Willful Neglect Full Documentary: The story of the abandoned Fernald Developmental Center #history
A documentary about the past, present, and future of the now abandoned fernald developmental center: one of America’s most notorious and historically significant psychiatric institutions. A follow-up of sorts to the 2004 documentary front wards, back wards.

Can Linux save this old laptop from obsolescence?
Просмотров 349 тыс.Год назад
Today, I'll be attempting to revive this 16-year-old ThinkPad with Linux. In doing so, I'll try to answer the question: Have computers of this age entered a state of complete obsolescence, or can they still prove useful for everyday tasks when paired with the right operating system? Thanks for watching! Excellent Video by This Does Not Compute that discusses the ThinkPad X61 in-depth: ruclips.n...

Just wanted to put together a short montage of this historic place while I still can, hope you enjoy!
for me if that old laptop can become some local server at home then yea why not, because that laptop uses low power and had huge battery capacity. probabbly less heat and longer performance
My dad owned a candy distribution company. Back when the school was fully open, every Christmas, he would bring candy over to the school for the residents. He said that it was extremely distressing, depressing and horrifying and left him in tears. The way that these people were treated was beyond belief.
I'm curious, do you know what time period he visited?
@@liamjewell62 A good part of the 80's is my guess. Even though it was extremely upsetting for him, he never stopped going. I remember him telling me a story about interacting with one of the residents because he was excited about the candy. One of the attendants asked my father why was he bothering talking to the resident because he was stupid and had no idea what my father was saying to him. He knew exactly what my father was saying to him.
Its biggest enemy would be chrome browser running a RUclips video.
bro 2 gb ram is OK IN 2024. the pc im using now has 2gb and it can do a lot more then you think.
not putting an SSD in, why are you wasting your time. ssd is up to 100 times faster. then max the ram.
from the third world country this is all we have
absolutely nonsense not upgrade the hdd
damn bro chill
Great video, I also think putting Linux on an old machine can save it from the Landfill, as most people do we browsing, office productivity or file managing anyways, not so much gaming and video editing. I bought a thinkpad t500 for 35€ in brand new condition and it's from 2008! It used to be a companies laptop but just sat in storage, now it's running Linux mint and I use it every day
Thanks! I love hearing stories like that lol
I have a 2004 IBM thinkpad I put bhodi linux on. And it works *fine*. It's not fast, but it works, I can play a few old games on it, browse the web, even watch youtube at about 240p.
Easy upgradable to what? 😂 How fast m.2 ssd it supports? How fast ram? What gen CPU?
h264ify extension should give you smooth RUclips playback on low end hardware. Also, you are wrong in saying that there is no point in upping the RUclips quality to a higher resolution than the screen supports, since a higher resolution also affects the bitrate and benefits the image quality.
The problem is that to use the modern internet more or less ok, even with linux, you need a x64 chip, since support for x86 is being dropped everywhere, even browsers.
i still use my X60 for Network analysis
My 14 years old toshiba satellite runs linux mint 21.3 with no problems. Only thing missing is Bluetooth
Know what i mean
I have a shitty laptop who gets very slow, even to edit one simple thing it last 10 minutes to 20 to open a simple program, it is freezing all the time, I cannot buy a new laptop right now so I want to install arch linux to try to revive it until I get a new laptop lol
Arch isn't really worth it imo
r u kidding ? , this is no so much low specs pc. I am struggling with intel celeron 1.7ghz single core single thread cpu
Linux doesnt target old machines anymore like they used to in the 90s. now its all bleeding edge bs, and often are more system heavy than windows.
I get what you're saying, but I think there are still a good number of distros that target (or lat least work well on) older hardware
I had one of these. Gave it away years ago to a buddy that needed a computer. Love the keycaps on that keyboard.
I have a 16 years old pc. Originally it had Windows XP, then 7 and now 10. It can handle office tasks without problems and internet browsing quite decently. I also managed to force it to run Windows 11, and it wan't that bad to be honest. But I would prefer a light Linux distro such as Lubuntu on it.
Tossed a ssd in my hp-2000, 1.6ghz dual core, 3gb ram. Tossed Linux mint on it, and Ubuntu. Works fine for web browsing and office stuff.
Try out AntiX Linux
I am running Xubuntu 22.04 (with latest updates) on an eMachines desktop from 2010.
Beautiful video, interesting at how almost a century of neglect and mistreatment after its initial success finally turned around to its roots. Truly an enjoyable and quality video.
Glad you liked it!
No need to install Linux, I have a 16 year old Asus M70Vm laptop and it has W10pro installed, I have optimized W10pro through many registry tweaks and I have eliminated useless and harmful processes and functions like Edge and it has become fast, it starts quickly and displays full HD videos without any disturbances.
Similar specs. Use "SMPlayer" with RUclips extension. Works great. 720p60fps in NON-Fullscreen mode. Also 1368x768 native res on monitor is WAY Better after changing monitor to 720p resolution. (I don't know why such a big difference.) I'm using regular Mint Cinnamon 21.2.
Man I hate Linux. You should have upgraded to an SSD btw...
Please make a video for HP Compaq 420.
gentoo that beauty up. I bet a -O2 -march=native -flto system would be fast as well. sure you could go gentoo with binary packages as well and only compile some critical ones, since it's an old laptop. 🔥
I really enjoyed the video. Keep going Liam. Btw, what package is the one you're using here: 10:13 i'd like to monitor mi linux laptop specs as well. Thanks!
Nada, obsolete is obsolete. The customers who seek those obsolete ones are either tech geeks and IT students who knows what to do or a broke a hell person who has no knowledge other than old version of Windows.
I have a Dell Latitude e4310 from 2010 I am thinking about doing this to. I did just recently upgrade It to Windows 10 32 bit and I doubled the ram to four gb but I hate the damn Windows watermark and besides, Windows 10 will be outdated soon.
they work all well, rill you go online and start browsing modern websites.
What is the dock app on your xfce desktop? Is it plank?
Pfftf you noob... I'm running Linux lite on an Acer Intel atom netbook 😂
Still using windows 7 with security update in 2024, everything is well integrated and usable for work and more. But I like the way you do.
00:05 Old laptops like ThinkPad x61 can still be useful with the right operating system. 01:38 Older laptops are easily upgradable and can extend their useful life. 03:13 Laptop's hardware limitations dictate choice of operating system. 04:48 Void Linux with xfce desktop environment boosts system performance and customizability. 06:17 Linux on the x61 can handle basic tasks and productivity apps well. 07:57 Old laptop can handle light tasks but struggles with gaming 09:36 Old laptop performs well for basic tasks with lightweight Linux distribution. 11:15 Chromebook pulls ahead in weight, thinness, and battery life.
cool!
What browser are you using I have been wanting to have a browser that doesn't take the entire ram everytime I scroll on Facebook?! What i ended up doing was increasing the size of the swap memory and since web browser ram data is not that much in use It cam move most of it into the swap, but since is a HDD Driveit takes about 10 to 20 senconds to move it back in to the ram and have the web page work.
Why not use 32 bit distro? It will be more efficient memory-wise.
PEPPERMINT MENTIONED!!! I LOVE PEPPERMINTOS SO MUCH
I love my mid 2011 Macbook Air, it is a perfectly usable with Linux despite being less than $100 on the used market these days. It is a genuinely portable laptop even by todays standards, it has a solid keyboard and touchpad, is made of metal and has exceptional build quality because it was quite an expensive computer back then, though as time went on you could really tell the MacBook Air became a budget model. I use it for gaming with Steam link pretty frequently and it is wild to see Cyberpunk 2077 on that 1440x900 display downsampled from 4K on my desktop, and I don't notice any lag either.
I gotta get my hands on an old mac one of these days
I'm watching this video on a 2011 mac book air running kubuntu and honestly, its the greatest experience you get for 40€
It makes me sad that I can't repair my Dell 7470 even tho it's just a psid issue and no motherboards to be found or there way to expensive to repair and it's not worth it
I'm still using my 2013 HP laptop on Arch to this day. But it is considerably more powerful than those laptops you showed on the video. I love how Linux systems still support many cases of older hardware, keeping it relevant to the modern age. In fact, the only thing really keeping these machines "obsolete" is bloated modern web desig making even simple websites require lots of computing power unnecessarily.
can this play original doom?
I live only with a very old Acer Aspire 5250 which is able to run RUclips maximum in 360p, and still with a lot of freezes. I installed Arch Linux on it and decided to use a i3wm without anything (I even deleted status bar from him). I have to use some apps which are available only for Windows 11, but of course when I installed Win 11 on this laptop it was terrible (to open Microsoft Edge it took 3 minutes, even with all disabled services etc). On my Linux OS I installed Wine, and for this moment I can run any Windows software on it with a "perfect" performance. Especially nice it works in Fl Studio 21, so I can write my beats on it. What I would like to say? Linux can help your to run the newest Windows apps on Linux even if you don't have enough power to boot Win 11 on your laptop
I'm going to pretend to be anonymous, yk who I am, Liam. This comment is more for the viewers. The issue I take with the vast majority of videos on the institution - RUclips, TikTok or otherwise - is that they seem to grapple more onto the tragedy rather than the whole picture. The Fernald specifically does not remotely deserve such a narrow view of it's history, since as covered in this video; the institution was innovative and for the majority of it's operation was a positive place. I hope we can get to the point where the institution (and by extension, others) is viewed more accurately like it is described here. P.s. forgive the bad writing, I wrote this at 2:33 AM.
just went here didn’t realize how fucked it was I knew of it but not like this
"Can Linux save this old laptop from obsolescence?" We'll never know because that extra RAM you added definitely will lol.
Running the smaller brother X61s upgraded to 4GB as my daily driver with Archlinux. 🙂
nice!
