- The second edition of the BarDown ShowDown...the game show where the challenges are made up and the points do matter (sorta)! This time around the team goes back to the 80's to see how difficult it was to score...tie their laces up for a slow lap time...and try to recreate Ovechkin's iconic back-sliding goal.

Grant Fuhr is in the HOF with a .887 and a 3.38 GAA. Doesn't matter though, dude turned it on late in close games when it mattered most.
That's why efforts were made- even in the '80s- to quantify many things in NHL hockey. A couple of guys named Klein and Reif published a few Hockey Compendiums back then that made solid and interesting attempts to go well beyond raw data like goals against and save percentage plus/minus. etc. Hockey is a team sport. Look at Fuhr. His raw numbers look odd. How could he be so great with those numbers? His personal stats don't exist in a vacuum. What his teams did- and did not do- all had a bearing.
Every time I see Vince in net doing something he always deserve so much respect for doing his job so well! Including the challenges during actual games!

Put a bunch of different famous moves (Forsberg, Datsyuk, Svechnikov, etc.) In a bucket and the contestants have to pick out a move from it and do their best to replicate it while shooting on vince 🤷♂️
Can I play with Jesse and 2v2 Luca and corwin loset has to stand in front of scotia bank with a habs jersey and can’t talk for an hour
Maybe the goalie has to play like Hasek?
Hockey challenges with other ‘stick sport’ equipment - field hockey stick, lacrosse stick, golf clubs, croquet mallets, cricket bats, and the one they use in Hurling as examples!
*Attempting the Svechnikov with a target in the top corner
*Goalie challenges (fastest lap with equipment, score a goalie goal from the other end of the ice, shoutout - especially if you can get a guest to do the shots!)
*Make them spin ten times around their stick and then they have to shoot the puck in the net OR they have to answer a trivia question from a hat while they're dizzy
*Yakupov/ Theo Fleury challenge: they need to sprint to their blue line and fall to their knees. The skater who slide the longest distance wins

I love this because bardown just wants to have fun doing stupid hockey stuff but need an exuse to expense the ice time
You guys should try doing a shootout with 80s hockey sticks vs a goalie with modern equipment

You find a nice Titan like Gretz used or my personal last favorite wooden/ glass stick a Koho model for Yager. If I could find one of those that's what I would still choose. Good old Sherwoods with their different flexes could work too but gotta be picky about "who's" curve/ model you choose.
It's not that night and day a difference. You step back another decade then we're talking steel bladed skates, straight wooden sticks (I started youth hockey around 1976/77 and my first Northland stick (lasted me multiple seasons until it was simply too short) was a straight bladed stick. Thankful for that because I realized I liked cutting my stick at my chin rather than my nose barefooted. Made it easier for my little ass to stay low and from being clobbered, because yeah there weren't AS MANY giants in the game back then, but it only took one lining you up from 20'away in the corner. ;)

As a senior goalie, I feel more comfortable wearing the gear from my day. Maybe it's a state of mind, but I think I am more flexible in pads from my era (1970's). Seeing some of the awesome saves made, I can't do that with the stiff butterfly pads. With my older pads, to an extent, I can get more creative. Love the video... looks like it was a lot of fun to be out there on that day.
o7 man, i remembered going from my pair of Heatons to some TPS Xlites(early 2000ish pads if i remember right). my knees were so happy, but i do have a pair of coopers from that era, fun, painful and by the end of 60 minutes felt like they weighed twice as much from all the ice build up(didn't wax them). but the props made it all worth it. haha. hope youre still getting some ice man! i just started playing again after nearly 6 years.
I have a pair of Daoust 301s from the mid 80s. They originally had the clear holders but both had to be replaced, and I cracked one if the replacements and it's still like that. Unfortunately I don't skate hard enough for it to be a factor now. ;) had bought a pair of CCM Super Tacks for my senior year I believe but they were always a bit too small and I just preferred my broken down 301s where I can better flex my ankles etc.
Oddly enough I was just public skating this weekend and there were another identical pair on the ice. :) Love um, if anyone knows where I could get clear, white or even black blade holders for um I'd be interested. Though doubt black would be an option as that was rare by the time I got those

One-time goalkeeper here (poor skater, older brother who was a forward). For my first three years (age 9-11, 1976-78) we didn't have the money to buy me much equipment, so I used the loaner stuff from the rink. It was murder to play in the third or fourth game! I swear there was four pounds of sweat mingled in with the ten pounds of leather and horsehair!!

Those pads were when goalies had to move and make saves, unlike today where these 6’7 guys with massive padding everywhere, are all positional and take up space.
For the Ove goal, he was helped because the puck was moving with his own motion. Still a goal of the year - totally amazing.
I recall Tony Esposito doing the butterfly in the 70's and Vladislav Tretiak as well though the pads weren't made for the style.

I started playing with gear like that in 1993. I watched Jim Park's the Puck Stops Here and learned my skate saves LOL. I still react that way some times.
