May I intervene as a 53 year old voice of wisdom? The youngsters don't get Dave because of time. Back in the day, his attitude was cutting edge. Today, he seems tame. Yet, not then. Thus, we have the generational gap that hits every generation. In other words, Dave was way ahead of his time and time morphed him into being just another guy on the street, on the radio, on tv as in, today. Back then? His style of humor was basically outrageous. Pioneering. The accident you wanted to rubberneck half the time. He lit up tv like it was never lit up before. I understand that half of you have no clue as to what I speak. But, I'm telling you, when he burst on the scene, he was unlike anything anyone dared. Madonna at her height and him basically telling her she was a joke? He was the first real ballsy guy on tv that ever was. He ignored all the previous "tv rules" and went after truth. End of story and he was first.

The only talk show host that was Dave's equal was his mentor, Johnny Carson. Dave had an edge to him that no one else has ever approached. His effortless response to the inane things some of his guests came out with always left me laughing and in awe of his intellect.

Heisenberg Robin William's did, 50 times over and plenty more in his early standup career before David was even on The Late Show. He's a smart guy but don't forget that, even to David, William's improvisational skills and priceless humor transcended genius to a point where pretty much everyone just let him have the floor no matter where he was.

This was a nice compilation of Letterman's work, poignant when the new generation of late night talk show hosts bid good-bye to David. I would stay up, even on school nights, when I began watching his show in high school. The show started at 1235. It was a treat when he moved to CBS and was on an hour earlier, gave way to those khaki beige pants and hi-tops. It's nice to know that his brilliant work paid off. Some would say he was the 2nd best late night TV host behind Johnny Carson, but David was on late night TV for 33 years, became a terrific interviewer, idolized by awkward teenagers that grew older with him and gave hope to many fans. For fans like myself, look at his work from 1999 till he had the quadruple by-pass. After the surgery he looked like he got his energy and color back for what turned into a stellar 14 year run. He solidified his legacy as tops in his field in my book.

Dave was Johnny´s pick for replacement on the Tonight Show. That didn´t happen. What did happen was Johnny calling Dave more than quite often to trade ideas before Dave´s show. I believe this took place more than two or three times a week. Probably up until Johnny´s passing. Jack Paar, Johnny Carson & David Letterman. This is what history will show.

Paul on Keyboard was cool as ever.
It was sort of like Dave was playing out some wet dream fantasy.
