I live in Poland. Here we have cement, bricks, and asfalt everywhere. Some decades ago there was much more green, but it changed so quickly. Now we have unnatural heat in every city, because politicians and civils chopped so many trees and brush, that in many places there are no cooling shadows, no water retention, no humanity, no birds... It hurts me to know that so much beauty was lost. I pray for African countries - may your people be wise, and don't let the "modern" way of thinking steal what you already have! 🥰
In the US, when the housing industry began to make money, they advertised that "dirt poor people live in dirt houses" because people still had farmhouses made from earthen material. This was a deliberate campaign to shame people into buying prefab houses from cheap material. My mother told me about how nice the earthen houses were during the early 1900s.
I used to live up north in Canada, in a first nations community in northern Saskatchwan. After however long of being messed around, they were starting to work with the Dené elders to restore the traditional way of life - they had courses for the kids and teens to go out and run traplines, ice fishing, all that sort of thing. In my own city, the first nations bands do traditional hunting and learning how to cook the traditional foods (bannock is 💖 I love it) and making the tipis and other forms of traditional housing. My cousin's ex wife is Soto first nations from the west coast, and she taught us how to make dreamcatchers, and told us that their tradition was that they're gifts, not for sale, tho obviously ppl do it bc they need the money to live on. A lot of these traditions were stamped out and have had to be relearned but hopefully with enough support, indigenous people everywhere can hold their heads up and live on *their* terms, not someone else's. We don't need all this constant wastage and excess. We're just told we do.
@@risemahadeva I live in Europe now, and we're saving to build a house here so we can make it as green as possible (heat pump, solar and wind power, all that stuff). Then we're no longer at the mercy of the petroleum industry, nor the govt if it decides to keep being stupid (UK). We'll have a garden and stuff like that, so more food we like that we can grow ourselves without too much fuss. We've done similar small scale garden projects that ended up with us having to give the produce away bc there was too much, just from a simple balcony garden. Tomatoes, beans, peas, potatoes, would have had grapes but it was the wrong season to plant, but live and learn, right? We had some carrots and onions, but the bugs and birds... 🤷
I am from India and I think i will feel like home totally in africa. I don't know what connection is there but man we are so similar! I would love to be there girl.
I once made a bowl out of a half coconut when I was around 14 years old. I still have it and occasionally use it and I feel a certain connection with it that I have not with the items I have bought or that have been gifted to me. I can understand the proud this man must feel for having an entire house made by himself. That's some next level appreciation right there.
I don’t think it’s the house that makes it special, it’s the people and learning and self care. But, houses like this did not continue in Europe and North zamwrican because the climate. Totally different climate, way more mold, way more wet. That said parents teaching gardening and life skills I think would be a big improvement here in the US.
White Americans tradition is cultural and socioeconomic oppression , oh and genocide. Y’all have no real morals or values. Look how she gets on the floor to greet her father. They have so much respect for elders and the family. Y’all could never.
@@psychzone494Lmao! You really think so? My family has built a farm passed down generations. You think I want genocide? Hell no but we are the fuck around and find out country. Long line of hard working get your hands dirty Americans.
Honestly whenever I see beauty in design like this it’s just breathtaking and everything is so - like natural it feels like when you walk into a nice cool shade spot visually
But this, clearly, is complex as well. I understand what you mean, though. The obsession with fixing things that aren’t broken can make our culture worse sometimes.
The reason "western" countries live like that is the consumption wanted by few people who make mountains of money because of their madness and superiority feeling. Who should all stop these economics groups that lead our lives and make people eat poison, live stressed lives, ...They do this in the name of democracy but they truly don't mind : in Irak they wanted oil, not the democracy, they let the palestinian children starving and dying... Our culture have this superiority feeling that is and have been the more dommageable issue in this Earth
I think that applies to American Culture. We’re all mixed and have lost our roots while cultures in Europe and Africa have rich culture and are more traditional. This happens when multiples cultures try to live together. Not saying people should go back to their mother land, just telling the truth. Europeans thought it would be cool to allow other people to live with them just to complain (not all) about it later.
It's so beautiful. I am a wood person and love antique and vintage things. To hear about nature made things makes me excited. I love the details about the make of the hut. And to see the detail work, wow. That roof and everything else is so well put together and immaculate. If I lived there, I would definitely be contacting you to have your father construct the building of my home. He is knowledgeable, what a gift. I love small homes. Your traditional home is beautiful. 🙏🏽💖
This is the most well built home. My favorite is the floor. Your grass thatched house is all natural. That mohagamy door, WOW! This is the exactly how humans remain grounded, receive energy from Earth, and pure oxygen for our lungs. Asante 🌄🌍🌙
The door and windows are beautiful. I'd love to have them as part of my house. And that roof. Wow! What craftsmanship. I wonder how many hours went into creating it. I can just imagine falling asleep under such a roof when it's raining outside.
This is extremely beautiful. Joy, you have an amazing relationship with Dad/family. Thank you for inspiring us to preserve our African culture. I pray the Most High Yah gives me the opportunity to visit. May He continue to bless and protect us.
This house is lovely. The thickness of the walls and dense stack of the roof thatch- everything in it is artisanal and lovely craftmanship. I need to experience the temperate tranquility of an earthen house someday ❤ Also, I love how you and your father had such fluidity to your conversation. Thank you for sharing the history, craftsmanship, and a peek at your family with us ❤❤
I study architecture and this is beyond inspiration, I am glad too see you dad saw beauty in African structure 😍😍😍, I love the materials are naturally and locally resourced and they are biodegradable
I study material and color concepts in architecture and this made so happy. People pay a massive amount of money in europe to get clay and lime walls installed. I love seeing people being more interested in old durable architecture techniques.
Beautiful video ❤, I cried throughout the video because it reminded me of home,of my late grandparents, may God rest their souls. Your house looks almost like our houses only with wider entrances/exits and most of our houses' roofing is grass . Please give your father a hug for me,thank you and your father for this video ❤❤❤❤❤.
You have such a beautiful, we'll made and "intelligent" house. Everything works together with nature to get comfort and what you need, not against it as we do most of the time in modern cities. All the best to you and your family!
Beautiful home. You father did a lovely job explaining how and why the house was built the way it is. ❤️. Thank you for sharing such valuable information.

Your house is beautiful, and so are you and your video! May you continue to be proud of your traditional local innovations for your local needs. I have visited Kinkiizi in SW Uganda and discovered what a stunning country you have, and the people are joyful. Thank you this video, if we all lived so sustainably the world would not have such problems. God bless you!
The construction reminds me of adobe homes in the southwest US. My children's great-grandfather made his home from adobe, and it was cool in the summer despite temperatures being over 100f, and it stayed warm in the winter. This video showed me how alike we are rather than differences, so that's fascinating to me.
I love the "if it ain't broke, dont fix it!" type mentality so many of your videos have ❤ it's so important to consider nature and culture in the decisions we make and its so refreshing to finally see that
I enjoy your channel so much! You have a wonderful way of sharing the different aspects of your life with us, and I especially enjoy learning about your life in your village! Also, what a beautiful hut!! The craftsmanship is fantastic ❤
Everything has a reason behind it. We have a lot of lime stone houses in the south of our country. The climate is perfect for it and they are decorated with the dying out Sgraffito technique. But here in the north the climate is shitty, thanks to pollution, sour rain (thanks to throwing salt whenever it snows) and other geographical reasons.
Crazy how we've moved to concrete houses and abandoned the clay grass thatched houses. We can borrow some things from morden houses to implement in the traditional houses for longterm use without frequently having to apply the clay. And yes, homestay hosting is a good idea.
