For those interested, FPGA literally just means a programmable processor, so instead of a fixed specifically designed and manufactured processor chip with fixed transistors inside that are connected in a fixed way, you have a universal chip that can be (re-)programmed to change the way some components behave and how they're connected. It's used mostly for prototyping and small production sizes, where manufacturing the typical Intel-style processors would be extremely expensive. Typically, the cost is that they're slightly less performant, less efficient, and more expensive at a large scale, but for audio processing, none of those are an issue.
Aune now sells an open-backed dynamic headphone called the AR5000 that I'm listening to right now paired with the M1p. I couldn't find any info about the AR5000 from Western sources and little enough on the Chinese web but I bought the headphones anyway along with the M1p on 11-11. I can't compare them to all the high end headphones you have around there but I can say I like them way more than my 6XX. The sound is immersive, natural and clean. It's the closest that headphones have brought me to sitting in the sweet spot in a surround-sound speaker system. They don't quite have the same bass rumble as my 12 inch Velodyne had and the overall sound is a bit thinner but it really does remind me of that long ago system. I'm experiencing that thing now where I just have to finish the song I'm listening to because the sound is so engaging....and then the next song and the next. I haven't had this much fun listening to music since.... well, I guess since I had that old Velodyne sub.
@ZReviews the most comfortable dap you may hold in your hand is cowon j3. Its 70 grams and slimmer! Its just unbeatable. It was released 12 yras ago and still in size-weight-comfort - champion.
Hello Zeus. Please check and compare the Aune M1p with Chord Mojo 2 (which is also a FPGA) connected with a phone thtough USB C , or with a DAP through coaxial out (I do that with my Fiio M9 as transport), and tell us how similar they are.
@@ZReviews The years have past and the firmware has been completed. Now the only downsides are extreme heat and very short battery life. EDIT: Oh and an output impedance of 80ohms on the balanced connection.
Thanks for the review. Saw this thing at HighEnd a few days ago and wondered if it was any good - if I knew it was that impressive I'd definitely tried it out. Still wouldn't buy it because limited software is exactly the reason I'm trying to replace my current DAP. Great taste in Waifus btw, I think I see multiple Shinobus in there ^^
I also also saw it there in Munich and bought it a day later. Compared to the shangling M1s it is sounds much better - there is practically no noise floor (=black background) and the bass has more power. It is not that the bass is elevated like with an EQ, but it has more dynamic and is faster and deeper. I found this even to be the case with 15€ earphones. But the Hifiman Sundra works perfect with it (very deep and full sound) (Upgraded with balanced cable!) I also think the Bluetooth support is a very good feature since you can stream anything from your smartphone to the device and still make use of the very good headphone amplifier. The smartphoine should be near by, up to 2-3m. When streaming flac playback, it is hard for me to tell the difference to local playback. Weaknesses are: When powering on, it scanns all files, this takes 12 seconds with my ca 25K tracks. I don't know why they do this. There is a endless list of tracks under "Music" which is not really useful, eycept if you have just 30 tracks on your SD card. Tracks with long titels are simply skipped and in general the display of the track list is limited. That could be improved so easily! It locks the display and there is just one button to enable the screen again - the power button. So it happens a lot to me, that I power it off by accident. But anyway - compared to my other player with touch screen, this is makes much more fun to use and sounds simply - flawless. I think the secret of this DAP is a very good amplifier and power supply - this results is very good bass and Instrument Separation on one hand, on the other a mediocre battery life. The device also gets a bit warmer than you would expect from a DAP.
BTW - the bluetooth feature is hidden on the down button. Very long press switches to bluetooth receiver mode (and back). In this mode the volume control works, but not pause and skip buttons and there is no display of what is beeing played.

@@ZReviews got em. Thanks for the response. Without question the best reviewer on the web and whenever I hear the word “fuckery” my spidey senses go on high alert. Your ears are telling you something is definitely “different” and I respect and understand that. Bought a SONY NW A something and found some preset that floored me. Your comments on this new unit are clearly eclipsing the preset I found and it makes me wonder if some form of AI is used. Perhaps you are old enough to have used Volume Logic that was all the rage of mp3 listeners 20 years ago. It would on occasion turn some synth sound into a “real” instrument making one wonder what “fuckery” is going on now. Being 70 and having lost no small amount of my hearing, I still can hear small differences in my source materials, so reviews like yours are valuable to me, and I thank you for them. Bought Sundaras and Olinas partly because of your recommendations. (I think, might have been that weird Korean guy). Nonetheless, your mind and ears form the most useful baffle for what I am considering purchasing. Keep it up. Aune M1p might be all you claim it to be, but the complexity of finding and playing a particular cut seems daunting. I’m sure I could master it in time, but by that time Aune will probably have improved the interface. Again, thanks for the response. Had no idea you read us outliers and old fogeys.
I truly have a difficult time believing that companies still make these things. Should have died with the advent of phones. Price to performance is soooo far off my phone (which I have to buy anyway) and a dongle. Hard pass on DAPs
@@ZReviews you definitely have a point but DAPs seem pretty niche in what’s already a niche market. I guess I like my components separate as much for portable headphones as for stereo. Can a DAP really be that much better than a portable DAC/amp with a phone?

Had no idea you read us outliers and old fogeys.
good sound but poor UX/UI design....
I DARE you to do something different! Shots other than a dizzying GoPro on your head! Sucks your good work gets trashed by unwatchable video omg
I truly have a difficult time believing that companies still make these things. Should have died with the advent of phones. Price to performance is soooo far off my phone (which I have to buy anyway) and a dongle. Hard pass on DAPs
When was the last time an Audiophile cared about convenience over quality?
@@ZReviews you definitely have a point but DAPs seem pretty niche in what’s already a niche market. I guess I like my components separate as much for portable headphones as for stereo. Can a DAP really be that much better than a portable DAC/amp with a phone?
It's exactly what I was looking for! My poor wallet though 🥲😂
