    This actually isn't the first time the memory Tardis has been seen. Unfortunately you don't have it in the US, but over in the UK we have a BBC iPlayer exclusive called Tales of the Tardis that came out in November as part of the 60th anniversary, at which the memory Tardis is at the centre of.
    The main bluck of each episode is actually just an omnibus edit of a classic story, however each episode has new scenes at the start and end reuniting old characters of the show as they share their memories.
    Initially there were 6 episodes covering a story each from the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th & 7th Doctors, however the day before this finale they released a 7th episode which featured 15 and Ruby looking back on the last time the Doctor fought Sutekh in Pyramid of Mars. Which also now means all 7 classic Doctors have an episode dedicated to one of their stories.

    Ok i think i understand, if time is a memory then memory is time travel. Ruby put so much significance on that night on ruby road that when she was introduced to the tardis, a tardis that is connected to that night due to it traveling there, a link in time was formed, a link that is opened, which is why it's snows. Her thinking about that night opens the link, inadvertently using the tardis to bring time to her. We only ever see it snow after she was introduced to the tardis. Memory alone can't literally travel through time, but a powerful memory might be able to, when a literal time machine is at play.

    "I'm burning for people to see the story of Ruby Sunday. It's amazing and has so much mileage in it. And it's still burning. It's wonderful. I can't wait for you to see it."
    But like her story seems complete, doesn't it? I know shes back next season, but the mystery around her mom is over and done.
    Unless they pull a Rise of Skywalker and go back on it. No wait, her mum is actually Palpat.... The Master!

    • @LabradorIndependent
      @LabradorIndependent 5 месяцев назад +4

      Yeah I agree. This whole season just felt like nothing actually mattered in the end? Like I'm okay with the big reveal being _"there is no big reveal"_ it's kinda RTD pulling a reverse-RTD, and making the mystery-box empty, but that has to in some way service the story, and it doesn't.
      We're told Sutek is keeping The Doctor and Ruby alive in order to find out. Then, the pair use that knowledge to defeat Sutek by tricking him. Then, we defeat Sutek with a separate plan entirely of dragging him into the vortex, which we're then told for sci-fi reasons this undoes all the death. Then finally we find out Ruby's mother was actually just a normal person. But none of those things actually link together. And *everybody lives*

      @@nickoftimeproductions8719I believe Roger is her brother. ap Gwilliam=son of William. He couldn't be her father because he's in his 30s/40s in 2046 so same age as Ruby more or less. Also I'm sure the snow has got to do with the Tardis rather than Ruby. It's such a strong memory for Ruby made even stronger by the weight given to it that the Tardis perception filter does something to bring the snow. The song I believe is just the importance and weight given to the memory but since her story is far from over I'm sure there's going to be a twist in season 2. Also let's not forget the mention of phoenix's. Susan Twist was normal until she wasn't. Maybe setting up Ruby's twist next season? We'll see I guess.
      Honestly I think I prefer episodic TV than season long arcs that take years to unravel which is why I didn't mind this season as much as the focus was on different adventures and only in the 2-part finale was it more "connected".

      Which I think could've worked if we'd been given a solid reason why Sutek would be like that - he's not exactly characterised beyond wanting to kill everything.
      I mean, I understand The Beast's motivation in The Satan Pit - escape. Do I want Satan to escape? I do not. Great, villain and audience motivation sorted. Throughout the story he's closer and closer to escaping, which makes the climactic collapse of the planet into the blackhole and subsequent death of possessed Toby deeply cathartic.
      Where here everything seems disconnected. Sutek has already won, by killing everyone. Then decides because of reasons he'd like to know who Ruby's mother is. Then he's defeated by the vortex, which because of reasons again reverses all the death. That's alright though, the audience remains motivated by who Ruby's mothers is- and oh never mind.
      Bit of a meringue of an episode.

      5/10. Performances are always great. But the story just had too many plot holes in it, and not in a " we'll answer these later" kind of way, but in a "WTF, that doesn't make sense" way. I can understand the messaging with the mother and not revealing who Mrs Flood is, but then, why make the former the center of the season? Or have a better explanation for the ordinary nature of it all? And then there's Sutekh, they spent about 9 episodes teasing his return and hyping him up as the god of all gods but once he does the initial thing, he doesn't have much else to do anymore and then the way he's defeated just makes you nervous, what if he were to fall somewhere else he'll cause even more trouble, etc. They could've spent a little more time on how to utilize and then defeat him. Other than that, Performances were good but I expect better than this come S15/S2

    • @Saandy_
      @Saandy_ 5 месяцев назад +2

      I really appreciated it. Roger Ap Gwilliam was teased so hard but sadly we never got real answers, and Ruby's story isn't wrapped up imo. What's the snow about? Why did Maestro sense something wrong with Ruby, just because Sutekh was there on Ruby road? Ultimately I was satisfied, however. We have more time with Ruby next season, and I'm starting to think the trickster might actually happen at that time. I cried quite a lot. I even cried for Sutekh, or maybe more specifically that the doctor had to put him down so brutally. I don't think any answer to Ruby's mom could have been more satisfying than what we got.
      Oh, and I don't usually rate things on a scale, because it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
      8/10
      Some of the CGI early in the episode was sadly disappointingly bad, especially compared to the Sutekh scenes, and Ruby's mom pointing to a sign so dramatically by herself in the middle of the night isn't a satisfying answer as it just doesn't make sense. I don't buy it to the point that I'm wondering if it really was Ruby's mom under that cloak.

    I've a feeling that Mrs. Flood isn't exactly a villain like other people think but some kind of a 'fairy godmother' who could be shielding Ruby's family from the evil gods' wrath for some mysterious reason (or perhaps she uses Ruby's 'secret heritage' as a ploy/red herring to fool Sutekh and take his place, I dunno), not to mention the snow appears again when Flood breaks the fourth wall for the second time (in which she predicts 15's fate through some kind of godly powers), implying she's the ONE who causes the snow to fall. However, her connection to Ruby's family and her ultimate goal still remain an enigma.

  • @thombruce
    @thombruce 5 месяцев назад +24

    Fully agree with Greg that these should have been two parts. I also think last week's episode was sparse on story - the first two thirds just felt like padding for time - so I personally think that the first half of this episode should have been done last week. Rather than end on the Sutekh reveal, keep going - show the full extent of Sutekh's Empire of Death, end in true Infinity War style with that gorgeous shot of the Doctor screaming out of the TARDIS doors into a dying universe; let us sit with THAT for a week.
    I still loved the episode, I think this was a great story, but it could have so much more weight I think if they'd started this episode with something like the woman and spoon scene. There's an implied time jump there anyway, so why not separate that from the previous scenes by an actual week of real time. It's an ideal place to restart the story - seeing the Doctor, Ruby and Mel visiting worlds to gather MacGuffins and witnessing the last breaths of dying worlds. Would have given more time to flesh out Mel's reintroduction that would have made her turn more impactful too.
    Also... metal? The Doctor couldn't find a piece of metal on the Memory TARDIS? I'd also use that additional time to convey that it isn't metal he needs, it's sentiment, it's memory - things that are hard to come by in a universe where everyone (and therefore sentiment) is dead. In fact, I'm head-canoning that - the Doctor didn't need a metal spoon, he needed an item of sentimental value.
    Apart from that, I have few other criticisms; those other criticisms I do have would be even more nit-picky. It was a great episode.

    • @TrovaoSmasher
      @TrovaoSmasher 5 месяцев назад +4

      Actually, it's the opposite. He needs real metal, not a memory of one. He says as much when he breaks the spoon in half

    • @thombruce
      @thombruce 5 месяцев назад

      @@TrovaoSmasher You’re right. I’d forgotten that line of dialogue…
      But I think my greater point stands. Metal is inert-it isn’t a living thing. I don’t think it should be rare in a dying universe, whereas objects of sentimental value kinda would be; at least thematically in the sense that the people who give objects sentimental value are dying.
      Either way I think the scene just exists to humanise the crisis, and I think an emphasis on sentimental memory attached to an object would have played off the episode’s themes just that little bit better… but i’m definitely being a bit nit-picky.
      Though on future viewings I’m still assuming that spoon was important to that woman. Gives that scene a little more purpose.

      @@kay-jay1581 Yeah, I think the season length is fine. I wouldn’t split this episode into two, I’d just move the first half of it into last weeks (which felt like it spent too much time setting up the story and almost none advancing it).
      There are a few other changes I’d have liked across the season, but overall I’ve been happy with it. The only episode I didn’t like was Space Babies… but that’s fine-most seasons of Doctor Who have episodes that suck. For this season to only have one episode I didn’t care for is pretty remarkable.

      It snowed because SOMETHING didn't want the universe to end. Maybe Time, or maybe the tardis which is, you known, an eldritch abomination in its own right.
      A 15 year old kid giving birth, doing something random that only matters to her? Teens aren't usually known for thinking rationally and having recently given birth and in shock less rational.
      One sutekh so goes to one tardis. Besides for all we know it's the same tardis at different points in time.
      Memory tardis probably gone.
      14 and donne dust just comedy gold for later.
      And lastly Sutekh is an arrogant monster who spent billions of years watching everything and STILL wanting to destroy everything. Someone this arrogant or stupid wouldn't realize hey maybe this one thing I can't see isn't important. He literally wants to kill everything out of the fear something might evolve to challenge him. And considering he knows about the pantheon of chaos he might think Ruby is the child of the Trickster, Mara or some other eldritch monster and is just waiting to see what their 'plan' is. That's the whole point of Sutekh. He literally can't stand the idea of life because he thinks the living are pathetic and only he deserves to exist, so the thought ANYTHING is outside his grasp would drive him mad. He's the equivalent of a spoiled child being told no about anything, it rankles him.

Although the emotional pay off was really good at the end of the episode, many things throughout the season were riding on the mystery Ruby’s mum and the show convinced us that she was something special. Maestro in episode two had that whole thing about the “oldest one”. Sutekh, a literal god couldn’t see her or even KILL her. The literal god of death could not kill Ruby’s mum. Does that not point to some immense power. The only reason the Doctor was kept alive was because of that mystery. And, at the end of it all, she is just ordinary, which is fine, but all of the supernatural stuff is explained as “we thought she was important, so she was important.” I’m sorry what???? Doc said Sutekh made him the bringer of death not bc he killed Sutekh, he's killed plenty before, he said it bc in order to fix things, he had to literally bring death to all creation by pulling Sutekh through the entire Time Vortex once again

    So when i started watching this season - someone on reddit who apparently worked on the show said there was a hidden celestial character who was the embodiment of storytelling and because she often mentioned stories everyone assumed it was Ruby but i think it was Mrs Flood and it was even more confirmed by how she ended the episode like a bedtime story

    Kinda disappointed they didn’t follow up on the Granddaughter bit. I do not think next season they will continue that thread and I will be pleasantly surprised if they do follow up on Susan.

    I think the “Penzance” sticker on Mrs. Flood’s suitcase may be a significant clue. Penzance is a town in Cornwall, but in the ancient Cornish language “Penzance” translates to “Holy Headland”. The area also has odd folklore, including an Arthurian legend about a place near Penzance called Lyonesse- a land that sank into the sea in a single night. She’s definitely a deity of some sort, but who knows what big plans she has in store? Only time will tell!

    So the snow… Ruby was in the Time Window surrounded by snow. Then they boarded a memory TARDIS and went into the time vortex, but they were still connected to the Time Window. Ruby projected her memory of the snow into various points in her life. She sent a projection of her old self back in time. If the Time Window can make a TARDIS it can make anything.

    The ending to the plot of a lot of Star Trek TNG and X-Files episodes only comes at the very last minute and they never feel rushed so maybe they should take a page out how TNG episodes was made.

      It doesn’t help to dispel the theory when Mrs. Flood comes out in a white coat the way River wore white coats. The never really knowing if we’re dealing with villain or hero with how she treated Cherry. The snark. I’m willing to guess River or the Master.

    😊 hello boys. So maybe you already know, but if not, no spoilers here. At the time that we are watching the finale Millie Gibson had decided to return to the series. When they shot this whole series, she was not going to return so that’s why this season ended the way it did with an actual end to Ruby’s story. But I think now the fact that she changed her mind or they worked something out and she is returning for the next season. It works better now build up of their adventures together.

    I love how people are mad at tons of plot holes in Dr Who. It's like THE show that always has been "don't think too hard about it or you'll find a ton of inconsistencies" why did we become such creatures of wanting all our questions answered all the time? who cares? It keeps snowing btw at the end with Mrs Flood, so that might be a mystery for next season, totally possible knowing RTD, and the pointing to the sign makes little sense? so what? It's a memory in a TIME WINDOW what in this makes sense? death and death = life? come on, ofc It's ridiculous, almost like every single time that the Doctor reversed time or space or whatever to save the galaxy.
    And obviously, I'm no shill for RTD, It's clearly far from perfect, but It's perfectly enjoyable without pointing every plot hole, asking to have an answer to every question and ragebaiting "Dr Who was better before" when It was EXACTLY the same in the old era and in the reboot era. Go watch all those again, a lot of episodes "explanation" or "resolution" are a bunch of last second ex machina or "timey wimey" stuff that makes no real life sense. And that's OK.

    Very good epsiode and very hearwarming at the end. All those people scrambling from the bus was ridiculous though. If you see a giant dust clouds approaching and you have no way of knowing that it is killer dust, would you rather be out in the street or inside a bus with closed doors? 😉

    Not ending the last episode with the infinity war style dusting is a rookie error too, opening with it instead kills the stakes for the rest of the episode because you know it has to end with at least a partial reversal 😂

    The fact that no joke is made about taking sutek for a walk on a leash kinda drives me crazy, like just a short doctor speech to ruby running over a plan along the lines of "and WHAT do you Do with a Big Misbehaved Mutt??" "you Leash em up Honey! *Laughs(but not in a meniacal way, in a sorta self conscious uncertain kinda way, because hes trying to lighten the act of killing with a little bit of levity for fear ruby wont look at him the same) as he begins to drag sutek through the time vortex
