    Working on Christmas Eve is a nightmare, especially at a grocery store. Folks are just stressed, that is why they are rude.

    Jeanie is 100% correct about working retail. Couldn't have said it better. People are so rude to retail workers. And most retail workers can't request that time off, specifically it's usually MANDATORY that you work during the holidays as she said. Think about that next time you shop during Thanksgiving, Black Friday, or every day for that matter!

    Tamera's approach is good. A lot of companies work their employees like dogs on the holidays and customers can be so rude. When you're doing something repetitively you almost forget the good that is in front of you. When I went to the DMV last year for the first time to get my ID everyone was complaining about the workers. When I went to my counter the lady at first was tense with me but as soon as I said good morning and thank you she helped me speed up my process and I was in the building no longer than 20-30 minutes. My ID was in the mailbox in 3 days. So it pays to be nice.

    I agree with Tamera. I'm one of those people who are more patient and have high tolerance. Many times customers before me in like Macys or JC Penney would be rude or irritated with the cashier, and I would always see some of them kinda shut down. When I go to the register, a simple "Hi, how are you?" would enlighten them, and they would spark a mini conversation with me or share a few laughs. Then a "have a nice day" when they're finish ringing up everything and I could tell I put them in a more jovial mood. Happy Holidays people !!!

      I'm more patient because I worked in years in retail so I always try to be friendly and ask them how their day was. Never forget that one bitch of a customer I had who tried to blaze me. I strive to not be one of those people; ;;_;;; But Tamar also has a point about respecting the people who come to your counter: its likely they had a stream of shitty customers or one really bad one before you came along, but they (the associate) shouldn't take it out on the next one.

      Nice customers can change our day. I'm a cashier at a clothing store and most of the time I put on a face just to not deal with the rude ones. Then one will come along and be really nice to me and it'll lighten my mood. And our conversation is genuine

I also always hand the $ to the person bc I feel it's rude to just throw on the counter like your hand cnt touch theirs but thn when gettin ya change u get mad if it's done to u....I'm sorry bt only one race always did tht to me. Some ppl just dnt have manners.

    Tamera's right though, when I worked in retail, if a customer clearly makes an effort to not treat me like just a worker but also another human, I am SO much more likely to give them perks haha. It's like, if someone is being stingy you really don't try and give them any money off or anything. But when someone is being all considerate and understanding, then those are the people you try and do stuff for.

      Yup! I dont work in retail, but deal with people over the phone. Answering the phone generally gives me anxiety, not knowing what to expect. Be an ass to me right from the get go, and I am going to do the bare minimum for you. Be a considerate person, show manners, say please and thank you to me, and I will probably go above & beyond for you. Be an ass hole, lie, be disrespectful, no, I am not going to do extra for you. Do people really think that is how to get their way or get better service? I have never understood it ,because that kind of behavior just turns me off!

    Ive been working in retail off and on for about 4 years since i was High school and Now that i am in college I'm still working in retail and as much as i love tamar! she CLEARLY has never had to deal with the receiving end of customers....Its honestly sad that as soon as your put on your uniform or name tag all respect and human value goes out the door! People think that they can speak to you any kind of way! Throw things at you call you names and yell at you because they don't get your their way! Retail is an extremely demanding job during the holidays! I hope this year for me will be much easier but its not even thanksgiving and its bad already lol

  • @mikemapu

    Tamar clearly hasn't worked retail or doesn't remember it if she did. Jeannie & Tamera said it best. I remember being cursed out and being called the nastiest names. They say Black Friday is the worst, but it's actually Christmas Eve. Those people who put off the holiday shopping until the very last minute being upset when the hottest toy is sold out weeks in advance? NIGHTMARE. Luckily, I had a fantastic manager who had my back bc lord the entitlement! It really should be a requirement to work retail/service at some point in your life bc I really think it would humble a lot of people who think it's cute to bully minimum wage employees at the most stressful time of year.
    Oh! And Jeannie's 100% right. Nobody got Black Friday or Christmas Eve off. If you didn't show up, don't bother coming back.

  • @Shorty2896ify

    I work retail, and I just want to say thank you for understanding! I don't care how many hours of sleep I get I would never treat a customer badly or have an attitude. But, yes if we want to keep our jobs we are not allowed to call off, request that day off or anything. We have to be there no matter what and its hard because each and every one of us go on less than 5 hours of sleep that day. That goes for Black Friday, Christmas Eve and New Years eve and day.

  • @lstarsabb
    @lstarsabb 9 лет назад +2

    For me Tamar doesn't get because she's never had to work in customer service, it really is " you have to walk in their shoes" to get it. Because it really is a different world working in customer service. I treated people is different from the way I did before I wasn't bad before I almost away said hi, but now I make an effort to always say hi them and if I make their job harder apologizes and so how thankful I am when I they say it to me because the one the pisses me off is when you make effort to say hi to someone and they automatically say I have coupons or the price for this is...and then when you have to go out of your way to do something for a customers and they take their bag and receipt and don't say thank you and walk away. It comes down to respect some people have the mind set that they are better then people in customer service because they assume that they didn't or are not or won't go to college when most likely they are making just as much or more than you (if they have more then one job). Jeanie and Loni and probably Adrienne understand because they experienced it and Tamara proves that they are still some good people in the world who aren't ignorant to the fact that people in customer service are people too. I feel most Americans have to work in customer service for at least 6 months to understand it.

It feels good for someone to actually ask how your day is going or acknowledge you in some way, or just smile. Good service and interaction does goes a long way!

    I work at this store called Five Below and it's hella popular where I live. It gets mad busy during the holidays. I am usually chipper and friendly towards customers when I ring them up. I mean I guess it's natural for me to he that way especially during the holidays. Plus...I value my job not to be rude to my customers. Getting a complaint from a customer is like...the worst because I know I try to give someone a good experience in the store and sometimes someone likes to embellish just to try to get someone fired or in trouble. So I agree that some that are rude but there are a few of us who knows not to bring your issues to work. Like Miss Tamar says...I gotta make my coin!

A customer should never see/feel you "having a bad day". Once we start our shift, you are not just representing yourself, but the company that you work for. Have pride in what you do and most importantly be genuine. I don't think anyone goes into work with the mentality "I think I'm going to have a horrible day today!"

    I worked thanksgiving holiday last year and it was a rough time because I missed going home to my family and I was dealing with a break up but I faked like I was so happy to be at work and the customers would be like wow you're really happy, which helped me keep it up. But yeah customers can sure be ruthless lol retail will make you hate the holidays for sure

    Hmmm... I work in customer service and it helps a lot when the customer is also nice to the person working behind the counter! We greet with a "hello how are you", the customer should answer back with a nice remark. Some customers are really bossy and rude and its rally hard to be nice back.
    Sorry.

    I hate working the holidays! lol. I've worked retail for like 3 years, and it's the worse. people are rude, and not understanding. they don't get that we're out of something so they'll ask for a certain size and I'll say "We're out" and they go to another sales associate asking again. they can't make it happen! and Christmas Eve and New Years Eve are horrible, because instead of closing at like 9:30 as normal, you close earlier at 8 and the store is a mess. so you wanna leave to celebrate the holiday, and so you have to come in earlier on the day after the holiday to make it presentable at like 7am. and during the holidays, It's different hours which is worse. so the mall won't close until like midnight, and most employees are college students so they have to get home, do homework, and go to school in the morning and might even be having midterms or finals. you only get out of working if you're going home for the holidays from college but you most likely will have to work a store by you lol

    I've worked in retail a long time and I always try my best to be super polite and super friendly. Its not only my job it's just a better way to be. However, in my job, I have been verbally, sexually and physically abused by customers who don't realise that yes, I'm a person too!
    One time a man grabbed my arm and pulled me around so hard I had bruised from his fingers for two weeks. Another time I was getting stock from the bottom shelf to put on a higher one and a man kicked me in the ribs to get my attention.
    Most customers don't understand just how bad it can be for us, so if we're not 100% friendly and helpful they take that on to them. Sorry, it's not you who ruined my day, its the man who asked how much my ass was on sale for 5 minutes ago.

    I'm never rude to employees, at least I try not to be. But I tend to not be that bothered when people have to work holidays. I have to work holidays at my job too. It is what it is.

    I don’t celebrate any holiday or birthdays, so I volunteer to cover their shifts on their birthdays and on holidays. I don’t mind. For me it’s just another day but I know for many those days are precious. I don’t mind covering for them Christmas Eve , New Year’s Eve and other special occasions. Our company gives us off on holidays , I have volunteered to work on holiday but they won’t let me -_-

  • @EstefanyGonzalezXO
    @EstefanyGonzalezXO 9 лет назад +1

    My thought is, then why work in retail if you don't have the patience to deal with people. Going into retail you know damn well you are going to be working during the holidays and you know what you're getting yourself into, either you quit before the holiday season or you have good customer service and act like you love your job. No one told you to work there!

    • @carlyb4827
      @carlyb4827 9 лет назад +9

      You sound ignorant just like Tamar. Most people who work at the cashier/sales associate level in retail are there because they NEED a job and don't have the luxury of just quitting when they want and choosing to work any old place. Like Jeannie clarified, many times when they have to work extended hours, it's the rude customers that test their patience. Must be nice for people who have never had to work in the customer service industry to think it is so simple to have all the patience in the world, ALL the time.

    • @EstefanyGonzalezXO
      @EstefanyGonzalezXO 9 лет назад

      Sally Riposte Lmao I have worked in retail before..Aldo shoe store last holiday season and I did have to work extended hours but I KNEW what I was getting myself into, I just wanted some holiday discount so then I quit haha. It's not worth it. Additionally, I've worked in the customer service industry since I was 15 actually, so it's been a while which is why I can speak about it because I've experienced it and it's not for me. I've left that behind me an moved on to what I love doing, therefore, why continue to work in an environment I'm not thriving in or anyone else is for that matter? You have two choices not work in customer service or do because you have to and just make the most of it!

    • @carlyb4827
      @carlyb4827 9 лет назад +1

      Estefany Gonzalez It's great that you had the option to quit when you wanted, though it seems from your comment, you didn't have to be there in the first place. No shade, good for you, but you are speaking from the perspective of someone who DOES have the luxury of working somewhere, simply for a discount. Many people don't have or are in the process of getting qualification to work elsewhere and therefore have to tough it out. Just the fact that you mentioned it was not for you and you were able to leave because of that, puts you in the upper echelon of retail society. Though I agree with your point of choosing to make the most of it in the interim. I too have moved on from retail, but only after putting up with it until I became qualified to move on to a different field of choice. I'm speaking on behalf of those who rely on these jobs until they can choose better.

    • @EstefanyGonzalezXO
      @EstefanyGonzalezXO 9 лет назад

      Sally Riposte Right, as it sounds like you and I have. Relied on those jobs until we were qualified enough to move onto a different field. I had two jobs at the time both customer service/retail. Anyway, all I'm saying is make the most of it you never know who's watching as those jobs may be a possible way to network and make career/professional connections.

    if someone did what tamera said, and asked me if i was okay, i would hate that, because it would seem like im doing something wrong and am not okay, when all i want to do is get everyones service done quickly and correctly.. kind of embarrassing and disrespectful to imply that im not okay, and should be doing better for some entitled rich person. I am making minimum wage and working on christmas, so no, im not going to give you a fake smile and kiss your behind. im going to serve you because that is my job.

    I'm not gonna lie. If Tamera asked me how was my day or how I'm doing, that wpuld annoy me. I've been working at a doctors office for 5 years now and got into a habit of saying please, thank you, have a nice day to EVERYONE. I'm at the drive thru and they say your total is .... drive around. I reply, "Thank you" and I swear, their voice change, "You're welcome." I get my change from the register, "Have a nice day" and same thing, "you too." For that slight second they are in a better mood.
