Amazon sells a $21 light that plugs into the seven pin trailer socket. Nice bright reverse light and having it plugged in the truck thinks you are towing and disables start stop
Good info, another way to disable that stupid thing.
I’ve done this process about a month ago……and I have 0 issues…..VERY happy I made the decision
It’s a great alternative for sure!!
Is it still working because i want to do this
@@freshlyfe4400 working like a charm
The check engine light drops off after 2nd or 3rd engine start. I did this to my JT literally a couple days ago. Bypassing the AUX battery did the trick for me...
How big is the battery supposed to be to run without the auxiliary battery, i just got an H6 760cca, the dealer that sold me the jeep put a 24F non AGM battery with only 550cc
Great video. I also got stuck with “interesting” results on the dash. The Stop Start service warning was still popping up. Found out that disconnecting the main battery’s negative entirely was needed for 10 minutes in order to do an electrical reset.
On my 2024 Rubicon, I simply removed the auxiliary battery altogether, as I did not want to deal with. It's been six months now and zero issues.
great thanks for posting this, I hate these systems!
Guess who's Gladiator wouldn't start today! And did exactly what you said your wife's JL did! And I couldn't jump it with my EverStart jumper. We had to roll it out on to the street with the tow truck guy..
But I did notice for some weeks it did start doing that, struggling to start.. I thought it was weird. I had watched another video about jump starting the Gladiator and guess what video was just recommended to me. This one!
Good to see one of your videos again and
That’s a bummer. Welcome back.
Had similar issues with the ESS. We used the option of removing the battery and bypassing the battery with a jumper on the fuse block. It has worked well on a JLU and a JT for over two years.
Best of all, no idiot lights on the dash.
Jumper on fuse box? I just removed the inner hood switch but I do have a with circle on dash
@@mblake0420 Yes, it allows you to bypass the second auxiliary battery. I used a 10 ga jumper on the N1 and N2 posts in the fuse box. Disconnected the aux leads from the main battery and removed the aux battery. No issues for over two years in a JL and JT.
@@TealOxAdv I believe u just need to pull number 42 fuse, jumper necessary?
@@mblake0420 I have not tried that. I believe that will work, but I understand you will still have an ESS fault displayed on the dash.
Just did it after the gladiator left my wife stranded. Will do it to the wrangler when it fails as well. 😊
Good video.. I feel your pain! Thanks you for this good idea
Still working with no issues.
Thanks for the info my auto start started acting up freaking hate that system.
Me too😡
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching.
I wish my gladiator JT would have a light on the dash for when I leave the tailgate open lol.
Had this issue over the summer while playing in Colorado on top of a pass. I had installed a Auto Start/Stop Eliminator in the spring hoping that it would keep the aux battery from dying quickly, while i like the Eliminator because it remembers the last setting, the battery shots craps at the most in opportune time. Made it down the mountain, pulled the negative cable off the main battery to clear codes, then disconnected the Aux battery, pulled fuse 42, hooked up the main negative cable, restarted the jeep and no problems. Made it back home, pulled the aux battery by going through the passenger side wheel well instead of pulling the full fuse block, taped off both cables for the aux battery and dumped the battery. Still running off the smaller main battery, no issues, I will go with the lager battery when this battery shoots craps. I can't believe people spend the money on replacing that dang thing.
What large main battery did you go with?
Have not updated my battery yet, still running strong, as soon as it starts to go I'll decide then@@lifeoutdoors3953
If you do this the ESS will continue to operate off of the main battery which means you need to hit the ESS off button each time you drive. It also disables the remote start feature.
All you do for that is pull the hood pin sensor. It pops up when you open the hood to disable and it’s easily pullable
Sir what’s good to have for car batteries to keep them maintained is the Noco Genius5. Worth every penny….
Typically yes…however, this system seems immune to common sense!
Did the same thing to my 2020 Gladiator Sport S about a month ago have had no problems so far.
Great to hear👍
May try this myself. I heard mixed reviews on the bypass cable
Please keep us updated. If you don't experience any problem I will try this with my JT. Appreciate the video.
No issues as of today👍
@@robmotiveplus Does the Remote Start still work ?
That Jeep doesn’t have it.
You hit the jackpot Rob with this discovery.
Definitely the easiest solution I’ve found👍
Hiya, What year Jeep JL is this? I have a 2024 wondering if it’s the same, your video is the newest post on this.
It’s a 2018.
Great, is after removing the fuse & grounding, auto-start button turns ON in dashboard? Thanks
Mine too. You ever figure I out?
Excellent discovery. Will you be doing the same to your 2024 Wrangler? I'd be interested to know.
Once I start experiencing the issue I will for sure!
Thank you big government for forcing these bs envoronmental "savings" on us that may save a fraction of a percent of fuel. In the mean time, it causes the general public to spend on replacing useless batteries at a larger cost the to environment and my wallet. Oh and also wearing down other components in your car like the starter.
This is a common procedure for eliminating ESS in the Gladiator forum/groups. I’ll be having my dealer replace my batteries for free if they fail while my ‘22 Gladiator is under warranty, but as soon as the warranty is up, I’ll definitely be doing this to mine (if I keep it that long). That aux. battery location is the dumbest afterthought I’ve ever seen on any vehicle! I get that under hood space is lacking, but why not put it behind the glove box under the dash or under the back seat?!? Literally ANYWHERE other than where they put it would be better!!!
Yup! It’s a horrible location!
@@robmotiveplus designed by a crack team of engineers that never were forced to work on their own designs
I have a 2021 Wrangler EcoDiesel. The diesel engine has the Aux battery under the Main battery. It is super easy to change the Aux battery while changing the main battery which I did at 3 years (which is a long time for a battery in Arizona). That way I don't have a battery issue in the desert. I don't like the Auto Start Stop system. I hit the button every time I go somewhere. I did hear the JL Tazer system has a setting where the Jeep remembers the last setting. You can push it and forget it. I haven't done that yet. Your way seems much easier. Thanks
Interesting. I watched a different video that disconnected the other negative cable with the bolt.
They could have. They’d be ground thru the aux battery but still running thru the aux battery.
Update...it does NOT drain my battery. So this worked and has for the past 3 days. No more stupid service start stop system and the Avengers A light on my dash. Appreciate the tutorial.
Good to hear👍
😂 Avengers A light. I call it that too
@@jamescannon6784 and yet, Scarlett Johansson never shows
@@thatonedude926 :(
I prefer using the Tazer to force the ESS to remain off all the time. Additionally, I really enjoy all the other benefits of the Tazer, e.g., tire sizing, hood alarm, pin alarm lock, brake hold, etc.
Too expensive for just (in my case) ESS elimination.
@@robmotiveplus But the vast majority do not purchase the Tazer for only one thing. They buy it because al the incredible features. If you change tire size or want greater security, it pays for itself. My Jeep Gladiator doesn't fit in my garage. Now I have a hood lock, hood alarm, and steering wheel combination lock. My locking gas cap is in the mail.
I can’t speak for the masses, but it’s too much 💰 for my needs.
@@robmotiveplus For all the mods you purchase for all your Jeeps and content, it should be a drop in the bucket for you. Plus, it would add content.
One needs to consider the value added compared to cost for mods. Some are "feel good" and some are functional. This product does not add enough value to just it's cost for me.
I have a new rubicon and changed the battery twice cause they died. I’m going to try this hopefully it works
eTourque is the way to go. Sure you have the ESS but no stupid "aux" battery.. ( The mild hybrid ysytem has a 48v battery the handles the ESS)
I've talked to a couple aftermarket shops and they really know what they're doing this guy is good a mechanic he said your alternator will not charge your battery when you do this if it's on there for the factory it's made to work like this now the Jeeps that don't have it for the factory it's a different kind of motor if you have this exhilar battery you are supposed to run it it is going to cause problems that's why I haven't done it everyone told me it will cause problems it's made to have it for a reason it's not just to start stop it runs other things it lets the alternator charge the battery
So far so good.
I read the same thing. "Other things" are yet to be identified. I think audio is one of them although I haven't had any issues with that.
I did mine yesterday After 2 days testing , 2 times in stop signal jeep seems to stop the engine, after that i need to press the aux battery switch off on dash
I have a 2020 jeep compass and there is no F42 fuse. Anybody know the fuse number for the compass?
That seems to work, Or can replace the batteries. Yeah that is $300 but Christa appears to be going to drive the Jeep might be worth the investment.
What you just did seems to be a popular method to deal with the auxiliary battery. Did you find that the start/stop system still works but now uses the main battery? I don't like the start/stop so I always push the button to disable the feature. When my auxiliary battery starts to act up I will be doing the fuse pull and negative cable disconnect and tape off.
Nope. The fuse defeats the system.
@robmotivejl Not true on my 2021 JL. I removed the fuse (42) and completely eliminated the aux battery and I still have to push the button to disable my ESS.
@TIPH966 probably because you left out a step. Gotta watch the whole video.
Not sure what other steps were missed. Fuse pull and neg batt terminal disconnect. I also have the 2021 jl that’s why I’m curious before I do this mod.
From what I understand you can still be left stranded when the aux battery dies even if you pull fuse 42. All that does is disable the start stop. The true fix is deleting the aux battery and hooking up its connection to the main battery.
I have a 2021 wrangler and also having issues. Aux switches not working while battery charging. I thought aux battery. Mine has a 3.6 with e-torque. Turns out no aux battery under fuse panel. different system. Just a heads up for people w/e-torque. Just bad main battery.
This is why you don't buy those systems
Great trouble shooting. I will use your method to disable the system when the Auxiliary battery start causing me problems. I think that if the aux battery is in good shape, it is a good source to start the vehicle if the main battery is bad. The reverse will not be true. The entire system is just cumbersome. They should have installed the aux battery in an accessible place. Symply poorly laid out system.
the 2020 RHD 2 litre has the aux battery directly under the main battery, just lift the main out ,lift the plastic hatch and there you are
a dealer mechanic told me it will put a drain on main battery any issues so fat ?
No issues with mine.
I removed the fuse and disconnected the ground but all my lights came back on also it disabled my remote start so obviously the remote start runs off that small auto start-stop battery on a 2020 Gladiator Rubicon. And when the check engine light comes on in the auto start-stop light comes on it runs like crap starts running real rough
That’s a bummer!
I've been doing a bit of research and just FYI for June 2021+ JT/JL it's actually the other black wire... Which is really weird coz like.. how am I gonna connect the black wire you took off without that metal plate on there? lol.. I guess I'll find out tomorrow :)
I tackled that in a video I believe.
Is it the same battery terminal on a 2021 wrangler? With the 4 cylinder turbo
I can’t say. I haven’t had a ‘21😬
I have a 2020 JLU .. just did it and yes it is the same cable .. on that larger bolt
Will this work with the gladiators as well?
Should as long as you have the 3.6L non-etorque.
My wife's jeep won't remote start anymore now that I've done this exact procedure. 2020 JL with the turboed 2.0L
I believe I have the same model of Jeep, other than the remote start have any Service engine Messages reappeared for you?
I changed main battery in my jl and got CEL. Disconnected ground again for 2 min reinstalled and cleared CEL ?
Good that it cleared.
Didn't work on my 2020 jeep rubicon JLU
does this affect remote start? if it doesn't I'm going to do this tonight
Good question? I’d think not, but I’ve not tried it.
I had that issue, just commented about it. Did you have any issues on yours @qshrek ?
@@samvigil9835 not yet.
I just replaced both batteries. I read the aux battery is for the SS system in addition to "other systems". Not sure what they are referring to. Still have a SS warning light. No codes stored. Such a PITA...
That’s a bummer!
I did this and it seemed to work, no check engine light, but I still have the auto start repair warning.. even though the fuse is gone and ground removed.. ideas?
I don't have anything displayed.
Hey rob I’m having the same problem with my gladiator dealer changed my small battery ok it was fixed only for a few days then it came back on then took it back to the dealer and now they charged me $75.00 just to turn off that light on the dash if you or someone knows how to turn off the light please let me know batteries are new thank you
I assume it takes a device of some sort to turn it off.
I’ve read that this can disable the REMOTE start feature. Anyone run into it?
Cheaper than buying a bypass device
Thx
Doe remot start still work ?
This Jeep doesn’t have remote start.
I think it's odd you're only get 10mpg, mine gets 24 mpg avg
I have a 2020 JLU and this method unfortunately didn’t work. My jeep just spent its time spazzing out upon trying to start up
Bummer.
I tried this with my 2020 gladiator and it worked fine but now i lost my backup camera and my off-road pages. Also my infotainment center looks different. Anyone else experienced this or know how to fix it? Im hoping it comes back in a couple days maybe it downloads or something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
No issues with that here.
Same thing happened to me on my 21. Put every thing back to the way it was.Took a drive then did the bypass again and everything worked fine. Maybe the computer was adjusting to the changes? All I have is a red flash on dash when I start it then it goes away. Back up camera works fine.
So I did this on my 2020 JT, no light, disconnected the negative (the correct one) and pulled the ESS fuse. Drove for about 10 minutes and worked, many stops and engine kept running. The next day, somehow the Gladiator is stopping again at a full stop. I have to push the disable button for this to work. So somehow the jeep is now using the main battery for Auto stop/start. I am miffed...help anyone
Is it possible the ground cable is contacting metal?
completely tapped off.@@robmotiveplus
Did you have dead battery issue before this too or were you just eliminating the auto start stop feature?
Followed the steps but my Auxiliary light is still on my dash board.
Do you have the Auxiliary switches?
Mine is still on the dash also. Did you ever figure it out?
I can't stand my jeep anymore because of this problem
It is annoying!
So I did this and it didn't work for me. Whenever that wire that you unplugged is not attached to the other black wire I get no power whatever. Although weirdly there's a telephone button that looks like it was installed aftermarket which blinks a blue LED. it's the only thing that works.
That’s odd?
@@robmotiveplus Turns out it was my main battery that was dead. I have a new one coming this weekend. I dunno if I talked about my jump charger in previous comments but it was broken. I got this new NEXPOW charger. it's nuts. I jumped the Gladiator 6 times and it wasn't even down to 75%. Crazy powerful charger.
Sounds like a good unit.
Jeep obviously has this problem with all its auxiliary batteries push starts. I hate it! I've spent about $2,300 for something that's still a problem. I will ask my mechanic about disconnecting this feature.
5000 miles and problems. I hate this product. buyers remorse.
Why Jeep still have this feature!!!!
Good question 🤔
Had a 2118 rubicon , the battery died Jeep couldn’t figure out what happened cost me $1,250 just to change that stinking battery
Wow😡
Don’t do this if you’re just trying to eliminate Auto Stop Start. I wasted 30 minutes of my life trying this just for that purpose. Doesn’t work for that.
I can’t speak for what you did, but for mine it’s been off ever since I did it with no issues.
@@robmotiveplus I did it verbatim. Removed the F42 fuse (ESS) and removed the smaller battery negative battery terminal. It’s obvious which negative wire because it’s the smaller diameter. I have a 2023 so it’s possible they’ve changed things electronically somehow.
@@ScottH1130 Ugh! I too have a 2023 and was cautious thinking about "what if I do this and it doesn't work"?!?! You saved me the trouble! Thanks! If I start having troubles I will give it a try - but until then, Nope. ;)
I'm in the same boat with my 2023 Willys, fuse 42 out & underhood ESS switch disengaged but motor still shuts off at lights. I will remove my auxiliary battery when it will become a parasitic drain but it seems ESS is now fed from main battery
Thank you for informative video.
No answer yet if remote key still work??
Next time loosen the big one first, then the battery terminal you do it both while it’s still on there
