I was a goalie in the 80’s... play three periods, they absorb water, and get heavier....
The inside of these are nylon so I think because they flared out like a modern pads they didn’t soak up too much water. But I can imagine how heavy they’d be if I landed on the face more
Back when I played with a catcher like that (I few decades ago - in my early 20's, when I started playing a little goal), I had a lot of shots go in and out of the pocket (and more that went in the net). My older set of leather pads had deer hair in them and leaked into the inside of my hockey bag. Did you have the separate chest and arm protector? (remember that - my chest protector was a solidly built Brown one, the arms were Cooper and had, to be charitable, little protection - even with extra padding duct taped on.
The old brown leather pads (32" Winwells) I had I laced up a lot tighter than the ones I use now (still leather but not deer hair era old) - especially the top straps. They seemed to mold to your legs, but the extra water weight by the end of the game (especially when the Zamboni pours on the water and leaves your crease like a swimming pool) plus the exhaustion to an out of shape guy made things challenging.
This is the kind of content the goalie world needs, love the contrast between vintage and modern. Absolutely epic
Definitely gives a new perspective to the position
Amazing how the equipment has changed, and how much equipment effects goaltending style
For sure. Definitely a totally different workout too
Unreal! Love the muscle memory that puts you right into the RVH all the time lol
Every. Damn. Time. 😂
Hes rocking the 198o Vladislav tretchak look.
I played a few open hockey sessions with a guy who used a set of vintage pads, including a Mike Luit-style mask. His gear was in amazingly good condition. I had more fun watching him play in that vintage gear than I did tending my own net.
Hahaha is probably get caught up watching that too. That how I feel when I watch Cooper Goalie’s videos
Best helmet ever! I still have mine since 80's 🤩
Love my SK combos. So comfortable!
THE NHL '94 MUSIC MAKES IT SO MUCH BETTER
Haha you might be the first one to call that out
Yep I need Bonesy mic’d up more
Gotta keep up with your mic’d up gold! Might have to upgrade out of the AirPods too.
I’d agree with this.
Awesome! I played goal in the 80s well into juniors and this is great to see:)
That was awesome to see. Brings me back to when I first started playing at age 16(29 years ago). I had the Cooper GM 9 glove/blocker. Was supposed to have the heavy GP 58 leg pads, but they were on back order at the time and the store gave me the GP 2000's(Cooper's first foam insert leg pads) instead.
That shorter stick was so 70's and prior... the butterfly was just starting in the late 80's when the pads of today's were made for... the goalies prior to that were more floppers... and they didn't wear pads/chest protectors that made them difficult to miss... of course players of today are better shot than back then too.
Yeah I have no clue how guys back in the day played the puck
@@BonesyTV Well, you have to realize that prior to the 70's, not many really used the upper part of the net.. most shots came in low. The slap shot was also not used like it is today. So the shorter stick kept them closer to the ice where the puck most like was to come to anyway. As we got the 70's, shots started to come in higher, and harder/faster.. standup goalies started showing up which led to the butterfly goaltenders of today thus the change in gear over that migration. Goalies of old tended to stay away from handling the puck.. but they could still do it...
It would be fun to play with a group of players with vintage sticks. No clue what playing goalie is like without shots up high
Bonsey you’re a trip dude lol
Oh man this brings me back. Love the old gear.
Make vintage gear great again!!
I was cracking up the entire video. 😂
Great stuff, looks like a ton of fun.
Haha good times for sure!
Man I really need to try this one day, looks like a ton of fun haha
I highly recommend it. Under the right circumstances of course
Nice job :D. Open ice standard warm up: one in the boys and two in the head. Followed by two shots, at the same time.
😂😂 classic
That was hilarious. Love the running commentary.
Hahaha might have had too much fun with that part
i have a pair of ccm pads from the 70s and if you want to have a leg workout you go with those. Honestly, I have found they work almost better than todays pads
YES! This is great!
😂😂
How many stingers did you get with that glove lol. It looked like a blast.
Only a couple stingers. Felt everything that didn’t go in the pocket though
Great stuff man. Subscribed enjoyed watching you playing the stuff that I played in and Junior high School and high school. you can truly say that you are playing a hybrid style of goldending. Modern pro fly with old school stand up. Nicely done.
Thanks! Adding more tools to the toolbox
Hell yeah. Nice setup. I love the old school style and pads. So much fun. I laughed out loud when you said you were going to try RVH, I was like Oh ha, good luck. Pulling the legs together and stepping out with your glove all the way down works SURPRISINGLY well off the post. The good habits/bad habits comment is also super true. Contemporary and old school goaltending are more incompatible than I expected when making the change over to a stand up style. If you try this again try taking a position about 1 foot further out and close the legs just a bit. The shooters box to score will be either low glove or low blocker. So its only a kick or a small glove move. Its less to look out for making you reactions quicker. The hardest part after that is just trusting that what you are doing is going to work and to fight the urge to go down just to avoid looking like you aren't trying.
Yeah it’s WAY harder than I expected
So cool!
Idk why but I love vintage gear it’s fascinating for me I really like the old helmets when they first started wearing them and of course the blocker and everything also I am 12 years old playing middle school AAA as a goalie and I was wondering what to do pre skate wise and off ice and how to break in a chest protector.
I think someone posted a pic of you on one of the Facebook goalie groups.
Very cool .
As a 40 year old who had deer hair stuffed pads as a kid. I can appreciate how heavy they get. Also how they dont slide.
Also there is so many spots to get hit with old gear.
You did a great job attacking the puck rather than waiting for the shot.
Thanks! And yeah I have a new found respect for anyone who whore this stuff back in the day
Saw clips of this video on Instagram, loving the content man keep it up!
Thanks man! Gotta figure out how to follow it up now
Sick video! Music was perfect and you dialed up the canadian real good, bud!
Oh yeah bud! Gotta love goin out for a rip with da boys! 😂
The pads look sick Dustin! You played really well in them! Great video!!
Thanks man! Definitely a different beast playing in it all
@@BonesyTV I believe it.
Nice! I really enjoyed this. :)
Thanks man! Had a lot of fun with this one
Man that’s awesome. I would love to strap on the old school pads
It’s a whoooooole new world
Love this! I’ve been working on the exact opposite...dropping old school habits to go with new pads!
The old school style is definitely an art form. No way you can drop them completely
@@BonesyTV I think it may be impossible to erase 40 years of old school wiring - definitely freaks out some of the kids in my league
I absolutely loved that video!!! The two pad stack though.......
Gotta get the stack down now
@@BonesyTV That was a pretty good one in this video.
Poke check double pad stack! Have to throw one of those out at least once a game even in new gear. Works great on a righty coming down glove side on a break... especially if you bait them into going upstairs!!!!
Hahaha gotta add that to the ole tool box
Nice video man. Looks like you were having a good time. Is this the start of a vintage goalie pick-up series?
Thanks! And I’m not sure. I definitely have some fun vintage stuff in mind though.
My calves and shins are burning just watching this.
I wasn’t kidding when I said my legs were jello. Totally forgot open goes for an hour and a half too
I think you played pretty well!!! The Pads were a Senior Pad the knees didn't wrap around.. also no calf Guards The calf guards were felt anyways.... Back in the day I had problems catching the Puck with the leather pocket.... Great Job!!!!
Yeah catching pucks with that thing was a challenge.
I also agree that the toe bridge has to go!!! Maybe Nash Sports can make a set of toe buckles for you
That would be awesome. I definitely want to put buckles on there
0:25 NHL '94 music!! Nice!
Couldn’t pass up the opportunity
I used my old Curtis Curve for warm-ups for fun once, fully intending to use it in the game. It was so heavy that I stopped after warm-up.
You gotta commit!!! Haven’t seen a Curtis curve in years btw
NHL 94 music. Johnathan Quick is probably the only goalie that uses stand up techniques in the NHL.
Yeah!! And I always called quicks style the crab style
This is an awesome video
Haha thanks!
I was laughing throughout that. Now you have an appreciation for the weight of our equipment. I’d like to see the gloves, pants, and chest/arms reduced back to that size. Make goalies out of goalies again, rather than positioned blocking masses.
You should’ve tried a straight stick.
That would be super interesting. Assuming they could make the gear just as protective though. And I actually have an old Hextall stick with no curve. It’s pretty beat up so I didn’t want to break it completely
this looks harde!
Hahaha it definitely took some getting used to
I bet it was all worth it after stacking those pads for that save!
Oh absolutely! Felt awesome to pull that off
Where did you get knees that bend in all directions? I love the old gear and the fact that you're working in the old playing styles (and actually doing it well) is hilarious and impressive. Even the tunes were perfect. Genius!!
Got the last set at the knee store!! Not sure when they’re restocking them though 😉
@@BonesyTV Dude that's funny. We don't have a knee store up here, dang it.
I remember using that type gear. Alot of your save selection is to not get a stinger lol.
I learned that pretty quick. Definitely shied away from that one that went glove. Not sure if it’s worse getting scored on or the bruise after stopping it
Might have to wear that combo at camp..
I’ll go ahead and sanitize it for ya. Maybe even a two week quarantine just to be safe 😂😉
@@BonesyTV perfect, you can leave it in my stall;)
Your quite good with your blocker side. What is RVH?
Old school blocker saves are super fun. But RVH is a new school way to play the post. Stands for reverse horizontal
Those coopers are lit i think there better
Bonesy....how tight did you run the straps? I landed a pair of 34 inch vaughns (ritcher-essena colors) and may wanna give em a go
I keep them pretty tight!! The top ones I kept kinda loose but you’ll just have to play around with it. For most part of say keep ‘em tight
What kind of mic are you using? We're looking into doing that stuff as well for our channel. More content the better
I just use my AirPods and sync it up with my phone. 🤷♂️ For sure want a new mic setup though.
How's did the glove saves turn out? My hand was eaten alive lol i had some guys on the ice who can let it rip haha how was strapping in the toe buckles?
I had couple pretty decent stingers. But nothing too crazy. I can imagine if guys were rippin em at me they’d kill. But the pads don’t have the buckles. They had toe bridge and laces when I got them 🤷♂️
The stance at 9:46 is mint
Started settling in to it at that point. Felt legit at least
Congrats to all the attention this got. Did you originally share it in GGSU?
Thanks man! And nah I think someone else did.
where did u get the helmet from? What is the name/model of it?
The helmet is a Cooper SK2000 and it has a HM30 cage
Where did you get these pads? I've been looking for a set like these.
Guy by the name of Kyle Mayer found them for me. Set me up with the guy selling them not too long ago
where did you get your helmet
Facebook groups!! There’s couple good ones out there
Are you interesed in selling the JOFA leather pads? My girlfriends dad used to play hockey with a set like yours and it would be awesome if I got those as a present for him!
You look like Tony O out there.
You just a need a beer gut and you'd be an authentic 80s goalie
Haha working on it!
@@BonesyTV you look ready to sign a 12,000/per year contract as a back-up for Hartford
I mean at this point I’d probably take it 😂
9:35 what you all came to see.
😂😂😂 not wrong tho
Yo i go to the same rink lol
Ford ice baby!!
lolll... Amazing... But yeah, you'll be worse after this !! :-D
hahaha keeping the body guessing with the two different styles
Yeap good old real leather, soaks up water and heavy as hell smells bad and not to protected. When men where men Those were the days
The puck takes on a whole Jew persona that’s for sure
To judge the equipment more accurately you should get somebody who's a little younger and better than this guy not to say at all that he's trash.
