When I was about 9 - 10 years old, everyone in the class had to do a speech - in front of the class - about a chosen subject. Mine was the Hindenburg Disaster. Some 30 years later, I find myself working on a new airship at Lakehurst (where the Hindenburg Disaster occurred) having my photo taken at the Hindenburg Memorial. So no, I noticed it immediately.

Rammstein packed almost 23 centuries of German history in a 9 minutes music video. So no wonder it's fully packed with symbols and allusions that every German understands while the lyrics describe the ambivalence every native German feels about loving and hating the German (and so even their own) roots.

    • @Searover749

Many europeans understand too (no need of the lyrics : the symbols talk).
We learn our history at school (without chauvinism), unlike US.
Everyone in the world should know that, as an example of what to do, or not to do.
Not knowing that history, it is now repeating, in many countries,
with different forms, and it turns to global catastrophy.

    • @donchillow527
      @donchillow527 3 года назад

@@hansauger3460 I think, that the barbarism really just started when the romans came and we got converted to christianity. This is the time where suddenly women who had equal rights and were respected became hunted when they were smart or not just used as birthing machines (like supposed in roman christianity). Women were elected clan leaders by the tribes in our "barabaric times". Things changed when christianity was ruling ... there is a reason their time of rule is called "the dark ages".
Healers were also only allowed to be women in the old german culture (cause they were the ones giving life), for christians, they then were witches and needed to be killed, just cause they themselfs didn't know how to process local berries and mushrooms to not be poisonous.
The roman katholic church was doing what it could best, strip women from rights and freedoms and start wars to enrich themselfs ... like they do, since they exist.
I'm not talking about christs message here but if you do the reasearch you will find out what the romans did to that message when they decided to write the bible and propagate their own religious rules as "christianity" ...i.e. killing everyone who had a version of the bible petrus wrote, cause it had too much rules that would not have been accepted by romans (it is all written in historic letters from the pope).

This vid is taking you through several events in Germanys history, with Rammstein's own twist in it. German actress Ruby Commey appears as Germania throughout the video.
"Germania" is the Latin name of the country called "Deutschland" in the spoken language of its own inhabitants, though used as the country's name in various other languages, such as "Germany" in English. In the country itself, the use of the Latin "Germania" was mainly literary and poetical, linked with patriotic and nationalist feelings
Germania as personification is usually depicted as a robust woman with long, flowing, reddish-blonde hair and wearing armour. She often wields the Reichsschwert (imperial sword), and possesses a medieval-style shield that sometimes bears the image of a black eagle on a gold field.

I'm from Germany so let me give you some thoughts from someone who's born here. First of all, first time I watched the video I was shocked and deeply moved. The song/ video takes a very deep look into our german souls and how most of us feel about our country. It's a love- hate- relationship. The video is loaded with tons of symbols, that as a German you catch onto.
Let's start: in the intro you see Germania ( Personification of Germany) during roman/ germanian tribes time.
The red Lazer represents the "red thread" of the story/ history.
Astronauts from the future bringing Germania in a glass coffin (snow-white) so she can lead through the/her german history.
Next you observe the twenties(Weimar Republic). The prison scene representing the rough, violent times especially for the majority of the population struggling to survive. Money raining down/ the great depression. And Germany's first try as a democratic state. In between Germania is dressed in knight's armor awaking her knights/band with the Lazarus spear.
Next Germania is pushed in a wheelchair by the band through the Berlin Holocaust Memorial with burning bodies.
Next vignette the office scene showing east Germany and west Germany reunited (1989).
Then you're being taken back to mideveal times, monks/ church are feasting off of Germania. In most scenes you'll see some church man involved. No coincidence.
The concentration camp scene in the background you see V2 rockets ignition. The inmates are wearing different types of stars on their chests and a sign on the gallows reads: no photos. Germania wears an eye-patch first on her left, than on her right eye.
Than a quick shot of Germania dressed modern with lots of gold leading german shepherds., representing Germany's wealth.
The 70's scene shows the RAF- extremists holding Germania/ Germany hostage.
Next vignette is the witch burnings shifting to the book burning. If you have a close look, at minute @ you see a church man holding up a cross hugging a Nazi, symbolising the churches over all position to the horrific events happening during 1933-1945.
The birth scene. Germania is giving birth to dogs respectively "Leonberger" a breed preferred by Kings and Queens. The Breed almost went extinct during WW1 and WW2. A cardinal helping (dressed in red) a new Germany being born.
At minute @ you see the riots against refugees homes in the 90's in Hoyerswerda. Molotovs are being thrown and a car is being pushed over with the help of a man dressed in Nazi uniform.
Than the scenes/ time vignettes start shifting faster and faster, showing how many times, when circumstances becoming to extreme everything is falling apart and Germania ( dressed in knight's) armor is crying.
The outro is the piano version of the song "Sonne" which completed how we feel thinking of our past: a sense of sadness.
To sum it up. Germany has a long, wild, violent, unique history, because we as a state of today exist only since 1989. Yet the roots go back a very long time. "Young and yet so old" I hope that helped a little to understand the video and with that us Germans. We don't have a strong feeling of patriotism, but a strong sense of unity. It's complicated.
With love from Germany 🤘 😎

I don't hate my country, I love America, the country and traditional values, but I do not love that which is trying to undo those values. History is meant to keep us repeating it, yet so many want to look back upon it with the wrong mind and allow their emotions to get in the way of the lesson. And like the slave owners who forced their hardship onto another race for profit, today's "ancestral victims" are doing the same and demanding whites pay their way in life pretending it's about a nobler cause. How can it be noble if $$$$ is all that's demanded? The very thing they claim is the root of all evil when the argument benefits them.

Each and every single cut to another scene in this mini-movie represents one different aspect of German history. Often times the people in the scenes go even one layer deeper by alluding not only to very specific historic instances, but also the setting and specific background info. Often these are linked to parts of the lyrics that are sung right at this moment in the video, either by Till as the main voice, or by Richard in the background. Sometimes the cuts are even timed to focus on different words of one and the same stanza line, with several cuts for each individual word or phrase.
That's how insanely deep this video goes.
Let's take apart the very first scene:
Germania Magna was the Latin name of the area that was inhabited by lots of different Germanic tribes with somewhat similar languages and cultural backgrounds.
This was also the only written record as these tribes did not have an active written language themselves, so all records come from the ancient Roman conquerors, tainted by their own perceptions.
The ancient Romans had conquered roughly half the area of what is currently modern day Germany, and settled the 'barbarian' tribes there under Roman law and rule. They invaded along the major rivers of the Danube and the Rhine, branching off along the Mosel and the Main rivers, as well as smaller rivers. Basically anything that could be reached directly by Roman galleys had been conquered, starting from the west and south, with a short excursion from the north. The disparate barbarian tribes had little to nothing to set against the numerically, tactically, and strategically superior Roman legions. So, in modern terms, they were outmanned, outgunned, out-everythinged, basically.
The term 'barbarian' also comes from that time, because it means a "person with a beard" in Latin. You know, the same origin for the word "barber"?
That also was tainted by the ancient Roman perception: being clean shaven was a long standing tradition among ancient Romans. Anyone any sporting facial hair, often wearing animal skins or pelts was considered at the least too poor to afford a regular barber's shave, at worst willfully crude and uncivilized. So the tall, bearded, Germanic tribes with their strong traditions of animalistic and totemic religions, wearing untreated animal skins representing their fierce prowess in combat, were pretty much the anti-thesis of the ancient Romans.
The Varus Battle (presumed in the Teutoburg Forest, but that is still contended) in 9 AD was the single worst defeat of the Roman armed forces in the entire history of ancient Rome, right smack dab in the middle of their golden glorious period. That was an absolutely devastating blow as two whole legions, plus a siginificant portion of a third legion was completely wiped out by Arminius (Armin or Hermann, depending on the translation).
He was an ex-Roman slave who had been given legionary training in the Roman mercenary corps, but had returned to Germania Magna after his release. He unified multiple Germanic tribes in a treaty that had until then been warring continuously among themselves, weakening themselves so much that they had been eaten in small, nice, bite-sized chunks by the Roman forces. With this unification of three, some say even more tribes, Arminius/Herman/Armin succeeded at outpacing and outsmarting the Roman legions by turning his legionairy knowledge he gained from his training against the Romans. The battle lasted for more than three days, sometimes straight through the night. This was a tactic completely unheard of among the Romans. Also Roman legions didn't usually fight among trees or in boggy areas, as their heavy armor and weapons made them vulnerable there.
Arminius used these three facts against the Romans, by sending skirmishing assaults of small groups of tribal warriors against the Romans in guerilla strikes. This kept the Romans awake for three days straight, while Arminius only used small amounts of his forces in rotation, allowing the rest to sleep in shifts.
Once the devastatedly tired Romans tried to break out of the boggy forest areas, he struck against stragglers, eroding the morale even more. This resulted in a rout, and spreading of the legions along long lines of fleeing small groups which were then wiped out consecutively.
From a purly military standpoint, Arminius was a military genius. From a humanitarian standpoint, he was a sadist. But that was common among soldiers of that time, among all warring peoples.
In 16. AD the Roman general Germanicus started a punitive expedition to the northern Germanic tribes, but couldn't find many survivors. He mostly found the remants of the legionaries brutally murdered and ritualistically sacrificed to the Germanic tribes' gods and totems. Often times the heads had been severed and nailed or tied to trees, most often disfigured.
This was a secondary, and fully intentional blow to the Roman legions' morale. This was exactly the very first scene depicted in this mini-movie.
This was often done by women, who held high places in the Germanic tribes as priestesses, and were often outside, and above the usual political feuds and power-plays of the male dominated politics. When a woman, especially a priestess spoke her mind in a Germanic tribe, men listened to them as they were considered touched by the spirit world. Also, women were NOT held back from becoming warriors themselves if they wanted to, so they could, if they wanted to, become as influential as men in the tribes' politics, not only as priestesses.
Prowess in combat was valued highly, no matter the sex.
Germania was also the name given to a mythical idealized mother-figure representing all of Germany.
Germania as a mother-figure was basically created during the Romantic era (roughly the end of the 18th century to the middle of the 19th century) by authors and musicians somehow trying to conjure a more united German spirit.
Somehow she was supposed to be watching over Germany's progress and development in history going back to exactly those ancient Germanic tribes. But like many such mythical figures she rarely if ever got actively involved in the shaping of history; she is more of a stoic observer.
So the woman you saw in the very first scene was either a priestess, or a warrior. But she is also, obviously, a representation of Germania. As she simply stared at and watched the charging Roman legionaries stoically.
And that was basically JUST that very first scene's background setting for when the Roman soldiers came up to that tree, saw the hanged men in the tree, and seeing the priestess cutting off the head of a fallen soldier.
Now imagine THIS length of discussion for almost EVERY single cut in this video. Because that's how deep into the background of Germany's history, and the contemporary background you could easily delve with each and every scene, depending on the lyrics sung right at that time.
    Nuff said, right?

As a German I just can say:
Great comment! Very detailed & very accurate. And as described, that just explains the first part of the video. Many of the scenes have double or even triple meanings and it all sums up the darkest parts of German history.
It's probably the most important song of Rammstein and for the band - considering how much of production value got into the video. And to make their political position clear once again. The band had a lot of issues with far-rights and Nazis admiring their early songs because the rough tone was connoted with the relatively popular "Rechtsrock" (right-wing rock) back then. They wrote the song "Links" (Left) for their third album as a clear message that they are not supporting far-right ideas.
As extremism grows in Germany again since the German reunification (because East and West Germany are still on a very different level in terms of education, employment & infrastructure) and the recent success of the extreme right-wing party AfD (Alternative für Deutschland), many people fearing the possibility of another fascist regime. The German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution under the right-conservative CDU, which governed 31 of the last 38 years (this year is election year), isn't doing enough against extremism, especially when it comes from right-wingers.
To counter that, a lot of artists and creators decides to make statements against CDU and AfD and producing art that shows how divided German society is.

Right. The whole video contains so much imagery pertaining to german history that you could almost fill a book explaining them. However, the main theme is the brutal, bloody and violent history drawing a red (bloody?) line throughout time, represented by that laser beam. I think that it is a clear statement towards all the people accusing Rammstein of being right-wing. Chosing a black actress as Germania is "in your face" to all those right-wing as******. Showing all the brutality throughout the ages is a statement in itself, that history makes it hard to "love" Germany. (I can´t get behind the concept of loving a country anyways....)

The different "eras" are different times in German history, except for the space suits which is generally interpreted as future archaeologists studying a forgotten Germany.
The black woman is "Germania", and represents the country throughout history.
That's why she's sometimes a leader (like during WW2), she's being devoured by the christian monks during the dark ages, she's happily entertaining the masses during the Weimar Republic, etc.
That end scene with the dog is a very specific breed of dog that was very common in Germany and then almost went extinct, but a couple were found and the breed was saved. Which in my personal opinion I think they use to symbolise the part of German society that they feel almost was obliterated, but can still be saved.
A couple of things that are hard to catch unless you know the language:
The red laser that's almost omnipresent is from a German expression "rote Faden", the closest idiomatic expression in English I can think of is "common thread", so they're basically saying there's a common thread/theme throughout history.
During the early scenes of Germania during WW2 she has an eyepatch over her right eye. There's a german expression that translates to "To be blind on the left/right eye.", with the context of someone being blind to the wrongdoings of political extremists on either the left or right side. You'll also notice that in the end of that scene the patch has moved to her left eye, right before it clips to the hostage-scene with Till in drag and a shootout. This being a reference to an overreaction in post-nazi Germany that allowed the rise of left extremists which then had some horrible outcomes (R.A.F).
Finally one of the very subtle things Till does (which he first did right after you very correctly mentioned how constants are sung through in German), is a twist on the old German national anthem, which used to start with the phrase "Deutschland, Deutschland, über alles, über alles in der Welt."
Basically "Germany, Germany, over everything, over everything in the world.".
This is no longer part of the official anthem since it's too loaded, but it's very well known.
But! He sings "Deutschland, Deutschland, über allen.", he changes alles -> allen, which changes the meaning from everything -> everyone.
So with the scenography during the times he sings it, my own interpretation is that he is blaming Germany for being oppressive towards it's own people (in different ways during different times, but that for me is the "red thread" or common thread/theme throughout)

Regarding the scene where 'Germania' gives birth to the dogs: those dogs are leonbergers, a breed that almost ceased to exist during the world wars. Hi there from Germany.
First of all, nice reaction. You guessed right, the song is about German history. It shows mostly all the dark parts of my country's history. The beautiful black woman is Germania. In the beginning she represents the "germanian tribes" ( even though there wasn't such a thing) fighting against the roman empire. Then the medieval times, when the church became powerful and fat by eating off of her. The witch burnings. Then you see the 20th of last century with the hyperinflation during the world crises (fist fight with money on the knuckles). Then of course the Nazis regime with the Hindenburg zeppelin and the V2 launchers and the concentration camp. And the burning of the books that the Nazis regimes called degenerated art. In one short sequence they show a clerical hugging a Nazis showing that the church was mainly ok with it.
Then the seventieth with the terrorism by the RAF. (Till is dressed as a woman, holding Germania/ Germany hostage).
The German reunion of the GDR and west Germany at the office. The racist riots against the refugees homes in the nineties. The birth of the "Leonberger" puppies represents the reincarnation of Germany.
And of course there are some references to their other songs included.
As a German, when I watched it the first time, I was shocked. Because you catch on to all the symbolism shown. With the lyrics together it strikes a nerv how most of us feel about our country. The video was released in 2019, which was not on accident. With the refugees crises in 2015(Germany took 1Mio within 12 month) and the again uprising right wing nationalism. Rammstein wanted to make a statement with this song/ video, how shitty they felt about the rising right wing nationalism. (And many of us do as well). They wanted to show the red thread (laser), how history repeats itself, when somebody/ something becomes too powerful.
    With love, from Germany 🤘😎

Two minor nitpicks: a) There were Germanic tribes - and sometimes they cooperated, just not to the extent that they ever thought of uniting under a single banner. b) Manufacturing of the Hindenburg began before the Nazis took power. You said the video maybe shows the band members in different past lives. Like reincarnation. I don't think that's what they had in mind with that, but it's actually a very interesting way to look at it, never heard this interpretation before. Cause you know, there is something like a collective subconsciousness in a society. People nowadays are still affected by traumatic historical experiences. There are psychologists saying, that a lot of german children these days, still suffer from the authoritarian child-raising their own grandparents experienced in the nazi era, projecting it on the next generation. I personally think that traumatizing historical events are a part of who we are. We can still feel that deep inside, many generations later. Not just talking about nazi times, also about things much longer ago, like the 30 years war. These things are deeply burnt into our subconsciousness, making it almost feel kinda pastlives.

Something that is mostly not mentioned is "the red thread", which is shown by the red laser beams.
In Germany, the common thread connects everything. If a book has a good structure, a beginning, a middle, an end and this is continued continuously, one speaks of it.
In the video, the red thread connects all the scenes, the history of Germany from its beginnings to the present day and with an interpretation of the future.
In addition, especially in this song, Rammstein plays with some German words, which get a new meaning in the emphasis and context.
Just like this video, the song is full of meaningful symbols - unfortunately a lot is lost in the translation or a lack of knowledge is lost, as has already been commented on here enough.
You could write a little book about this song with explanations.

Loved your reaction as well as your t-shirts. This was the first music video that Rammstein released after their 10 year hiatus. It had a lot of mixed reviews, mostly due to the concentration camp scene. When they promoted the music video they played part of that scene without music, which sparked a lot of controversy, but the band isn't afraid of being controversial. The music video is about Germany's History and how it can be difficult to have German Pride, given all that has happened throughout their history, especially the Holocaust and the book burnings.
The woman in the music video is the personification of Germany, she wears a lot of Red and Yellow, which are two of the three colors of the German flag, the other being Black.
There's also a lot of references to past Rammstein Music Videos/CDs like Du Hast, Mein Teil, Engel, Sonne, Made in Germany CD because of the busts shown towards the middle of the song, possibly Liebe Ist Für Alle Da cover art with the Monk scene, and even a reference to You're So Beautiful by Emigrate which is Richard's solo project.

    Hi, I'm from Germany.
Rammstein is playing a classic "Industrial Metal" style. A 50-50 mix of synthesizers and hard metal guitars.
A big part of the German history in one video. The black woman as Germania. Germania is the personification of the German nation. It isn't and wasn't a goddess or Joan of Arc.
The glass coffin: It is Little Snow White from the Grimm-fairytales....and from their own video "Sonne". Only with black skin and in space.
The piano song at the end is the song "Sonne", too.
The battle of the Teutoburg forest against the Romans (and Rammstein as Roman soldiers and Germans alike).
That battle is of ABSOLUTE importance for the German history.
The hanged bodies in the trees were the beaten Roman soldiers, who were gruesome sacrificed to the Germanic gods...and were partly nailed to the trees.
The Varus-(Teutoburg)-Battle was already in 9 AD. In 16 AD were the vengeance campaigns of Emperor Germanicus. Therefore we see here the arrival of the Roman troops of Germanicus and they are watching their dead comrades hanging in the trees or getting their heads chopped off (for nailing them to the trees).
In reality the Romans under Germanicus found only the bones of the Varus army in the various ways they were slaughtered, sacrificed and displayed at the trees. Slaves were liberated even decades after the battle.
After the scenes with the Romans we saw the Hindenburg Zeppelin disaster (the burning Zeppelin in the background).
The moustaches and clothing from the fight scene are from WWI and post WWI years. From the working class people in WWI and the roaring 20's. In the WWII years later on this kind of big bushy moustache was already out of fashion.
The falling banknotes in the prison are not about corruption. That is about the hyper-inflation of the 1920's, that took away the savings of the Germans and left them in deep poverty and desperation.
One had to pay a loaf of bread with a handcart full of nearly worthless banknotes back then and it hit the German people deep down inside and in their souls. Especially the poor ones and the simple workers.
The V2 rocket (first manmade object in space) as technical triumph of the German spirit...and at the same time the killing of the concentration camp prisoners in the bunker factories below the mountains during the production of that rocket.
This scene in the video could be a representation of a very specific concentration camp. It was "Mittelbau-Dora" below the Kohnstein mountain.
A mixture between a big, huge bunker factory for V1 and V2 rockets and a concentration camp.
The concentration camp inmates had several different markings for different kinds of convicts and their "crimes" sown to their chests, like it was in reality, too. A pink triangle for homosexuals, the star of David for Jews and two of them were marked with the double-triangles for Jehovas Whitnesses.
The book burnings of the Nazis and the burning of the witches of the church. In the same scene with the book burning there is EVEN MORE going on. The cooperation of the church with the Nazis, when the priest with the cross embraces the Nazi SA-man.
The scene with the sign with the Hammer and a pair of compasses in a circle of wheat is the sign of the GDR (DDR). The socialist German state in the east that existed before the German reunification.
Therefore it was Karl Marx in the background in the scene with the tank (not the scene at the concentration camp).
The scene with Rammstein wielding guns (the pumpgun) and taking Germania hostage was about leftwing terrorism of the 1970's. The terrorists were called the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion).
My interpretation of the red scanner-like beams: There are two different kinds of beams. The massive straight red light beam that goes up into the heavens AND there were those smaller, thinner "scanner" beams.
Aliens (or humans from the future) are scanning the whole German history. Like some real scientists are scanning and excarvating ancient Mexican or Egyptian statues, for example.
The massive red light beam is the red ribbon of time that ties together all the historical events.
PS: As for the dogs: Germans are fanatical dog lovers. We are a dog-owner nation. The dog is a firm part of Germany.
PPS: They didn't eat the body of the woman and her inner organs, even if it really looked that way. They were eating the national dish of Germany, that was put on the body of the black woman: Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages.
In my opinion it symbolizes the church eating itself fat on the goods and values and food of Germany during the simple people (farmers, simple workers etc) lived a long time in a kind of hell of poverty and serfdom (the red fetish area below the table with Germania on it).
But that eating scene could indeed have a double meaning. It could represent the 30 years war, that was fought for religious reasons and depopulated large areas of Germany. It forced the people to commit canibalism because nobody was there anymore to produce food. Except the fat, wealthy people of the church, of course. They were still able to eat enough. Only the simple people at the bottom (farmers etc) died from hunger and had to fight and die in that war.
The 30 years war was the biggest catastrophe in Germany until WWI happened.
PPPS: The short scene with the dogs and their gas masks = WWI, where in reality animals (messenger dogs & horses) AND soldiers were wearing gas masks, too.
PPPPS: The puppies at the end are Leonberger dogs. The Leonbergers nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII.
PPPPPS: My interpretation of the glass coffin is Little Snow White in space, like I wrote before.
PPPPPPS: The black woman in the prison was dressed in a Prussian uniform with a Prussian helmet.
    Finally:
The scenes I'm now talking about are pretty dark and low light. The WWII submarine in the submarine bunker during the astronauts are walking by with the glass coffin.
I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because:
    a) it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless
    b) she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold
    c) it provokes many people EVEN MORE 😄
    Recommendation for a reaction:
The band "Die Krupps" and their song "Im falschen Land".
Link to my favourite fan video of that song: ruclips.net/video/Ts-JpeKDRpQ/видео.html

She is black, red eyes, golden dress. Germany's flag. Plus 100 images of historical German eras. BUT also tons of old Rammstein songs pieces. Examples: Till's head has the haircut of the "Ich Will" video, in the end, they crawl (and eat a human) like in "Mein Teil" in front of huge angel wings "Engel". I can watch this video even in 2022 and I still find metaphorical masterpieces or band history.

the german press pretty much responds the same way they always do when rammstein has a new release. declaring lyrics as proof that they are nazis, then trying their best to censor them to the best of their abilities almost always using "we must protect the children" as their main argument.

the MAIN COLORS are BLACK, GOLD and RED (mostly in the Background!).
That is why "GERMANIA" was role played by a black Actress. As she holds the Gun against the Had: She is BLACK, wears golden things and has a RED GLOVE, she is ALWAYS and in EACH SCENE symboled this way. That are the german national Colors... so the Colors of our flag.
As there was a Scene from the cold war she stands in the background, wearing BLACK clothes, wearing something golden close to a RED flag....
Even the burning of the Witch symbols this (all 3 Colors are present).
The only Scene where ALL of the Colors are missing is the Scene from the Concentration Camp.
But the 4 People symbol what the Nazis have done. From left to right:
Political Prisinor (Member of a forbidden Party for Example), Jew, Gay, normal Criminal, all clearly determineable because of the Symbols at their Clothing.
So they even show that not just Jews where murdered. A Detail many People do miss.
Another Detail: The Prison-Scene, the Officer "pushed" him so he felt down and he felt to the "left" side. You see a RED MARKING later and he is clearly on the left (from the other Camera perspective "right" but as he was pushed he was pushed to the left): Implication: The STATE itself pushed people to the Extremists (NSDAP, Hitler where EXTREME LEFTISTS). You also see 2 old Guys pointing at the Guy laying down at the floor and talking to him like "Your Fault!". A Detail nobody realy notices...
The Red Line symbols the "middle", left and right then the politcal Extreme. To understand this you need to know about the Weimer Republic.
This Scene also contains the only "Fault" during filming, they mixed up the Sides because they started from the front and wanted him pushed to the lextextremism, but if you turn the Camera behind him it looks like the "right", wich is political wrong. Hitler was a extreme leftists, there was only one rightwinger at europe, it was Franco from Spain, and he did not took part in WW2.

The music video with probably the greatest replay value.

I didn't say that it wasn't handled in school.
I claim that the only thing that sticks out of history lessons after school are the events just before and during the Second World War. As well as the time until the fall of the Wall. The rest is perhaps still roughly known. I think. The brain needs space for new knowledge. Old knowledge is thrown out when you don't need it.

@@TomTomson81 Well, I`m nearly 50, so it's been quite a time for myself, too. But what makes this video confusing for some people is the mixing of germany`s history (you see people from different time periods in one scene) and in addition to that Rammstein`s history (for instance, I think I saw the video 4 times before I noticed the fire masks from "Feuer frei"). And people who don`t know about the 70s left wing terrorists, the monks or the roman times still sense that these are powerful images. To be honest, I don't know anything about the director of this video.

    • @TomTomson81
      @TomTomson81 3 года назад

@@hpark4054 I could also serve with basic knowledge. But I personally could not go into detail anymore. I know, of course, that things all happened. But I can no longer assign most of them exactly without a history book. I think that's how most people feel. At least those who have not lived in appropriate times. But what gets stuck in any case is the darkest of our time.

In the beginning we have the Germans defeating Rome.
The scene with Till dressed as woman is the R.A.F.
The two guys boxing represent the infighting during the Weimar Republic.
During the ww2 scene you can see Germania being blind on the 'right' side.
The people awaiting their hanging have different stars: one is jewish, one is a socialist, one is homosexual.
The dogs she is giving birth to are a typical german breed.

This gives a lot of room for interpretation for germans. Sadly non-germans barely have a chance of even getting to the point where they can wonder what the heck they want to say with this. Just understanding the language wouldn't even help. It has so many metaphors, so many phrases with double meaning or to get why the line "Deutschland, Deutschland über Allen" is borderline scandalous, one also needs to know german history.
And this song is about the lyrics and about the video. Musically this is a rather mediocre song. I mean, it's still good, but by far not one of their best. But with the lyrics and the video, not just as a song but as a piece of art, this is probably their most outstanding work.
