      Dear PleinAirAdventureswithTezDower - Thank you for watching our program and then writing to us. We really do love creating these programs and love hearing from you! We can see that you also love going to different locations to paint. It was very magical to be walking where John Singer Sargent walked and painted! If you would like a live online workshop with David, you can also join our live online Tuesdays workshops for additional live workshops and optional personal critiques (www.daviddunlop.com). We would love to see you there. Kind regards, David and Connie.

I've only recently discovered you and your videos, but already you have inspired me and enriched my understanding of art more than pretty much anyone I've encountered. Thank you most sincerely for creating these videos.

    Watercolours are heavily dependent on paper quality. JS Sargent used French-made paper for his charcoal drawings, but used British-made paper for his watercolours. Unfortunately for us today, we use French-made watercolour paper and its derivatives, which were designed more for 20th century abstract art. It makes many Sargent's techniques and results difficult to repeat.

    • @alex24mamba
      @alex24mamba 7 месяцев назад

      Couldn't agree more. Also I've been diving into materials the greats used. I've discovered the brushes and the paints are vastly different. There's more than skill when you look at a van dyke or a sargent. I truly believe the materials are far superior. I'd imagine it being similar to the feeling of a sturdy American car from the 60s vs hopping into a Toyota corolla. We may be able to have the most advanced materials..
      But if they are built on a foundation of cheap ways to make a buck over quality, it really doesn't matter. Sometimes capitalism gets the best of us. Lol

    • @zvonimirtosic6171
      @zvonimirtosic6171 7 месяцев назад

      @@alex24mamba You're correct. Not only the papers we use were redesigned for a different purpose, but the paints we use are sourced from the manufacturing process for the automotive industry and exterior paint and coatings industry. Paints are then constantly reformulated without our consent or knowledge.
      Pigment sizes in coatings industries are 3-10x smaller than smallest art pigments of 100 years ago, which makes watercolour in particular more difficult and over-saturated. Reformulated paper and paint destroy our fine-art brushes quickly. Paper is too abrasive, destroys the brush tips; pigment is too fine, clots the hair to suboptimal performance.
      If we care about fine art at all, we need to manufacture fine art materials from scratch and specifically for art purposes, as we once used to.
