- Documentary film about the development of the art of American painter Winslow Homer (1836-1910). Art historian John Wilmerding guides us through Homer’s early illustrations of the Civil War, picturesque scenes in the country and at the shore, and the powerful images of nature, particularly scenes of fishing boats and the sea, that characterize his mature work. Also visits places identified with Homer’s life and work. This 29-minute film was produced in 1986 by the National Gallery of Art.

Happy birthday. Enter Islam and success
Homer Winslow is so marvelous. I have never been more happy and ecstatic in my life to see his work.
Fantastic artist. He said "talent is nothing but continual hard work done the right way"
The cameraman did an amazing job in capturing Artist's possible view of nature.
I am glad that this video was shared on RUclips. The same producers created series of artists documentaries at the time. Worth watching. Thanks
After watching - twice - a brill exhibition showing many of Homer’s iconic paintings from the Met, I thoroughly enjoyed learning all
about Homer - thank you
A deeply moving tribute to a soulful man .
One of my favorite artists of all time.
He is one of my favorite artists.
As clear, concise and unhurried review of the artist's work and life as any non specialist could want and quite unlike too many more recent presentations is not overproduced and cluttered by trivia and message.
Not necessarily among my favorite artists, but a respectable talent nonetheless and worth the time spent looking at his painting; with the help of first rate narration.
I've loved Homer's work since I was a child. I loved to look at the painting of the boys playing "Crack the Whip" in an art book of my parents when I was a child. This was a very nice documentary. Thanks for posting.
A healing video.!
Very informative & well presented. Thank you.
Thank You very much for info Great Artist.
What a wonderful story...!!
Excelente. Gracias.
Lovely!
Very good indeed.
Love his oils but I go gaga over his watercolors.
He is still considered the greatest American water colorist. His water colors show emotion the way a picture can never do.
26:36 Was it so that Homer died without having any children
It's true, he never married or had children. He cut off many female admirers -rudely sometimes- to avoid their insecurities and toxic drama.
@ Where can I find out more about this artist?
@Catsoverdogs444 I found studies and rare facsimiles of his paintings and drawings in New York public library, that was a few years ago before the renovations they introduced, now almost everything there is online!
Interesting if somewhat of an over romanticized story of the man who I believe was the the first or at least one of the first artists to bring French impressionism to the shores of American culture.
With Respect To All . I know very little about paintings I have apainting of this Artist what do I do with it ?
