been watching you for a couple of years now and have finally decided to jump in. I am a metalsmith and looking to incorporate leather accessories and goodies for my VIP customers. Thank you for your enthusiasm in teaching, your teachings are so easy to follow. Side note, just read your bio on weaver leather, awesome beginning. Once again, thank you for sharing all of your knowledge. 😊
Thank you so much, I hope you enjoy leatherworking!
Got a new question: Can you dye a suede seat and fenders on a saddle to get a closer match to regular leather skirting? Thanks!
Cheers for this, was looking for different techniques.
Glad it was helpful!
Oh please! I really need a giveaway!!
