    i’m a pretty new zelda fan in the grand scheme of things. i was into it a little when i was younger but that was confined to watching PBG & chuggaconroy letsplays bc i was too stupid to figure shit out on my own. botw came out on my birthday when i was twelve and i was still too stupid to figure it out on my own, but i’ve now amassed some ridiculous 130 hours in a month. going to be asking for some advice here ->
    my big struggle with finding which game to play next is a really unfortunate one - i’m physically disabled (that’s the reason i have the time to play this much botw LOL) and i can’t really do motion controls. all the wii games seem super heavy on them. i got the skyward sword remake, but the first boss is reportedly pretty much unbeatable if you have motion controls disabled. i am slowly working on the DS games but the console is terrible for my hands… better than dislocating my wrists swinging my wii remote, but only marginally.
    i’m basically wondering if there are any LOZ games that are good quality and lighter on motion controls for the wii?? i know the wii is heavy on motion controls so i honestly sort of doubt it LOL, but if there is one that would be super useful.
    also, little note just in case: this isn’t asking for pity or sympathy, just looking for advice from any fans of the series who may have it!

      Hey I'll try to help! So, the unfortunate thing is that all of the Wii and DS Zelda games do rely on motion controls or a bottom screen touch gimmick. Also sadly, there is no eshop anymore to get older games.
      The good news is that those consoles are backwards compatible so you can get the Gamecube games (Wind Waker and Twilght Princess) and Gameboy Advance games (Minish Cap and A Link to the past) and play them on those consoles

    • @robxsteed
      @robxsteed  Год назад +25

      Also, the Switch has the Link's Awakening remake and it's super fun and charming. Or if you want the NES & SNES games the switch has those for free if you have Switch Online.
      Sidenote: I are started watching PBG when he was doing his Majoras Mask playthrough

    My friend suggested that after I play BOTW, I play Age of Calamity to get used to a more linear form of playing a Zelda game, and then after that, I started to play Skyward Sword. Then I played Wind Waker and then Twilight Princess. And that was how I ended up loving LoZ

    • @daniel8181
      @daniel8181 5 месяцев назад

      I looked at the series from both a game design perspective and from the original intent of the series so I could come up with the definitive path through the series for my wife, who had only played botw.
      You start with botw because every other entry has quirks that create barrier to entry and potentially frustrate a new player.
      Then it makes sense to do aoc- but its a spinoff so it depends-were saving it to play coop.
      Next is skyward sword - its closing the fence in on freedom, but its open zones, weapon scaling, and shield durability will feel familiar, and the themes will be important for the next entry
      Totk - youll open right back up, but totk takes its time with you and the tutorial area feels more like the open zones of ss, when the game fully opens up and purah and impa want to push you to complete the dungeons in a scaling order and the tears in the chronological order - you'll now understand how to follow along because ss taught you how the zelda team's logic goes. Totk's themes will also fully fruit next to ss, and you will have found them both more satisfying.
      Next is ww - from here you will start getting linear dungeons, but in an open world that, while not as lively as the others, is more inviting and adventurous than that of tp.
      This is another chance to get to the side-content. After finishing ww, st is amazing, but its worth going through ph first, as again, were slowly trading freedom for narrative...but they can be skipped entirely.
      So I think at this point its a question of "which game did you like the most?"
      If "botw/totk" then loz>Aol>alttp>albw>la>tp>oot>mm
      If "ww/ss" then
      Tp>oot>mm>alttp>albw>la>aol>loz
      You want to slowly close the games around them so they can give an honest opinion - and then if they say they like one thing over the other you need to reverse course a little bit and ease it more slowly
      As a note on that, Do not let people play the emulation or original oot/mm unless you modded a camera in, because it's an absolute nightmare and will frustrate anyone to no end. Similar to that, either cheat enable on an emulator or use nintendo online for aol and loz because unless your new player likes dark souls they will end up in a serious, frustrating grind.

Interesting fact, he got into the Zelda games exactly how you did, I had an emulator on my PC with N64 games with Smash Bros, he would play it with me and then kept asking who the dude with the shield and sword was, told him it was Link from Legend of Zelda and that sparked his interest, ever since then hes been a huge fan and eventually got me into it. I started with Ocarina of Time (didn't finish) and moved on to Majora's Mask which turned out to be my favorite to this day. The thing about Majora's Mask is that it's got so many interesting concepts like Bomber's Notebook, skipping through time, 24 masks which each of them changing gameplay in a way. The only thing about it is that N64 controls were kinda janky, but the gameplay is definitely worth it.

      @catdownthestreet [Fly High Tweek3rP0p🦋] Getting stuck in Ocarina of Time is all part of the fun! It makes me kind of sad that I can fly past the opening part of the game now, I miss being able to spend all day going through the lost woods as a kid. I know part of my love for it is nostalgia, but I think it's just a magical game in general.

  • @narufan987
    @narufan987 Год назад +7

    Since Ocarina was the jump to 3d and people were not yet super familiar with that, I'd say the learning curve is pretty forgiving for a new player. It's also a very rounded game while still being fairly basic (no motion controls, wolf transformation or searching for triforce pieces), so it's a good starting point from which you can go to any other 3d Zelda. The QoL improvements in the 3DS version also make it even more beginner-friendly.
    If we're going for 2d, Minish Cap is also fairly simple & arguably the easiest entry in the series without too much hand holding, so it's also a good way to get into the series

    Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time are near perfect primers for someone wanting a taste of Classic Zelda without too much side mechanics going on, and both are easily playable on the Switch through the online service and WiiU virtual console, as well as the 3DS. Links Awakening would be my third choice due to the recent remake and also general adherence to the Classic Formula. Then from there the more divergent and celebrated games - Majoras Mask, the Oracles, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, and after all of those basically anything goes.

    I could argue that BotW is not necessarily a bad place to start. It really depends on where you go afterwards. I had never played a Zelda game until 2018 where I bought BotW on a whim. Through that game, I found people who are now part of my own little community and with them I've been exploring older titles - completely out of order, but who cares as long as I have fun, right? ;)
    I have been given the gift of experiencing Wind Waker, Links Awakening, Ocarina of Time, finished Majora's Mask just last week. I've even picked up Phantom Hourglass and am honestly enjoying it. Minish Cap. And I'm about to embark on a Link between Worlds this weekend. All because I got tired of playing Pokemon during Christmas 2018 and asked a friend if BotW was worth the price tag. I still play BotW, but I always have an older Zelda game on the go these days. So honestly, BotW is not necessarily a bad place to start. The lore drew me in and I am not going anywhere anytime soon.

    My personal entry point was Breath of the Wild and I went to Link's Awakening and then Skyward Sword after that since my current active console is the Switch. I plan to start Ocarina of Time And Majora's Mask (via NSO) sometime in January once I finish the story mode of some other game I'm working through. I won't lie, BotW as an entry game meant the steep lore learning curve put me in denial for weeks ("THREE TIMELINES????") and while I'll still recommend it to new players, they're probably going to end up in a similar cycle to me. I garnered my understanding of the whole franchise from wikidiving and watching lore videos for games I've yet to play and that's only something I could do because I discovered Zelda during lockdown. I avoided gameplay videos with the sole reason of wanting to play them myself one day and for a new fan, this can be overwhelming. It was hard to convince my own friends who were interested to start and where to start because (compared to other lore heavy games with easier entry points). Just because it worked out for me doesn't mean it'll work out for everyone

      I started with Breath of the Wild too!! I found it to be a great way to get into the series, especially once I had played some of the older Zelda titles, I could actually go back and understand/find some references to the other games. After BOTW, I went to Twilight Princess since I absolutely LOVE the art style, music, gameplay etc of the game, and to this day, it is my favourite game of all!! Then I got to most of the 3D Zelda games (Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Skyward Sword etc) and am yet to play most of the 2D ones (I seem to prefer the 3D titles and find the 2D ones harder even though most players seem to find them easier). But I do agree that my mind was completely overwhelmed when I found out how much lore was behind the Zelda games, I do have to add, though, I think it did push me to delve deeper into the series/lore and have a pretty decent understanding now (I think)! Glad i stumbled over this video though, i think that now i have some better understanding of knowing which games are good, and which aren't. Probably gonna start my Zelda adventures in the matter of days from now on!

    I started with OOT, but I would recommend Link's Awakening or Minish Cap as starting points for new players. Both games take on a more lighthearted tone, and both games have a much smaller scale making them easier to digest for new players who might get overwhelmed by bigger Zelda games.

    My first experience with Legend of Zelda, outside of Smash, was actually the Hyrule Warriors game. I found that to be one of the most fun Zelda experiences I've ever played through, despite the fact that a lot of people say it's trash or it's not canon so its not worth playing. There are definitely canon elements in the game, and as it stands it's one of the more fun Zelda games out there, even if it's not canon. I definitely recommend that game if you're casually interested, and if you're interested in delving into the stories referenced, go into the games that are mentioned in Hyrule Warriors, which would include Skyward Sword, Wind Waker, Ocarina of Time, etc.

  • @ozzi9816
    @ozzi9816 Год назад +2

    From my perspective, the best entry points to the series would be Skyward Sword, Wind Waker, or Ocarina of Time, probably in that order.
    Skyward Sword takes place the earliest in the timeline, meaning story wise it’s easy to follow. Fi is famous for being Navi 2.0, but she does her job and super new players might find the extra handholding welcoming. And of course it’s very pretty.
    Wind Waker is a more open game, but it always gives you a clear next goal to head toward. It gives you that sense of exploration Zelda does best while also guiding you enough so that you never feel lost. If you play the WiiU version you can also still get a decently modern experience.
    Ocarina of Time is, of course, a classic, but even hardcore fans will agree it has its fair share of old game stank and jank that brand new players might not be able to get over (though I think the 3DS version does a lot to address this). It’s the most famous Zelda game for a reason.
    Honorable mention goes to Spirit Tracks because while I like it, it definitely has its more esoteric puzzles (plus some parts that require DS exclusive functions like blowing into the mic), and it’s so different from everything else in the series that it wouldn’t be representative of the “Zelda experience”. Plus being a DS game, the graphics really didn’t hold up

I started by reading the mangas (yes) and watching lore videos, i got in love with the world and then i started playing the older ones in emulator and bought both botw and skyward sword on the switch. It is a great way to get into the games, mainly because staying for a story is more fulfilling than staying for gameplay.

But those were the only two I'd played all the way through until 2022 due to lack of access growing up. A few months ago I decided to play though as many as I could on my twitch stream (shameless plug), and the older ones have been hard to get into as a modern gamer and someone with rather limited experience with Zelda games.

    Before BOTW, my relationship with Zelda was odd… I always wanted to get into the series, but each game I tried I just struggled to solve the puzzles and figure out where to go next and whatnot. But BOTW looked so damn great when it was announced that I absolutely had to get into the series somehow. So I tried abl bunch of the game I already had, and when none of those got me hooked, I went out on a limb and bought Link Between Worlds. Best decision ever. I love that game to death. And then I played BOTW and then the Link’s Awakening remake and those are some of my favorite games ever.
    And now I think I’m finally ready to give the other 3D Zelda’s a shot, so I’m gearing up to play Ocarina of Time and commit to beating it. I’ve played that game many times before, but always got stuck and gave up somewhere along the way. But this time I’m gonna commit. And then I’m jumping straight into Majora’s Mask. I am determined to finally beat these games and fall in love with them.

    My first Zelda game was Majora's Mask, and I absolutely hated it because the timer confused me and I had no idea what to do. I never bothered with the franchise until 2002 when my mom happened to find a completely sealed Collector's Edition for GCN outside. I finally played Ocarina of Time and absolutely adored it because it was much more straight forward, yet open. That same year, Wind Waker was released, so I played it after, and loved it. Finally, I retried Majora's Mask. After learning the Zelda fundamentals, the game made sense to me, and I really enjoyed it. I've been a fan and played all of the main ones since.
    Basically, don't start with Majora's Mask. OoT, Link to the Past, and Wind Waker are the best to start with, imo.

    I got into Legend of Zelda due to botw, though my best childhood friend showed me Twilight Princess on her Wii back in the days.
    However, I only got into it when my now best friend (he's like the annoying little brother I never had) got a switch and botw at release. He didn't gave any Zelda experience before, and I didn't either. I only ever had my DS, and because I easily hyperfixate on things watching my friend play botw as well as watching lets plays and lore videos wasn't enough. So I got phantom hourglass, and 2 years later, when I got my 3ds, Ocarina of Time 3d. Which I still haven't beaten btw, but it's fine.
    For a few years I had kind of a Zelda phase once a year, playing phantom hourglass and OOT3d (and always giving up at one point or the other) I finally got my switch lite in 2021. But even though I frequently borrowed botw and, when I got Nintendo online, tried out alttp, it took until my annual Zelda phase 2022 (technically still going now) that I really took off with the fandom.
    I decided to try out fan fiction again, this time on ao3 instead of the German fan fiction site I used to read on, and in my desperate attempt to find fan fiction that isn't Link x Sidon (I have seen... things. I do want to forget those things...) I stumbled over a webcomic called Linked Universe, in which 9 different Links meet and are on a quest together (You should totally check it out). I joined the Linked Universe discord server. I got Skyward Sword HD.
    I started playing Minish cap and Twilight Princess and windwaker on emulator. (Minish cap works great with a keyboard. Twilight Princess and Windwaker... not). I informed myself even more about the lore. I made friends and started role-playing (my mains are Twilight Princess Link and Skyward Sword Link). I beat Breath of the Wild, then Skyward sword, then, when it came for Nintendo online, Minish cap and finally, after six years of trying, failing and giving up, Phantom hourglass. I also got Spirit Tracks
    I got Totk at release, and I got Hyrule Warriors definitive edition. I met amazing people online and totally wrecked my sleep schedule for them. Then it started to fade as Hyperfixations tend to do after a while, though role-playing kept it alive. I recently got the first two issues of the Twilight Princess manga and that rekindled everything.
    Might have been a rough start, and there are games I might not be able to play currently, but Legend of Zelda is so much more than just playing the games. There are so many talented artists making webcomics like Linked Universe and Linked Maze (also check that out, it's amazing), a really great online community and of course all the lore. Also tons of great fanfictions, just finished reading an awesome novelization of tp tonight (What makes a hero, on fanfiction.com), just be weary of the Link x Sidon stuff, it's everywhere and can get quite disturbing.

    For me the story of each title is more important than the whole "lore" or general canon between every game (and I think Nintendo thinks the same), but I would definitely recommend first Oot if I know the person I'm recommending it has some experience playing games from that era, and THEN follow up with either Majora's Mask or Wind Waker. I think these two are better played after beating OoT, and the three of them are a great entry point for 3D Zelda. However for 2D I would directly tell anyone who has never played to pick up ALBW. Best 2D game of the whole series.

    I'd say Link's Awakening, since 2d is easier to grasp for new players. It's the one that truly solidified the gameplay for all future 2d titles, I'd argue even moreso than ALttP. It also is the first with the kind of characters and story the series is now known for, and it is available in several ways like the recent Switch remake.
    Only issue is going to ALttP after makes that game seem poorly aged in comparison, at least it did for me (like the shield and menus).

    If you got hardcode skill, start with Zelda 1 (feel free to use an online map, since the clues suck), Zelda 3 if you want simple solid gameplay. • @TimTimAwesome
    @TimTimAwesome Год назад +1

    IMO I would start the series off with either Ocarina of Time or Twilight Princess Because they are both linear while also having some open world aspects and it isn't that hard to follow the story. I would have added Wind Waker too but there are a few reason I left it out first being the earth and wind temple sages having to be found and who they are only being implied earlier in the game and being something that can be easily overlooked and I felt that the oceans were lacking and very repetitive. IMO OOT and TP are solid games to start the series with and understand what your getting into with the Zelda Series. Unless you want to start off chronologically then you start with Skyward Sword which I personally wouldn't recommend because of the horrendous motion control based gameplay only being slightly alleviated by the addition of regular controls setting in the switch remaster.

And i can say its a very difficult game series to get into and as the years pass when each game is quite different with almost a whole different playstyle every time while games like mario and pokemon you can easily pick up any game as you probally know how they work but in terms of the best starter game as of 2022 in terms of easy acess i would have to say Twilight princess is probally the best bet for a starter game, The reason why is quite simple. It has a pretty standard map with standard game physics to introduce you to the concept of a zelda game and it can be played on 3 different platforms so its great for that but jeez this comment is long so im not gonna explain much more also congrats for even reading this far
