In this video, we take to the skies in the FlyingIron Simulations P-38 Lightning. We'll carry out a demonstration flight, based on real world historic aircraft documentation.
We start the flight with the aircraft on the ground, on the northern shores of Papua New Guinea - just out to the east of the former Hollandia airstrip. The flight will be run following the real world "piggyback" / demonstration flight syllabus. Some historical materials and briefings will be thrown in along the way.
The real world P-38 manual can be found here: akvictoria.by/wp-content/uploa...
Please note this video and all its contents / materials, is for entertainment / simulation purposes only.

What are peoples thoughts on video quality - specifically, is the video any more (or less) fluid than previous content? I'm still getting some feedback regarding stutters etc in videos; I'm trying to troubleshoot what might be causing that and I have changed some settings around for this vid. Any feedback would be much appreciated.
    Cheers!

The only issue I notice with video quality is the absolutely overdone flickering/dimming "vintage effect" in the intro and when showing the pages from the flight manual (example at 13:40). Made those segments extremely difficult if not painful to watch so I skipped over them although it would have been nice to spend more time viewing the content. Otherwise good performance I thought.

This one is smooth and fluid, for sure. Compared to, for example, your video on the Grob, the difference is night and day. Whatever you did, it worked.

Thanks very much, DR! I figure that people are going to want to hear the sounds of the aircraft, especially during a review. I also want to make the video as immersive as I can and cranking up the engine sounds helps there as well. I got this plane primarily because of the good experience with the Spitfire and how their later updates on the Spit were simply excellent. They really gave me confidence in their products and even though P-38 isn’t my favorite warbird their quality with the Spit certainly tipped my decision to get this plane in their favor.
And after flying it I have enjoyed it a lot. Excellent climbout, easy ground handling as it isn’t a taildragger, steady and docile on a cruise, yet aggressive and fun in maneuvers. Especially with flaps in maneuver setting.
Overall another excellent product from Flying Irons in my opinion!

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 года назад +1

Completely agree Vograx. The Spit released in a decent state and I very much enjoyed it, but I initially saw it as a beautifully modelled bit of fun. With the excellent updates its received over the months though, it’s become a really solid effort. Not study level, but close enough in my opinion.
I was already pretty confident that FlyingIron were a developer worth supporting, but the P-38 has cemented that fact in my mind. They are clearly passionate about making quality products. They’re always very humble and engaged when taking on user feedback as well, which is incredibly refreshing in this hobby!
Like you, I find the P-38 a lovely option for cruising and I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds for it!

The quality is very good, well done! The frame rate is good and the voice / plane mix is perfect! The image is a bit blur in full screen (1440p) but reducing it a bit is perfect. Suggestion: I just bought the P-38 and I like it a lot. If you could indicate with your mouse which dial / switch you are looking at, that would help us to become more familiar with the procedures. Thank you again for your professionalism!

Yes, I would love to record / upload in 2K, but frankly I just don’t have the resources to do that at the moment. I agree that it looked a bit blurrier than usual; I’ve been playing around with the recording bitrate, so I’ll fiddle a little bit more and try and find a happy balance.
That’s a very valid suggestion. I used to do that a lot more in videos, but somewhere along the way I seem to have stopped. . . I will try and remember to indicate things more clearly in future vids.

Really great video and editing. The only lag/stuttering I saw was during the still shots of the original manual - that may be built into the video editing software if you use 'sepia / old' settings? Flying Irons hit another home run with this aircraft, I look forward to seeing more of the few improvement opportunities being patched as they have already done with the Spitfire.

I simply love this flight model. I picked it up a day or two ago and have not changed aircraft since purchase. It's fun to fly. Very forgiving with maneuvers and acrobatics. Simply a joy. As always nice video. I however can not get the dive flaps to work in the MSFS store purchase from Steam version of this aircraft. While on the ground doing control checks I can get the dive flaps to deploy, but once airborne and diving I could not get them to deploy down. I tried the clickable cockpit switch on the yoke as well as using the default toggle spoiler key to no avail. I have contacted flying Iron Simulations to see if this is a bug or ? I noticed you got it to work in this video however. But, I think there has been several updates since the time you listed this video. As always, thanks for the expert video review and good day to you.

      Hello Travis,
Very happy to hear you’re enjoying the P-38, indeed it is another lovely aircraft from FlyingIron! I really should take another outing in the aircraft myself, when I finally get the chance. . .
I’m afraid I’m not sure what might be causing the issue with the dive brakes. I seem to recall at the time, they were simply actuated with my spoiler / speedbrake assigned button. As you suggest, I strongly suspect a previous update may have killed them unfortunately. I do hope that FlyingIron get back to you and indeed manage to get the issue sorted in the not too distant future.

The vague ground handling at low speed is because you have to steer with the brakes. The nose gear is just a caster and is not connected to the rudder linkage in any way.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Год назад

      Hi Mark,
That's a fair point, but not really what I was trying to describe at the time. Initially, the P-38 felt like its tyres weren't really "gripping up"; to say that it felt like taxiing on ice, would be a big exaggeration, but it did feel a little bit as though the aircraft wasn't entirely connected to the ground. I suspect FlyingIron probably addressed this issue a long time ago though. . .

Indeed! There were a few others; the Americans seemed to be a bit ahead of the curve on that one generally speaking. The P-39 and the B-25 spring to mind. Of course once jets started to come in (and prop ground clearance became less of a factor) conventional landing gear started to become much less common. It certainly makes the aircraft a bit more pleasant to operate on the ground haha.

    Great video as usual.
But you missed a few things i think, like the flames and smoke at startup if you look at the engines, and smoke from the engines when overheating.... which you avoid by controlling the cooling manually. The oil cooler switch have a horizontal function to open manually.

Your number 2 engine should not have been rotating when in feather. That's the point of feathering. Strange software glitch? In reality, the prop goes into feather, engaging a prop brake at around 90 degrees, which also helps prevent autorotation of the prop.

I have read a lot on the MSFS forums about how MS has "a real spite 'again weapons" on the aircraft - how did FlyingIron get weapons on the P38?
Particularly I had read how MSFS had emasculated at least one spitfire model and there was a lot of noise about that - so I am curios about what's going on here.

      Hi Jim,
It basically comes down to whether or not an addon is purchased in-sim, or from a 3rd party. Microsoft doesn’t allow the depiction of any weapons (even training munitions), if the addon is sold through the in-sim Marketplace (there is even an A-10 with its GAU-8 removed - looks kind of tragic haha), I believe this is done to keep the sim’s ESRB rating. If an addon is purchased from outside the sim however, it’s all fair game. As a result, I would always recommend that any military aircraft, warbirds etc are purchased through a 3rd party where possible.
I hope that clarifies things. All the best : )

They did a terrible job blending the startup sounds to make it sound believable. Hell, I had a better sounding P-38 in FSX with a sound pack.

I really like the startup sounds, but you’re right, the blending could indeed be better. FlyIron did a tonne of work to their Spit after it was released though (including the sounds), so I expect the best is yet to come.

Ah well sorry to hear that. Maybe worth keeping an eye out over Christmas etc, perhaps FlyingIron will do a little sale or something : )

I don't know WHEN Microsoft / Asobo will realize that it's been over a year since EVERYBODY (including real pilots like you) say that the rudder is too sensitive when we take off ...

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 года назад +1

I know, it’s really rather disappointing that nothing has been done to address the issue yet. Apparently Asobo are aware of what’s causing the problem, they just don’t seem to be making fixing it a priority. . . I find it strange that 3rd party devs don’t seem to be able to tweak it out of their flight models though. The issue must be pretty foundational in the sim.
It’s my biggest bugbear with the GA flight model. Not to mention I sound like a broken record, having to comment on it in every review haha. Fingers crossed Asobo does something about it in the not too distant future.
      All the best!

Risky business bailing out of the P-38 with just one guy in the cockpit, imagine attempting it with two.

So it would seem Brian! (from what I read whilst researching for the video). I think in the scenario the manual describes (with the rear passenger flying the aircraft until the pilot is clear), it would be an academic exercise at best haha. I can’t see too many situations under which that would be a very practical process. Interesting little procedure though I thought.
      All the best : )

Recently, the P-38 has undergone a huge upgrade in the MSFS SU12. You may want to 'Re-Review' it, but if you do, would it be possible to avoid inserting the advertisements that force the viewer to watch all the way through?
Personally, I am adamantly against ads of any kind, but if I had to tolerate one, I prefer those that I can click "Skip" after 5 seconds of mindless, exaggerated, product promotions, making deliberately false and impossible claims.
Even when I watch TV, I only do it with my TIVO set 30 minutes behind, so I can fast-forward through the ads, otherwise, I don't watch the program at all. Anyway, the '5-second then "Skip" ads are much preferred, if it's all the same to you.
I understand you need to make money to eat and pay bills, so this request may not be one you can accept, no worries.

      Hi Rich,
I only tend to re-review an aircraft if it’s gone from zero to hero; given that the FlyingIron P-38 was excellent on release, whilst of course there have been many improvements subsequently, I don’t think it would change the outcome of the review very much (as I’m very limited on free time these days, it makes sense to move on and focus on new releases).
I take your point on the ads, nobody likes them haha, but the *vast* majority of the money I make on RUclips comes from the advertising and I already go to some effort (at cost to myself) to minimise the impact of ads on my viewers; cutting down the number of ads shown (usually by about 50%) and removing certain ad types altogether etc. It’s not that I won’t be able to afford to eat otherwise, but I do expend an awful lot of time and effort making the videos and since that means time away from the family etc, I think it’s only fair (on them as much as anything) that I have something to show for it. All of the money I earn on RUclips, either goes back into the channel, or will be saved up for a rainy day ; )
In short, I’m afraid I will have to politely decline your request, I hope you understand. Cheers and all the best : )

@@IntotheBlueSimulations I absolutely understand on both points and commend you for it! Frankly, I can't begin to imagine the time it takes to post a well thought out, quality review as the ones you have brought. In my own opinion, they are the best I've ever seen on RUclips, (and I'm not just 'saying that').
The fact that I have tolerated unimaginable pain in a variety of formats in my 67 years means that I can certainly tolerate a few minutes of commercial babble, 😉 LOL.
I've benefited from, your reviews and have donated to Blue Simulations in the past. Regardless of the commercial interruptions, I can promise you that I will certainly continue donate, (and in the near future, in fact!).

Well that’s very kind of you to say Rich and very rewarding to hear of course! I think “well rounded” probably sums up my content quite fairly haha; there are plenty of people out there who can edit better than me, give commentary better than me, know the technical details better than I do etc, but I try my best to combine all of these things just a little and of course give honest feedback. I think it gives the videos their own little niche.
Any support is much appreciated, but please don’t feel obliged. As cheesy as it is to say, if people are enjoying the videos, that’s more than enough for me! If our evil tech overloads can throw some money my way in the process, then I think we’re all fair and square haha ; )
      All the best!

I think you should be saying you are traveling at 250 Kts not 250 Mph unless you did the math 1.15 Mph = 1Kts

      Hello Brian,
Is there any specific reason that you believe that to be the case? I don't recall specifically in the case of the FlyingIron P-38 (and the resolution in the video isn't quite good enough for me to see), but many (most perhaps) Lightnings had airspeed indicators that read in MPH and indeed, the pilot's notebook that we were referencing throughout the video here, gave all speeds in MPH. I could certainly be wrong though and perhaps in the case of the FlyingIron P-38, the ASI does read in knots. . .
Cheers and all the best! : )
