- How to Handstand Learn the Tuck
Ive been training and coaching handstands for the last 7 years. In this video I show the drills and techniques I use for the learning the Tuck Handstand, both against the wall and freestanding.

Haha doggo wants some attention 4:16 😂🐶 good stuff, I was just playing around with tucks the other day, I will try these drills!
Great! Let me know how you go
Awesome as usual Paul. Yea the tuck definitely exposes tightness. It looks simple...
Gantz:0 sure does! 🙃
I really like the drills against the wall as I'm working on getting into the tuck up position. Thanks!!
Great! Let me know how you go
4:10 REALLY COOL that the dog isn't freaking out...any time I even attempt to get into a handstand my dog sprints towards me and distracts me haha
Yeah she’s seen a few! I’ve been doing handstands since the first day she came home
Thank you for the advice i'm quite flexible so I know what should i pay attention
Great! Let me know how you go
Nice one
Thanks, glad you found it useful
Thank you so much bro
Thank you! Although I am very flexible I (always) tend to planche my shoulders forwards 😂 that's y I cant hold the tuck for too long. Wonderful tips!
Glad you liked
Hi Paul! Do you do any videos on wrist impingement or extreme hand /wrist pain due to handbalancing please?! X
Sorry Isobel, only just seen this message but I think I replied to you on Insta :)
Hi Paul! Thanks so much for this video. It's fantastic. My question: Could you explain the action of the legs in the freestanding mini-tucks? I feel like after one repetition, my legs feel heavy and I collapse out of it. TY!
Its making sure knee bend and the hip bend are equal (angle at joint) and then that the legs are sitting direct on top of the torso. If not you will topple out to one direction. It should be easy to see if you video from the side
@@PaulTwyman OK, I'll give it another look. Thanks!
Hey paul, great video. I have a question: my tuck handstand is more like a yoga type tuck, and I cant manage to do the other one. The same thing happens when I fully open my shoulders in a straight handstand. My hips go over my shoulders and I have a bend in my upper back. How can I fix it?
Eitan Doaniss tricky to say without assessing you but a good place to fine tune the position is against the wall, either chest to wall or back wall. Change the distance of the hands away from the wall to restrict the movement of the knees/butt.
@@PaulTwyman thanks, I'll try it
Update: my problem was opening the shoulders too much(im pretty flexible in the shoulders). This also caused me to lose stability and my shoulder felt "loose". I fixed it and now I can hold a straight handstand and the second type of tuck.
Eitan Doaniss awesome!
Paul,
What would recommend learning the tuck handstand before the handstand?
Hi, Mobility is the big one. So lots of thoracic opening exercises and hip mobility (thats for the average person that is tight in those areas). Shoulder, wrist conditioning with wall walks and pike walks will also help
imean extending ur hips to touch the wall
Would you recommend learning the tuck handstand or the normal fully extended handstand first?
I’d definitely start with straight and then add tuck
when uare pullying ur knees down to ur chest how are u imposing resistance ....imean are u activating ur core if yes how?
Not intentionally, Im thinking about pulling the knees down but resisting the shoulders going forwards as much as possible
@@PaulTwyman keeping hand straight?
Let me try
@@PaulTwyman yeah it worked..thnx
are u pushing ur hips knowingly towards the wall when wall supported or its genuine when we bend our knees our hips goes towards the wall and are u holding ur breath when ur upside down or breath is normal ..... actually im not getting getting these two points from any video canu help me
yes Im thinking about pushing the hips back towards the wall (and just backwards when freestanding) Tuck positions don't come easy for me so i need to push back hard with the hips while pulling down with the heels. You should definitely be breathing in the handstand, don't hold your breath.
@@PaulTwyman thanks a lot ..... respect frm inda
No probs, let me know how you go
