- Nothing like the smell of vintage leather in the morning. Couldn't wait to get these pads out of the box and look forward to jumping on the ice with them. Also a pretty interesting story about the relationship between JOFA, Bourdon, Audax, and Vaugh. Now that I have a sweet vintage set you can expect some fun vintage videos in the near future!!

I remember the Mike Vaughn pads made for Jofa when I sold Hockey equipment in the 80's.
I played in the 70s and 80s YOU NEED TO PROPERLY WATERPROOF YOUR PADS AND THEY WON'T GET ANY HEAVIER . I still have most of my vintage equipment. I took care of them and they are still around and used 40-45 years later . many goalies didn't take care of their stuff

Cool stuff. The toes had, you guessed it, more buckles!! Haha. A buckle on each side and another leather strap. Just add more weight. Ken Dryden was a giant at 6'4" in the 70s. Thanks for this video, made me flashback to watching Dryden as a kid.

Haha my thoughts exactly! But then again I’d also be rocking my modern true skates so there’s that part too. But we’ll get there 😉

It paid to be a smaller guy in goal when quickness, agility & flexibility were the keys to goal tending. Ken Dryden was one of the few bigger guys.
Sorry If I seem to shortchange today's goalies, but the guys who wore these style of pads were the most exciting to watch. Individuality and artistry between the pipes is a thing of the past.
yeah the position has gotten a bit robotic. not nearly as much excitement or drama
You have a really Cool channel!!! These pads are cool, but I would say they are a “mid level” goal pad. With the lack of the inner leg protection, and what looks like nylon in the five hole zone rather than the leather rolls continuing around. As someone has mentioned two toe buckles and a toe strap would complete the vintage look. I would get some inner leg protection customized as well, the leg channel on those looks really shallow. Generally most goalies would strap the bottom straps fairly tight, and then looser at the upper calf, and quite loose at the knee and top strap so the pad would turn when you butterfly. Common heights were 29” or 32” and the taller they were, the more expensive they were. So, budget (at the amateur level) and being able to skate and move better was a factor in how tall of a pad you wore. Try wedging those pads under the bench in the dressing room to get that nice S curve in them!

This is fantastic. The first pads I played in for house league were Coopers the rink owned that looked basically exactly like that.

I had the Jofa Bourdon version of those pads in 36”. I worked for a hockey shop and the Jofa rep had 4 pair of 36” that were going to Jerry Cheevers. Jerry was keeping 2 and I got one of the sets he didn’t want. I was the envy of everyone that saw them.

@@BonesyTV Nope sold them when I hit 50. They were beautiful when they were brand new. I can still remember opening the box. That was before goaltending became mechanical. Had custom CCM Goalie Skates too. They made patterns from my feet and they were perfect out of the box. All my money went to hockey equipment.

I start goalie in 1987 with the same thing but with DR pads and same gloves! When they come wet the come so heavy!!!

The first goalie pictures I ever saw (in 1998/1999) was of Cheevers and Ken Dryden so I feel ya 👍🏻
Yeah seeing pictures of guys like that definitely got my interest in vintage goalies at an early age
What do you think of the Kennesky retro line? Their vintage line looks very similar to this pad too!
They look pretty sweet!! Love that their continuing the vintage gear. BUT, Glen Miller is still making LEGIT vintage gear out of his shop at his house. Same materials as he would have used back in the day too.

The original set up toe is 2 buckles on each side of the toe and you use a 5-6 inches strap, you attach the strap on one side, pass under the skate and attach to the other buckle :P. You have nothing in the middle of the toe its like a U shape! 😅
Yeah I need to track down a set of toe buckles. The laces do the job for now though
I played in those! Except they had an inner leg protector, and they were white. Amazing pads. But heavy.

Crazy how we put a man on the freaking moon in '69 but guys were wearing this all the way up to the late 80s... I wonder how much of it was really due to not having the technology and how much of it was just bad/lazy design...
