      Ah yes, you mentioned all the similiarites, but I didn't hear any compelling reasons to move from Pathfinder 2e which is already far superior to D&D 5e, to DC20 which is just an exercise in cramming pf2e rules into d&d 5e and calling it a "new" game!!!

      @@natanoj16 How many of those ideas that you like where already in games your already playing though??? Sure in theory it makes perfect sense that you could just steal the best parts of pf2e, smoosh it in with the bones of d&d 5e plus a whole heap of features from other games, but the result isn't going to be a great game. Whats the common saying in pf2e, the math is tight. There is a reason actions have varying costs in pf2e, we all know this, but no thought has been put into that with DC20.

      @@schemage2210honestly, the more I loon at DC20 the harder I find it to draw mechanical parallels between it and 5e (beyond basic stuff like rolling advantage, making skill checks, and such). It wants the vibes of 5e and keeps a lot of names, but pretty much all of them are executed differently. The game also encourages you to spend actions modifying your moves, not just actions on more basic moves.

    8:08 I disagree with you here! I feel like limited/fluent language model opens up SO many avenues for roleplay! A character could have a history of being around a particular type of people but being separated only understands a little of a language - just helpful enough to navigate through the giant village. A character could be fiendborn without realising, and find out they can partly understand the words of an abyssal being possessing a priest or the words carved across a sword.
    The fluency levels open up an extra avenue of roleplay when the party enters and explores a hold. NPCs may be surprised at the fluency of a character's Elvish and treat them more favourably. They may be upset that a Dwarf isn't fluent in their own language and treat them unfavourably. I love roleplay, and I think that's a great option to have for the sake of roleplaying.

    • @mythicodm
      @mythicodm  3 месяца назад

      Absolutely. Let it be role-play. Not a gated mechanic. In the LARP I ran for over a decade, we used to have "Read/Write" as a purchased skill. Without it, you were illiterate. It was a skill sink (and could be very costly depending on your species) and extremely annoying to RP. We killed it when we re-worked the ruleset. Now, it is a player's choice to be illiterate. And yes, we have players that love to RP that, and players that love to RP teaching someone to read/write. But it is now a choice, not a mechanic.
      Nothing says that just because you know elvish, or dwarvish that you can CHOOSE to be inarticulate. It should be a player/GM choice. "I know how all the swear words in dwarvish. And how to order an ale. But that's about it." is legitimate.
      On a rules note, a GM and player would have to figure out what the PC knows of a language and what they don't. Then track it somehow. If I know the word krankenhaus in German, then I would always know it. But how do you track it? To me, it just is an unnecessary mechanic.

    • @alexabel8010
      @alexabel8010 3 месяца назад +1

      @@mythicodm Hmm... I think I'm seeing your point! Well... I believe there's a difference between "limited" extra language and being illiterate in common. I suppose it's one of those things we'll have to see in-game.
      If it becomes unfun for the players, then it's simply worth throwing out. But I believe it will add great tension/relief when a player can kind of/fully navigate a society. I predict the sense of adventure will carry into the social encounters.
      As for keeping track: I don't believe it has to be so granular. A simple language check as stated in the rules would be good enough. I see no need to get deep enough to track particular words in a sentence. _"The Orc tells you something... Roll a D20"_ *Fail* _"The Orc says: I would love for you to bring my wife flowers!"_ There's so much fun to be had!

    Personally what I would like to be ported from 2e is the fact that you choose your subclass at level 1. After playing 5e for a while now I find it much better the way it was handled in 2e edition.
    1. Choosing at level 1 your specialty made more sense thematically. A paladin doesn't become a inquisitor by fighting monsters but by having a harsh training in a specific way for years.
    2. Mechanically it also offered more interesting aspect. You could trade some of your innate abilities for some other ones. A inquisitor cannot cast spell but he can cancel them. He didn't train casting spells because it cost time and he put his effort in something else. If you start level 3, you cannot remove a ability for another one, it would make zero sense since you have it before leveling up. Thematically and mechanically I feel this is a stronger approach. It also is more easy for a new DM that could just accept the base class are they are complete right away, subclass can always be optional.

    • @mythicodm
      @mythicodm  3 месяца назад

      I do agree on the subclass. At least in dc20, it’s consistent at 3rd. I believe the new edition of D&D still has them spread out with features gained sporadically.
      I would like to see DC20 bring over retraining as a downtime activity.

    • @Exozik
      @Exozik 3 месяца назад

      I also had a idea this morning for a optional rule. The most powerful monsters could have a Keyword like 'Epic'. What this optional rule would do is if you fall to 0 hit point you when attacked by these monsters you are not unconscious but dead. Imagine fighting a dragon that a single one of his claw is the size of your character or they could fit 10 humans easily in their mouth. Dying to them would not mean you fall on the ground, it means your are devoured, cut to pieces or be transform into a pile of ash. This would significantly increase the risk for adventurers to fight the strongest monsters that exist and some thematic reasoning to their strength and the danger to confront them. I don't think this rule would come into often but maybe if your group become super powerful and you want to add spices to the risk taking at that level, that would be a interesting to do it.

    @alicepbg2042 3 месяца назад +2

    Personaly, disagree with the language take.
    If a system tells you, you know a language, then that's it. Unless you specifically want to roleplay it, you are just fluent.
    But if the system gives you a level of fluency, now it inherently tips you into how to roleplay.
    Which is better for newer players. Imo.
    Also, it opens new game possibilities because it's in system, getting half the message is a thing that can happen now.
    So they gotta figure out the rest of the message now, maybe with some help from an npc.
    In my experience it's basically always the full message or none of it.

    • @mythicodm
      @mythicodm  3 месяца назад

      To me, if you need a mechanic to force RP, then that is a bad mechanic. Nothing says, in any system, that you as a GM cannot tell players that exact thing. "Just because you "know" a language does not make you fluent and you may end up with situations where you need to decipher some of the words, meanings etc." That should be a RP choice of the GM and players. Not a mechanic that forces it.
