One of my heroes. The video mentioned his improved drawing as he developed his watercolor painting. Homer worked during the American Civil War, sketching battles and soldiers on site. From my own experience, capturing the fleeting moments of moving figures improves the memory and drawing of figures. As you mentioned in the video, I firmly believe working from life (and, by extension, nature) is the quickest and most honest path to improve ones skills. Homer, IMHO, benefited from more than most from working from life. This video is a wonderful example and lesson. Thanks again for this channel and the insights into one of the great masters of watercolor....and observation. Looking forward to the next masterclass in our craft.
Some 15 years ago the Art Institute of Chicago had a dual exhibition of watercolors by Edward Hopper and Winslow Homer. MEMORABLE. They even had Homer's paint box and brushes on display.
This was a very good video! Besides the magnificent pictures, I enjoyed very much the vignettes of his life. Thank you for putting this wonderful documentary together.
Thank you so much for this brilliant video of Winslow Homer. I have several books about him, but your thorough, thoughtful and respectful commentary brought him and his paintings to life. Thank you again.
Thank you for conveying so much about this remarkable American artist. Everything was honest, and accurate in describing his art and who he was. I have seen other recent exhibitions that have turned his work into political agendas and it was so upsetting. I will consider never entering the Met again!
Another wonderful presentation. Nice selection of Homer's work. Nice to see images of his studio in Prout's Neck too, which I have yet to visit. Many thanks.
Winslow Homer is one of my favorite watercolor artists. I enjoyed learning more about him and viewing some of his extensive collection of drawings and paintings. Thank you for posting!
"the mysterious power of unerring choice." Yes, that, to me, encapsulates Winslow Homers watercolors. From color and tonal relationships, composition, massing, and subject matter. Homer's artistic judgement was extraordinary. I bet when he accidentally spilled his morning coffee on his placemat, it resulted in a beautiful image.
GLIAA: Stellar presentation of my favorite artist; beautiful selection of paintings; instructive commentary by one (or his writer) who actually knows paint. !Gracias!
I live very near where he painted Snap The Whip. I learned this quite by accident while taking a walk on the rail trail in Hurley, NY. Being one of my favorite artists, learning this about him adds to my admiration and respect.
The expressions in the paintings cannot be captured by a photo camera. They are emitting a strong chemistry of %100 human involvement. Thanks for the presentation.
I love these mini art documentaries. One of my very favorite painters. Homer, Sargent, and William Trost Richards are three of America's greatest watercolorists. Perhaps you might consider doing a segment sometime on Richards as well.
I really enjoy these videos-they’re fantastic! It would be wonderful to see more women artists featured on the channel. I haven’t seen any so far, and there are so many incredible women masters to discover and appreciate. Thank you for considering this!
Thank you for this. I thought I had seen all of Homer's watercolors, but there are many in your presentation that I had missed. Many thanks.
He took note of light and color..his gestures were not exaggerated. A moment caught in time..no more no less .This post is greatly appreciated.
Wonderful, thanks
No words..Homer’s art speaks for itself.! Brilliant!
Fantastic

The photograph at 14:19 depicts Homer, Sam, and Homer's father, not "a friend. "
Duly noted.
Too good to ignore
My favoriate
Hard to be so alone and honest
😮
It’s watercolours but with attention to and capture of detail.
He Was The Best Watercolor Painter That Ever Lived Beautiful 😍
