  • French cleat walls are a staple in every RUclipsr’s shop so here’s mine! This project was made out of 1 sheet of ¾ plywood and some scrap pieces of leftover plywood I had laying around the shop from other projects. This is the perfect project to use up some of the wood we woodworkers love to hold on to. This is THE project you have been saving all those little scraps for.
    Measurements:
Plywood strips cut down to 3 ¼ inches thick with 90° angle on both sides.
Set the fence of the table saw to 1 ¼ inches and move the blade to 45° angle.
Run the 3 ¼ inch strips through the table saw and this will give you two perfectly cut French cleats that are 2 inches thick on the long side.
2 inch French cleats are the sweet spot! Provides more than enough strength (when screwed into studs) to hang heavy tools but is sleek enough to look bulky and blocky on the wall. Perfect combination of strength and style.
    Tools needed:
    Table saw
    Miter saw
    Drill
    Countersink drill bit
    Screws
    Level
    18 gauge nail gun
This project is so simple it can be done with just a table saw and a drill. Obviously more tools make the job easier and faster but it can be done with just those 2 tools.
    Tips and tricks:
Clamp a scrap piece of plywood to the fence of your table saw when cutting the 45 angles to keep the boards from “walking up” on you.
    More uses for French cleats:
    Floating shelves
    Hanging cabinets
    Floating vanities

Looks great with the green background. I really like the idea of the cleat system simply because I don't have to commit to tool location! LOL

The dark green with plywood is my new favorite look! Im very indecisive when it comes to tool location and it’s always evolving.

Mine are 2 inches thick and that is the “sweet spot” in my opinion. They look good but more importantly they can hold ALOT of weight!

Would you have a recommendation on what plywood to use for the cleats? Thickness, grade, type, etc. Ive built several 'walls' onto work benches using very nice expensive plywood. But that'll get really expensive for the full wall inwant to. Especially since im putting it onto a concrete brick wall. That ill first need use fir strips and full.sheets of plywood before the cleats go on.

I personally used 3/4 inch cabinet grade plywood. Plenty of strength and it looks good. Don’t buy plywood from Home Depot or Lowe’s, reach out to a local hardwood dealer and the plywood will be cheaper. The bigger the dealer the better. My local dealer has 4x8 3/4 inch plywood for $55 a sheet. If you don’t have any local hardwood dealer, try a local cabinet shop. Sometimes they order in bulk and will give you a deal.
