I've had an A.A.S. in Transportation and Logistics Management since 2014. I've never been hired for a transportation or logistics position after getting this degree because at the local port they require two to three years of experience. Getting my degree was a complete waste of time and money and a real source of frustration because I have to repay these school loans.
This is the most practical advices I've ever heard. Thanks for sharing.

I'm really glad I stumbled upon your channel Rob. Some seriously great info! I've worked in supply chain in Melbourne for over 10 years and I'm looking at starting a consultancy for very small customers who don't get looked after by the big players, making it very hard for them to enter the Australian market. I feel I've got the contacts and expertise to design some great solutions for these smaller business and look to grow with them. I know I have plenty to offer with my global logistics experience, but I don't know how to go about starting an actual business. Great to find this channel.

I picked up an internship at Walmart eCommerce, interning as a process manager on the operational side. I went to school for general biz and fell in love with SC during uni. During my time at Walmart (about a month in), I have found that supply chain is my powerhouse... people management, number crunching (in terms of performance metrics), and TONS of improvement projects on the side. My advice for those who want to enter into this field: definitely grab a degree in biz or a package of certifications, and think about constant improvement! LEAN Six Sigma certs are a terrific place to start
Whats your opinion on getting an entry level job in ecommerce? Also, a position on the digital side that does not involve dealing with customers. I don't mind communicating with vendors and/or suppliers though.
@@clevelend22 entry level jobs in ecommerce usually fall into operations or buying/planning (unless you are talking about extremely entry level such as a warehouse associate). I was involved in entry level management in operations, which typically would require 4 or 5 years of management experience -- which sounds weird, I know -- or through an internship and get hired on. It sounds like you would be a buyer/planner, which typically is a good "starter" job with no people management, just working with Transportation Management Systems and coordinating shipments (which can get a little hectic at times, believe me). If you are talking solely digital, then supply chain is constantly evolving which is where IT experience would come in handy -- coding, system maintenance and troubleshooting, etc.

Supply Chain Secrets I work for a firm based out of Irvine California where we manufacture and distribute mobile electronic accessories. As an entry level supply chain manager I primarily deal with inventory management, retail fulfillment and logistics. Watching the video you covered all the steps. As a recent graduate (BA-Ops/Supply Chain) I would say school is perhaps the most important- I’ve been with the same company since 2012 and I was never afforded opportunities until I had that degree. Hope all the best to everyone out there pursing this grueling, yet rewarding career! Ps- don’t let your pride get in the way of your progression, as the man said, it’s all about experience!! In this field one task builds upon the next, familiarize yourself with them. You can’t be an effective leader if you’ve never been in your employees shoes. APICS CPIM and Six Sigma black belt will be my next step, followed by MBA.

I used to work in an outsourced logistics company , a big one in the US but my manager let go of them and it broke my heart. I was the team leader for my team , I trained them and managed them at the same time. We are the 1st outsourced company that they chose to work with. We do track and trace for them. I miss the job so much ..

Very informative! I am planning on taking up a post diploma in Supply Chain Manaagement in Canada this year. Have already got acceptance from one of the schools I plan to attend to. Still waiting for other offers. I do have a company here in the Philippines importing industrial products for our clients. But I am still open to apply for a job to other large companies in Canada to get an experience and leave my company to my manager - but still make all decisions while in Canada.

I have started working as a warehouse assistant 4 years ago, currently working for a year on an aviation company in Greece as a procurement officer. BSc in Marketing and Advertising, MSc in Management Science and Technology (some of the courses contained SAP hands-on experience, Supply Manegement, Transportation System Management e.t.c.), looking for ways to progress my career further. Thinking about obtaining a certification at the moment to pursue a better job position.

I am a fresh grad from BSc Maritime Business Administration, I was accepted by Trinity College for their master's degree in SCM. When I checked the core subjects being taught and studied myself a little, it made me think that SCM, not only studies but real life, involve such a great amount of numerics that only an industrial engineer would suit well into it, rather than the one did nothing much but ground calculus or traces of operations research. Do you think it should rather be qualified as an engineering branch? You also mentioned the finance branch but I guess it also needs the knowledge of modelling and calculation? I also got offered for Shipping&Logistics by Newcastle, their courses were much more familiar but wanted to try something out new and to survive in a new ecosystem in the future even though it looks very tough... Look forward to hearing your opinions

Would you say military logistical experience helps in standing out/getting a position?
Also, how many years of service would be ideal/stand out from the other veterans.
It can, depending on the job you are seeking. Though it is hard sometimes for the experience to 'translate'. 10 years might be good, 20 can be bad.
I tried all sorts of clever tricks to get work and I have strong qualifications. Truth is I got a job by applying to the recruitment agency to the biggest local employer. Just said I was big and strong. From there I was loading within 3 days. From there I was working in admin within a week. Then you can try and steer where they put you so you learn a lot. No faffing, with getting in there. At certain times of years places will take on almost anyone who is keen and you can just give it a blast from there. Networking to get to the bottom of the ladder to me seems a bit faffy.
I suppose my point is the best network is the work network.
I agree if you are starting off at the bottom of the ladder, recruiting companies, labour hire companies are the way to. Just get a foot in the door!
Most of the questions I get here are from graduates looking for entry level management positions. But for those who just want to get a foot in the door, I agree 100% with you.

It's always hard starting out. I would advise 2 things. (1) get a 'start' on the ground floor if you can, get noticed and you'll soon move up and (2) go where the jobs are......

@@supplychainsecrets I am currently an inventory manager and retail store manager (same place) so I have my foot in the SCM field. My previous manager was an operations manager with a BA in psych and I was an excise duty bookkeeper but started as a packer (got promoted based on my degree, no one else there despite being ten years older were working on higher ed). So the fields are not directly related but they are transferable. Any advice on how to proceed? I feel like an MBA isn't necessary until I'm a bit older.

THe Military will give you good experience and skills, but a lot of Military Logistics experience does not transfer that easily to civilian business. I know, I spent 22 years in the Military, and have interviewed and hired many ex Military people..

I wanna go into supply chain but i have a degree in industrial design which is more about designing and manufacturing the product itself a bit like product design but a bit more technical. I only have experience in retail but do have a masters in entrepreneurial design management. What part of supply chain would i best have a chance at ? probably not wanting anything primaryily revolved around numbers and finance. You mentioned something about solution design? what is the job title for this part of supply chain industry.

I have 12 years of IT experience in Software testing field. I did a part time certificate course in export/import management & learnt abt Supply chain management field. I'm looking to move from Software testing field to a business management field like SCM. Would you suggest it will be a good idea to switch career to SCM(will my 12 yrs corporate work experience help in SCM job although its a software specific experience) or should I continue doing current software testing job.
Tough call changing, but all business experience is good experience. Don't worry too much.
Tell us about your First Supply Chain related job! What was it?
I did work for a French Supermarket called Carrefour. I started as Inventory Assistant, I moved to procurement/purchase (through suppliers already in the system) and KPI controller. I got promoted to be the supervisor of this department and also I was in charge of Receiving Goods. My responsibilities can be summed up as I was in charge to keep the store stocked and avoiding as much as possible running out of stocks. Because I loved this job and I got to know about the Supply Chain I decided to do my Engineering Degree and unfortunately I wasn’t able to get back to the industry. I moved to Melbourne, Australia and I want to get into the field here. That was 10 years ago. Companies see my work experience no longer relevant, so I need to try to start from an entry level. I would like your advise on what kind of positions could I start with on an entry level. Thanks.

@Garrett Modesitt so I currently work for Costco wholesale and I learned that they don’t even require a degree for any of their positions, even supply chain/logistics. I’m thinking I’m going to ride that train to corporate and see how it goes. I think the 4 year degrees got slammed into our heads in high school so now I’m concerned for no reason with only obtaining a 2 year

I don't have a bachelors in Supply Chain Management and Logistics nor do I have experience in it. But I've been studying for couple of months on Coursera and other online learning and also trying to pursue a graduate degree in Supply Chain Management and Logistics. Do you think this is a good way to get into the industry/job? My lack of experience in the field seems to be limiting my chances of even getting entry level positions in supply chain/logistics.
Keep trying, keep applying and I'm sure you get something soon.
As he had mentioned....NETWORK. You would be amazed what skills are needed in this field. There is so much out there that really requires such a breadth of knowledge that it is rare that someone cannot find a home in Supply Chain Management. FMCG Companies and Retailers often have some of the best entry-level opportunities that can help you build a great and diverse skillset. For example: I started at Target on the Store side. I ran Hardlines and Logistics. It is what set my path toward distribution for other retailers and then as my career has progressed, and I have tackled bigger challenges, I am not at a Gartner's Master company putting skills I never knew I would need to use daily. I landed every job through networking. Only one of my jobs was a blind application (and it was my worst one). A graduate degree can help, but if you join the right company...they will pay for it. I didn't pay for my MBA, and I will not likely pay for my MS in SCM and PhD.

I work as a logistician. I've got 19 years of school learning, 2 degrees, my boss is in this for 30 years and she's soo good at it. It doesn.t matter school, you need to be made for logistics. Here, you meet the most stressfull jobs.

Hi sir , I'm mechenical Engineer in final sem and got 2 job offers in business analysis which are paying well in comparison to my core companies and I don't mind working in any industry rn I'm only focusing on higher pay + opportunity to learn and get some skills . Due to recent events related to unfortunate covid 19 many companies are shifting to India from China that to in my home state UP which seems promising conditions for getting entry level job in supply chain . There might be lots of scope, but the difficulty is always getting a Work Permit / Visa. As well, you are competing for jobs with people in that country, and employers will often choose local candidates as it's just easier in terms of language, culture, local industry knowledge etc. Often the best approach is to get a job in your own country with a multi national business. that can open up opportunities to relocate.

It really depends what you intend going with in the future career-wise. I'd advice operations and supply chain management. There are just tiny variations from the course content of each. Be warned that this course is very demanding also.

There are so many good schools around the World that's a tough question. I went to Cranfield in UK, regarded at the time as one of the top 10, but it doesn't seem to even rank anymore! Hi, the difficulty is always getting a Visa. Not easy sadly. Most people come to Australia as a student and then try to get work after finishing their studies. But you need a company to sponsor you and then after a few years you can get a permanent Visa. We have just hired an Indian post grad student who finished his Masters in Supply Chain here. But the point is, you really need to be here......to get the job. Good luck.

Hi I’m a high school senior debating between CS and Supply chain Managment and logistics to major in college. I am more interested in SCm and logistics but my two questions are is a BS in SCM or do I need a Masters as well later on? Is the demand for this degree always gonna be at a high in the US and Canada and what is the average salary I will be looking at has an intern? If anyone has the answer to there questions please let me know
CS? Can't really comment on the US and Canada, as I'm based on the other side of the World. It all depends on what type of career you want in Supply Chain. And what career path you want to follow. But a Bachelor degree is important if you want to rise through management roles and a Masters will be fairly essential to go further. But an MBA will likely be better than more SCM study at Masters level. Or do both! I might get a friend of mine on an interview who I think has 3 or 4 masters degrees! And rose up through Supply Chain to be the CEO of a multi billion $ retailer.

I’m not really looking at doing a masters AS OF NOW but from what I’ve read and interviewed people who are in this position the money is good as well as it being a promising career. Hopefully a Bachelors of Science is good enough for this. Do you also recommend taking logistics courses for this field?
Logistics is not a separate subject, it's a subset of SCM.
