- NOTE: No matter how much I prepare for these videos, no matter how many times I review it during editing..it seems I'm destined to make a major error. I mistakenly said the pads are stuffed with horse hair when in fact it is DEER hair. (think this came off of saying "horsehide" for the blocker palm and it was stuck in my head).
Also..early goaltenders used CRICKET pads...not lacrosse pads. Again..I cannot believe I said that and then didn't catch it in editing. Sorry for any confusion folks.

Since I'm still not back to playing, I decided to show off some of the most spectacular gear in my collection.
I have actually taken all this gear out on the ice and I did include some photos and video of that, but mostly this video is just to share some information about these special pieces.
Included in this video are some 1960's Cooper-Weeks gloves, and 1950's Kenesky pads (the same style worn by Gump Worsley and Johnny Bower).
I really do love this gear, and the history behind it. Hopefully videos like this will help others appreciate it as well.

Were you aware when the goalie blocker changed its size? Besides the curve and hand protection.

The pads without the top knee rolls were known as a Turk Broda model , pads with the top roll was the Harry Lumley model Lumley wanted extra roll on top for shots above the knee

I think the missing vertical roll was to help the
goalie get up after going down to make a save. I've found that the outside roll sometimes gets in the way when trying to roll back onto your knees to stand up after a save.
Could be part of the reason, but I think flexibility at the knee is more likely the primary reason.
I think it's because the Gumper and Bower really just didn't buy much new equipment, so they just kept them into the 60s and 70s.
Also, the Covid mask with the holes is genius

Charles, thanks for the class. I feel like I'm learning information I couldn't get anywhere else and it's fascinating. Growing up my goalie buddies had old leather pads (not this old) and they constantly had them repaired/modified. There was a shoe repair shop in our town and the guy was a character. His motto with the hockey kids was "No buy new - You break, I fix". Pretty sure he replaced felt liners with canvas material like you have here.
The canvas overlay was a popular repair. They didn’t have to do much disassembly by using it as just a cover over the issue.
Love the old gear!!!! Just to make note the old pads where stuffed with Deer Hair not Horse Hair and the first pads were Cricket Pads the problem goalies had with them is that the puck would skip off them a go in the net they weren't made for blocking..

Holy crap! I can’t believe I said HORSE hair! And yep...cricket. Man, I really blew it on this one. I do know those things and cannot for the life of me figure out why I said them incorrectly.
Maybe because they also used horsehide???
@@anthonyedwards4975 yeah. I had just talked about the horsehide palm on the blocker, that’s my excuse and I’m sticking with it 😂
When did the block stop changing sizes’? No answer anywhere on the internet. With those 50’s descriptions, it looks the same size today, besides the curve and hand protection.
I absolutely enjoy this content about vintage goalie gear! The repro fibro mask is definitely high quality; and to think, some 70s goalies would widen the eye holes! 😬 Your take on veteran tenders keeping with leg pads without the lateral knee roll seems spot on. They were comfortable with mere convention and more knee flexion. Side note: Growing up, I’d hear people reference leg pads as “kickers”.
The mask looks like a Fibro sport mask ,by Jacques Plante made in Magog Quebec
Yes, similar in style, but not a Fibrosport. Definitely a reproduction I'm just not 100% sure by who.
Do you have the style of catching glove Ken Dryden wore? We called it the elephant glove as it resembles the shape of an elephant's trunk.
My older brother had that style of glove.
I guess I’m not exactly sure what glove you’re talking about. I only recall Ken using a modified GM9 followers by the GM21. Those both have the typical cooper look to them.

I'm not sure the model name but where most catching gloves back then had a rounded or square shape to the catching pocket perimeter, Ken Dryden's was elongated, not rounded off. My older brother used one when he played minor hockey back in the 70's.
If you look at Ken Dryden pictures or videos you will get the idea of what it looked like. It was so cool looking. But then I'm biased as Ken Dryden was my sports hero back then, especially when I too played goal in minor hockey.
Blocker looks like André the Giant size lol

Perephrial vision seems like it was a problem with those older masks.
I don't find it to be much different.
@@CooperGoalie Hey have you ever thought of the idea of a see through old school type mask? I think this would be a cool idea to market for example a Bernie Parent transparent mask (jaw protecter).

How does that trapper feel to catch with? Is it a more natural or less natural feel than something like a GM-12 which has a different angle to the glove. I don't like the GM-12 feel and am wonderibg whether this less angled claw feels more natural. I realize it is small and has little protectiin.
The stiffness of the cuff is hard to adjust to. And the palm has almost no protection in it. You feel every puck...some considerably more than others.
You’ll see in the footage at the end, I really felt one I caught near the beginning, and others I more or less just used it to bat the puck away.
I thought the older equipment was better in a lot of ways it seemed to be more formed fitted for comfort maybe not as light as the newer stuff but better for agility and athleticism.
Looking for a goalie in mount Clemens at 6:35...
I noticed with the newer pads goalies don't stand up anymore they slide across the crease does the padding have anything to do with this.
The older style of pad wasn't made for a butterfly slide. Modern pads are flat and made from synthetics that create less friction on the ice.
@@CooperGoalie uh OK if you say so but Tony Esposito was one of only a few "butterfly"style goaltenders back then I remember most of them being more stand up style im 55 years old.
@@karlcooper8460 butterfly and butterfly slide are two different things. Tony O didn’t b-fly slide from post to post.
