You can only be proud on your personal achievents. But I love my country, its culture and many of its people. I feel (still) privileged to live here in this wonderful democratic! Europe.

To give a little context: The video shows several events in German history like the defeat of the Romans by uniting several Germanic tribes, The Hindenburg disaster, the "roaring" 1920s, RAF and of course World War II to name a few. The colored lady in every scene is Germania a personification of Germany, hence she wears red and gold to go with the German flag: black, red, gold. Also, a Important part is where the monks are eating Germania. It's suppose to symbolize how the church absolutely canabilized Germany during the middle ages. They enriched themselves while the German population starved and suffered. Not to mention the red laser that ties it all together. The texts describes the struggle of the band with the troubling past and the successes of Germany over the years. "Germany... my heart in flames, want to love and damn you". Very deep meaning. You have to know German history to catch all references.

I am living in Germany for some 9 years amd i must say that i've never seen such behaviour from any other nation.I mean,We all know what have happened in the 30's and 40's,but it's only the Germans who confronted their past in an honest and direct way.No nonsense, just the acceptance of what happened and doing your best to correct it.No other nation is doing this, normally others just trying to excuse the wrongdoings. Not Germany and because of this they have my full and utter respect. It takes a lot of curridge to do what the Germans are doing in the last few decades.I just wish the USA comes out in the same way, they also need a long look in the mirror.

I agree. My Dutch father survived the war and fought at Rotterdam until his country surrendered and then spent the rest of the war in the Resistance. He told me once when I was kid studying the war that he used to hate Germans because of it, but he said that he came to respect Germans deeply because they chose to confront what happened and took steps to ensure that the world and their own people would always remember the atrocities that their nation was responsible for. He said it took a rare and exceptional kind of courage for a nation to accept and highlight their own sins and they should be applauded as an example for every other nation.

I think it’s a great example- and really putting their foot down or we will remember what happened, you cant have these symbols any further. I do believe a lot of it was when someone came around during times of poverty and burning money in the street for more value of warmth, they didn’t have much autonomy to stop. Sort of like the Russians. I feel for most of them especially with the conscription. But if they speak out… not just themselves they put in danger, but their families possibly. It’s devastating. Especially as we have helpless feelings just watching it unfold.

There is a nice sentence: "Love is blind."
And as a german when I look to other countrys especially the us, this sentence comes to my mind. As a german you kind of love your country, but you are cautious about it and where it goes, politically and socially, cause in our past we've seen where these blindness can lead us.
The song basically says, that we germans cannot love our country unconditionally, as much as we would like to, cause of our past.
We are still proud of our country for what it achieved and what it become, but we will never stop paying attention to where it's going, so it never turns the wrong way again.

@@ingopinkowski1091 What kind of bilch are you talking? Electricity 24/7, food at the supermarkets. And Gas is available as well.
Now regarding the high prices on energy, that's what happens when you use tax money to support the energy company, even thou the prices have dropped again. So their shareholders get even more dividends. And that in turn has to do with a law that was originally intended to protect the high, but now very low price of renewable energies. 43% 8f Finnland's energy comes from renewable energy.

@@ingopinkowski1091 If we would have gone to solar and wind power 16-20 years ago, we would face non of these problems, cause 1. energy produced with these in our country would not depend on imports and 2. the production cost is way cheaper, Energy from Coal costs around 125 Euro per MW/h, Gas around 100 Euro per MW/h, Wind Onshore (aka on fields) around 60 Euro per MW/h and Solar is at around 40 Euro per MW/h (Study from 2021 so before the prices of coal and gas gone up)
And now we shove the blame to the people that many years ago wanted to make the change happen and we vote for people that are against this necessary change, cause it would cost us money now and we don't want to pay now, even when in the long run it would save a lot.
And maybe you should check your price charts again, as of sep 2022 the avg. price for energy in finland was at 41.8 C per kw/h while in germany it was at 51.0 C per kw/h.
      Source: globalpetrolprices com.
A country with really low prices in Europe is Norway with 11.9 C per kw/h, but norway has 10% Energy from Wind Power and 90% from Water Power (Water Power is not useable for us since we lack the mountains in the needed amount, but we have more sun hours and better wind cause less mountains that would block the wind)
And since Agriculture is extremely dependent on big machinery, it needs a lot of energy, that's why food prices trend with energy prices, if we would produce our energy in our country without imports, we would face no problem there too. And last time I checkt it, germany was exporting more food than importing food, so we produce more than we need, so we are not dependend on importing food.
So I know who I would blame for our current problems and as insane as it sounds, the majority seems to blame someone else.
Which is a reason why I don't think a democracy is a good system in times of need, but as bad as it is, it is still the system with the least risk of people abusing their power to really harm people. Sadly it requires the people to be smart enough to protect it and as it seems now, the global trend tends in a direction of people not being smart enough.

    Hi, I'm from Germany.
Rammstein is playing a classic "Industrial Metal" style. A 50-50 mix of synthesizers and hard metal guitars.
A big part of the German history in one video. The black woman as Germania. Germania is the personification of the German nation. It isn't and wasn't a goddess or Joan of Arc.
The glass coffin: It is Little Snow White from the Grimm-fairytales....and from their own video "Sonne". Only with black skin and in space.
The piano song at the end is the song "Sonne", too.
The words "Germania Magna" at the beginning are a Roman name for the area of Germany, that wasn't conquered by the Roman Empire at that time.
Germania Superior and Germania Inferior were the Roman conquered areas (Roman provinces) of Germany.
The line in this song "So jung und doch so alt" (So young and yet so old) means:
Germany as a unified state is very young. A unified German nation is only existing from 1871 onwards. Before that year of unification Germany was made of countless, little mini-states and the people identified first and foremost as Prussians, Hessians, Saxons etc, etc, etc. and only in a second line of thought they had a lose sense of being somehow Germans, too, as a kind of unifying second identity.
So the area & the landscape where the Germans are living and the Germans themselves as a people...are thousands of years old. But only recently, in 1871, there was a unified Germany as one single state.
So Germany as a unified state is very young...and at the same time it is thousands of years old.
The battle of the Teutoburg forest against the Romans (and Rammstein as Roman soldiers and Germans alike).
That battle is of ABSOLUTE importance for the German history.
The hanged bodies in the trees were the beaten Roman soldiers, who were gruesome sacrificed to the Germanic gods...and were partly nailed to the trees.
The Varus-(Teutoburg)-Battle was already in 9 AD. In 16 AD were the vengeance campaigns of commanding field general Germanicus under Emperor Tiberius Augustus. Therefore we see here the arrival of the Roman troops of Germanicus and they are watching their dead comrades hanging in the trees or getting their heads chopped off (for nailing them to the trees).
In reality the Romans under Germanicus found only the bones of the Varus army in the various ways they were slaughtered, sacrificed and displayed at the trees. Slaves were liberated even decades after the battle.
After the scenes with the Romans we saw the Hindenburg Zeppelin disaster (the burning Zeppelin in the background).
The moustaches and clothing from the fight scene are from WWI and post WWI years. From the working class people in WWI and the roaring 20's. In the WWII years later on this kind of big bushy moustache was already out of fashion.
The falling banknotes in the prison are not about corruption. That scene is about the hyper-inflation of the 1920's, that took away the savings of the Germans and left them in deep poverty and desperation.
One had to pay a loaf of bread with a handcart full of nearly worthless banknotes back then and it hit the German people deep down inside and in their souls. Especially the poor ones and the simple workers.
The V2 rocket (first manmade object in space) as technical triumph of the German spirit...and at the same time the killing of the concentration camp prisoners in the bunker factories below the mountains during the production of that rocket.
This scene in the video could be a representation of a very specific concentration camp. It was "Mittelbau-Dora" below the Kohnstein mountain.
A mixture between a big, huge bunker factory for V1 and V2 rockets and a concentration camp.
The concentration camp inmates had several different markings for different kinds of convicts and their "crimes" sown to their chests, like it was in reality, too. A pink triangle for homosexuals, the star of David for Jews and two of them were marked with the double-triangles for Jehovas Whitnesses.
The book burnings of the Nazis and the burning of the witches of the church. In the same scene with the book burning there is EVEN MORE going on. The cooperation of the church with the Nazis, when the priest with the cross embraces the Nazi SA-man.
The scene with the sign with the Hammer and a pair of compasses in a circle of wheat is the sign of the GDR (DDR). The socialist German state in the east that existed before the German reunification.
Therefore it was Karl Marx in the background in the scene with the tank (not the scene at the concentration camp).
The scene with Rammstein wielding guns (the pumpgun) and taking Germania hostage was about leftwing terrorism of the 1970's. The terrorists were called the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion).
My interpretation of the red scanner-like beams: There are two different kinds of beams. The massive straight red light beam that goes up into the heavens AND there were those smaller, thinner "scanner" beams.
Aliens (or humans from the future) are scanning the whole German history. Like some real scientists are scanning and excarvating ancient Mexican or Egyptian statues, for example.
The massive red light beam is the red ribbon of time that ties together all the historical events.
PS: As for the dogs: Germans are fanatical dog lovers. We are a dog-owner nation. The dog is a firm part of Germany.
PPS: They didn't eat the body of the woman and her inner organs, even if it really looked that way. They were eating the national dish of Germany, that was put on the body of the black woman: Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages.
In my opinion it symbolizes the church eating itself fat on the goods and values and food of Germany during the simple people (farmers, simple workers etc) lived a long time in a kind of hell of poverty and serfdom (the red fetish area below the table with Germania on it).
But that eating scene could indeed have a double meaning. It could represent the 30 years war, that was fought for religious reasons and depopulated large areas of Germany. It forced the people to commit canibalism because nobody was there anymore to produce food. Except the fat, wealthy people of the church, of course. They were still able to eat enough. Only the simple people at the bottom (farmers etc) died from hunger and had to fight and die in that war.
The 30 years war was the biggest catastrophe in Germany until WWI happened.
PPPS: The short scene with the dogs and their gas masks = WWI, where in reality animals (messenger dogs & horses) AND soldiers were wearing gas masks, too.
PPPPS: The puppies at the end are Leonberger dogs. The Leonbergers nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII.
PPPPPS: The black woman in the prison was dressed in a Prussian uniform with a Prussian helmet.
Till sings the famous, often misinterpreted, line of the "Deutschlandlied" (Song of the Germans), that is not forbidden in Germany but simply isn't sung anymore in our modern national anthem.
Till sings in his version the line "Deutschland über allen" (Germany above everybody) What is a BIG change to the real line in the orginal Deutschlandlied-song. In the original Deutschlandlied song it is written as "Deutschland über alles" (Germany above everything).
The real, whole line of that old Deutschlandlied goes "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles. Über alles in der Welt" (Germany, Germany above everything. Above everything in the world).
This line is often misinterpreted by many people as chauvinism and as a looking down upon all other countries on this planet. But that is wrong and not many people know about that in Germany and elsewhere.
The writer of that famous line didn't meant it in a chauvinistic way.
When that song was written, Germany was divided into umphteenth mini-states, what made Germany relative powerless and defenseless. Therefore the task of German unification was the goal above any other goal for all Germans (at least the writer of the song meant it that way).
So the main goal for all Germans had to be the united Germany. The goal of "(united) Germany above everything else".
That was, how that line was meant by the writer of the song.
The line isn't forbidden, like many people wrongly think. It's simply not sung anymore and not part of the official anthem of modern Germany anymore.
This has NOT its reason in the seemingly chauvinist meaning of "Deutschland über alles", like many people wrongly think. This whole stanza of the Deutschlandlied isn't sung anymore, because in other parts of the stanza are borders and landscapes mentioned, that aren't German borders and landscapes anymore.
We want to live in peace with the people and countries, who are now living in those former German lands and therefore we don't sing about those old borders and landscapes anymore.
It has nothing to do with the "Deutschland über alles" line in that stanza, like many people wrongly are thinking.
    Finally:
The scenes I'm now talking about are pretty dark and low light. The WWII submarine in the submarine bunker during the astronauts are walking by with the glass coffin.
I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because:
    a) it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless
    b) she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold
    c) it provokes many people EVEN MORE 😄
    Greetings

PS: RUclips didn't allow me to integrate this information into the bigger text (above) for unknown reasons, therefore I'm posting it here:
The troops, who smashed the Jewish shops during the Kristallnacht (not shown in the video) were SA (Sturmabteilung) in brown uniform and not the later SS (Schutzstaffel) in the black uniform. The SA did all the dirty work at the beginning of the Nazi rise to power...until the "Night of the long knives", an inner-Nazi power struggle, happened. The head of the SA (Ernst Röhm) was killed and from then on the SA was turned more and more into the SS under Himmler.
The book burnings were part of the early Nazi years, too, and were done by the SA, too. One can see the SA burning the books and Till is watching it in a brown SA uniform.
Both, Kristallnacht and book burnings were different things and happened at different times. The book burnings happened over a longer timespan at different locations at different times during the Kristallnacht was one big "event" that happened at one single day.
Kristallnacht means "Crystal Night" and was called that way, because the smashed shop windows of the Jewish shops looked like thousands of crystals on the ground. But in the Rammstein video I've only seen the book burnings.
      PPS:
The two beer drinking soldiers to the left side of the table, where Germania is lying on and where the priests are eating Sauerkraut & Sausages from her body, are not French soldiers and they aren't representing the French revolution. Those two beer drinking soldiers are Prussian soldiers and they are emphasizing the importance of Prussia for the German history.
As far as I could see: They were from the era of Friedrich der Große (The Old Fritz), who was of extraordinary importance for German history. Amongst many other achievements he was the one, who brought the potato to Prussia and Germany. That saved many Germans from hunger and the potato became one of the most beloved foods in Germany on that way.

      Hello and Hallo,
Good comment but in one thing i don't agree 100%. It's metal...of course... but it's not exactly "Industrial Metal". Rammstein and some newer Bands created the Subgenre "Neue Deutsche Härte (engl. New German Hardness).
But it's true that industrial sounds are often included. The subgenre is also including deep powerful german voices, hard guitars and riffs and (mostly) very poetic or controversial themes (other band for example: Eisbrecher).

Every country has dark pages in their history, and as such most people can relate to this mixture of love and hate. What makes Germany exceptional in this is that they have mixed feelings about loving their country, because it was precisely that love that led to some of its darkest history. It's not just that they can't feel proud about their past. They can't feel pride because they know what it can lead to.

The more I see/hear this track, the more of a masterpiece it seems. A brilliant combination of history, subjectivity, imagery and emotion. The music is superb throughout and I especially love how, toward the end, the female vocalisation comes in low in the mix and then increases in volume as the song concludes. And, although many point towards the standard Rammstein ‘sound’ and how their song constructions are very simple, this is a band that can do this and, a few years later, also make Dicke Titten. Now that shows the range of facets they have.
Your analysis was also excellent and thoughtful - really enjoyed it.

And when it comes to recommendations... you said something less heavy and less serious. Well, that is not my strongest side, because I love dark, sad and serious Rammstein the most, but you might try "Ich tu dir weh" live just to show you next level of live performing and also you will have a great fun watching it. In my opinion, it is the perfect next song for you to react to. That performance is really amazing and artistic. OR if you want official video again, then you might try "Zick Zack" or even "Dicke Titten" (both from their latest album "Zeit"). I think it's great how the director incorporated various Rammstein devotional objects like the angel wings, the flamethrowers, the busts of the band members and the glass coffin into the video. Rammstein is Germany's biggest music export and therefore an important part of German history.

The song "Sonne" is played on the piano and it is absolutely beautiful but you also have the visuals which making me very sad especially when I see the prisoners from concentration camp. I am very proud for many things in Germany and Germans history (not at least Rammstein ;-) ), but also I am very sad for what our country is guilty of. And it is not so far away as in some other countries, which also are guilty of something. Everyone is and we can only hope people learn from it. And Rammstein did a great job to try to archive the memories for everyone who wants to listen.

An example of how deep the images are and I also do not understand everything, as a German 6:54 :
The church eats up Germania and they eat from it sauerkraut, Kasseler (really tasty meat) and sausages. Underneath is a tank and there drown people who rebel and scream.
The kings in Germany at that time gave a lot of land to the church and it became very, very rich. All at the expense of the peasants and the very poor people.
Rammstein is very symbolic and it's really hard to understand every detail, but they convey the feeling clearly, even if there is always room for interpretation. That's also what makes them so interesting and versatile.
If I had a song request, please check out "Mein Herz brennt (Piano Version)". A very dark sandman, which sings there but is heartbreaking.

01:28 she's Germania, the personification of Germany
02:19 the boxing match symbolises the division of 1920's Weimar republic, where fights between communist and nazi street gangs were common place and this split in parliament led to the nazis being able to take over power. of course everyone claimed to just want the best for the people - "im Herz getrennt, im Geist vereint" (united in heart, divided in spirit)
03:49 the monks cannibalising Germania symbolise the religious wars of the 16th and 17th century when germany was split into dozens of feudal states and the only ones profiting were the lords and the church
05:00 germany wasn't united until 1871, yet "the germans" have been around for a long time, as you can tell by the first scene in 16AD
06:44 "i can't give you my love" is exactly right. at the same time we see the 1970's far-left terrorist group RAF abducting Germania - a reference to their abduction and killing of H.M. Schleyer (at the time president of the german union of industrialists and former SS-commander)
The prisoners about to be hanged have different patches on them, there is a homosexual, political prisoner, jew
13:00 as for recommendation: react to Rammstein's song "Radio" next, it's about them growing up in eastern germany, where everything from the west was forbidden and the radio was their window to the outside world. also musically it is very interesting.

Some video recommendations I have -
    a) funny songs - "Dicke Titten" "Pussy"
    b) the piano music that played in the credits is "Sonne"
    c) "Mein Herz Brennt" official version VS "Mein Herz Brennt" piano version. Compare and contrast these two! In my opinion they give off different vibes and meanings. Official version is told by the children and the piano version is told by the sandman's point of view.
    d) sad songs - "Ohne Dich", "Mutter", "Diamant", "Klavier"
    E) heavy songs, dark topics - "Ich tu dir weh" "weiner blut" "Mein teil"
There is so much out there!!! I really recommend every single song of theirs :) enjoy!

    14: 12 As a german, no you don`t.
Even germans sometimes don´t want to be germans. It is not a picnic, we know what our grandparents did/let happen.
We are reminded very often of our role in history. In the 1990s I was in newcastle(UK) for a holiday language exchange.
We intoduced ourself and had to tell from wich country we are. Than the teacher would ask the other students what they associate with your country.
I got Hitler, Autobahn, Oktoberfest, Nazis, concentration camps and the holocaust... was a really nice gut punc for my 15 year old self.
Sometimes after the passing of a dear uncle ,we go through their stuff and find an old uniform , medals, letters, fotos ,etc.
We still have problems dealing with the disconnect that dear uncle Leopold was a guard in a concentration camp, but as a kid he is just the nice uncle that looks sad sometimes.
Rammstein made this to express this diconnect, we are proud of the country we are now.
But we also know that unreflected patriotism was kinda our gateway drug to facism. So there is a very subjectiv fine line in our cultur between "good" and "bad" patriotism. It is okay to be proud but beeing patriotic outside Soccer WM or specific holidays is seen as "suspicious".
Americans may think this is bonkers but "Never again!" has a special meaning for most of us. So our patriotism is more regional. Instead of our whole country we are patriotic about the state (Bundesland) we live in.
So belive me , you want to be a german citizen. Our life standards and healthcare are great.
You do not want to be a german. Our history is screwed up and painful to deal with.
Because if you are german, this video will make you tear up nearly every time.

I believe the Germans are most educated about their history, the good and the bad. Other countries mostly try to forget/cover their bad history. I think the German way is the best. When you don’t remember or taught about the bad things, the chance is bigger that history will repeat itself.

Well YOU ARE LUCKY. I’m American and I get to watch my country DO THIS RIGHT NOW…..
A MINORITY is destroying and taking over America…..democracy is GOING TO DIE.
They for real and seriously want to KILL US! I mean us libs, liberals, on the left etc…..
I don’t see how it’s gonna be stopped. Biden to centrist and SCARED to TAKE REAL ACTION LIKE SANDERS WOULD DO.
Disgusting……and I never ever thought I’d be alive for it, I’ve consumed so much German history (I’m 98% German, my family came over in 1930s….) & never did I think I’d live to see it HAPPENING AGAIN
