I lived in a drafty camper for 2 high elevation years while building my offgrid home. The best thing i had was a 12 volt electric blanket that i placed under the sheets. It draws about 30 watts continuous power which is tolerable and you dont run the risk of waking up dead. That was 25 years ago. Time sure flies.
You're so right about sleeping on an air matress; it must transfer cold air, because it's cold to sleep on one. That's great you can sleep well in there on the foam pads.
Definitely get a Porta potty. I have camped on every level and I also have a little buddy heater for my truck top camper and a pillow type insulation cut out would work for condensation
That’s my all time favorite heater. I slept in my truck for a month in NY winter and that heater kept me alive. I went through three 20 lb propane tanks.
Mr Heaters Buddy Heaters are catalytic and thus cannot produce co2. A little fresh air doesn't hurt, because too little oxygen will cause it to turn off. But they are perfectly safe for inside use. People treat them like they are time bombs and if that were true there would be warning labels all over the box. They left one run for 24 hr straight in a hot tent and co2 detector never went off
Thanks so much for this video! I also have a 1st gen 01’ and I love your setup. My step-dad and I are going to build the bed up this summer based off how you have yours. Your videos are super informative and fun to watch. Thanks again! - Steve from Kansas
@@coreychampley148 I did a few experiments on blankets. Being a Sat. diver blankets are a thing. It can't produce static, it must be light weight because of all our gear and the amount of it. To cut to the chase I discovered the cheapo blankets at Walmart for $3. Something sewn together are perfect down to 20 below. I lay on one and cover with two. They are fire resistant won't create static and weigh nothing. I buying 6 more today. If you build a PVC frame you can make a tiny shelter inside and survive 40 below with ease.
I just ordered the larger size heater and also the small one and a vent hatch and a CO detector. Oh yeah and a 9.5" DVD player. I'm going on a road trip/ camping for 2 months as soon as I finish building and setting it up. I have a 32' RV but this looks far more fun and simpler.
@@ConnorLee I use to take one offshore with me. I was WAS a commercial diver on the platforms and those movie players come in handy when you can't sleep.
i think netting around the sides and maybe ceiling could help with storage accessibility, considering your seasonings are in an out of reach place when your cab bed is closed.
I’ve actually just got my hands on a diesel heater which I’m currently trying to figure out how to power and then I’ll give that a whirl in the truck camper. It’s a dry heat as well so it should deplete all of the condensation. One downside is I’ll have to carry some diesel as opposed to your idea running it from the trucks fuel tank. That would be really neat too!
I have a decked system and I sleep on top of that and when I wanna cook I just exit the back or sit on my pad but if I’m with my gf I’m outside because usually we’ll get our day started and sit by the fire in the am
@@ConnorLee I hope to start doing truck camping myself pretty soon. I plan to build my own small camper. But for now my videos just consist of weekend warrior trailer camping.
Another good video! I may have to stop watching your videos because I’m starting to imagine myself truck camping🏕 …😂. If there’s ever a zombie apocalypse, I guess you are going to be just fine. 🤣😂. Merry Christmas!
I’ll usually crack the back window and one screened window. That way it creates some movement. I keep an carbon monoxide detector in there with me and have never had an alarm. Use at your own risk for sure. Be safe friend!
Your build looks awesome. The buddy heater gives out too much condensation and the Co2 it could give off is dangerous. Get yourself a Jackery Lithium Ion battery and use an electric blanket. It will be dryer and you will keep warm. Plus, you could get a low output electric heater if it was too cold for you.
Hi Conner, I happened to come across your vid. I've been truck camping since the 80's. It looks like you've got a pretty good set up there. I might suggest you get a small fan to circulate the warm air in your rig. You can check out camping stores in your area, they will have what you need, but it'll be expensive. Wally World does ok. You're going to find that you will add & detract what you need as time goes on. There is no right way. There is no wrong way. There is only 1 way, YOUR WAY. Thanks for sharing, drive safe. 🤠
You should have done a first burn while you’re outside of the truck, just so you don’t have to inhale all the oils that are on the heater while the heater is in the box.
Yes this thing definitely takes no time at all to heat up this little topper. Might consider downsizing on the heater since extra space is always a hot commodity in the truck bed camper! Cheers!

Honestly still a great go to 25 years later. We’re lucky with the gear we have now but you have to be smart about how you use it
You're so right about sleeping on an air matress; it must transfer cold air, because it's cold to sleep on one. That's great you can sleep well in there on the foam pads.
It’s no memory foam mattress, but it sure is comfy for a truck bed haha!
Insulated air pad like backpackers use are very warm. Some are down filled & have an Rvalue of 7

Dang! What a beast
Did you sleep with the heater on all night

You need a carbon monoxide detector not carbon dioxide detector. The former is a deadly poison gas.
That might be why it didn't go off. CO vs CO2

Thanks for watching and good luck on your build! It was a fun father son project for me and my dad. Hope you enjoy the process!
An easy bathroom fix is a 5 gallon bucket, a bucket toilet seat from Amazon, a plastic grocery or trash bag, and some sawdust!
Not wrong about that at all! Would make a nice porcelain throne for truck camping!
You need to watch a video on how to properly season your cast iron....makes all the difference.
The Tacoma is awesome ! It looks really comfortable in my opinion =)
I love these Camping Videos, keep them coming ;)
Greetings Jan
Don’t have to ask me twice!
Great videos man! I have the same Tacoma and loving your build
Use wool blankets and plastic sheeting for insulation 🤠😉

I like the camping setup and enjoyed the video! I'm a throwback viewer from the f30 days.
So cool to have you around OG! Thanks for watching Ryan
Nice truck and love the set up your awesome
Thank you!
Insulate the shell with reflectex (?) and cover with boat carpet, or just use boat carpet. For condensation problem.
Ended up doing just that! Thanks!
Hi there I just love your videos your amazing
Thanks!
An answer to the condensation issue is diesel heater. Gives dry forced air heat. The flocking makes a difference as well
I’ve thought about this. You think it’s a better option versus a buddy heater?
@@ConnorLee Yes
Update: I saw one of your newer videos. You upgraded to a diesel heater, good move,

i think netting around the sides and maybe ceiling could help with storage accessibility, considering your seasonings are in an out of reach place when your cab bed is closed.
That is a dilemma. I was thinking about cutting a second hatch above the drawer to have inside access but the netting could be a move.
Really enjoyed viewing the video. Nice job!
Thank you!
You were watching Mrs. Doubtfire lol
Yessir hahah
You may want to consider a cab heater! They run on your vehicles fuel tank !.vary efficient with no humidity except you breath

I didn't want to be the one to bust 420 👍! Cast iron will last a lifetime.
Ic all you have is the back window cracked is that enough ventilation do you Crack the front window of the truck too

Those heaters are safe indoors

Your heater is too big for your setup. Ideally you need the Mr. Heater Portable Buddy Heater. Much smaller version perfect for your truck.

Go diesel heater ... skip the carbon monoxide
Agreed!
