It was not uncommon for Meat to pass out offstage. As soon as he was offstage he was connected to oxygen and almost force-fed fluids. A few minutes later he would be back on stage for the next song. The man was a passionate performer who left everything he had on that stage. How he managed to outlive Elvis by over 40 years is beyond my comprehension?

@@eviekelpie1 Another item about the story line that everyone misses. This is in his memory. One of the first lines in the song is "I remember it like it was yesterday" and at the end of the song he is singing it "it was long ago and far away". the "praying for the end of time" is after years of marriage. Steinman would do this in many of his songs, you have to listen very closely to catch all the little jewels in it. It is like in "I would do anything for Love, but i won't do that". You would think the won't do that would be when the girl sings "you'll be screwing around" but it is not. The "won't do that" is the last line each time before he goes into the chorus. (just learned this in the dan rather interview)

Also, he was in Rocky Horror Picture Show both on Broadway and in the movie. He also performed the Broadway musical “Hair”. He’s been in countless shows and movies, Fight Club being one of them.
And yes, he performed this song every concert, and had the exact energy not only in this song, but the entire 2 1/2 hour show. Never took a break between songs for applause - he moved nonstop beginning to end.

Sorry, I love that song, but I can't listen to that bad version. It's way too fast, the intro is terrible and it doesn't show Meat's extraordinary skills at all. There are a lot of very good versions out there on YT. You probably picked the worst of all. 😐 But - as always - thumbs up for you. 👍

Wow. I've seen the created commercial version that most people have seen. And it was fantastically well done. But, I've never seen this live version from the opening tour promoting the album release. --- This doesn't look like some big concert venue. From the lighting, this looks like it's being done in a nite club type setting. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me. ---- Man I would love to be able to say I saw this live with a couple hundred other folks in a local club before it became the iconic monster album it turned out to be.
I believe it was filmed in Cleveland, Ohio I would guess the Cleveland Agora, or maybe public hall in Cleveland either seems about the right size for this ... I know Cleveland records put the album out 1st and got air play here in Cleveland 1st. I know Todd Rungrund (spelling sorry) produced it

Fun fact . Where I worked in Manhattan on the upper west side for ABC television we use to see meatloaf in Central Park just off of 66th street pitching for a softball team . He was too fat to actually play he only pitched but he pitched for both teams . They would chant throughout the game “ come on meat , put it in there meat , you can do it meat “ . This was late 1970,s .

Interesting to see this early version of the song, before they got bigger and took the album on the concert tour. I was at their show with about 2500 other young people and it was an amazing show! Marvin was a consummate showman and great performer! Thanks, Harri!

Everything about this is not great. The tempo is too fast. His vocals are harsh. The sound mixing is off. And he looks wasted.

The "live version" that the majority of people have seen isn't Actually live it's taped it's 100% lip sync to the original female singing (Ellen Foley) who didn't wanna go on tour and meat loaf was dating when they did the recording but all parties agreed Karla had a better stage presence and she did the video and went on tour

The lady in this video is Karla DeVito (no relation to Danny).
The male back up singer is Rory Dodd who is a great vocalist in his own right.
That's my first time seeing that live performance and I thought it was amazing. Ok, so the singing wasn't as fantastic as the recording, but how could it be when they were putting so much into the show. It was a whole experience and I thought they were incredible.
Funny thing is the woman Karla Devito is lip syncing, the actual.singer is Ellen.Foley, an actress too, she was on the show Night Court.

I love rock and some of every genre of music. Had a musician brother who introduced us to everything. But we never got this. He and his sidekick always seem like actors playing rockstars with their corny over theatrics. I just can't see it. 😦 But RIP. I hope he changed his mind about wanting to be damned in time.

Meat Loaf said in an interview once that part of this song is based on a date he had with the daughter of the mayor of Dallas, I'm assuming in the 1960s when he was young and ... well, you know what I mean! The music is so good here! The drummer is Max Weinberg and the keyboardist is Roy Bittan, both regulars with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band for eons now. The guitarist is Todd Rundgren. This song is 45 years old! The female vocalist is Ellen Foley and she is 70 years old now!
Believe it or not, Meat Loaf was offered an understudy education by an opera company at one time back in the 1970s (I think) paying him around $60,000 per year. _Believe you me, that was a princely sum in the 1960s and 70s!_ Then he would be added more or less permanently to the opera's roster. He declined the offer. He had that rare classification of voice, a heldentenor, and they were eager to get him into the company. You really need to see and listen to the official 1977 video, it blows this performance out of the water.
The female is Carla Devito, the voice on the album version is a different woman named Ellen Foley. We tend to think the start is prom (where lots of women lose their virginity) and the end of the song is 20 - 30 years later. Both Meat and Carla were married to others, Carla's husband was a popular actor at the time, Robby Benson. One thing he did was the voice of Beast in Disney's, "Beauty and the Best". Meat's wife is a woman what he loved totally. This version isn't the greatest version, in the original video you get more of his power vocals. Meat has acted in several movies. The two I can recall off the top of my head are "Rocky Horror Picture Show," and "Roadie." He was also in a stage production of "Hair'.
Edit: His long-term collaborator, Jim Steinman who co-wrote most of Meat's songs, including this one and all of the "Bat Out of Hell" album, passed a couple of months ago as well. RIP to one of the greatest song writing teams ever.

i hate to say it but this is the wrong video. the one that you're looking for is labeled official video. this was alright but not even close to the other one. the other one is definitely the best video ever. it was paradise by the dashboard light because they were fooling around in the car.

This performance doesn't come anywhere near the studio release. For several reasons. Just makes me really sad that this is your first impression of this amazing tune. I'm all for live performances, and this one is cool for certain reasons, but certainly misses the main marks by 180degrees. Sadface.

Have to agree with the majority of commenters here - this was a lackluster performance. I don't normally mind songs getting sped up in concert but this was too much. Worse, though, is Meat Loaf's vocal performance - very rough all over and he didn't even come close on most of the high notes. I mean, HE may have been high...but the notes weren't.The interlude was so cringe-worthy....ugh. Karla was in fine voice and the musicians did great even given the tempo but got screwed over by whoever was doing the mixing.
Disappointing treatment of a song that's ordinarily just a helluva lot of fun.

I'm not sure what you've been watching but most RUclips reaction channels have been using the "official" video...which is the studio track synced to what looks to me like a completely different performance. Somewhere on RUclips, there's a video of the official video's concert footage complete with audio. THAT was a pretty rendition! Unfortunately, I can't find the link at the moment.
The only song ever sped up for a show that was good was Hocus Pocus by Focus . They nailed it

Harri, I meant to add this to my previous post but ran out of room. ---- Most intelligent people understand that a live performance is almost never going to sound like the studio version or the "official video", for all the reasons that most intelligent people are aware of. .... Especially, if it's a band. A few solo artists can come close. Elvis could. Adele can. And a few others. I think it's just amazing that Meatloaf took this on tour at all. With few exceptions every song on this album would have been a nightmare to perform live on stage, and most artists wouldn't have had the guts to try, and I wouldn't have blamed them. Thanks for showing me something I hadn't seen before, Harri. Wish I could have been there to see it.
