Great work, thanks for doing this! The way you tell the story of the Fernald's highs and lows is very even-handed and insightful. Your footage of the current state of the campus could be very helpful in drawing attention to this. And you do a great job of explaining the controversies over its reuse and what is still possible.
Beautiful video, interesting at how almost a century of neglect and mistreatment after its initial success finally turned around to its roots. Truly an enjoyable and quality video.
This was incredible. It also goes to say that what you said about a buildings supposed haunting status leading to increased vandalism true at other locations as well. I have said that has been the speed track to vandalism with all the videos out about Norwich State Hospital.
@liamjewell62 yeah and once it's gone it's gone. It's a shame. Alot of vandals too are the same people that swear they're preservationists. It's a mask they hide under. I won't get into names but one was offering a few years back to offer money for the weather vane on top of admin at norwich.
My dad owned a candy distribution company. Back when the school was fully open, every Christmas, he would bring candy over to the school for the residents. He said that it was extremely distressing, depressing and horrifying and left him in tears. The way that these people were treated was beyond belief.
@@liamjewell62 A good part of the 80's is my guess. Even though it was extremely upsetting for him, he never stopped going. I remember him telling me a story about interacting with one of the residents because he was excited about the candy. One of the attendants asked my father why was he bothering talking to the resident because he was stupid and had no idea what my father was saying to him. He knew exactly what my father was saying to him.
I'm going to pretend to be anonymous, yk who I am, Liam. This comment is more for the viewers. The issue I take with the vast majority of videos on the institution - RUclips, TikTok or otherwise - is that they seem to grapple more onto the tragedy rather than the whole picture. The Fernald specifically does not remotely deserve such a narrow view of it's history, since as covered in this video; the institution was innovative and for the majority of it's operation was a positive place. I hope we can get to the point where the institution (and by extension, others) is viewed more accurately like it is described here. P.s. forgive the bad writing, I wrote this at 2:33 AM.
This was wonderfully done, and more complete than I expected. Thank you for telling the story of this property in such a sensitive way.
Thanks! Its really important stuff
Great piece
Thanks!

Yeah, it's really unfortunate. I hear people have come from far and wide specifically to vandalize buildings at Fernald and Norwich

Pls get the pronunciation of your subject name right,
Of" Fernald"? The way I've pronounced it here is how I've heard countless locals pronounce it
Fern-ald is how we all say it 😢
