    10 weeks at 30 minutes a day = 35 hours on a charge is more than I have had with any previous Kindle. I can't read one 400-page book on my Oasis 2 on a single charge. Thus far, my Paperwhite 11 is lasting well on a charge. Your 1800 pages on a charge is excellent!

      They do seem to fix issues, albeit slowly. There were two that I had on previous kindles that lasted for ages: it miscalculating reading speed and it failing to display info at the bottom of the screen. Both seem to be fixed in the most recent updates

    This video was really well put together. I enjoyed seeing an actual battery drain segment. Your comparison between the Oasis and new PW was informative and makes me think the PW is the better bargain no matter which version you have.
    It was a small segment but what really got me excited is you showing how a left handed person like me can hold the Kindle left handed only and swipe still with my thumb!! I’ve been holding my PW4 for 6 months in my right hand because I didn’t know you could swipe in the middle of the page. That was my only gripe. I’m glad to say the swipe works just as well on the PW4 I have.

    Yeah, I’m doubting the battery life claims. Mine was fully charged at 10p last night, been on it for 3 or 4 hours and it’s down to 67% now. And it’s brand new. I’m wondering if I really want to spend the money on the wireless charging station. I’m glad I got it, though. It’s nice to hear about a book I want to read and be able to get it immediately.

  • @pete6904
    @pete6904 2 года назад +3

    Amazon base the battery life (oddly enough on) a half hour reading per day - "A single charge lasts up to 10 weeks, based on half an hour of reading a day with wireless off and the light setting at 13. Battery life will vary based on light settings and wireless usage. Audible audiobook streaming over Bluetooth will reduce battery life."
    One other thing I like about the new Kindle software is having the ability for the library to be group by series and ordered by series order - they way I don't have to scroll endlessly to find the next Lee Child book (or have to look up which is the next in the series).
    When you go into the Home screen and you see "Home" (and icon) and "Library", tapping on the icon in the middle will open your current book. Since I've had my signature edition (on launch day), I've not seen the error you had. I've also not had to charge it since day one, but then again I don't read anywhere near as much as you do!
    And I do make use of the wireless charging because I can't be bothered faffing with cables when I can use the same charging pad as I use for my phone.

  • @pete6904

    Just a short update from me after using the Kindle Signature Edition everyday since I got it on Nov 11 last year. After fully charging it on the first day and leaving WiFi and auto-brightness on, It took until Dec 28 to show 8% battery left (and started getting nagged by the Kindle to charge it). This was after using it for 30-45 minutes every day. So a conservative estimate from Amazon for 10 weeks seems pretty realistic to me (when using the device for 30 mins a day and using some power-saving settings). Mine has never crashed once and survived a dunk into a hot bath. The only criticism I have is the slow and clunky Store and the way it often crashes with an error if you try and buy a whole series at once, but this seems to be Amazon's problem and nothing to do with the Kindle itself.

    • @CriminOllyBlog

    I agree that the battery lasts less than what Amazon mentions on the descriptions. I have a Kindle basic which is advertised as having a battery that lasts 4 weeks but in reality, and with my reading pace, it lasts a bit over 1 week on airplane mode and with no brightness.
    Of course Amazon tests their devices over a certain amount of time and with some specific settings but to be honest I read a lot too. There is no way I read only 30 minutes a day.

    I got the 2021 8gb version to switch from using my ipad and really like it. I only turn on the light when in the dark are very dim environment and with moderate-high amount of reading (my brother and I both have been using it for a total of between 2&8hrs a day) it has roughly 2 weeks battery. I think it would be about 4-5 weeks if you read closer to an hour a day and if you only picked it up a few times a week then it might actually last 10 weeks but not sure why such a low quantity reader would want one.

    Great review! I loved your raw opinions of the kindle. I am gonna buy my first kindle and I think I might be leaning towards the newer paperwhite rather than the oasis. The pricing is more or less the same where I live between the two products. The faster depleting battery life would give me anxiety if I opt for oasis but I really like the looks of it, only if they had an updated oasis with same or better battery life as the paperwhite. I can only charge so many gadgets in my life. Have you switched fully to the paperwhite or do you still use your oasis? And do you miss the buttons to turn the page?

    If you don't like to swipe your thumb while reading one handed with your left hand, the tap zones account for it as well. The left third of the screen is "back" while the right two thirds is forward.
    So as far as you were reaching, you could just tap and get the same result. With the swipe motion, you don't need to reach as far if that feels strange.

    I still have the original Paperwhite from 2012, still just as good as new, It has an almost worn out leatherette cover that has protected it well/ I have now bought a new 2021 Kindle which is only millimetres larger. THe bigger screen is an improvement and the warm light is easier on the eye.The original has 2Gb, the new one has 8Gb, I can;t see the need for 32Gb. To me there is little point in the illustration of the book covers instead of the list in the original and can see no sense in wireless charging, The USB-C is a big improvement over the original micro USB

    Kindle battery life numbers are inflated, to put it mildly. If you barely use it, turn most of the features off (little details like the backlight), and squint really hard, it might get near what Amazon is advertising. In reality, they suck power and you might get 30 hours out of them. Now, I'm basing my numbers on reading off and on about 8 hours a day, backlight at about 50%, and the wifi off. This is typical of my Kindle Voyage, which is still soldiering on, but getting pretty tired. I've got a new Paperwhite on order, so we'll see how that goes, but I expect it'll be six of one, half a dozen of another.

    I understand why we never get amazing processors in a kindle. But a slightly better processor could fix speed issues when accessing menus. I always wanted a larger screen. I do mot read as much as you but I am waiting for the deals before buying one.

    • @CriminOllyBlog
      @CriminOllyBlog  2 года назад

      I know what you mean about the processor. Reading is fine, but doing anything else can feel a bit sluggish. I would love to see a Kindle with a folding screen to give a bigger reading area without making the device itself huge.

    Lol. Yeah. I’m terms of the 10 days of battery life. All ebook readers I’ve found advertise days of life based on very limited reading time rather than actual hours. Very misleading if you don’t read the fine print.
    So be careful to look for what math they used to cobble together the days of advertised battery life before purchasing any brand of e reader.

    I really wish Amazon would pay more attention to these problems. My Paperwhite goes wonky like this regularly. I’ve had the current one for about four years now, and your newer version doesn’t seem any faster or have any good new features.

    Instead of calling this a review maybe it should be called, 'my learning curve'. You rambled too much, went off on mini tangents, laboured points, missed out great features. Oh, and you blamed the kindle for the error message, which was actually you totally messing up.

    10 weeks the exact Value. Because that 180 pages in a week is absolutely realistic. 180 pages in a week is not a small amount, it is a lot in fact.
