Dear Matt - Thank you very much for watching and for writing to us! We love hearing from you. Turner is certainly one of our favorite painters and a great inspiration to us. All the best, Connie and David
what do you mean? everyone in the history of art recognizes the genius of Turner and recognizes him as the greatest watercolorist and the greatest landscape artist to have ever lived.....
This was the best thing I've seen in all the "art lessons" I assisted. Thank you so much. I feel liberated... just like impressionists at the time. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Tear in my eyes, really. I am just a beginner, but this made a huge difference to my approach to painting.
Greetings David, how wonderful your on RUclips. My father and I watched your each episode of your program which aired on Museum TV in Canada. We looked forward to watch all your videos, you really have an excellent way of describing technique's with including the excellent references of the masters. It’s highly inspirational and you have done great work. The interaction with your students is nice too. I live near to the sea on the west coast and I’ve been drawn to drawing and painting it. I loved your episode were you painted the waves on the rocks on the east Coast in the US I believe. Very important to go to Europe and see the sights and the landscapes which the greats were inspired by like you have done. I will thoroughly enjoy viewing all the Episodes you have uploaded on here. Making this accessible I can’t thank you enough. Best Regards -Jurgen
It is liberating to watch you play with those vibrant colors and atmospheric effects. With the "tyranny" of reality before you, you have the courage to explore that freedom. Inspiring.
Thank you, tangiblepress! It is great to see you here again! What an inspiring comment about the "tyranny" of reality and painting! We are dDelighted you enjoyed it. Kind regards, David and Connie
Dear rtk4543 - Thank you very much for watching and for writing to us!! Turner is one of our favorite painters, and it is always fascination to see his works and experiment. All the best, Connie and David
Loved this approach - very liberating while honouring the master, Turner. And your super fast painting resulted in an explosion of colour and light - QED
Gorgeous! I really love your videos, always a fantastic combination of art instruction and art history. Thank you so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge!
Dear Longhorngal - Thank you very much for watching and for writing to us! WE love creating these programs and are happy that you enjoyed it. All the best, Connie and David
Yippee! My favorite episode is finally available. I recorded this into my hard drive recorder back in the day so i could have it on while painting and I watched it so much that eventually the drive didn’t wanna play the whole episode. And now i can watch it again and again! Your episodes really made me love landscape painting so much more than i used to. Thanks David and Connie!
Dear jeffreycollins - What a wonderful comment - it is really great to hear that a certain episode was your favorite - we love that! Good luck with your painting. Kind regards, Connie an David
Hi, Christine! Thank you so much! We are happy that you watched and delighted that you enjoyed it. So happy to hear from you! Kind regards, David and Connie
HI, ingenierofreelance - We are happy that you enjoyed it! Thank you very much for writing to us! Good luck with your paintings! All the best, Connie and David
Thank you, dawnmillett! We are happy that those phrases were meaningful. (From Connie: I don't know how David can be so insightful and paint at the same time - dazzling!) Thank you very much for watching and for writing to us! Kind regards, Connie and David
I never understood Turner's excessive use of light and edge softening, thinking it made his subjects too abstract. Now I can appreciate the battle between light and dark and the role that atmosphere plays in mediation. Thanks for that.
HI @chrislee-anneminturn5111 - We loved being in Honfleur and seeing all of the wonderful location painted by Turner - thrilling! We are delighted you enjoyed it. Kind regards, David and Connie
Thank you, David! Your videos have really been revelations for me. I've often noticed that you never use black in your studies, and I can understand this as a way of better understanding color. However, I guess I'm wondering whether black was particularly absent from the color pallets of the masters' landscapes, or whether you would be open to teaching us when we *should* use black, if ever. Thank you, Thank you.
Dear Mona - Hi - We are happy that you enjoyed it! Thank you very much for watching and for writing to us! Good luck with the field of wild glass - exciting! All the best, Connie and David
I love it when you call the class into session, I learn so much from you. Could you recommend two of your favorite books on color? Have a wonderful day. You have made my day wonderful :)
HI, Dawn! Thank you for watching and for your question. The paper for the short watercolor demonstration is usually an Arches watercolor paper which has size in it. Sometimes David also uses an acrylic polymer gloss varnish on top of that - usually applied with a paper towel - as an additional barrier. The oil painting surface was a piece of quadruple primed Belgian linen fixed to a board - because we were traveling and it gives a lovely hard surface. All the best, Connie and David
I enjoyed this episode very much until the artist began to paint on the woman’s work. I was always taught that it was a big insult, among other things, to do so. It became HIS painting, and I could see her aggravation with it. A real artist and gentleman would not have touched her painting, but coached her from the side.
I did notice that, and I generally agree. However I wonder since this was an instructional video, if they didn’t discuss this and have an understanding. She was the only student in the video. Since the video is edited, they may have discussed his approach off camera. I have worked on student’s work, but I always ask first. Anyway, the first video I have seen of his, and I am impressed by the amount of technical and aesthetic knowledge of Turner he got in. I have to go look at Dunlop’s work now.
I think instructor's help is OK, given its a learning experience for the student, ourselves watching and a video with time constraints. Being on location with light rain, not to mention our limited patience, does not allow an extended coaching session. The production considered all those things with very acceptable results. I think it rates a "well done".
They are his students and have all agreed to this. It's not a big deal. You guys need to get over yourselves. A serious painter will paint hundreds if not thousands of paintings in their lifetime. Being lucky enough to have a teacher such as David to paint a little on one or two of your practice paintings in the name of learning something is not "a big insult".
A truly informative piece. Much to admire from your translations re Turner.
Thank you David, an art professor par excellence.
Thank you for these David!❤
Giving JMW Turner the credit he deserves in the history of painting - light is the goal! I truly love this episode.

Overjoyed at seeing this David. Now trying to apply this method to a field of wild grass with no focal point. Tough call I think . Thanks

Good morning Mr. Dunlop!
