You do good work and I respect the fact that everyone has their preferences. Leaving the tape on the back was a great tip for me. I have a habit of peeling it off quickly as possible because my tape leaves a sticky residue. Leaving it on will help. Thank you for sharing. I seal after antiquing simply to protect the antiquing gel. The acronym helps: If you want a good result, you must give a C R A P 1. C- Color 2. R- Resist 3. A- Antique 4. P- Protect
When you say "Color", do you mean the border dye that is used in this video? And for "Resist", could you use Resolene for both this and the "Protect" step?
I always think of stain as a way to cure edges by dunking the sewn edge in a darker or lighter colour, antique is my go to border treatment. It’s easy to do. I really appreciate hearing your optimism in treating leathers.
Sup Aaron great job on the dying and antiquing looks awesome as always Aaron thanks for showing us how to apply stuff two leather Aaron thanks for the tip Aaron keep up the good work Aaron! 🇺🇸
Anyone have experience with re-dying brown leather to black? After I remove any protectants, would it be advisable to use use color theory and neutralize some of the reds in the current brown using either blue, or green dye before dying the leather black? Any tips on re-dying brown boots black?
Great video. I was wondering, if you use a resist before putting the antique on, does the resist not prevent the antique from penetrating through to the leather?
@@makersleathersupply1220 ah thanks for clarifying. Does that mean that if you've already dyed the leather, the antique wouldn't have that much of an effect since the leather in the tool marks has already been coloured?
9:23 I been wondering how to fix this problem with my daubers for the longest and it’s been driving me crazy the way they are so uneven with the dye and leave streaks and stuff! So this process of lighting up the daubers putting them out and brushing off the burnt parts (like we did with toast or smores when we were kids kinda?) doesn’t effect the color of the dye? Like does the burnt dauber carry and transfer any of the burnt cotton/wool color along with the dye as you apply it? I ask cuz I can’t imagine how it could leave the dauber unchanged when applying it to leather. If that’s not a problem then thank you for the tip! That’s really clever.
What abouth leather seats,i have DIY them in vine led collor, and i need to seal them, but like you said when you pu a clear coat or how do you prounance it,it will be shiny, and i like mat finish,so do i need clear coat,or i can put some leather conditioner to seal them, because i have seen here on youtube, that people pain the seats, and just use like some sealent cream,or what it is,and like the guy said in the video, you need to put that on a 6month for protection.
Currently watching this with dark red dye on my fingers because I felt save and didn't use gloves. It's been there since yesterday and I already had 2 people at work tell me that I'm bleeding and the woman from the gas station ask me if I had murdered someone 😆Kind of awkward to say that you used dye on leather and didn't wear gloves. Still makes it sound weird to people who are not familiar with leatherwork. Can't even count the times I've heard sex references to me saying I work with leather, so the jump to death is probably not far from it for some 😆
I use water based dye and it penotrates almost aswell as thr pro dye. Not quote as far but not too far off. Dye a piece and cut it. You'll be surprised.
BEST video ive found on this subject ! its defenetly going in my leather bookmark folder. thank you

Just getting into Leather Crafting ... really appreciate you sharing your expertise!
I've always antiqued before sealing. I'll try sealing first next time. Great advice, thanks!
Thanks you've answered a lot of question for me
Very beautiful and interesting! Thank you for your video. 🙏🏻

Very pretty
Hard to focus on the video message becuase I'm in awe looking at everything in the shop!!
This comment loaded before the video, and as it starts, I can't agree more!
Great video Aaron So hoping to meet you next month in Prescott Az at the leather show.

Products Used:

Great video. I was wondering, if you use a resist before putting the antique on, does the resist not prevent the antique from penetrating through to the leather?
@jayplays568 it keeps the antique from coloring the leather itself. This way the antique only gets caught in the tooling marks.
@@makersleathersupply1220 ah thanks for clarifying. Does that mean that if you've already dyed the leather, the antique wouldn't have that much of an effect since the leather in the tool marks has already been coloured?
@@jayplays568 as long as the antique is darker than the dye it will still have the desired effect

I've never had any discoloration issues.
Oil dye, alcohol carrier?

Dear friend, its good job. Help me please, what can replace RTC sheridan resist finish? what is an alternative means instead of RTC? Thanks
Almost any other sealant or resist.
Have you tried Keda Dye, a product you suspend in either Alcohol or water?
Thanks
What was the make and color of the blue dye in the piece with the blue around the antiqued pattern? Much appreciated!
@@opengee feibing pro dye, royal blue

Can you mix thinner solvent to solvent based dye, and if so, can you double up on the amount of dye you have in inventory by mixing them together?
@randywilkinsii3768 you can.mix alcohol with it, and physically you would have twice as much but the color would be diluted by half.
💯🙏
Is the leather completely dry when you do this part
Yes, I wait for it to dry first

Unfortunately, I live in California and can’t get solvent based dyes! 😢
Did you buff it after resist dryed?
No, just made sure it was dry and went to antique
Aaron : I don't touch a bottle of dye without my stinking gloves on.
Me: *looks down at my black thumb 😕
Ha ha ha. Yep

Did I miss why you lit the dauber on fire? 😂
It burns off all the extra hairs and fibers and makes it easier to use for dyeing borders and edges.
But how 2 un dye a color u don't like?
Black 🤣
Nice video thanks for sharing.
You sound a lot like alex jones
Lol...I'll subscribe if he'll end his videos by yelling: "Turn the friggin frogs gay"!!!
Not a massive move
Huh?
