David. You’re one of the few artists that actually teach the techniques step by step indicating and stressing each details. So, I have to thank you very much for all your amazing tutorials.
As a beginner artist trying to learn comic style art, this is the most useful video for hair. Showing how you start out blocking in shapes really helped me get started. Thank you!
Breaking down one of the most difficult things to draw in such a clear and understandable way! Thanks David, I need to practice this a ton. It is so helpful to be equipped with knowledge like this.
As the visually impaired artist, I really appreciate how you explain things and zoom in when you need to. That really helps me grasp the detail that is needed. Thank you very much!
You're welcome! Keep pushing....it's so hard to do all the things you need to in order to get there, but it's absolutely worth it. And doing that work right away puts you light years ahead of anyone that won't
Aaaaaamazing! You give a wonderful breakdown of the technique. I’ve been drawing for 35+ years. This is the BEST Instructor I’ve ever found. Finally I can get some of those trickier items down! Woot! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 thank you!
I love your work on ultimate x-men. The stand-alone issue 41 still stands as one of the best x-men i've ever read. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on youtube.
I’ve been binging on these videos the last couple of days. Amazing content. It’s like watching a magician revealing his tricks. Only obvious when you know how it’s done.
She looks amazing ☺️ Thank you for another great tutorial! Your hair always looks great on your drawings, now I know how to do so ☺️ Cheers and have a great day!
I must have watched this series a few times and still find it inspiring while I work on my practice sketches. I still find it funny how people see it as a magic trick when I draw something so fast.
Thanks for your clarity and the pauses to illustrate your terminology with the small side sketches. I also appreciate the advice to "erase and try it again" since the illusion of a finished drawing is that it was made with no mistakes in one continuous (and magically perfect) pass.
The first video I’ve seen like this. I’m more interested in sketching. I work in colored pencils these days but the most money I’ve made was in the sketch, which was years ago. I want to get back to the basics to the beginning. Sketching portraits was my first love, but I got burnt out. Took me 5 years to get back to my beloved art. For me art is a need, not a want. It’s like food. Anyway I want to thank you so sincerely for these tutorials.
@@DavidFinchartist It is simple, but it's easy to miss if there's no name for it. It's a nice name, too. You also mentioned "opening a window" in the hair, I believe, to show layering / depth. Another winner.
I’m not really a comic style artist as far as my drawings go, but your step-by-step breakdowns and tutorials for composition and shading of everyday things are soo helpful. I’ve been practicing and trying to apply them to my daily drawings and doodles. Love your channel and love your work. 🔥🙌🏻
I noticed that the way u hold your pencil to sketch is higher (close to middle of the pencil) whereas i usually hold mine lower closer to the tip. Probably a bad habit of mine that i need to fix to be able to get flowy n smooth steady lines like you. Thank you for the awesome tutorials!
Thanks David for making this! Just wondering if we can have a video where you flip through some comics you have worked on and just talk through how you approached it or some behind the scenes commentary- idea from Sheldon in the discord just voicing it!
Just wanted to say a thank you for always listening to us and trying to fit in videos based off of our reccomendations and questions! Really helps and I still can’t believe that it’s _the_ David finch haha!
Hi David Thanks for letting us all watch you work. The Knowledge your passing on in your videos is priceless....In regards to drawing Hair have you seen the book by Jack Hamm Drawing the head and Figure there is a section called The Natural fall of Hair. I found it extremely helpful in understanding the way behaves. Thanks again Dave cant wait to see more.
I like how your videos are in real time and not spead up. It helps me grasp what you are talking about better. Keep up the good work! One question about drawing hair, could you do a video about drawing short curly hair? That's a hard one for me to get right. I know it's not the typical hairstyle in comics. Thanks in advance.
Been Drawing For Years And Yes (female) Hair Is Still A Challenge For Me But On The Other Hand That's What Keeps Drawing And Creating Interesting. Since I Follow David And Watch Him Draw Focused I Noticed I'm Making Progress. So Thanks David. 🤘🔥😊
How do you ink the hair, cus like drawing it isn’t as hard when you get used to it but when you like ink hair mostly if the hair is just black and moves around, the hair looks just flat
For me, it was too. Organic forms are such a challenge until you get the flow, and unfortunately there's no way I'm aware of to shortcut it, other than to know what to avoid. It's totally doable and very easy though...just give it time
Omg thank you!! I was waiting for a video on this topic. I hope some time you can make a video just roughing out a tonne (or a few but in more detail) of different hairstyles on both males and females
I did some other hairstyles and it ended up being an hour and a half long....I'm tring to figure out how to get the other stuff out there now. And thanks!
David Finch that sounds amazing! Thanks so much. I was also wondering: when you’re drawing, do you draw your light source as an arrow or indicate it at all like you often do for your videos? Or do you just infer where the light source is given your experience?
Have you thought about teaching a complete online course live on how to draw comics via Zoom? From anatomy, foreshortening and perspective to buildings and stages and monsters?

That’s why all my figures are bald, male and female.
I literally break down in stress if I can't draw something correctly
As the visually impaired artist, I really appreciate how you explain things and zoom in when you need to. That really helps me grasp the detail that is needed. Thank you very much!
"I've basically got a hair line." I'm jealous, I'm bald. Lol
Richard Dunn well don’t be, David is bald too lmao
Haha, yeah.....I can relate with that. At least I can draw a hairline...
You’re the best artist man. Thanks for the tutorial! Greetings from Connecticut lol
Grettings from Guatemala, David. This tutorial will help me a lot
I'm so glad! Greetings back!
This was a much needed tutorial. When I draw longer hair, from certain angles, they look stiff like playmobil hair wigs...
Thank you David
Glad it was helpful!
The way you always interpret the HAIR in your characters is absolutely beautiful sometimes amazing. You the best David…!!!
I wait until the end or a portrait drawing to draw hair detail, and it's always a lot more work than I anticipated. It takes a lot of patience.
You can always tell a Silvestri-trained artist by their hair. :D This is awesome, Dave! Thanks!
forgive my ignorance, what does Silvestri-trained mean?

I always think of hair in ribbons being twisted, hanging and draping over shoulders and then adding a couple thin strands flowing with the ribbon.
