This segment is a great reminder for people to reach out to the elderly because nowadays they rarely stay with their children. They have so much great advice and stories to share.
This is so true!!❤ family should always stay with family no matter what any medical needs are…take care of them cuz their time won’t last forever and then we will have our own time too and I only want to be with family not hospital staff (no offense to anyone)❤
Amen! I am writing down my stories thanks to my daughter's request. She said, "Mom, I love your stories, but you have to write down those memories because I can't remember all of them. So, I just created a folder on my computer and started writing. That's all it takes.
I’ve always thought it would great to see a “prequel” tv movie or mini series about when Zeb and Esther first meet, get married and spend the early years on Walton’s mountain. John and his brother Ben would be kids.
I actually have been thinking of that for a long time. My dream has been to have a prequel where we see Grandma and Grandpa and the Baldwin sisters and teenagers and young adults. There’s tons of material. How they all knew each other and how they grew up and got married and started the family. Their two sons John and Ben, the one who died in WW1. Then the Baldwin sisters with their believed papa, Ashley Longworth, etc…Ike Godsey went to school with John, there is SO much that could be told. I think it would make at least a great miniseries! And the Whitley House would be featured! We got so much backstory in that episode alone. Think of the parties they went to in that house and how it must have looked. And also the soirées the Baldwin home must have had! ❤
I always liked Mary Ellen’s strong willed independence, and her compassion. Those are traits she and her grandmother shared, which is probably why they butted heads a few times 😂
watching Zeb and Ester... you almost thought... they were a *real life* couple.... I still remember ...Grandma still thinking.... Zeb could *still* go see the lecture on Tahiti (Friday night- his birthday)after he had his mild heart attack... she took it hard....the tent was the best thing for Zeb!
Grandma and Grandma added a great dynamic to the show. They reminded me of my own grandparents for which I have so many wonderful memories. Thanks Judy❤️
I loved how feisty and jealousy the grandparents relationship was. Also reminiscent of my wonderful grandparents relationship also! Thank you Judy! I don't know if I'll ever be able to comment again without piggybacking off of others 😢
I have always said that Mary Ellen and Grandma were two sides of the same coin. Neither one held back when they had something to say, both were strong-willed and each of them had a tender side. They clearly loved each other. Kudos to you and Ellen for those wonderful scenes you played together. And Ellen and Will were just magic together. Thank you for this great video, Judy!
@@judynorton2598i remember Mama saying lord have mercy grandma i love you but where are the kids are concerned I’ll be doing the disciplining and mary ellens as stubborn as a Missouri mule…. 😊

They were such great actors and took those roles perfectly. The two of them were so obviously and deeply in love on such a profound level that I think it immersed the whole family in that warmth and caring. It's so sad to think they're both gone now.
Fictional or not, because of the wonderful portrayals by Will and Ellen, Zeb and Eshter are what all new married couples should try to achieve. Both of them were absolutely incredible. They were so good I'd often find myself saying, Mary Ellen, how dare you talk to grandma that way. This is testament to the entire cast; this was a real family.
I agree with your comments about them being a real family. I watched them when I was a young adult and have the pleasure of watching them again now as a senior. It is the highlight of my day as it comes on at noon on MeTV. I try not to think about it being a cast and crew because it does seem so real. Also hate to think about those that are no longer with us. My parents passed on years ago as well as a son. It is so comforting to watch heartwarming family stories like The Waltons. Thanks so much for taking the time to enlighten us on behind the scenes. What a blessing all of you have been to so many of us.
Hello Judy! What a wonderful episode! I love when Grandpa talks to John Boy of how much alike Grandma and Mary Ellen are when he reflects back when he meets a girl much like Mary Ellen wanting to open her own dress shop and how he feels sorry for Sissy because none of her dreams came true. The look on John Boy's face when he asked what happened to her and he said he married her is priceless and let's us see how alike Grandma and Mary Ellen are. What great stories! Thank you so MUCH, Judy! 🥰
My maternal grandparents were married 78 years and lived to their 100th years. One of my greatest memories growing up is when we would go visit them as kids and young teens and watch The Waltons together (along with other great 70s and 80s shows). They’ve been gone 10-11 years now. My grandma would have been 111 today. Thank you for this lovely retrospective on the Walton grandparents. They always reminded me of mine. ❤
Oh how I love watching any of the episodes that focused on Grandma and Grandpa. They could have been my own wonderful grandparents as they were so similar to them. Seeing them on screen brings my grandparents back to life if only for a moment.
The relationship between Grandma and Grandpa were so great. I don't believe any other actors could have pulled off the relationship between Grandma and grandma...Ester and Zeb played by Ellen Gorby and Will Geer. Grandma and Mary Ellen were so much alike It fit in the show. Loved this episode Ms Judy. Thank you.
This was so good!! The scene with Mary Ellen and Grandma at the hospital makes me cry every time. Also Grandma and Olivia on the porch when she just wants to be needed. The last scene between Grandma and Grandpa is so epic and emotional. Then seeing it in later years and realizing that it was their very last scene together is almost heart wrenching. Thank you for bringing these memories to us so beautifully!
I love in the hospital as Mary Ellen and Grandma are each blaming themselves, Grandma says it was because she was so proud of what Mary Ellen had done becoming a nurse.
Grandma pleading with Olivia to "need me" is the one scene that floods my eyes with tears, the same as her eyes in the scene. I have seen Ellen Corby in so many movies and TV appearances and this scene proves why she is one of my favorite character actresses of all time. She and Thelma Ritter both could give such memorable performances by showing up to play the part, always so natural. Mary Ellen was the child most like Grandma without a doubt! A couple of spitfires with hearts of gold. Will Geer? I can say his performances made us all love the mountain.
Oh thank you, how lovely to look back at these wonderful characters! One of my favorites was when Zeb and Esther were stuck away from home and he brought them to the fancy hotel lobby to ride out the weather ❤
Pegedey, I love that moment too. That action by Grandpa seemed like an essential part of their relationship. Zeb insisting there be a celebration involved (amid the hardship) which helped Esther (throughout their lives) not have to live so completely in her standard mode: The practical delivery of duty, of service. Esther helped Zeb in other ways. They were & are a great couple!
Esther was everything a grandmother should be. So very wise. When I was a kid, I thought she was a meanie. I didn't realize the things she did that seemed unfair was all out of love.
The Quilting was another of my favorites. I loved how Grandma was so intent on getting the beautiful quilt for MaryEllen. You put these back stories together so well. So much detail Thank you
Loved Grandma and Grandpa together. They were so cute, so different. Love when they were reminiscing together on the mountain in The Heritage. So touching and poignant. And when they danced together in The Separation, and The House, so sweet what a great pair they were!! Grandma knew what was best for Grandpa in The Birthday, and she knew he needed the outdoors, nature, and fresh air to recover. Grandma and Mary Ellen were both so strong willed and stubborn. They were alike in those ways. Both knew what they wanted. Love the characters and stories, so real and compelling. Also loved Grandpa’s wedding anniversary clogging dance, lol. He was really good!!!
I always loved Mary Ellen's spunk, sense of adventure, independence, & actions. She was so clealy defined as a character & acted like a typical teenager. She had the eyeroll down pat! 😂😂. Will Geer was the perfect Grandpa. Ellen Corby's Grandma was the Queen of Feisty. 😂😂. Thanks for sharing!
So many fond memories of watching the Walton's not only with my kids but, the interaction with the Walton family members which were mostly realistic. Blessings to you and your family.
Such a a great couple and great grandparents no one can replace Ellen Corby or will geer love them as Esther and zebb you old fool and good Lord love those lines their wonderful judy
A beautiful segment. Ellen's enduring role on The Waltons made for a nice finish to a long career beginning as a teen (as many of the Walton children) herself - at 17, in 1928. Thank you for sharing, Judy
I am just beginning to start to view this "Behind the Scenes" but HAD to share with you how excited I was at reading this was today's topic. Thanks for reminding us of those wonderful scenes and relationships with grandma. My favorite one was when grandma advised Cindy when she married Ben, very moving!
I loved the relationship between Grandma and Grandpa!!! Often brought me to tears. I believe that scene on the porch with the broom was one of the last before Will passed; if I remember correctly. So sad.
Ellen Corby and Will Gear were fantastic actors. The chemistry between them was always nice to watch. I always had a smile on my face when Esther kept calling Zebulon "You old fool!"
@@personal8322 yes, it was sad that when Grandma finally returned from the hospital , Grandpa (Will Geer) actually passed away before the next season. But I'm glad they had the chance to be reunited on the show, and I'm so glad they didn't try to replace Will Geer. There couldn't have been another Grandpa.
The last scene they had together before he died makes me cry every time I see it. They remind me of my grandma & grandpa. My grandpa was in Vietnam. Had metals for things that gave him nightmares. When I was young I asked him what he did in the Army and he said he tended the mules:)
@@judynorton2598 as a kid I did. I thought that was the coolest job ever working with mules:). Getting older and finding out the truth(like with grandpa tall tales about Rough Riders) I see why he avoided talking about it. It was said one of his friends was blown up and he witnessed it and got body parts on himself. Spent a large chunk of the rest of his life in a beer can or vodka bottle.
Yes, the Quilting episode highlighted your dramatic acting skills, loved the large cast in that episode! I'm sure the writers missed Zeb in the final 3 seasons, his humor and presence is priceless!
Omg! I forgot about THAT! I have the box set. Next time I watch it I will definitely watch out for "Grandma." Thank you so much for reminding us about that
I sure miss them all from the Waltons everyone who has passed on ..Ellen Corby & Will Geer were a large part of the Waltons ❤ You all had a huge impact on Families all over from the 70s until now 🏠🌲 Thanks Judy ☺️
That last pit of granda and grandpa .when she smak him with the brome , i alwas liked how the camera fashes to the window and John and Olivia are in the window watching and reacts to the brome smak
I feel like I have come full circle! When The Waltons originally aired, I totally related with Mary Ellen and her relationship with her grandma. I was very close to my grandma. Now that I am a grandma, I totally relate with Grandma and Grandpa. I am very close to my granddaughters. Thank you for this touching episode, Judy! ❤
Every scene you take about is wonderful, but I agree the one with Zeb and Esther reminiscing on the mountain is perfectly played and written. The scenes with Mary Ellen and Grandma are touching too. I also love in the hospital when Mary Ellen is in the chapel and so distraught that even in his own fears of Esther's health, Grandpa comforts Mary Ellen. I also think that having Zeb and Esther so integral to the show cemented that family bond and added so much depth to the overall relationship of the Waltons as a family unit.
It was wonderful to see how much the children loved Grandpa and Grandma. Just as wonderful was how the children respected their grandparents. The magic of The Waltons series was that viewers were completely invested in these characters. We truly cared about this family. This is credited to brilliant writing and acting.
To have a life like yours working with some of the greatest actors in the television industry is something I’d die for. If only you had an autograph book with everyone’s signature that you worked with,(like Carol Burnett had), it would be absolutely priceless.
Everytime I see the scene where she's whacks him with that broom brings tears to my eyes. After watching them together for so many episodes you feel the love when Grandpa shouts yeehoo Esther you're back.
Mary Ellen and Grandma were So stubborn at times. but the really Loved each other. I wish Families were like this now but sadly most aren't. Grandpa and Grandma had some very touching scenes together. Another Great Video. I'm Loving it. Plz keep them coming. waiting for the next one. God Bless and take care Judy.
I have watched every episode of this wonderful wholesome series I almost know exactly what each line and response from each character will be' sometimes I catch myself talking right along with them as if I'm in the scene, LOL!!! If every household in America were watching this show maybe we wouldn;t be in some of the fixes this country is in now. I loved your character especilly Judy.
Will Gear was my "surrogate" grandfather. I was a lonely, verbally & emotionally abused young girl, from an alcoholic, destroyed, home. With no grandfather around, I'd dream he was MY granfather.😊 Infact, I have told my children over the years that the whole Walton family were my "surrogate" family. 😂
Suemarie, I am and clearly others, too, are moved by & impressed with your endurance, creativity and strength! Speaking openly of your experience you’ve also helped (are helping) others see a light in their future and you’ve further reduced isolation people and potentially all animals feel from abuse. I’m glad you’re sharing your spirit !
I feel as you both do. Whenever I’ve viewed that scene, I see them there as a young couple discussing their lives when they were new to marriage. They seem to transform into the young people they were and always carried inside. Beautiful writing, directing, acting and solid, heartfelt relationship ~between Ellen & Will, too, we’ve been fortunate to learn.
I think I cherished Grandma and Grandpa Walton as much as my own grandparents. When they choose Will and Ellen to play those two characters they hit the jackpot. I mean how many TV characters are there whom America called Grandma and Grandpa?
Yes, I really enjoyed this about your character with Grandma and Grandma and Grandpa’s relationship! I loved this show so much! ❤ Zeb and Esther had the best relationship that just worked! I loved the scene where he gives her that broom and what he says! I remember watching that episode, the night it debuted. It’s definitely one of the best episodes! 🥰
Absolutely beautiful show, loved all the characters in The Waltons,Always thought underneath her strong will Mary Ellen had a heart of gold, also loved Zeb and Esther's relationship. And those characters that would come in to the Walton's lives for that particular story, my favourite was Lee Purcell in The Wing Walker. Best wishes to you Judy from England.
I found out something about my one of my aunts I never knew before until this morning. When she was little in the 1970s, she was afraid of teachers. My grandfather told me an incident where one time she stayed home and her teacher came over to their house.
Love grandma and grandpa My grandma was tough and saved everything. I lost my grandpa before I was born. I like to think he was like grandpa Walton thanks for the video Judy
very rarely do you get that chemistry between two actors you can tell ellen and will worked well together right from the start of the series and had great admiration and respect for each other on and off screen bless them both
I believe they really did have a mutual respect and affection. Will was the one who insisted they go check on Ellen when she was late for work the day she had her stroke. He KNEW she'd never be late without a good reason. He likely saved her life by going to her house where they found her and took her to the hospital.
In addition to the episodes you mention, another favorite Grandma moment was in "The Valedictorian". During the graduation ceremony, we see John's car pull up. You can't yet see who is in it. John gets out and walks over to the passenger side door. I had expected Olivia to get out -- but no, it was Grandma! She had an ear to ear smile that was beaming with pride, as she looked up at Jim-Bob. That moment was worth the price of admission, right there.
@@judynorton2598 another what I thought was funny episode was when she told Reverend Fick that she would leave the Baptist Church and turn Methodist if they didn’t let her play the Oregon
I absolutely loved the relationship between Grandpa and Grandma. Also related to Mary Ellen as being headstrong but always very close to the grandparents. My mom for a couple of years deserved,an award.
I absolutely loved the relationship between Grandpa and Grandma. I do remember that my own grandparents, my Grandma, used by calling my grandfather, you old fool, and he calling her an old woman. They do remind me a lot of Ellen and Will. As for Mary Ellen is very headstrong but always very close to the grandparents. Thank you, Judy ❤😊
I love that you were a part of this as an actress yet you lived it!! And how you describe it as and you lived it as a family!! And that is how i experienced the show as a family living those experiences! And that is why The Waltons endures!! I love the episodes where Grand Pa is alway itching to get a taste of The Recipe with The Baldwin Sisters!! And when he gets home Grand Ma is not happy to say the least!! And when Grand Pa got the Rev whom John Ritter played drunk!! Will Geer as Grand Pa his joy and spirit was so strong!! And his wisdom !! I Love Will Geers laugh and enthusiasm!!😊
They so remind me of my Grandparents..especially when we all lived in the same house in Waterbury Connecticut from when I was born in 1951 thru 1956..moved to our own new home in 1956, my mother would talk to us kids about living through the Great Depression and FDR..I guess I was just too young to understand some of what she was talking about in those days, didn’t pay much attention..and now she died at 97 years old, here I am at 73..and wish I could ask her more about those days as she and my Dad and Grandparents who came over in the early 1900’s from Italy lived through it all. Your show, The Waltons is bringing me back to those days when I wish I had paid more attention..my wife and I watched the Homecoming when it was first aired in 1971..just so captivating…still remains true to this day..February 6, 2023..thank you Judy for your wonderful insight and sharing your memories…God Bless…
Another favorite exchange between Mary Ellen and Grandma was in "The Day of Infamy." After Mary Ellen learns of Curts death and Grandma retrieves the letter left by Curt, there is a non-verbal scene where Esther seems to be telling Mary Ellen she knows how it feels to receive a similar telegram and that to be strong. I always felt the two characters were very similar only separated by their generations.
This segment is a great reminder for people to reach out to the elderly because nowadays they rarely stay with their children. They have so much great advice and stories to share.

Esther reminded me very much like my grandmother, my Baba...
How sweet.
I loved the relationship between Grandma and Grandpa!!! Often brought me to tears. I believe that scene on the porch with the broom was one of the last before Will passed; if I remember correctly. So sad.
What a perfect scene to be their last together. So touching.
Hi Judy THE Waltons love my favorite one fan BIG 💖 💖💖
Happy to hear that. Thank you.
Really enjoy the indepth and enlightening history of the Waltons. Ty..This one is very touching.
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it.
Ellen Corby and Will Gear were fantastic actors. The chemistry between them was always nice to watch. I always had a smile on my face when Esther kept calling Zebulon "You old fool!"
I loved the two of them together.
Loved this! Thank you Judy.❤
So glad. Thank you.
I loved the relationship between Mary Ellen and Grandma. The relationship between Grandma and Grandpa was one of the best ever portrayed.
So glad you felt that way.
I found it interesting that the last thing Gramma ever says to Grampa on screen was "You old fool." lol
Immortal words :)
Wow - do you think he meant it?
@@judynorton2598 as a kid I did. I thought that was the coolest job ever working with mules:). Getting older and finding out the truth(like with grandpa tall tales about Rough Riders) I see why he avoided talking about it. It was said one of his friends was blown up and he witnessed it and got body parts on himself. Spent a large chunk of the rest of his life in a beer can or vodka bottle.
Thank you for these videos. As always they are awesome !!!!
Glad you like them!
Yes, the Quilting episode highlighted your dramatic acting skills, loved the large cast in that episode! I'm sure the writers missed Zeb in the final 3 seasons, his humor and presence is priceless!
Yes - we all really felt the loss of our castmates.
Ellen was on I love Lucy episode with Orson Wells. HE DID MAGIC ACT LUCY LOL
Omg! I forgot about THAT! I have the box set. Next time I watch it I will definitely watch out for "Grandma." Thank you so much for reminding us about that
I sure miss them all from the Waltons everyone who has passed on ..Ellen Corby & Will Geer were a large part of the Waltons ❤ You all had a huge impact on Families all over from the 70s until now 🏠🌲
Thanks Judy ☺️
They were missed by us all.
Hello miss Judy god bless and have a wonderful day I just appreciate your videos thank you
Thank you so much.
That last pit of granda and grandpa .when she smak him with the brome , i alwas liked how the camera fashes to the window and John and Olivia are in the window watching and reacts to the brome smak
Such a sweet scene all around.
Just a wonderful segment! Thanks, Judy! 😊
My pleasure.
Especially lovely episode today, Judy. Thank you.
Thank you.
That is so sweet. I love that.
Hello Judy hope you are having a great day..
Thank you. Same to you.
Thank you for sharing your lovely thoughts.
Thanks for this Judy, I always loved how the actress portrayed it so we could see all sides of it. Great job
Glad you enjoyed it.
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. We can learn so much from Grandma and Grandpa,in fact I did.❤
So happy to hear that.
It was wonderful to see how much the children loved Grandpa and Grandma. Just as wonderful was how the children respected their grandparents. The magic of The Waltons series was that viewers were completely invested in these characters. We truly cared about this family. This is credited to brilliant writing and acting.
That is so wonderful to hear. Thank you.
Judy..thank you so much for this beautiful episode of your much loved channel. The characters of the Waltons were so rich.
Thank you for watching. Glad you enjoyed it.
To have a life like yours working with some of the greatest actors in the television industry is something I’d die for. If only you had an autograph book with everyone’s signature that you worked with,(like Carol Burnett had), it would be absolutely priceless.
That would indeed be priceless.
The statue when Grandma yelled out Moselle Lewis made me crack up
Great episode Judy 👏 what good memories ❤
So glad you enjoyed it.
Everytime I see the scene where she's whacks him with that broom brings tears to my eyes. After watching them together for so many episodes you feel the love when Grandpa shouts yeehoo Esther you're back.
Such a perfect moment.
Thank you for your kind comments.
@@judynorton2598 yvw!!! Judy!!!
Happy Birthday, Judy!
Thank you!
Loved Grandma and Grampa
🥰
I have watched every episode of this wonderful wholesome series I almost know exactly what each line and response from each character will be' sometimes I catch myself talking right along with them as if I'm in the scene, LOL!!! If every household in America were watching this show maybe we wouldn;t be in some of the fixes this country is in now. I loved your character especilly Judy.
Thank you for continuing to watch. I'm so glad you appreciate the wonderful stories.
Blessings to you🙌
I'm so glad he could serve that role for you.
Thanks for sharing this with us ❤
My pleasure.
Lets today think a little more of others and the little less of me amen.
You love the same scene I do!! When Esther tells Zeb about how scared she was being pregnant, and he talks of wanting to take care of her.... my heart
Such a touching scene that really showed the beginnings of a lasting love.
Thanks Judy! Another great episode!
Thank you.
That was a very sweet synopsis. Thank you, Judy!!❤
Glad you liked it!
I think I cherished Grandma and Grandpa Walton as much as my own grandparents. When they choose Will and Ellen to play those two characters they hit the jackpot. I mean how many TV characters are there whom America called Grandma and Grandpa?
They really were perfectly cast.
So glad you enjoyed it.
Awesome! Thanks. Lee will be happy to hear that.
Judy, thank you for speaking about the character interactions regarding Ms. Corby and Mr. Geer! 🤩
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
@@judynorton2598 You're so very welcome. 🪻
I found out something about my one of my aunts I never knew before until this morning. When she was little in the 1970s, she was afraid of teachers. My grandfather told me an incident where one time she stayed home and her teacher came over to their house.
How interesting.
Love grandma and grandpa
My grandma was tough and saved everything. I lost my grandpa before I was born. I like to think he was like grandpa Walton thanks for the video Judy
So glad you enjoyed it.
very rarely do you get that chemistry between two actors you can tell ellen and will worked well together right from the start of the series and had great admiration and respect for each other on and off screen bless them both
I believe they really did have a mutual respect and affection. Will was the one who insisted they go check on Ellen when she was late for work the day she had her stroke. He KNEW she'd never be late without a good reason. He likely saved her life by going to her house where they found her and took her to the hospital.
I watch the Waltons everyday through the week. It has been a treasured show for our family since I was young. Love It !!! ❤️
That is awesome!
Such a wonderful surprise of everyone including the viewers.
Loved Grandma and Grandpa.
🥰
I loved the grandparents. I loved my grandparents. So many years ago.
@judynortan The Whitley Window love that episode
So glad.
@@judynorton2598 who couldn’t love grandma and grandpa or John and Olivia the statue always comes to mine. Grandma did not like that statue.
@@judynorton2598 another what I thought was funny episode was when she told Reverend Fick that she would leave the Baptist Church and turn Methodist if they didn’t let her play the Oregon
Today at my job, I engaged a conversation with a senior today for the 1st time, and she went to high school with my dad wow what a small world!!!!
Very cool.
I absolutely loved the relationship between Grandpa and Grandma. Also related to Mary Ellen as being headstrong but always very close to the grandparents. My mom for a couple of years deserved,an award.
I absolutely loved the relationship between
Grandpa and Grandma.
So happy to hear that.
So happy to hear how you felt about the show.
Have a great
Weekend
Judy ❤❤😊😊😊😊🎉♥️❣️✌🏼
Thank you.
Very special episodes I loved them all thanks 😊 Judy
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for watching and for sharing a bit of your story as well.
I grew up with all the Waltons. I remember all of these great episodes.
So happy to hear that. Thank you.
Ah yes... that was a special moment between the two of them.
Wow Judy, great segment on Grqndma and Granda, and of course Mary Ellen. Words escape me. I’m getting all misty eyed!
Awww…. thank you so much.
What A Beautiful Commentary.
Thank you.
