French Cleat Holders - Drill, Driver, Charging Station with Kreg K5 // Woodworking Shop Organization

- Hello and welcome to WoodShaped. My name is Adam Noe. Watch me expand my French Cleat wall by adding additional holders/racks. I'll be building a drill/driver station with charging as well as a holder for my Kreg Jig K5.
I started with the K5. I usually like to measure out the tool shape and dimensions and then start cutting the wood. I've not actually built plans for any of these holders but hopefully this video is enough to assist you in building your own if you decide to build these. I measured the K5 and then made my cuts on the pure bond birch plywood. This holder was a pretty simple process, the more complex part was the cleat. For the K5 most will build a platform to attach the K5 and it actually comes with screw holes to do just that. I simply attached to the plywood and then drilled holes for dowels. The dowels were glued to the cleat and that was the hanging mechanism. Off camera I decided to drill another hole to hang the K5 vertically and that's what you see in the thumbnail.
Next was on to the drill, driver, jigsaw, charging station. I opted to design this with the tools hanging upside down. One of the main reasons was due to extra space for batteries in the back and the other was to avoid any stress on the forward/reverse switch. I also included a cubbie for sanding pads. The top can just be a general shelf. This holder was a cool process.
I routed dado slots for the shelves and this was purely for a more sound structural outcome. I opted for a mini sized version since I currently only own what fits on the holder so I'll build another one if I end up expanding my drill collection. I glued up the frame and used the pin nailer to get the general box shape of the holder, routed the dados and then cut the shelves to length as well as the other pieces for the drills. I used the fast cap drill bit to drill holes for the drill shelf for extra holding power as well as for the the cleat and the drove in #8 1 1/4" Highpoint screws. It's important to use this method for securing the cleat because you don't want the screws to protrude causing the cleat not to lay flat.

For the charger, I simply put screws on the side and used the built in holes to hang it. Fits very stable. I ran the cable to the back and through 2 cleats and to the outlet.
I hope you enjoyed this video. Please check out my other French Cleat videos. Thanks for watching!!

Are you an organization addict like me?
Nope. But I have to force myself to get better at it. I can never find anything. I take more time trying to find things than working on the project.
😂 I feel ya! I still lose things despite having the Cleat wall!
@@WorkingTimbersCo I'm going to build one. But first I need to build a lumber cart so that I will be able to get to the wall. Haha
Everything has a home. That way your job is building, not looking.
Robert For sure! So worth it! More build time!
Thank you so much for sharing such a wonderful workshop, I love the way you place your camera while doing your cutting, hardly anybody does that, since you don’t know what or where exactly are they cutting and that left you wonder most of the time, I also love your background music, as far as your tools you use, they are top notch. Very professional clean videos. CONGRATULATIONS! I gave you 5 stars
Really appreciate the kind words! Thanks for watching!
The camera position, on every single view was excellent, great job!
Thanks!
Nice job! 👍 I love the versatility of the French Cleats.
🙏 Thanks. Appreciate it! Totally agree!
Thanks man ! I am building my shop right now, and I will def use some of these tips
Awesome! That’s exciting! Would love to see it when it’s done! Thanks for watching!
I just installed French cleats and I am indeed addicted to making holders for it. I like your reasoning for the inverted hanging of the drills, I haven't built a holder yet but I will have to keep that in mind when I get around to the drills.
Nice! Yes, nothing more satisfying than custom holders. Thank you and thanks for watching!
I'm getting a new workshop in January, I'm really looking forward to building everything in it so I am able to use it. Cleat wall is on the list, after a work bench. really like the ideas on here that you've given. Thank you.
Lyn! How exciting! I’m happy I’m able to contribute to ideas! Thanks for watching. Would love to see your progress! I’m in IG @woodshaped
@@WorkingTimbersCo Happy to share when I get things moving, also have to join IG lol
Nice! Looking forward to it!
Love the idea of clamping down the T square. A perfect 90 with no movement. I'm certainly going to use that idea. Cheers!
Appreciate it! I really like that method! Took a bit of time to get it set for accurate distances but well worth it, I just used the edge of the bit and it worked out great! Thanks for watching!

Very nice build. You do exceptional work, nice detail. I love the design, only thing I am doing differently is all router stuff is on its own cleat and all saw stuff f is on its own cleat an so on. Over all thumbs up. 👍
Thanks so much for the kind words! I agree, I will probably do similar in the future
"There's your French cleat fix" is absolutely right! I cannot get enough of that good stuff.

I DO like this. Thanks for the post. Looking good. I need to quit watching videos and actually build something!
Good motivation here.

Very Nice. Love the WALL
Michael Breaux Thank you!
Really leally nice. I have a two car garage that is a mess. But now i will steal (and i will not feel bad about it 😉) some of your ideas and bring order to the garage.
Thank you! No worries 😉 Do it! The French cleat system is probably the best solution for any garage. IMO
Nice work man!
Thank you! Appreciate you watching!
Is there a reason to put plywood over your drywall on the wall before adding the cleats? Or could you just as easily drill the cleats into your studs over drywall?
A few reasons I decided on the plywood backing 1) looks, I really like the aesthetics that the birch pure bond gives to the shop 2) The ability to migrate the wall. I’ve actually already taken advantage of this. If you look at my other French Cleat videos I easily migrated my panels to my new shop cutting down on so much install time 3) Ease of installation - applying cleat strips without fighting gravity, measuring on the wall is very tedious not to mention a lot fewer holes in my drywall.
Their fries, toast, kisses, and cleats... I'm sure there is more. Nice work dude. I like the organization.
Slow and Expensive You are so right about that and I don’t get how I was missing out for so long! Appreciate the kind words. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for explaining why you mounted the drills upside down. I have been wondering why I have seen that so much on RUclips, but no one has ever said why they did it that way.
I just thought it would be better to mount them up side up, for quick draw use. But yeah, I kinda like my drills and don't want to break my buttons. Thanks again.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Appreciate your viewership! There are different schools of thought about the orientation of the drills. If you space it just right (wide kerf) you can make it work without hitting the button but it will hang lower. You can make either method work, I just stuck with what i had created. I like being able to fit battery packs as well. You can have all your features if you design it into the project. Thanks for watching!
You are the best
Well, that's kind of you but I have much to learn. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching!

Really cool shop man
Thanks man and thanks for watching!
Terrific video. Making a French Cleat in my shop (garage) and your holders gave me good inspiration.
🙏 Thank you, glad I could help! Thanks for watching!
What kind of counter sink tool are you using to pre-drill the screw holes? Everything I can find is for a tapered screw head.
That would be the Flush Mount Drill Bit, link is in my description.
Just subscribed to ur channel hope to give me inspiration. Question...how far apart are your wall cleats spaced? I just can’t find a good spacing until I saw yours. Thanks!
Appreciate the sub! The cleats are 6 inches apart. The 6 inch measurement is from the bottom tip of the first cleat to the bottom tip of the next cleat and I started my measurement from the top of the plywood panel. If you don't use a plywood panel, you could just measuring down starting where you want the first cleat to start on your wall. I like to keep the cleats spaced at this distance because the next cleat acts as support for the holders. Hope this helps!
You nailed it.
Thank you!
Very nicely done! What was the blue thing mounted at the beginning? I don’t know everything yet
Thanks so much! That’s the Kreg K5 - Makes pocket holes. Check out my cleat caddy video, I’m using it in the beginning. Shows well what it can do!
@@WorkingTimbersCo thank you for the reply. you really do great work. I wish I saw you videos before I started my fc wall. I will adapt. Just have a clunky HF portable table saw...ok at my age to learn with
@@joenoffsinger6376 Thanks for the kinds words! We all start somewhere, my table saw is basically junk but i've made it work until I purchase a SawStop, hopefully this year.
Thanks
Sure np. Thanks for watching!
I made a tape dispenser for my french cleat wall. It holds six different rolls of tape (painters tape, duct tape, etc.). Anyway, as a cutoff I just epoxied a couple of hacksaw blades to the lip on the face of the holder. Was thinking you could do something like that for your paper holder as a tear off.
Awesome idea! I had been debating what I should do for tearing it off!
Bro you had me at Milwaukee...... I'm digging the content too! I'm subscribed.
Buddy, best comment ever! Really appreciate it! Yeah, big Milwaukee fan! Thanks for watching and subbing!

I have 9ft ceilings in my shop and already have a french cleat 8 ft up thar covers the seam. On that I've build shelves.
Im looking forward to getting rid of the pegboard this weekend. Thanks.

What are you thoughts on attaching a cleated wall system to a garage wall that is concrete?
As long as you get the right concrete fasteners you can definitely do it. Were you thinking of a panel or just the cleat strips across the concrete? Thanks for watching!
@@WorkingTimbersCo Probably just strips since these walls are actually the foundation in the garage area (lot slopes front to rear)
John Wills Yeah, research and make sure it couldn’t cause any foundation problems like cracks over time. Down side to strips is you may end up using more screws/bolts which means more holes, whereas a panel may cut that down some
Awesome
Thank you! 🙏
That shot from behind the router was awesome! Very creative. Thanks for the inspiration on getting more organized too. New sub and looking forward to more content.
Thank you for the kind words! Yes, that was a fun shot of the router and covered up my lens but so worth it!! Thanks for the sub! Have a lot in store for 2019!
@@WorkingTimbersCo Looking forward to it! I don't have a workshop...only a tool shed. Trying to maximize every inch to its capacity is my 2019 goal! My workshop has to be mobile so that I can drag it out from the shed onto the back patio area and be able to pack it back in at the end of the day...kind of sucks but still so thankful I even have a home and shed to begin with.
I hear ya! I love hearing about humble shops. I started out with just a miter saw. I’ve seen amazing things created in small shops. Do you have the ability roll from shed to patio?
@@WorkingTimbersCo Not easily but yes. I built a short ramp from the shed to the patio. It's a bit of a steep grade but it was the best I could do without having to move a lot of earth to bring the grade down for the shed. Instead I graded off the highest part of that yard section. Honestly...I should have just put in the couple of weekends worth of digging and moving earth to match the grade of the patio concrete. Hindsight 20/20...
I am able to get my Ridgid R4512 down and up the little ramp with relative ease. I have my miter saw on the ridgid mobile stand so that's easy to roll anywhere. Those are the two most bulky tools I own. My next build will be a mobile outfeed/assembly table. So it will be like playing tetris every time I want to do a project. Move tools in and out and around with whatever space I can find! LOL
Great projects. Thanks for sharing. Subscribed

Looking to add some tool to my shop. How do you like the Woodpeckers products? Worth the cost?
Going through comments I haven’t responded to! I personally love them but there are plenty of other good options.
That’s looking great, Adam. But a question came to mind. How do these French cleat systems compare to other systems such as cabinets, when it comes to storage density? I know they are beautiful and really contribute to the ambiemce of a shop, but now that you are using it, would you say they are the most practical storage system?
Thanks for the question. A lot of it is personal preference. With the cabinets folks often do not like to have to dig into a drawer. If you are really organized about your cabinets then it may be fine for you and there are plenty of tutorials out there on how to build cabinets of all kinds. Personally, I'm not that organized when it comes to cabinets and I tend to throw everything in there which makes stuff hard to find later on. I've noticed folks starting to make sections inside the cabinet to define where each tool goes so maybe I'll do that for my tool cabinet that I have. On the flip side, The French Cleat wall is maximizing your wall space and is more versatile than peg board or even some of the newer solutions like wall control and looks better in my opinion. I think it also depends too on the space and all the functions it has. My space is dedicated to a shop. Someone else's may not be. In my shop it's a balance of cleat and cabinet but definitely more cleat. I have a Milwaukee cabinet but the drawers are cluttered. Check out my latest video of the caddy, that's where I'm trying to bridge the gap between Bench, Cabinet and French Cleat, brings it all together.
If you want the best of both worlds, just hook up some wall cabinets onto a French cleat system.
Right on! Good idea!
Muito bom, ótimo
Parabéns

Very nice setup! Question: Is there an advantage to having a plywood backing to the French cleats on the wall? I was considering attaching the cleats directly to the drywall in my garage, but was wondering if I would be missing out on something by doing it this way. Thanks in advance.
🙏 Thank you - A few reasons I decided on the plywood backing 1) looks, I really like the aesthetics that the birch pure bond gives to the shop 2) The ability to migrate the wall. Hope this helps, either way I’m sure your wall will look awesome and you’ll enjoy the functionality. 🔥👌👍
Good idea hanging them upside down. I'm always kinda worried about messing up the reverse and forward button on my drills.
Appreciate it! Agree! Some folks have told me they don’t like my design too. A side note is the width can be adjusted to where it can still hold right side up and not interfere with the buttons but I opted against because of the extra room too 👍
How do u get straight lines doing the dado w the router?
By clamping the square down 👍 measure distance from edge to blade. Thanks for watching
Why have you got a Kreg 5 and yet don’t use pocket holes to build the carcasse
Honestly, I didn't want pocket holes showing on the inside or the outside of the holder. Thanks for watching
Can you help me I’m thinking of doing the same system in like uk what is the distance between each clip on your wall My wall is made of bricks bricks concrete bricks do I have to put buttons up to put the boards on can you please let me know
Wall cleats are 6 inches from the bottom tip of one cleat to the bottom tip of the next cleat. You’ll need to be able to secure the cleats to the brick somehow but you might consider just attaching a sheet of ply to the brick and then attach the cleats to that. Need special screws for driving into brick. Make sure you verify that you’ll be ok even drilling into the brick, you don’t want to compromise your structure.
Looks nice.. BUT, im one of those that like my drills in the grab n go position right side up..
Thanks! I can respect that! Appreciate you watching!
Looks pretty but you offered no details, such as the size of the cleats, spacing between cleats and why, looks like 3/4 inch ply, what size screws not the studs for the cleats, things like that.
Thanks for the comment. This is a continuation of my first cleat video. I specify more details in that one. Send me a list of questions and I’ll answer them all. You can DM me on IG @woodshaped

Ha ha! I should put that on the list!!
LOL. I love how we overbuild things. That drill/charging station could survive a nuclear attack, I do believe 😁
Going through comments I haven’t responded to…agree! Lol I will check that off the list 😉
What the wall covered with I have 2x4 now and like something to cover them and not Sheetrock
3/4 inch birch pure bond plywood is what I used - Thanks for watching!
@@WorkingTimbersCo that would cost to much for me what would you use but cheaper
david feldman Any 3/4 plywood is fine, just may not look as clean. You could get cheaper panels and then just get nicer plywood for the actual cleats. Would be a 2 tone and look nice.
If you want that same look I would just cover the wall with drywall then go over that with 1/4" ply. Then put the cleats on. Just be sure you actually attach through the ply and use the studs for the real support. the 2x4s
Yikes! No safety guards on the table saw at all.
Yeah so I’ve been told. Wanna donate a new table saw? 😆 Thanks for watching
What is the plywood width?
All done with 3/4” plywood that I had on hand.
Tutto ok
