I literally just arrived to Mauritania from the USA and am astonished with the relaxed atmosphere. Family plays a huge role and neighbors, teachers, coaches are all ready to help. It's been a relief and a fresh breath of air for us. We feel not only welcome but at peace here.

I'm Berber and love the people of West Africa. Because I was born and raised in the west I always felt like I was missing something. When I visited Senegal and The Gambia I felt nostalgia for things that never happened. There were Mauritanians there too and all were very kind and treated me like family. I'm sorry that some Berbers treated you bad, I had no idea the term berber was used in Gambia for someone who was cruel.

Watched this doco 2 times. I clearly see the content difference between the normal and Western point of view about Africa (not first time but at this time I confirm my hypothesis) . I watched a story of the same city, Nouakchott shot in 1 or 2 years apart. The white guy showed a very poor town where people are struggling to survive. Here I see a thriving city with considerable modern experience and charm. Guys, we are not that poor. I will never understand why anything connected to Africa is made to look poor and hopeless. Keep it up Mauritania, you are doing so good.

    • @truecynic1270
      @truecynic1270 Месяц назад +10

Yes! Excellent point. A Nigerian pharmacist once told me that Westerners video the poor elements ONLY to continue the notion of Africa being incapable, under educated, backwards always to need help ....................when in actuality the cities and most areas are very modern, well-educated and Prosperous. Of course, every culture has its differences but basically Africa in its entirety is NOT impoverished nor living in the past....................

Maybe because 80% of the population is hungry ... Look at the GDP of these regions of the world before you want to put a positive vision in it. This is not a representation! It is the reality. If the Africans provide you with a clean and rich vision of their countries that’s fine! but what is the reality? the hope is there we all agree, their education and culture are a model... but economically it is not the golden coast ... you must remain lucid and do not put glitter everywhere either

There is a lot of racism in Muritania, The first time I met a Mauritanian was in New York City and he was part of the political fighters for freedom for Black people. He mentioned things that was profound to me. He said that there was slaves in present day, modern Mauritania, and these slaves happen to be black Africans I feel that’s a shame. I feel that has to change. I feel that africans have to wake up in general and unite. I just feel like more needs to be done.

Mauritania is one of the least visited countries in Africa. Why?
1.) Outside of Africa it’s questionable that people know it even exist.
2.) If people do know of it, they know it through media stories of modern day slavery
    3.) underdevelopment & poor infrastructure
4.) Many western countries label it as an unsafe destination.
5.) language. Unless you speak one of the national languages, Hassaniya, Soninke, Pulaar, Wolof ect or possible French, it may be quite challenging for you to visit.
These are possible reasons for why it’s amongst the least visited countries in Africa.

I'm a turkish/armenian guy living in the US, before I came here I was thinking that I was white. Then I lived here and realized being "white" is a statement and it's cultural , I am not white here although my skin is white. So if the whites who lives in mauritania goes to europe they will end up second class. No one is better than anyone except being superior in ilm, the knowledge in my eyes. But reality is different all around the world.
I was sick of travelers from western countries who sugarcoats everything and make it look like more important then it is. It's the culture here, "what I do is veeery important " attitude, which I am sick of. Good journalism on showing what is really the essence of that train ride. I wouldn't do it for sure.

in the United Stares you are classified as white. All of North Africa, the Middle East, East Europe and Mediterranean are white in America. Check the census you will see. Yall are of European descent.

Turkish and Armenians are legally white, just like Italians, Egyptians, Greeks and Algerians. Legal is all that matters in the US

@@beyourself2444Italians and Greeks are Europeans so of course they're white. Northern Italians are blondes and red heads
      So arabs are considered white?

It's sick and twisted and cruel but Blk people haven't figured out how to address it and resolve it so it continues and it will continue possibly till melanated or heavily melanated people are extinct. I was in Morocco a few months ago, and we drove very close to the border with Mauritania on a trip we had booked. I yearned to go there for some reason, and I keep coming back to watch videos on that part of Africa that really pulls me in. Hopefully next year I'll be able to adventure into this wonderful country,

Thank you so much for this. I spent two years living in Nouakchott and also traveled to many other parts of the country, including Terjit and Chinguetti. I even have a picture in Chinguetti of the same man, a librarian of the manuscripts, who was there when I met him in 2003.
All in all, and excellent video. I am happy to have discovered it.

The transatlantic slave trade is one of the biggest crimes ever perpetuated on humanity, but the cultural impact of Islamic slavery (ongoing) has a lot to answer to for in this country and we shouldn’t shy away from that because it can sound offensive.
