The 8-Bit Big Band "One Minute Bytes" #16 - "Athletic Theme" from Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (Gameboy). One of my most played games of all time growing up! I used to just sit still in the levels that had this music and listen to it as long as I could, that is until the timer ran out and Mario died!
One Minute Bytes is our series of short videos dedicated to melodies and themes from within video games that deserve to be arranged even if they might not be the main theme of said game. Hope you enjoy these small, sharable, bite sized chunks of video game music!

This high-energy, pop 50's "Jetson's" take is the bee's knees! Many, many thanks for brightening my day with every release!
Was just gonna say it reminds me of a Hana-Barbera cartoon.
@@mrshmuga9 Their One Minute Byte of "The Sims 1: Buy Mode 2" as well as the frantic World 2-3 experience in their Let's Play LIVE! #1: Super Mario Bros. are very much in the same vein of "Optimistic Americana" sound. Very much worth a listen and possibly my favorite style that they re-create.
@@BrentDiskin Just listened. Both are also great!
Theres an album I love on spotify called "The Golden Age of Light Music: Motorway - Production Music of the 1960s" that I love so much and it definitely has an influence on me
@@The8BitBigBand Thank you so much for the recommendation! I have the Ultra Lounge complete collection, as well as a ton of peppy works from the era that I use for my own personal projects from time to time. They, like your and your musicians' efforts never fail to bring a smile to my face. I'll be looking this one up for certain!
Wow, it really feels like an old Hannah-Barbera cartoon intro, and the length of the track makes it feel even authentic. Somebody make a HB-style Mario opening credit.
It's very "meet George Jetson" vibe haha
The upbeat and uptempo arrangement of this piece makes it sound like the opening to a Saturday morning cartoon from the 90's.
sounds more 60s than 90s, but it's very good
@@ink1931 There was a big retro moment in kids animation in the 90s, so it tracks one would hear the 90s in this!
Yes a lot of the cartoons I grew up watching in the 90's were from much earlier. I think Looney Toons and the old Hanna Barbara cartoons were from the 50's and 60's.
@@ink1931 To add to John’s point, Animaniacs had similar music and was made in the 90’s, but clearly influenced by the 60’s run of Looney Tunes. It’s really the xylophone that makes it.
Yeah this arrangement has strong Animaniacs/Tiny Toons vibes and I love it
This sounds like the opening theme to an old-timey sitcom...and I love that!
Me too.
Thanks to Brentalfloss I can NEVER unhear the starting lyric of 'Wario has MAJOR BALLS / Mario's castle, is missing a wall...' but I absolutely love the Hanna-Barbera energy in this rendition!
Ahaha same here
Since when did he have a castle at all?
“Look guys look! It’s one of MARIO’s greatest achievement. Super Mario Land 2”

But whatever, dude, now he’s on the move! (Yah! Wah! Wahaa!)
YES! By far one of the most underrated Mario themes ever! And this version sounds sooooo good!
🏆From the Grammy Awards.
🎮🎶 I'm listening to this music from Japan.
It's a crime that this song is so short. It's amazing!
Well it sounds just like the intro to some old sitcom. So the the length is perfect
Yeah I’m gonna need at least three more minutes of this
Holy crap this gives me looney tunes vibes, I’m sure if I heard this in a cartoon it’d take me a bit to even realize it’s Mario!
This game had such amazing music
I can't remember for certain, but I'm pretty sure Super Mario Land 2 was the first video game I ever played, so I'm _really_ glad this version of the song exists. This rendition is _amazing,_ thanks so much for making it!
I think this one deserves longer than 1 minute! That was awesome!
wow, one of the first games I ever played in my life, and one of my favorite gameboy games, which I still own original! Keep up the good work!
Whyyyyu one minuteeeeee !!! This game deserves an entire remix / remake of its ost !!! It’s so beautiful and your version made me tear in joy

Three videos at once?! But hey I’m not complaining, this slaps.
From start to finish, this is a masterpice
Big Band meets Game Boy! Love it!
Look at that drummer go! Fantastic, everyone!
I really hope you guys make a full-length version of this like you did with gourmet race. This is so good!
I love the arrangement, performance, and editing. How come there are never any shots of the mallet percussionist in these videos?
Your one minute bites are so good, I wish we could hear full versions of these songs.
I need a longer version of this! 😅
Ah man I love this so much I wish it could be longer! But I'm super happy ya'll did this
I didn't know I needed to hear this, but now I know I needed this
there is no way to put into words how much joy i get out of this arrangement. fantastic job all around, yall
Makes me think of the theme to the Flintstones. Nice work.
About the description: the soundtrack of this game was composed by Kazumi Totaka, not Hirokazu Tanaka
Man, your 1-minute bytes are always such a pleasure, seriously hoping you ever consider releasing extended versions in a soundtrack some day!
usually these 1-minute bytes are just previews of the upcoming album. at least this was always the case in the past.
@@DerNivel seriously hope this is the case, they're dropping non-stop fire left and right.
UNDERRATED THEME FR
LIKE HOLY CRAP THE HIGH ENERGY IS LIKE EVERYTHING
I've come back to listen to this so many times 'cause of how few other quality covers of Mario Land 2 exist. I know y'all probably have a bunch of other songs to cover and don't hold RUclips comment section suggestions as a priority, but I would absolutely love to hear your band's take on a song from the Wario Land series! (Or Wario World, since that basically counts too.)
I love this arrangement so much 😍 This is the theme of my childhood and probably my favorite Mario theme of all time ^^ I'd be endlessly grateful to you if you made a full version some day 😁
This is excellent stuff! An amazing, boisterous, knee-slapping rendition of a Gameboy classic!
I was never a fan of this theme but you guys made it so enjoyable and fun to listen to!! Absolute favorite, great work
Casually drops 3 songs lol,🔥 per usual
One of my favorite games as a kid. You are such pros. True geniuses. Keep going!
Love the Spielberg 90s toon vibes so much.
There's our hero, Mario
You rescued Daisy, but I'm sorry, bro
Nevermind, Brentalfloss has full lyrics.
For two days ago, I broke into your home,
And now it's Château WAAARIO!
That's-a all, folks!
Good, good, morning USA
I've got a feeling that is gonna be a wonderful day
The sun in the sky has a smile on it's face
And it's shining a salute to the American race, race
OH BOY ITS SWELL TO SAAAAY…..
Turn up the bassoon
Wow, superb quality!
Good to see this series is still a thing. And actually a minute this time!
This is so fucking good
Amazing as always
BAM! RIGHT IN THE CHILDHOOD
I don't see anyone credited for the Xylophone?
The xylophone is MIDI.
Amazing!!!
Great work again!
I want more minutes of this tune!
The first video game I ever owned, arranged and performed outstandingly. Thank you all.
gosh love the writing on this
This is just stupidly good.
YES.
So good!
I absolutely love it! 😍
Wow I LOVE IT!!!!
We saving Princess Daisy with this one 💯💯🔥🔥🥶🥶
The return of the king
Just glorious
This is excellent and intense
Wow!! So good!
Genius!
Incredible Amazing Wahahaha!!!
OK this is awesome but my only quibble is that the mallet instrument folks got no screen time! Pretty sure there was some banging xylophone, glockenspiel, vibrophone, and chimes in there!
Don't tell anybody but the mallets are MIDI ): if I had all the money in the world I would rent all that stuff and actually have someone play it... maybe one day!
@@The8BitBigBand if you get the instrument just tell me when and where
Keep up the great stuff! :)
@@The8BitBigBand Did you at least use GOOD/realistic sounding MIDI mallets?
WIIIILLLMAAAA
Oh man... THE NOSTAAAAAALLLLLGIA
Welcome back
The ones that become super popular usually influence me to make full versions :) It happened with Spring Yard Zone and Gourmet Race and then ended up on our albums!
@@The8BitBigBand True! I loved the Spring Yard byte, and seeing that get a full version was so exciting. It’s still one of my favorites! And Gourmet Race’s full version is excellent as well. Hoping this will get popular as well - but looking forward to future material in general!
Sounds like a Mario Odyssey New Donk City take on the song. Amazing.
The music sounds like the music from Hanna Barbera!
All of your music are bangers! Think you'd consider doing some music from Banjo? I'd love to hear your take on Gobi's Valley, Spiral Mountain, Click Clock Wood, or even the theme. I could also die happy if I got to hear you guys perform DK Swing
Holy shit
Wow, wow, wow!!!!!! You rock!!!!! 🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟
Well that's in my head all day. 🤣
Wario DOES exude HB villain vibes…
I woke up on some odd day
I’m gonna feel it the unusual way
There's lots of stuff that I wanna do
but there’s only one that I just can’t place it
We’ve got what you’re looking for
and Mushroom Kingdom, it’s not what you think
We’re gonna do stuff that we’re gonna do because
We’re gonna pass the test
Lots of work can be done in the kingdom
But the enemies are out of control
Every day is a day that must be great
Without ever even paying the toll
Say hello to all our friends
Ladies and gentles, the fun never ends
Now is the time to go jumping along with
Super Mario Land 2.
I reposted the lyrics but this time, no BrentalFloss references.
Where are THESE lyrics from?
@@GreenBoy9000 , Good question. I got it from my mind. Trust me, It's original.

Mario MerryGoRound Music 😎
This feels like a Christmas songs instrumental
Lol, this is great, but a little ragtime piano breakdown where everyone rests for a while would have been cute
I'll remember this if I ever make a full version
@@The8BitBigBand 👀
At this tempo, such a feat would require TWO pianists.
You know, you could be right, but it’d be all too satisfying and you know it ;)
Never thought of Mario as a Family Guy... 🤔
Where are those good old fashioned values
I wonder if you guys could do the Fever theme of Doctor Mario!
It's as if Hoyt Curtin collaborated with Carl Stalling and Scott Bradley. #IYKYK
Honestly feeling very seen by your references hahah
I feel like this upbeat tempo can work for the show called Animaniacs.
Mario if he was the funny family guy
baby boss win theme
Revisiting this video to say I'm doing a 365 Days of Music challenge this year, and I chose this for Day 279! My comments on it are below:
**Day 279:** "Super Mario Land 2: Athletic Theme - One Minute Bytes #16 (The 8-Bit Big Band)"
The Super Mario Bros. Movie got its first trailer. I have a lot of thoughts about it, but let's just say I really want to see this movie.
Let's say that this theme captures my excitement and wonderment at what just happened.
This is one of my personal favorite main themes for a Mario game, and the title is understandably quite overlooked -- Super Mario Land 2 is a solid game and a technical feat for the Game Boy. It's not one of Mario's best adventures, but it's certainly not one of his worst.
This theme sounds like the opening to a crazy, fun extravaganza of entertainment. The curtain has been raised, everyone's dancing on stage, people are on unicycles, the whole bit. And this stellar arrangement dials this feeling up to 100. The xylophone adds a circus-y flair, while the drums (especially the bongos) create this rapid, zany energy like someone's trying their absolute hardest not to slip on a banana peel for about a minute straight. Yet, despite the goofier elements of this track, the strings are elegant and grandiose and the piano is subtle but charming, adding a depth and complexity to the track that would certainly be missed without it. And only on my...what, fifteenth listen did I even *notice* the mallet instruments behind the main melody throughout much of the song. And the chimes! The tubular bell chimes!
There's just SO MUCH GOING ON HERE, but it all works wonderfully well. We have a wonderful balance of quantity and quality here: the kind of balance that is achieved by just having a ton of both.
You’re spot on! My idea was definitely imagining if Mario is ever a Broadway show this would be part of the overture haha
If Hanna-Barbera made a Mario cartoon in the late 60s this would have been the opening theme.
Do I have your permission to use this music in my video?
Wario has major balls….
oh im image mario vs wario is popeye type comedy show...
TURN UP THE BASSOON I CANT HEAR THE BASSOON
happy S.Patrick's day !
Is this a Mario or a Wario moment?
Sounds like Animaniacs
put this over a tf2 character ai thing now
